The Definitive Styles of Burritos in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"For the owners Raymundo and Laticia Garcia, the chimichanga is an honored dish: their well-seasoned shredded chicken chimichanga is blanketed in a powdery mix of yellow cheese and crumbled queso fresco that gets into every bite." - Bill Esparza

I tried the grilled shrimp taco. Nicely seasoned and the tortilla was nice. High price point with tip + tax for what it is. Wish they used more environmentally friendly products.

Muchísimas Gracias a Raymundo y su colega! In the middle of a long trip to California’s coast, all the way from our home in Colorado, our group found ourselves in Raymundo’s colorful and welcoming restaurant. The food left our bellies and our hearts full. The tortas were “gas” the salsa was “hella good” and the drinks refreshed us after a morning in the sun. The food was made well, with care and love you could taste in every bite. Raymundo himself was even kind enough to take a photo with us all. In a world pushing us towards faceless fast food mega chains, local businesses like this one keep our world as vibrant as the walls in this lovely place.

Google
Fish tacos were awesome. Note that there's no restroom so be prepared if you order something messy.

Google
Quick, tasty, friendly. Great for lunch. Love that they have breakfast burritos all day. We really liked their guacamole, but all our food was solid. Prices were very reasonable. Two burritos for $25.

Google
The thing that most taco shops like this struggle with are the beans and rice (bean’s especially). They are a good litmus for how good the rest of the food is. The beans are top notch, terrific consistency and taste. The hot sauce is good. The portions are generous and the prices surprisingly low for La Jolla, and in comparison with other, similar taco shops. If you just want some good Mexican food and don’t want to pay Prospect Street prices, then check out Raymundo’s Taco Shop.

Google
California burrito was awesome. Me my wife and son all got the same thing. My son ate his in less than 5 minutes. He's 15 so. It was absolutely delicious.

Google
There are many tacos shops in La Jolla. But this is the best tacos in town. Shrimp and fish tacos were seasoned perfectly and the tortillas are AMAZING. These are what make great tacos and Raymundo knows that.

Google
Incredible fish tacos! I did my homework on which ones to try and this is the place folks! Great prices, authentic and simply to die for! You want good tacos? This is your place.

Yelp
Stopped by this taco shop in La Jolla and overall had a really good experience! The place is a little hole in the wall, but actually a decent size inside. It was pretty hot and muggy in there, so we decided to sit outside, luckily they had outdoor seating which made it super convenient. We tried the piña and horchata drinks. They were okay, nothing I'd go back for, but they did the job of washing down the food. For our meal, we got the surf & turf fries and the surf & turf nachos. Both were tasty, but the nachos definitely stood out! I'd highly recommend those to anyone stopping by. Prices were pretty decent too, especially for the portion sizes. Great flavors, casual vibe, and perfect for a quick bite in La Jolla!

Yelp
Mediocre food with cheap interior. Same quality as any other burrito places in San Diego. Maybe I expected more since it was located in La Jolla and I'm paying $15 for a burrito. Cheaps out on salsa and napkins.
google avatar

Yelp
This is some of the best mexican food in San Diego. I believe they're pretty affordable with a burrito being around $10 and a torta being about $6. They are fast and just good home like mexican food. The staff are very friendly and their drinks are good as well. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
While the crowds flock to the touristy restaurants along the Main Street, those in the know take a short walk -- only about a block in -- to find an authentic local taco shop with all the regional favorites. We were in the area and were quite impressed with all of the food our party ordered. Our table had a tostada, carne asada fries, a shrimp taco, and a breakfast burrito with bacon. Food came out fresh, hot, flavorful and satisfying. Not too greasy and not too heavy, but serving sizes were just right. It's a small shop, with one hostess taking orders and one cook in the kitchen, and we got there right when it opened so there wasn't a wait, but as we were leaving more people started walking in so not sure how quick it is when busy. Caustion: The red salsa is HOT... but the salsa verde has a great flavor, and only a mild spice (if any). Overall a great taco shop!

Yelp
Stopped by here after a visit to La Jolla Cove! We were excited to see they had such a huge menu. I got the Carne Asada plate and it was filled to the brim with food and a generous helping of meat! It was super tasty and it wasn't too long of a wait for the food, either. The spot is very no-frills, but the food is good! Parking is on the street.

Yelp
Well the food is decent the service was terrible, I was sitting on the patio and moved the umbrella over a bit to shade me and my food. Cook comes out drags the umbrella back and says the guy next door complains which is fine but when I asked him just to scoot it over slightly on their property he said no and walked away. Mind you I paid $20 for a taco and enchilada plate and you have this kind of service, definitely won't be back!
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
My son and I went there and had bacon breakfast burritos. The lady at the counter was really cool and the food came out pretty fast. It is a very relaxed casual taco place. We both loved the burritos and they had the yummy stretchy flour tortillas (that I wish I knew where to buy at a store! They are never the same.... If anyone knows where you can buy those flour tortillas that are stretchy and delicious like a lot of taco places I'd love to know!.... Overall, a nice experience and a chill taco spot in the middle of La Jolla

Yelp
Stopped in for some rolled tacos and they were beyond excellent. Very healthy serving of guacamole and definitely want to try more of the menu next time. Very clean inside and outdoor seating too. Sucks they are closed Sundays.
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
This is proof that corner shops will always have superior tacos. I ordered the fish and shrimp- both came very full of fish, topped with pico and lettuce. Tortillas were soft and didn't fall apart. This plus a short walk to the cove makes a day
google avatar

Stella P.

Yelp
I've come here twice for the adobada burrito. They PACK in the adobada which is so nicely fatty and seasoned. So. So good. The servers are sweet and the place feels quite homey. I should probably try other things on their menu, but their adobada alone makes this place 5 star worthy.
google avatar

Liliana C.

Yelp
This is not your authentic Mexican place. They have a unique menu. The burritos don't come with rice and beans like a regular burrito, you have do ask for it. Felt like they charge for every ingredient that you wanna add, bc the meal is only meat. Parking is hard too. The only thing I really enjoyed was the beans. If you're looking for an authentic Mexican food, I would skip the spot.
google avatar

Jean S.

Yelp
Great fish tacos. Fresh tasty sauce. Out of the way location but google maps found it. Pleasant outside finished
google avatar

Marwa H.

Yelp
Prompt and very friendly service! She recommended the fish battered taco and the carne asada taco. I got both tacos, and they were both very delicious. I got sides of salsa but they were delicious, moist, and flavorful without it. Inside the restaurant was bright, spacious, and clean. Would recommend to anyone in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Being in SD, we expected Mexican food to be a no brainer but this place was not it. Guac had no flavor and looked like it was from a bag and not fresh. Same with the beans. Clean inside but no bathrooms. No servers and you have to ask for all your cutlery. Chips, rice, and beans were $10. Burritos were $10 for veggie

Yelp
Raymundo's is fast, affordable, gives large portions, and is so delicious! Highly recommend any of the burritos, tacos, or bowls. Adobada and carne asada are my favorites here. Service is great too!

Grayson A.

Yelp
Tacos are amazing, being both packed with meat and incredibly delicious. Service was quick and excellent!
google avatar

Richie W.

Yelp
I truly love this place, but the prices keep creeping up. It's kind of crazy that La Jolla Taco Stand is so much cheaper, but it's true. $11 carne asada burritos before tax is just the state of things I guess. I've attached the most recent menu, because the prices keep going up. With that said, I still love this place, and still come probably once a week.
google avatar

Kristina N.

Yelp
Killing time and walking around checking out the food and shopping. Walked by this place and thought we have to give it a shot. My husband and I are self proclaimed taco shop critics so we had high standards. Overall prices, location & ambiance were exactly what we look for. We sat and chatted with the guy at the front who took the time to make the experience feel like family. We learned about his life and his dad who was a farmer and their garden as a kid. Salsa was delicious, carne was bomb and if you're feeling extra spicy go for the chili toreado. Give this place a shot!
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
Food was good. It was not out of this world but it was good. The horchata was kind of watered down. The service was quick and friendly. The restaurant itself was bit bleak. I saw a few people coming in and out and they seemed to be regulars so I think it's a popular spot. It wasn't mind blowing in the least to me but it was fine.

Yelp
Sitting here finishing eating our plate and just had to drop a 5 star review!!! I never do reviews unless it's terrible or it's amazing and Raymundo's is just amazing!! "Life is worth living again, life is good" my cousin states after finishing her plate... We're latino so we know authentic mexican food and this tastes just like home!! Extremely affordable for delicious food especially with all the overpriced restaurants in front of la jolla... this is a secret gem!! Nice patio seating and welcoming friendly staff! Great lunch!! Will come again
google avatar

Yelp
Huge menu so made it hard to choose. I got the carne asada burrito with guacamole and it was delicious. The meat was so good and I highly recommend the carne asada. The food came out fast as well and the service was very good. They have plenty of seating inside and outside but inside was kind of dark. All around would highly recom

Yelp
What is the high rating? O my because it's cheap and large portion? Ok. Sure. With tons of fam and kids we came here cuz you can't go wrong with tacos. Whoops. Yes you can. No flavor needs salt no specialness every variety of meat is bland. I guess you can't go wrong with a giant burrito filled with rice beans and other fillings so you're just getting a giant intake of foods and you're satisfied. But if you're actually looking for something that's going to take "Mexican or authentic or flavorful" nope. The various enchiladas, quesadillas, crispy or soft tacos all were oily. The shredded beef tacos - the beef was so dried out and crunchy I thought I read the menu wrong that they deep fried it or something but I think they just left it on heat all day with no sauce? The chicken was mush like a can of chicken. The green and red hot sauces that you had to go back and ask for to drown out the dryness and flavorless was was just variety of heat, no flavor. No likes to zest it up. Two varieties of fish tacos tried- one grilled shrimp - no shrimps grilled flavor, one bartered fish. That was actually the one decent winner. Except that white sauce over it all was flavorless and weird. Don't know what kind of flavored crema they were going for. Ranch? :/ I liked the cabbage on it at least. It freshened it up. Enchiladas playter was a fried oily messy sush no real flavor. Just chips and guacamole and youl be happy. Or bring your kids here they can't possibly complain or have a discerned taste bud Also - no bathrooms at all. They posted it like 5 times. But also - NO hand sanitizing station either. so. Gross. I was so busy being annoyed by everyone's disappointed meal I didn't even use the free drink check in. The only good thing about this place.

Yelp
A proper taqueria and probably one of the only spots in downtown La Jolla where you can get full for around $10. I had the California Surf and Turf burrito which had carne asada, shrimp and french fries. The burrito was big and tasty although the fries were soggy (probably cooked a while earlier) and the shrimp were lost in the mix. I would probably get a straight carne asada burrito next time. The service was friendly and the seating outside was great. Overall a great spot for an affordable meal in downtown La Jolla.
google avatar

Yelp
Idk, man. I'm frustrated. I wanted onions and cilantro inside my California burrito. $1 each. Guacamole? $1.50 extra. Pico de gallo? $1.25. Sour cream? $1.25. I ordered 2 burritos and opted to get them with how they come--meat, cheese, fries. Each burrito is $11, and I ordered two. Had I got them the way that most California burritos come, it would've cost me $17 per burrito. Which, come on now--is INSANE. They tasted fine. They needed the extras, though. All in all, I'd go somewhere else. I'm honestly surprised I didn't have to pay for salsa or napkins.

Connie Y.

Yelp
A cute little taco shop near busy Prospect but big on food and service. Needed to feed about eight people and decided on their burritos to take out. Service was great and the order didn't take long to get. Everyone was very happy with their food so I definitely will come back to try more of their menu. Highly recommend!

Yelp
What you see is what you get, a good sign is that you have a lot of workers coming in and leaving quick! Good was really good we had breakfast burritos (steak and cheese and the Californian)

Yelp
After completing an appointment in the village of La Jolla recently, I stopped by Raymundo's Taco Shop which was just a block away to pick up some food. I had learned about their presence after seeing an advertisement in a local community newspaper. The place was quite spacious for a taco joint, but unfortunately it can't be used with the restrictions on indoor dining. Lots of choices were available on the large menu board. I ordered a burrito (The Original Asada) so I could redeem a coupon for a free Bean & Cheese burrito. What impressed me was how quickly the kitchen assembled and cooked both items. It had to have been less than five minutes before a bag was handed to me. As for the burrito quality, the ingredients were on par with most places. The asada meat was juicy while the tortillas were still warm when I dug in. The coupon and the speed of service were what earned an extra star in my rating of the experience at Raymundo's.

Yelp
Great casual Mexican food in the heart of La Jolla! Super clean place inside and out. Friendly staff. The menu is loaded with so many great food items! We had breakfast burritos with salsa verde. Excellent food. Nice spacious indoor dining, and a wonderful patio area. Enjoyed this spot and we will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
We ate here a couple days ago, not the first time. Food was good, nice staff, and clean inside. Bf ordered a burrito and quesadilla, and I had the chicken enchiladas. Everything was tasty.
google avatar

Jerilyn D.

Yelp
Reliable, friendly, and efficient service. Consistent traditional breakfast burritos.
google avatar

Yelp
To be honest I was a little disappointed with this place considering its reviews. I got the shredded beef taquitos. The pros to them are the crispy outside and a pretty good price for 5 taquitos! Aside from that, the flavor was pretty lackluster. The beef was dry and did not have flavor, and the main flavor carrying was the salsa. my friends were saying it was mediocre too with the beef being dry. I wish i can like this place, but the taste was not there at all. Maybe if i'm going for a cheap place around the area i'll try another dish here, but otherwise i'll pass.
google avatar

Brian D.

Yelp
Overall I'd give Raymundos three and a half. The food was good and had good flavor. I ordered the surf and turf California burrito. The carne was a little over cooked and it was lacking sauce. I would come here in a pinch for Mexican food in La Jolla
google avatar

Roz A.

Yelp
Enchiladas were tasty & the burrito bowl was satisfying. Generous with the portions. I'd come back here again to try the rest of the menu.
google avatar

Melody S.

Yelp
Disappointed. We can to this restaurant today and wanted to eat lunch but it was unfortunately closed. Not sure when it will reopen.
google avatar

Aylleen G.

Yelp
literally my favorite place for lunch. cheap and GOOD mexican food. the girls are always super nice and great service. im so sad they arent there no more!! Does anyone know of they moved locations?
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Work in the near-ish area, parking is street, so be aware that this is downtown La Jolla is insanely busy so take that for what you will. I ordered a carnitas burrito, first impression: sorta small, but hot and ready pretty quick. Flavor: the carnitas was hot and crispy/juicy. I hate a dry carnitas burrito so I will give them points for that. The problem was that the carnitas needed more salt... I was disappointed with the taco sauce, the verde was average, but the red lacked a lot of flavor. I wonder if it was just a bland batch... I think their meat to pico ratio was reasonable for the size of their burritos. All in all it was a decent burrito, I wasn't blown away, but maybe that wasn't the dish to get from there.
google avatar

Corinne B.

Yelp
I had the surf and turf nachos, they had no flavor. The salsa was just hot, also no taste, pure heat. Customer service was good...she did forget to push my order thru so I was given a free drink because I had to wait so long. Also has flies, which is extremely annoying. I ate inside not out. Do not recommend.

Alex J.

Yelp
I left the bad review because I believe I'm doing him a favor. He did not put any guacamole in the Carne asada burrito. He told me it was too expensive to do that. The meat did not taste fresh. Also, it was way too spicy. What I would do is raise the price a little because you're in La Jolla so change your burrito from $12-$14. Put more guacamole and bring down the spice. You already have hot sauce. I would definitely add more hot sauce because the red and green is not doing It. It's very simple it taste like it's from a can, it's not homemade. Also the carrots tasted old. I guess that's why it was a dollar. Change that The price from a dollar to $2.50. The only thing that was good was the Mexican Coke over there. I'm not trying to be mean I'm trying to be honest and help you. And your customer service needs a lot of work. You cannot tell a customer that guacamole is too expensive and I can't put it in the burrito. Take care of your customers with good food and I promise you that people will not care to pay two or three dollars extra for your burrito. I paid $20 for a carne burrito and a Coke and I could have had Jose for the same price and the burrito is excellent over there. They also have a beautiful Ocean view. Good luck and I hope this helps you in the future. Sorry I don't like to leave a bad review but this was a must. Oh and they don't let you use the bathroom. It's California law, that if you're serving food, you must also have a bathroom available for your customers. Again I apologize for the negative review. Ut sometimes negative can turn In To positive In The future. You have a good place just do a little better and don't disrespect your customers. They are the ones paying for your bills. Take care my friend. God bless!m you!

Yelp
Raymundo's Taco Shop just opened and so far 5 stars! The owner was super sweet and our food was up fast. The have a large menu with lots of options. We got beef rolled tacos, and they were delicious! The red hot sauce was also amazing, probably one of my favorite red hot sauces so far. They only have indoor seating so far, but they did just open yesterday. Inside was very clean and spacious. Overall, great customer service and the food was good. A great addition to the village for some quick Mexican food!

Joseph M.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic food. I had the tacos and they were outstanding! Don't let the decor fool you - the food is amazing

Karen W.

Yelp
Everything I have had here is excellent. Great take away food-from crispy beef tacos, chicken Chimichangas (full of flavorful shredded tender chicken) soft tacos, fish burritos, beans etc. I have not worked my way through the Menu yet, because it's pretty extensive!!! I appreciate how it tastes like home style Momma food and not too salty or complicated. Yes and friendly service too.
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
Small, fast, solid taco joint in La Jolla. I stopped in for a quick lunch and was happy with the fish taco meal. The rice and beans were a cut above, and the hot sauce brought the heat.

kamryn v.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place and while it seems small, this place packs a punch. I ordered the carne asada fries thinking it would be a small snack size, it was a whole meal's worth and it was amazing!! The California breakfast burrito is MASSIVE and AMAZING!! Stuffed with fries, eggs, carne asada, bacon, cheese, and salsa, good luck trying to finish. Great sized meal for a great price. Will be back again when in town!!
google avatar

Rick H.

Yelp
I don't think there is another taco shop this close a stone throw from Prospect Street so other than Jose's and Puestos this it. Good not great. I do appreciate the very clean buttoned up space. They should have a salsa bar that might get me to a "5".
google avatar

Joi P.

Yelp
The food was great. We had the fish tacos, surf and turf nachos and chicken taquitos. The tables outside made it a safe lunch, even with the pandemic. And plenty of room for our big bulldog in her wagon.
google avatar

Denise Y.

Yelp
I've been to Raymundo's a handful of times and I've had a good experience each visit. The food is averagely priced for comparable places, the portions are good, it's prepared well, and full of flavor. I've tried the bacon breakfast burrito, carne asada chips, beef rolled tacos, and the enchilada/beef taco combo plate with rice and beans- all were great! This may be a simple detail but it's worth noting that the beans are delicious, they remind me of my grandma's beans. I'd be happy to be a repeat customer any time I'm in the area! Also they are still being careful with wearing masks while working as of this review (3/27/21). Support your local small biz!
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
The food was incredible. Although it is a small business we were greeted with a smile and our food was done right away. It was everything we expected and more. I definitely recommend this to anyone and I will be back !
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
Not bad, not great. For La Jolla I suppose the food is ok. Prices are reasonable. Tables are usually clean. Not a particularly nice environment to eat but great for a few quick tacos.
