Okay folks, this was one of the most unusual dining experiences I've had. The food was fabulous, and if I was going just off the food this would be a 5 star review. But the service was close to terrible. We showed up and waited at the host stand for a while with no one seeming to notice that we were there and no host to be found. Then, when we were finally seated, it took much too long for our waiter to come say hello, give us water, etc. And, for the rest of the meal, we had to flag him down every time we needed anything. He never came by to check on us or even refill waters. But the most astounding part, and I promise I'm not making this up, is that the restaurant ran out of plates. Yes, seriously. And no, we weren't there at the end of the night. It was 6:30 and they gave us 5 saucers (yes, the thing that a tea cup sits on) for the 6 of us and that is it. For the entire meal, appetizers, dinner and dessert we had to use those saucers. We asked for plates and they said they were out. Now I don't know if they are short on dishwashers or what, but when you're charging $42 for pasta, $60 for a steak and $18 for a cocktail, you absolutely can't use that as an excuse. The manager, general manager or owner should be back in the kitchen washing dishes if need be. You can't be a high end restaurant and tell your guests that they'll have to use little saucers because you don't have any plates. Absolutely ridiculous.
Okay, now on to the food which was, truly, fantastic.
I had the Biscotti Old Fashioned cocktail, which was fabulous. My wife had the Canella cocktail, also really delicious. Our friends had martinis which were well done.
For appetizers we had the ricotta and Caesar salad. The Caesar was standard, the ricotta was fabulous. It's whipped into a light cream and served with honey and toasted garlic, with crostini on the side. Easy to share and absolutely delicious. At $16 it was one of the more reasonably priced items on the menu.
For our main course we shared the basil pesto garganelli, the lump crab squid ink pasta, the lamb bolognese rigatoni and the boneless ribeye steak. They were all delicious, and while the crab pasta was overpriced at $42, it did come with a good portion of lump crab. The steak, as you can see in the picture, was not all that big and at $60 it was overpriced. The parmesean fries were good and the crispy Brussel sprouts were fantastic.
For dessert we had the cheesecake, budino, and gelato. They were good, the cheesecake was the best.
So honestly the dilemma here is whether to go back. One one had the Pendry hotel is a beautiful setting and the restaurant is a great space. The food, though overpriced, is fabulous. But, on the other hand, you can't charge those prices and have poor service and no plates. It's pretty absurd. There are other restaurants in Baltimore with equally good food, but they also have the service and dishware to go with it. I think I'll stick to those places from now on.
