Robot Cafe Considers Itself Pro-Worker by Not Hiring Any Workers | Eater

"Touted as Canada’s first “robotic cafe” or an “unattended espresso machine,” this automated kiosk brews coffee in a format reminiscent of a pay-per-cup dorm lounge machine but positions itself as a pro-worker alternative to staffed cafes. Its street signage—captured by a writer and bearing the quip “No Karen, you can’t talk to the manager, talk to our robot”—leans into the idea that automation can deflect difficult customer interactions. The cafe’s launch comes amid mass quits and rising customer entitlement in hospitality (reports cite things like tips being docked for enforcing COVID rules and 62% of hospitality workers saying customers are more demanding), and critics argue that replacing staff with machines doesn’t address root problems like low pay, lack of benefits, or the need for policies such as UBI and universal health care." - Jaya Saxena

Very promising and interesting concept! It's fast and convenient; just a few touches to get your coffee. I love the idea but the quality must be improved. Even though you save money (less overhead cost so it's cheaper than both local shops and chains like Starbucks), your drink might not be perfect. My matcha latte wasn't mixed well and had a huge chunk of matcha powder, but the overall taste is good. Came back for a latte and it was stellar this time!

Such a fun concept and reasonably priced too! I tried a hot chocolate here on a late night and was pleasantly surprised - nice and creamy and not too overly sweet. It wasn't the best hot chocolate I've ever had, but definitely way better than a Tim's. I came back the next day and tried a latte. It was ok - not as impressive, but got the job done. I would love to try all the drinks on the menu - if I lived nearby, I'd probably become a regular!

Cool concept with okay coffee. Getting started with the app and payment was a bit tricky at first, almost not worth the effort. I understand the convenience of automation and the price that goes with maintaining it, but the taste doesn’t match the cost. If I’m being honest I’d rather do a Timmie’s run. But overall if the line up at Tim’s is too long then I could see myself at this kiosk again

It’s a nice futuristic place Quite fun to order, small selection of drinks everything looks neat and organized I would recommend it as an experience to feel yourself in the future Drinks is good but they are standard, so don’t expect much Quite convenient 2 ways of ordering options Online and at the kiosk

Unexpectedly stumbled at the RC coffee Robo Cafe and found it totally interesting and innovative to see a Robot preparing and serving our coffee. The process is smooth and the wait time was around 2 minutes after payment. The taste was off course different from the coffee prepared by human barista. Its an easy stop , available 24*7 and worth giving a try.

Coffee quality is poor - better visiting a Starbucks. This is a standard coffee machine with a robotic arm to move the coffee from the machine to the counter

I would be so sad if this kiosk left. I have loved coming here for over 3 years. It is very enjoyable to simply order my drink and then receive it in this way. I love the points and the referral system and the coffee is very delicious. Additionally another great thing is I can bring my pets while I get a coffee because I don't enter any cafe (it would be disrespectful of public health bylaws to bring your pets in a food premises) and I don't have to leave them outside unattended. Thank you very much for making it so accessible for everyone who literally could be on the sidewalk.

I was sceptical at first, but pleasantly surprised at how good my latte was. My friend’s mocha was a bit full and spilled over, but it tasted good. My own latte was great and smelled great and the coffee that went into it was good quality. I know folks have strong opinions about automating jobs, but another way of looking at this addition to the beverage retailing industry is to see it as an evolution of the humble coffee and tea vending machines that have been around forever. Also the machine gives you no attitude and doesn’t pre-add an 18% tip when you try to pay for almost anything these days in Toronto. 😉
