Rays ice cream is always impressive, with a wide variety of flavors to choose from. They have all the classics like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, but they also offer unique and creative flavors like lavender honey, matcha , peppermint and salted caramel pretzel. There's something for everyone, and it's clear that they put a lot of thought and effort into their flavor creations. this was my third visit and I decided to try the banana split with 9 scoops (yes!! With family) and it was fantastic. The service is top-notch. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to offer recommendations and let you sample flavors before making a decision. They genuinely seem to enjoy what they do, and it shows in their interactions with customers. Overall, Ray’s is a must-visit for ice cream lovers. The combination of great flavors, friendly service, and a fun atmosphere makes it a top-notch ice cream shop. I highly recommend giving it a try – you won't be disappointed!

Google
Best ice cream in metro Detroit. If you don't agree, you're wrong. It's freaking amazing. Great staff, excellent prices, terrific ice cream. Support local!

Google
My first time visiting this super popular ice cream shop. Classic vibes with a lot of local Detroit /MI products so very nostalgic. There were many flavors to try (tested the matcha and Superman) ordered 1 scoop of Cookie Monster in sugar cone - 1 scoop of Superman in waffle cone. Everything tasted good but since I’m not a sweets person I don’t see myself frequenting. Also I was put off by how dirty the floors were.

Google
Ray’s Ice Cream has been a favorite of mine since my teenage years, and it still hits the spot every single time. There’s something special about a place that can hold onto its charm while continuing to serve up the same rich, creamy, delicious flavors that made you fall in love with it in the first place. Whether it’s a classic scoop of vanilla or a swirl of cookies and cream, the quality is always top-tier. The texture is smooth, the taste is indulgent. Ray’s isn’t just an ice cream shop, it’s a piece of local history and a place full of memories. And every visit feels like coming home.

Google
A Super Ice Cream Spot! 🍦 Quality at its peak! I had the Mackinac Island Fudge — 2 scoops in a waffle cone — and it was absolutely delicious. This place is a must-try for anyone in Michigan. My wife and I both loved it. Highly recommended!

Google
Just a great local store to get amazing ice cream at! I love the aesthetic of the shop and every time I go, the workers are quick and kind to get your order through. There are so many flavors that it's hard to choose but I am a big fan of the salted Carmel mocha chip!

Google
I understand why this place is so busy. Friendly service, a great product, and very fair price for the quality. I stopped by on a colder December afternoon so there was not a line but steady traffic. Shares a parking lot with the bowling alley next door. Old fashion counter seating. Throw back to an older time which seems perfect for an ice cream shop.

Google
Super cute and retro atmosphere. Huge banana split with 6 scoops for $14. Everyone was super friendly and it was packed!

Yelp
5-15-2025 Hubby and I got a kiddie cup of salted caramel ice cream with fudge topping. So yummy and great service.

Yelp
There are so many reasons to recommend this local gem. I'm an ice cream fanatic and have been to some world-class joints like the Philmore Creamery in San Fran and Toscanini's in Cambridge Mass. Ray's stands with the very best. It's unassuming (everyone loves the retro look of the place, only it's not really "retro" since it's original and not a recreation) but the only thing that matters is the taste and quality of the product. The classics are all here -- incredible praline pecan, impeccable cinnamon (a longtime Ray's specialty that was once served on slices of apple pie at the Bill Knapp's restaurants) -- but most addictive of all for me is the Salted Caramel Mocha Chip. YMMV, to each his own. But Ray's, you are Royal Oak's crown jewel! Thanks for all of those calories over the years -- they were WORTH IT!

Yelp
A Royal Oak staple , first time here on a hit June night, really busy the staff was very nice and efficient. Lots of flavors to choose from and a decent amount of room to sit inside and out.

Yelp
Line was out the door on a Friday night, so I knew this was the place to be! We waited for maybe 10 minutes which wasn't too bad. Loved that they gave samples here while deciding what to order! I'm a sucker for blue food and drinks so of course I had to try the Cookie Monster, which I ordered in a kiddie cup. They honestly gave a good amount in the kiddie cup, so if you're not too hungry I would recommend that size. The blue moon ice cream base had an interesting aftertaste to me, somewhat like strong almond extract, which I didn't like too much. The cookies incorporated in it were a fun touch though and made the aftertaste more subtle. I would love to come back here and try some of their other flavors, they had so many options that sounded so delish!

Yelp
It's summertime so of course I went to get ice cream. I have had more ice cream this summer than I have ever had in my life, and while on my annual Michigan vacation, I had the pleasure of stumbling upon Ray's! My fiance grew up in the area, but he'd never had it, so we were both trying it out for the first time. We were in the area for 2 weeks, and visited Ray's at least 5 times LOL. The ice cream is just that good! I got one with peanut butter in it, and another that was banana flavored. So yummy! My fiance got Mackinaw fudge every time, and his was just as good! The prices are way lower than they should be, and it's always so busy, but it makes sense! And you will definitely be overwhelmed by the flavor selection, but there are no wrong choices!! There is bar seating inside, and table and bench seating outside; it's very throwback. Visit! You won't regret it!

Yelp
First time trying Ray's and it won't be last as I'm happy to see that have vegan flavors that are not sorbet and looking at some pictures of the menu from a week ago, they do rotate the flavors which is awesome! We definitely need more dairy free options. We both had size small and it was huge! You can also make two flavors in size small, which is super cool! I had the vegan butter pecan, and it was good, and it had a lot of pecans. Hubby tried two flavors of dairy ice cream, and he enjoyed it, too. Staff was quick and friendly despite long lines. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Rhonda A.

Yelp
Ray's is a Royal Oak staple. There is nothing better on a hot summer day - they always have a large variety of flavors and even have non-dairy options for those who need it. My all time favorite flavors are coffee and cinnamon! There is usually a line, but the service is efficient and it goes quick!
google avatar

Yelp
I love Ray's nostalgic ice cream polar and soda fountain vibe. Immediately when you step inside the doors you are taken back to the 1950's. You simply can't find that atmosphere anywhere else in the area which makes Ray's unique and fun! I've been coming here since i was a little kid and recently came for a Yelp Elite event. It was the perfect sweet treat on a hot summer day! I learned from a friend that they've been in business since 1958! There are over 40 flavors of ice cream including my dairy free sorbets and 2 different vegan ice creams. My favorites are Chocolate peanut butter and Fat Elvis. Their hand scooped ice cream is made on site and is so creamy and delicious! Portions are very generous and a small size is 2 scoops. Pints and quarts can be purchased at Rays or in specialty stores like Nino's Salvaggio or Papa Joe's. It gets very crowded and lines are almost always out the door at peak times but it's well worth the wait. It's no surprise that Ray's was voted best local ice cream parlor by Hour Detroit in 2022. I defiantly will be back this summer to try more of their seasonal flavors like Macinaw Island Fudge.

Yelp
Small parking lot, but plentiful seating both inside and out. I love the vibe in here, it's retro with an updated twist. I love the old fashioned counter and the ice cream was delicious! The young lady behind the counter was super nice and made some great suggestions. My husband and I shared 2 scoops, the Fat Elvis and Peanut butter chocolate. The Fat Elvis was icy instead of creamy, but the chocolate peanut butter hit the spot! If Ray's was closer it would easily be our go to ice cream place.
google avatar

Greg G.

Yelp
Super cute old-school ice cream shop. This place has the old soda jerk diner look. The people behind the counter were very friendly. We tried the chocolate peanut butter and the Fat Elvis flavored ice cream. The ce cream was pretty good. I loved the chocolate peanut butter the best. The Fat Elvis was a little on the icy side. Overall, this is a great neighborhood ice cream shop.
google avatar

Yelp
Great experience, the ice cream was delicious I love chocolate chip cookie dough it had the perfect amount of cookie doughs mixed in. The service was fast and friendly. I will definitely be back

Yelp
Ray's Ice Cream was a cute, 50's-style ice cream parlor with a relaxing tone and chill environment. When my friends and I hurriedly entered the establishment from the harsh winter cold, we were immediately greeted with a warm welcome by the staff. As a new customer, I browsed through the available selection of ice cream. Although I was given no assistance in my choice, the staff was very patient in my indecisiveness of the many available options from ice cream flavors to toppings. I ultimately settled for a beautiful, Double-Scoop Cookie Monster in a Cup. Upon first bite, I felt I was the Cookie Monster as I devoured the creamy deliciousness! It was a perfect blend of fulfilling texture and taste between a unique blue moon flavor and cookies & cream chunks. The experience was of the utmost quality and a fun memory with friends. I will definitely be making a second visit. Bring your spoon and join me!
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
The dairy free butter pecan is excellent! Employees are friendly and eager to help customers. While they don't solicit tips, the young workers are so grateful to receive them. Tip your servers and enjoy the best ice cream in the area!
google avatar

Kimberley S.

Yelp
Loved the YELP event! Long line but it was completely worth it! Ice cream was delicious ! And they let us try any one we wanted!!! Check them out!

Jordan S.

Yelp
Ice Cream is great. Worth the long wait in the line. New to the area, this is the first ice cream place my wife and I visited. We'll be back
google avatar

Cheryl S.

Yelp
Love your banana pudding ice cream please keep on stock!! Just left the store and they were out
google avatar

CJ M.

Yelp
Nice experience. The old school counter was a nostalgic touch. The place was busy as it was a hot day after work. We were served in a manageable time and the portions were big! Overall, we enjoyed the experience. The only knock was the ice cream flavors did not have a lot of substance - more cream than content. Wished for more crunch. We would come back if we were in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
I first got the chance to try Ray's Ice Cream at a Yelp event a few weeks ago and returned again last night with a friend. We got there 15 minutes before close (which I really hate doing) but the staff was still so friendly and eager to serve us and make conversation. It's a super cute old school cream shop with some diner seating and a couple of benches outside. Super creamy and tasty for a hot summer day! I've had the salted caramel mocha chip before and it's definitely one of my favorite ice creams. I got that for my boyfriend and then tried the White Russian for myself which is white chocolate ice cream with a fudge swirl. There definitely could've been more fudge but it was still tasty regardless!
google avatar

Shelby A.

Yelp
Always such a blast coming here! I only recently found this place as an adult, but the nostalgia is still so prevalent of a feeling for Ray's. The staff were incredibly kind, and helpful, and the ice cream was AMAZING. The menu is incredibly vast and I look forward for the opportunity to try many more things there!
google avatar

Vikash K.

Yelp
The best ice cream spot in the area for sure! Even with the long line you're in and out pretty quickly. Lot of seating with indoor bar area and outdoor seating. Place is always clean and friendly staff! Praline caramel .
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
went here for the elite event - first of all the smells alone are enough to buy the whole store! i had the almond coy ice cream (sooo good) because they were out of the velvet cake. but i will def be able to give that velvet cake a try!! can't wait! the place is super cute and friendly staff as well. great event yelp! #yelpelitedetroit #raysicecream
google avatar

Anna V.

Yelp
I'm glad there were some vegan options - some were sold out but lots of sorbet options to choose from! Line moved fast- great fast service! parking is a bit limited so be patient, and seating turns over quickly too. Small serving included 2 scoops, which I was able to get 2 different flavors - and $5.25 for "small" 2 scoop in waffle cone- my husband got the new collab Dutch girl Donuts red velvet ice cream. Neither of us could finish our ice cream but the do have to-go cups and lids, so we're able to take it home to enjoy any day!
google avatar

Yelp
Let me just start by saying that Rays Ice cream is delicious! I tried 4 flavors before choosing moose tracks and they all were yummy! The kids portion was plenty for me, but we did consider getting a baseball helmet sundae because it looked so good. It seemed as though yesterday they were training new staff because service was slow. The manager was helpful, greeted us when we walked in, but the servers were quiet. One young man who helped us was very kind and dealt with all the kids in our group very well, so we made sure to tip him. We will definitely be back for more delicious ice cream this summer!!!
google avatar

Adrienne A.

Yelp
Ray's has tons of flavors, and each is full of flavor. I can't seem to get past the cinnamon which tastes like everything you dream of at the holidays but in the middle of summer. For some reason, it tastes better purchased and eaten at the store rather than purchased by the gallon and brought home - still excellent but not quite the same for some reason. Anyway, I consider myself somewhat picky about what I consider good ice cream and I find few metro Detroit businesses that have what I consider to be truly good ice cream but Ray's is definitely one I recommend.
google avatar

Halle B.

Yelp
Truly a great experience and very delicious ice cream! They had a wide variety of flavors. The service was fast and friendly also. This really took us back in time, stopping in getting ice cream here with my grandparents. They would take my dad here all the time when he was younger and while on my visit, this was a MUST see stop. This location has been open since the 1950's and it's been a huge staple in the local community since then! When you walk inside it feels like you kind of went back in time. Literally almost transporting you back in time! Old school vibes in an old school town.
google avatar

Frank A. D.

Yelp
I can't believe that I have never been to the store,.!! Meijer carries Ray's ice cream so I decided to try it and I was blown away!! Gourmet ice cream all the way Now, I'm spoiled, every other brand is a disappointment.
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
They have the best service and really good homemade ice cream and homemade sherbet. The inside is very retro. It's almost like a 60s or 70s diner.
google avatar

Hasan I.

Yelp
Wowow where do I start ! The establishment was nice, clean and very well lit. A blast from the past experience from the moment you walk in the door with an array of flavors that I guarantee will make your mouth water. The service was fantastic, we were between multiple flavors and before even having the idea, the workers asked if we would like to try any. The ice cream is well priced for the size of scoop you get. The flavors are endless and all made in house. Rays, we will definitely be back
google avatar

Joy A.

Yelp
We went yesterday afternoon and were helped by a really nice lady who was very patient with my nieces. The sizes of the portions were generous. Always love coming here.
google avatar

Joseph H.

Yelp
Mini Golf and a waffle cone from Ray's are one of me and my Boobie's favorite dates. The peppermint shake here is a legitimate religious experience.
google avatar

Miriam I.

Yelp
Great selection, great ice cream. A classic - dependable. If you haven't tried Ray's, make trip. Your taste buds will thank you.
google avatar

Ruben R.

Yelp
Very popular spot so there may be a slight wait. Can't go wrong with their blueberry pie ice cream! Also very cool unique retro theme in the interior
google avatar

Kat T.

Yelp
Great retro cream parlor. Ice cream made right in shop. Lots of flavors. Banana split is expensive but is very good to share. They have these very cool ice cream molds and you can order molded and decorated ice cream shapes for special events. Friendly service and as expected busy on weekends.
google avatar

Doug V.

Yelp
This was a very fun local place to get ice cream. Have the old-fashioned feel of an ice cream counter and the ice cream is very good with lots of varieties. Fun place to go and look forward to going back.
google avatar

Jasmin G.

Yelp
This place was so crowded when I visited! It's such a cute place inside. Though they have tons of flavors, they do run out of the more popular ones quite quickly! I tried the praline pecan and cookies & cream ice cream and they both were so good. I would say that this place could get a little bit of an update in the interior without completely changing it, but otherwise I definitely recommend trying this place out!
google avatar

Sunny N.

Yelp
I went here a few nights ago and it was amazing. Our experience before this was fine but our ice cream tasted funny, we came back and somehow it improved a lot. The service was nice and fast as it took about 30 seconds for each order, the staff were very kind and did not waste a second. I got the White Russian ice cream (its kid safe as its not the drink its just white chocolate and fudge) and it was very good. If you have children you might want to request a smaller size than kids size as the staff are generous (in a good way). I love the 60's-70's diner style as it just feels nostalgic and welcoming. The best flavors in my opinion are White Russian, Strawberry, Vanilla, Mint Chip, Chocolate (this ones different for everybody some people think its too sweet). Honestly they need to improve on some things like the Matcha having Green Tea flakes still in it, but overall I would absolutely come back. 9.9/10 Ice Cream 10/10 experience.
google avatar

Gary B.

Yelp
Since my last review the business has been purchased by a couple who are making a lot of improvements in structure, marketing, and products. They will be replacing the worn looking floors and are enforcing clean standards. The new menu items are great--but as they do not have a liquor license, they can only sell the booze ice creams through licensed stores or dining spots. Strongly recommend.
google avatar

Doug R.

Yelp
Gawd, I love Ray's! I enjoy introducing my immigrant friends to this flashback to 1958.
google avatar

oralia l.

Yelp
If you're in the area, do yourself and anyone with you the favor of stopping in for some ice cream. It's such a great little spot that feels like you're stepping back in time. The quality of the ice cream is amazing and their prices are great and they have large portions just so you know
google avatar

Danielle T.

Yelp
Always has been one of my go to ice cream places! I was invited by yelp for a snowman sundae which was a cute pressed vanilla snowman with 2 toppings! It seemed small at first but truthfully just the right size! Rays is my favorite with so many homemade ice cream flavor options and many dairy free options also!
google avatar

Eowyn K.

Yelp
I popped into Rays (still open in the winter!). I like the local, old school feel of the place. They have a U shaped counter to sit at inside as well as outdoor tables. I was there for an event, and had "pressed" ice cream, vanilla in the form of a snow man. It was my first time at Rays, and the vanilla was awesome. I plan going back in warmer months to try some other flavors.
google avatar

Ashlee H.

Yelp
I'm happy that a Yelp event introduced me to Rays! I've passed by countless times since moving to the area four years ago. I got their whiskey chocolate and peanut butter and apple cider mill donut ice cream and it was absolutely amazing. I'll definitely be paying more visits to rays in the future!
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
Love this place. Super cute atmosphere. Friendly and welcoming staff. Kid friendly and fun. Baseball helmet ice cream ftw!!!
google avatar

Bryan O.

Yelp
This ice cream was 10/10 I will definitely be coming back. The ice cream and service was great
google avatar

Anthony B.

Yelp
I thought this place made all of their ice cream on site, I asked for some reason I asked and the girl there told me they don't. Some flavors are made by Hudsonville and some other makers. A solid 4 stars for traditional hard hand packed ice cream served. Prices are reasonable and the portions are adequate. A classic and staple of the Royal Oak and surrounding cities area. This is the 2nd time going after they were on several news stations after the owner started a go fund me campaign, and of course I did my part there and went in to support as well. But what is up with no Chocolate with Peanut Butter? How can they not have it the 2 times I've gone? The girl told me they normally have it, but they are out. If you are out, then maybe you should make more or buy more from where you get it. Is understand you cant carry every flavor, but maybe lose some of the not selling flavors instead.
google avatar

Alicia Z.

Yelp
Visited Ray's for 1st time. Owners and staff were so friendly and really passionate about this business. Ice cream was top notch. Brought some home to my husband and he commented on the creaminess and quality. Interior was a fun vintage vibe with the antique soda counters. I can see why they have long term and multi generation customers coming in as regulars. Owners are completely open to suggestions for flavors or how to best promote the business. It was a pleasure to visit.

Lindley G.

Yelp
Have eaten Ray's ice cream forever. My parents used to order their products years ago, and if I lived there, I would continue the tradition, as is when I am in town it is a definite visit to Ray's!

Ree L.

Yelp
My first time trying this place & I wasn't disappointed. So far I've only tried the sorbet and they were delicious. I'll definitely be back. My only suggestion would be that they should hire additional staff ;) PLS!
