35 Places to Celebrate Black Musicians and How They Changed the World

"Albany, Georgia may claim musician Ray Charles as a “native son,” and may even have a plaza and statue to showcase that claim, but Greenville, Florida was his real childhood home. The tiny town of Greenville (population less than a thousand), in north Florida is where Ray’s mother Aretha was from. She had traveled to Albany, Georgia while pregnant with Ray, and it’s true that he was born there. But life in Albany was short-lived, and after only a month they returned to Greenville. “R.C.,” as he was known by childhood friends, grew up in a small house on what is now called Ray Charles Avenue. Greenville was R.C.’s home until age 7, when he was sent to The Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine. He made frequent visits back to Greenville, until Aretha’s death when he was only 15.  The Ray Charles memorial, unveiled in 2006 and consisting of a dedication plaque and bronze statue in a small plaza, sits alongside a pond in Haffye Hays Park in the center of town. The statue was carved, free of charge, by locals Bradley Cooley and Brad Cooley Jr. Just about half a mile from the memorial is Charles’ childhood home at 443 SW Ray Charles Avenue. Saved from demolition in 2006, the small house was opened as an attraction in 2009, and visitors can call City Hall for a tour of the inside. If you’re lucky your tour guide will be Elesta Pritchett, Mayor of Greenville and R.C.’s childhood friend." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Free public park open to everyone. The park offers a playground, BBQ grill and pavilion, walking path and a cute lake in the center. Ray Charles statue is nice to look at and in great shape. A must stop for pictures and leg stretching.

You can feel the essence of RC at this special place that is very close to his childhood home. The incredibly talented sculptor did an amazing job capturing his spirit and mannerisms.

Ray Charles statue is between parking and the lake. There is a nice picnic shelter with tables and a little restaurant across the street. The lake and park are pretty.

Nice little park and statue next to a small fishing lake tributing Ray Charles. Sadly, the main dock is rotted and has been closed for years.

Very interesting collection of memorabilia documents and photos which add to the understanding of the history of Thomasville and the experience of being black in the south, as well as appreciation for the contributions of black Americans. I spent over 2 hours there and could easily have spent several more. I will probably visit there again sometime. While it says this museum is temporarily closed when you do a Google search, if you call the phone number listed, there's a good chance that you might be able to get in for what, in my case, turned out to be an excellent private tour from a very knowledgeable young man. Somehow this review got mixed up with the Thomasville Black History Museum. Both are excellent. The Ray Charles Statue in Greenville is a wonderful tribute to the Genius who blessed us with so much great music and kept an incredible, great and grateful attitude about America, despite its many shortcoming that he knew so well...

His childhood friends called him RC. He lost his sight when he was 7. His full name was Ray Charles Robinson.

This town is in some serious need of love! It's a shame to see so much dereliction, I hope they get all the support they need to make it a proper tourist draw
