On the Grid : Cafe R+D

"A Hillstone concept, Cafe R+D just nails it. The very tidy, curated, but ridiculously diverse menu is so strong. Whether you get sushi, a tuna salad sandwich, or a filet mignon it's all delicious. Mid-century contemporary decor is amazing. Energy is palpable. Service is spectacular. Dinner is fine, but R+D is a great lunch or brunch spot as well. Enjoy." - Switch

Google
We tried this place recently for lunch as it was recommended by several people at work. Make sure to give yourself 10-15 min to circle the parking lot and find a spot and walk to the restaurant. Parking is extremely limited. We had a reservation at 12:15. We checked in at 12:12 and didn’t get seated until 12:32. Not a great start, but the food was pretty good. We started with the deviled eggs and rainbow roll. Both had great flavor. My wife tried the tuna salad sandwich and I ordered the Little Mo. Both were tasty and a good portion size. We tried a side of the shrimp and grits as well, which were good. Overall, it was good, but with the parking and the wait, we don’t need to hurry back.

Google
It is one of our favorite places to go to celebrate our birthdays. We love to start with the dip duo. I always get the Asian chicken noodle salad. The special today was the sole. Everything was so good!!

Google
A Highland Park staple that services consistency. The food is always delicious as expected. The service is why I return. However the chicken sandwich is not as tasty as i remembered but it will not deter me from returning. I recommend all sushi dishes and burger.

Nicholas Eckert

Google
This place is simply amazing. The waitstaff was wonderful and attentive. The food was incredible and full of flavor. The chef came out to apologize for our wait to be sat even though it was only a 30 minutes which was beyond unnecessary but shows how in touch the staff really is with their customers. We were coming back anyway as it was phenomenal but that was an extremely nice touch. Would recommend to anyone and can’t wait to come back!

Google
I believe there’s a valuable lesson in the exceptional team-based service demonstrated at Hillstone restaurants that more eateries could benefit from adopting. During my recent lunch, I noticed several thoughtful touches that enhanced our dining experience, such as refreshing our cocktails with colder ones and promptly refilling chips to accompany our dips—all while maintaining a seamless atmosphere. Furthermore, I appreciated the thoughtfully curated limited menu, which offered a variety of consistently good options without overwhelming us. The freshness of the items is also commendable; it’s clear that they value their ingredients, and when something is sold out, it's a testament to their careful preparation, even amidst a busy service. Overall, the staff provided a wonderful experience, and I left with a desire to return. I hope that more restaurant establishments can embrace similar standards of service, as it truly elevates the dining experience for everyone.

Google
We had such a great experience at R+D Kitchen last night. The restaurant is beautiful, and the staff was amazing. I've always been a big fan of Hillstone restaurants because of the consistency of the food and service. We had the deviled eggs, Burrata cheese toast (perfection) and the Yellowtail & kale salad. The crisp martini is a new fav for me! Our server, Vanessa was great! She was attentive but not intrusive. We'll definitely be back!

Google
One of my favorite spots in Dallas hands down. You truly can’t go wrong with their menu, but my husband loves the chicken sandwich and I always get my own sushi (a nigiri plate and their Osaka pressed sushi). Hot fudge sundae for dessert is a must! This is an intimate restaurant great for dates, so they don’t typically seat large parties which keeps the vibes for date night perfect.

Google
We had an amazing time at R+D Kitchen! The ambiance is warm yet not too formal and our service was excellent. All of the food we got was recommended by the staff and it was fantastic. I highly recommend starting with the dip duo (guacamole and pimento cheese). The fried chicken sandwich was delicious with a perfectly crispy chicken breast with nice mustard and toppings. The rainbow roll was also excellent. To top it off, we got the banana pie which was great. Tip- ask for it with hot fudge. We will for sure come back to R+D Kitchen! Note- make sure to make a reservation. The wait for those without a reservation was over an hour when we went.

Yelp
The sushi was unique and very flavorful. The restaurant is very cute inside. The service was a little slow at times but they were busy. It felt like they kept skipping over us but they were super nice. Will def be back to try the mini chicken sandwiches. Everyone near us kept ordering them and they looked so good.

Yelp
I've never anything but a DELICIOUS experience at R+D Kitchen. It may be one of my top restaurants in Dallas. The best way for me to describe their food is fresh, simple and high quality. Here is what we ordered and how I would rate: - Sashimi with kale salad (8/10) - The Newport salad w/ roasted chicken (8/10) - Thai tuna roll (9/10) - Wild mushroom meatloaf (9/10) - Osaka style pressed sushi (10/10) I'll be thinking about the pressed sushi forever! The fish was so fresh and it was topped with flaky sea salt. The meatloaf was also fantastic... don't sleep on the meatloaf bc it's cooked to perfection with amazing flavor and glaze. I'm drooling just thinking back to this meal and our service as always was 10/10. :)

Yelp
We had a reservation... unfortunately they were so busy. We waited a cool 25 to 30 minutes.. A little disappointed that they tried to upsell us on the cocktails . We were really just interested in sushi . And we asked several times about cocktails. The food is very nice. We enjoyed all the sushi choices. Our favorite was the sampler with the yellowtail bluefin. And salmon. I think we would go back thr sushi was good.

Yelp
Decent service. My family has been coming here for ten years now and the service has slowly declined since then-- it's not the same. If you're expecting incredible service I wouldn't necessarily recommend this place but the food is great! Sushi is amazing. Very fresh & delicious. It's really the only reason we come back. Ambiance is fun! It's always very lively & energetic because it's usually always packed. Waited around 45 minutes to 1 hour on a Tuesday afternoon.

Yelp
Had a great experience tonight! We got a variety of different food, including the deviled eggs (YUM), the ozuna roll ( YUM x2!), the Asian noodle salad, fried chicken sandwich, and the Thai tuna roll. My personal favorite was the Ozuna roll, which was tasty and well plated. The Thai Tuna roll was good, but there was a mustard-y taste to it that I was not expecting, but I liked the crunch a lot! Our server was amazing, very friendly and attentive. The restaurant has plenty of parking and super well decorated.
google avatar

Shaina C.

Yelp
The service was great! Also the coconut shrimp was delicious. I wish they had one more dessert option but the carrot cake as still good. Wasn't a fan of the burger, it was nothing special.

Kayla L.

Yelp
Service at the bar is spotty, but the drinks and meal were great! The meatloaf is to die for, and the duo dip is always a must. Love the dim lighting & exposed beams that give the restaurant a lounge-like ambiance.
google avatar

Erika T.

Yelp
Nice ambiance, decent service, and good food! The service kind of toned down as it got busier but our food came out quick. The sushi was surprisingly good and did not have a fishy or old taste at all. The rotisserie chicken was juicy and flavorful (a bit on the saltier side) but still yummy. My fav dish would be the Nigiri plate. I also ordered a cocktail which was super strong but I think is a good sign. Overall a decent spot to try!

Yelp
Finally got a chance to try this place out for a weekend lunch! Fun fact about this restaurant: they started as a Research and Development for their sister restaurant next door but people ended up loving it that here they are! We got the Asian chicken salad and their chicken sandwich as well as a sushi roll and fries. Their sushi's are unique with healthy alternative wraps. Everything is pricey but honestly the flavor was there and their portions are decent. Fried chicken sandwich was delicious but the chicken is extremely thin. I think the tomatoes might have been thicker. Fries were delicious! The service was excellent! Very attentive to us. My only complaint is they didn't have a high chair for us. We went during lunch and there were plenty of families dining so kind of disappointed there but overall we enjoyed our time and would definitely be back whenever we are in town.

Yelp
Had a great time celebrating my birthday this past weekend here. The drinks and food were great! Our waitress was very kind and recommended some great dishes to try out. I highly recommend the chicken sandwich and the hamachi roll!

Yelp
Service is always great. Food is not as good as I remember it. Used to love the Club Salad at Houston's - so I thought I could satiate that memory again. Wrong. Tried the closest thing they had to it - and it was very meh. I went back again several weeks later and had the expensive cheeseburger. I wish I had returned it. Seriously. I know these two particular items are not representative of the entire menu - in fact, they are on the lower end. However, with $16+ wine by the glass, I had hoped for more. Houston's was a big loss for many of us... Ambiance is off the chart though any time of day. That is reminiscent of the old Houston's and I still love it.

Mike M.

Yelp
Great food & drink. The bartenders are excellent & attentive. The Osaka style pressed sushi is delicious!

Yelp
I always have a great experience here. Good food, service is excellent, staff is very nice and outside seating is perfect when the weather is nice.

Yelp
Came late on Saturday night and we got seated even earlier than our reservation thanks to the sweet hostess. First off: drinks were amazing but strong! I liked it so much but they pack a punch so next time I need to remember to slow down haha. Food: absolutely perfect. Casual dinner but nothing lacked in flavor or presentation. The only downside was I was stuffed (even with not finishing my salad) that I couldn't get the sundae. Still so sad about that the next day and want to go back for a glass of wine and the sundae. Upbeat vibes but still the feel of your casual neighborhood spot.

Yelp
My wife and I have loved this place for years as our "go-to" lunch place in North Dallas. Sadly, that ended today. When did they decide to focus on Asian cuisine? There is sushi roll after sushi roll, and then a selection of Asian salads. My wife ordered one of the salads, which was over-the-top heavy on cilantro, which she hates. We split a cucumber-avocado roll. Totally tasteless. I had a cheeseburger. Someone needs to tell the kitchen that when you pile cold lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes on a cheeseburger, and then cut it in half, you get a very cold cheeseburger. This feels like a restaurant that has lost its way. It's comfortable and pleasant, but the food isn't very good.
google avatar

Skip S.

Yelp
Loved this salad. Mediterranean Tuna Salad. Also the Cheeseburger was great. Chicken meatballs were nice as appetizer.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
Parking was totally open today. Seemed a little slower than usual. Which was great. I love the Dip duo it's always a great starter. Depending on how hungry I'll get done sushi or something easy. The fries are always a go to. It's always pretty busy and the service is usually good. It's a nice vibe.

Yelp
The Hillstone restaurants are always good, with exceptional service and a great environment and R+D Kitchen is no exception. They have a wide variety of food choices, this location has sushi and the fish is fresh and great quality. I tried the nigiri plate and it was a step above your normal sushi place. The chicken sandwich is a more recent favorite for me, it's hard to describe but just get it you won't regret it! The beauty of this location is you can get sushi and bring people who wouldn't normally eat sushi because they have a full restaurant menu as well and everything I've tried has been good. Definitely save room for dessert, the hot fudge sundae is the best you'll ever have. The vanilla ice cream is incredible and it's accompanied by candied pecans, hot fudge (extra in a ladle), and whip cream it's something that I make a drive for. Make sure to make a reservation for the evenings as they do get busy!

Yelp
Our family went there for our 67th anniversary. Everything we had was delicious. Our son recommended as a starter, the pimento cheese and guacamole dip. Magnificent. All of us had sole and it also was delicious. The service was great. All in all, a delightful experience

Yelp
Dined here on 01/07/2023, food and service were on point. Wait time was 45 minutes without a reservation. Its sister restaurant, Hillstone, across the parking lot, 1 hour 45 minute wait. So we hopped on over to R+D Kitchen. This was my third time here. The other two times were years ago. Everything we ordered came out perfect but for the roasted salmon, which was overcooked. Dip Duo - awesome - best pimento cheese ever, guac was also fresh and tasty Filet - overpriced but cooked well. Salmon - tasted off and was also overcooked so ordered the chicken. The manager did not question my judgment, which I loved. Rotisserie chicken - amazing - but was too full to enjoy it Downside about this restaurant is that they will only take walk-ins if you're a party of five and there are only three tables that can accommodate that.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a good time here. Service was good. I will say they were strict on the no hat rule in the dining area, so one of our guests just left and they didn't make a fuss about canceling his order. Our waitress was attentive and understanding. The burger was ok to me, vibes may be better than the food. If You liked the chicken sandwich from Houston's.. they have it here now. That's what I should've gotten
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
We love R&D. It is one of the few places where you can get a great steak or seafood, along with hand-rolled sushi. The food never disappoints. The waitstaff are always very friendly and accommodating. They have a nice craft cocktail list, along with many wines by the bottle or glass. It can get fairly crowded, so I suggest a reservation. Either that or go early.
google avatar

Yelp
I visited this place on a busy Saturday afternoon and was lucky enough to catch a spot at the bar. I was able to try a few entrées and these two stood out amongst the rest: Asian Chicken & Noodle Salad and the Coconut Shrimp Roll. The salad is presented fun and festive and tastes like a party in your mouth. I've had many different types of salads and this one is definitely in the " Top" conversation. For the coconut roll, I think I should preface by saying I have never been a fan of sushi of any kind. This was only my second time having it, and WOW! Maybe it was just a case of the perfect time, setting, and place or maybe it was just my imagination; who knows. Just know that I look forward to joining my girlfriends on their next sushi outing (coconut shrimp rolls only though... because baby steps).
google avatar

Lily Q.

Yelp
A research and development restaurant to test dishes and then some of the successful ones are served at Hillstone (their sister restaurant). They have sushi, burgers, sandwiches and salads but we only tried the sushi. It's definitely a cool concept to mix different dishes in a modern American restaurant. Atmosphere is nice and they have a bar for drinks at the center which is fun. Some of the sushi is definitely unique and I really like the coconut shrimp sushi because it's unconventional but somehow works. The servers are super fun and attentive so that's another plus. I'm super curious about Hillstone now so I might need to check out that restaurant next.

Yelp
R+D is always a winner! I've only had lunch here but every meal has been outstanding. I HIGHLY recommend making a reservation as it gets packed almost every day! The service is always outstanding and the ambiance is a 10/10. I've had the sushi rolls and the cashew salad. Both were delicious but I think this kale cash's salad wins! It's super delicious (maybe not the healthiest) and it leaves you not wanting for more. Their apps are also super tasty. But the ambiance is super cool. I am not sure if it's an older building just the natural daylight that pours in through the sunlight like ceiling is super amazing. Even on a cloudy day you feel like you are in some beautiful sun!

Yelp
Quiet and very comfortable environment. We really like all the booths. Service was extremely well performed by Kayla. She was pleasant, did not push us to be in a hurry, and yet was attentive. The food was all good here as usual. We started with the deviled eggs. You only get three have eggs so remember that if you want to share. Entrées and sandwiches are pretty expensive for lunch, but at the same time tasty. The sashimi and cashew kale salad Was very good but not a ton of sashimi for $25. The Carnitas sandwich was excellent. In my prior review a year ago I said I would not order it again. Guess I lied! This time I really enjoyed it. Perhaps it has changed. All the taste combinations in that sandwich explode. The sandwich by itself was $18 but if you decide to have fries or a small salad expect another $7-8. The food is good, but but not so good as to deserve those prices. $69 for 2 before tip seemed a bit pricey to me.
google avatar

Cori A.

Yelp
Always top notch service and food. They have unique sushi dishes that you can't find at a regular place. Wine selection is good. Salads are amazing. Get here early or make reservations if you don't want a wait!!!
google avatar

Diana K.

Yelp
We used to love R&D for their consistency but definitely feels like the quality and portions of the food have gone downhill the last two visits. Add to that I found a curly hair wrapped in one of my sushi rolls. They comped the roll and provided a different dish free of charge and the manager came over to apologize... but didn't make up for the fact that all the portions have continued to get smaller (two meatballs for the meatball app and 1.5 eggs for the deviled eggs) and the rising prices don't justify the quality of the food. Service is usually decent/good. probably won't be back for awhile tbh.
google avatar

Pamela H.

Yelp
I have been here twice. OMG. The Petrole Sole is AMAZING. I want to order a double! You get 2 pan fried panko filets. They are cooked to perfection. The crumb is light and perfectly browned and the fish is cooked perfect and moist. It is served with cole slaw that works so well with the fish. It also comes with tartar sauce but I have never touched it. This meal goes perfect with the Walt Pinot Noir. Christine is friendly and attentive. I also like the clientele and have met several woman here. The decor is light and welcoming. Not stuffy like their partner. Highly recommend and will be going again in the near future.
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
The food, service and atmosphere here are exemplary. The menu isn't extensive but there are plenty of choices and variety. The cheese burger & chicken sandwich are fantastic. The fries are ok and way overpriced for the very small portion. Nice selection of wine.
google avatar

Nick D.

Yelp
Really good as with every R+D / Honor Bar/ Hillstone restaurant. Service was good and the Carnitas sandwich was a highlight.
google avatar

Sharman V.

Yelp
I went for my birthday and I'm so embarrassed that I made my friends suffer through that experience. The manager was just awful, extremely rude and douchey. Waitresses were good, but service was slow, food was mediocre. Will not be back.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Great service, good atmosphere. A few rolls and a steak. Sat at the bar and enjoyed it. Will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Loved the ambience! The drinks were fantastic. One of the best dirty martinis I've had in a long time. Food was exceptional. Celebrated a friend's bday here. I wish they did something special to recognize bdays but otherwise it was a beautiful evening.
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
R+D Kitchen is such a consistent experience. To me, it's like having my favorite spicy tuna roll - it just hits the spot. I don't go here often enough, as I forget about it sometimes, but I'm so satisfied every time I do. The food is always fresh, beautifully plated, and expertly seasoned, and the service is warm and efficient. There are booths galore for seating. The ambiance can easily make for an intimate date night, dinner with your parents, or even a fun night out with friends. I might slightly prefer this place for a late lunch as the dinner crowd gets a bit loud (am I showing my age)? Definitely make a reservation for dinner, especially on weekends.
google avatar

Hannah V.

Yelp
Decided to make us a reservation at R + D Kitchen as I've seen multiple good reviews recently. Giving 1/5 for service which is ultimately why we will not be going back. Showed up for our 8:15 reservation at 8:17 and was not seated until 8:49. We requested updates on our seating arrangement multiple times and where dismissed by the hostess. Due to this we requested to speak to the manager as we were seated. We expressed our frustrations and the shortcomings of service upon arrival. We were credited a free appetizer, which while it was appreciated felt very "if a customer complains give them a free appetizer". For the price you are paying, everything should be exceptional. Food was a good 4/5. But ultimately the service tanked our experience and any chance of us recommending this place. Also, anyone else no notice there an no comments on and comments for poor experience? They don't care, chain restaurant mentality. I'll be taking my money elsewhere.
google avatar

Codi B.

Yelp
Came in for lunch the other day, super cool place in the inside and out. The menu is smaller than others; but offers a good variety of things. I love that they have a sushi option! My friend and I tried the deviled eggs and chicken meatballs to start. Both were really good; the eggs were a tad better though. I ordered the cashew kale salad which was splendid; I love salads that are smaller cut and have just the right amount of dressing to compliment the green, and this was perfect. I also tried the Hiramasa roll; it was pretty tasty and the add of jicama was very nice. Overall presentation of the food and taste is 5/5. The service was great as well. Price point vs portion size was higher in my opinion; but it's Dallas and it's a nice spot. That pertains more to the sushi. Overall I would definitely come back. So happy to try a new place.

Yelp
everytime my family and i visit dallas we have to grab a meal at r+d kitchen. every item on the menu is divine and i always have a hard time deciding between all the tempting options. we made a reservation at 7 and were seated on time. our server was such a delight, so kind and attentive. my sisters and i split a dip duo to start and ordered sushi for our entrees. i love love love this restaurant.
google avatar

Ruben S.

Yelp
It's decent here, solid food at a reasonable price. Service was ok. Ambiance was good.
google avatar

Myles D.

Yelp
From what I understand R+D Kitchen was initially created to test out food that the owners were going to serve at their other restaurants, but it eventually became so popular in its own right that those very items became the restaurant's signature dishes. Pretty cool. As you would expect, the food is outstanding. The great thing is that they have such a wide assortment of different items, so it's a veritable smorgasbord of cuisine, perfect for sharing in groups, on a date, or to sample alone if you're just an adventurous gourmand. The burger might be the best in Dallas, made with the most tender ground beef and served with cucumbers, something I've never seen anyone do anywhere else. Their cocktails are magical too. From mojitos to martinis, they are as delicious as they are strong, and you can't go wrong with any of them. It's also one of the few dining establishments I'd love to call home. The architecture inside is just stunning. There are lots of high beams that all lean towards the bar area, which inadvertently open up the restaurant while also providing a very relaxing cabin mood attributed to the gorgeous wood paneling. There's also a beautiful outdoor patio next to an infinity pond that adds a little extra calm to your dining experience. It all amounts to a very intimate and equanimous time that makes you want to unwind and bask in the refined allure of one of the metroplex's best.

Yelp
Went in on a relatively busy Friday afternoon with a friend and was immediately sat and met with great and hospitable service. Get the dip duo if you're a fan of pimento and if you're a sane human you're gonna have to ask for extra chips. Got two sushi rolls the pressed and mango tango, both were great but portions just a bit small for the price but still tasted amazing. I've heard the chicken sandwich is great and rich. Overall great ambience in Dallas and will be back

Shreill W.

Yelp
The food The service The ambiance All very good... Went back on Sunday but the wait was too long. We were starving

Margo D.

Yelp
1 hour ten minute wait. tables were open. Under staffed. we were told 45 minute wait. And while we were eating the clean up crew was cleaning under tables around us while we were eating.

Binti T.

Yelp
Love have inmate it was !! Perfect a date night!! Amazing drinks and food! We also had dessert which we never do but the food portion allowed for it

Corie L.

Yelp
The food was amazing. We started with their Dip Duo (guac and pimento cheese).. didn't sound appealing when I heard that combo, but surprisingly delightful. Good selection of wine. My salad, the Mediterranean Tuna, was top tier. My boyfriend got the hamburger, it was demolished. We took the time to look at other people's food as it came out, and we're impressed on the presentation. The ambiance was very intimate. We only sat at the bar, as we happened upon this place, but it was a great experience!

Yelp
Ashley Haymaker - the GM is an absolute nightmare. Incredibly unprofessional. While I can respect anyone trying to improve their efficiency, cost, etc. it is a shame that after spending $500+ at this particular chain RD - she came out to yell at me and my gf's messed around with a massive table lamp, being publicly accused of trying to steal it? She claimed she had us on camera putting it in our purses when our Chanel bags aren't big enough to? It's insane. I am shook by this. Horrifying.

Yelp
I have never ever been to a place this bad even when I HAVE NOT tried a single thing on the menu. I walked in, lined up, waited for the waitress. She approached and literally walked past me to the 2 white ladies standing BEHIND ME. Until one of them was nice enough to point to me and tell the waitress that I was here before them. Now at the bar seating, another waitress/bartender put the glass of water right in front of me, loud, without saying anything. I finally got to tell them what I wanted for entrée, she literally replied me with "K." Call me a sensitive b!tch or anything but I was the only Asian in this restaurant, at this moment, so it's really hard not to think of racism. If it really is, guys, it's almost 2025 - racism will not get you guys far on tiktok. Or maybe this world.

Yelp
What if we were all about to die in the dreaded Zombie Apocalypse, and I had to choose the restaurant where I'd have my last meal? R+D Kitchen would be on the short-list for sure! ;-) Recently I was passing through Dallas, and a local friend suggested we visit R+D Kitchen to catch up over dinner. When I realized that this was one of the links in the Hillstone chain I agreed immediately; I've been to a couple of the R+D Kitchen locations in SoCal, and I'm a total fan of both their food and ambiance. The menu is short and sweet, and everything I've had there is excellent. If you want something quick to munch on over cocktails, I recommend the Dip Duo and a Grey Goose Greyhound. The former is instantly addictive, and the latter can take the sting out of anything - even mask mandates and impending government shutdowns ;-) Whatever you choose for your meal, while the menu is limited, it's simply impossible to go wrong. After a brief consultation, my friend and I decided to share a Ding's Crispy Chicken sandwich and the Wild Mushroom Meatloaf with an order of thick, deliciously perfect fries to share between us. The Ding's chicken sandwich is one of the best of its type I've ever had, and the Meatloaf was moist, delicious, and perfectly seasoned. Note: While I was slightly disappointed not to see the French Dip sandwich on the menu here, I remembered both the other mains from previous R+D experiences in SoCal, and everything tasted just as wonderful now as then :-) Bring on the Zombies - if you come here before they eat your brains, you'll die happy ;-)

Yelp
The have the best hot fudge sundae in Dallas. The salmon is very tasty. The sushi is also worth trying. The wait is often long for dinner.
