Where to Imbibe During SF Pride 2018

"Not usually an LGBT destination, SoMa cocktail bar Forgery and its attached dance club Verso will be lesbian central on Friday night (6/22) with UHAUL’s Pride kickoff party starting at 9 p.m. The club space is huge, with a mezzanine that wraps around it on three sides, but the bar at Forgery is cozier and known for some solid mixology. Los Angeles DJ Good Boy and Las Vegas’s DJ C-L.A. will be spinning, and yes, bottle service is available in a couple of VIP lounge areas." - Jay C. Barmann

The Best Way to Show Proof of Vaccination at San Francisco Restaurants | Eater SF

"A bartender at the Recovery Room in Excelsior told me about a regular who switches her phone background to an image of her vaccine card when she goes out so she doesn’t even have to unlock her screen — what a legend — which shows how some patrons create clever shortcuts to speed up digital proof checks." - Becky Duffett

Google
An unexpected location, but that’s exactly what gives this place its charm. Once you walk inside, everything becomes clear — where to order and where to go next. The space is compact yet arranged well enough that even with kids you can wait comfortably, though personally I’d choose takeout if visiting with little ones. Now to the most important part — the food truly impresses. Every dish comes out fresh, juicy, and generously prepared. Each burger we tried had its own character and every one of them delivered great flavor. The fries were perfectly cooked, with a rich taste and great texture — definitely something you want to order again. The atmosphere also left a positive impression: lively, friendly, and full of good energy. Even with the bar area nearby, the staff makes sure everyone feels comfortable. This is definitely a place worth returning to. When we’re back in the area, we’ll absolutely stop by again. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates great food and a relaxed vibe.

Google
Great dive bar atmosphere for chill drinks, good company and some small bites (or even a meal). This place has friendly bartenders, good drink options and chill patrons. There's always the game you want to watch on one of their TVs, and if there isnt, the staff is happy to try and find it for you.

Google
A place close to my work. They seem to be a good sports bar! I like the decor here and their burgers were amazing! The servers were very nice and patient with us. I would recommend here :)

Google
Don't let the name detour you! Just walk directly to the back and you'll see a podium. The menu's are there for you to take and order. Seating is very limited and if you have children their is a sectional to sit on but beware the customers at the bar are drinking and cursing. They did tone it down when they seen my grandson. I know it's funny that children are allowed but it's because the restaurant is located to the back and tables and chairs are there for the sit down customers. I actually walked in first then asked if children were allowed because I was still in shock of the location but I'm so happy we ate here.. well, actually we'll take it to go if we have our grandson. Now let me tell you about the food..VERY DELISH!!! JUICY!! VERY LARGE PORTIONS! We had the Classic, Sheriff and I think American? All were hella yummy! I had the Sheriff's and couldn't finish it all so my hun finished it off and he loved it more than his Classic. We ordered the large fries and they were seasoned to perfection.. all I know is when we're back in town.. we're doing a drive by! Thanks guys! You should open a shop in Union City/Hayward area!

Google
Dive bar vibe, because that is what it is. Food is not bad, decent burger on the salty side, crispy onion rings that were not greasy. I don't recommend the jalapeno poppers. Beer selection is ok. Basic liquor selection. A decent local bar.

Google
Our band has played here a couple of times. Very nice place. Good parking. Nice bartenders. Hope we get invited back!

Google
This was my 1st time here. I don't drink so they do have 00 Heineken which is a non-alcoholic beverage an ice water with lemon which is my number one beverage😉! Before I go anywhere I always go on Google or Yelp and read the reviews. I'm a social butterfly 🦋 so, I spoke to people 1st at the bar area! Plus, I was invited by my girl who's a bartender there. It was a Sunday night which I never go out for karaoke on that night because I'm usually in church all night and handling other things. I came on a good night because it was someone's birthday! So, they had barbecue chicken and barbecue ribs, other dishes and some delicious b-day 🍍 upside down cake, that my girl the bartender had made💜🍍🍰. Like any new venue that belongs to people in the neighborhood or regulars, when you first walk in everybody gives you that look, like who's that girl😉(in my Eve🎵💜 voice) lol. Everyone was cool as time permitted & once we all mingled and especially after I sang a Kareoke song🎤💜🎵. Karaoke DJ was cool and there was some cool people there as well that I got a chance to dance with. We had fun! Now, a ladies room/restroom, will tell me exactly how clean this place is and/or how people care about the place they work in. The handicap larger stall toilet was stopped up. The smell was unpleasant! The second stale is made for a small/very skinny woman and I am a juicy woman💜. It was very tight! Not only was it tight I had noticed a lot of cobwebs and dust everywhere, on the walls, on the top of the bathroom stall doors, the ceiling, it was so filthy & dirty, I was afraid to tinkle! I literally held my breath the entire time I was in there. And being a person who is allergic to spiders and having to carry an EpiPen in my purse. I was horrified and looking around to make sure nothing didn't drop on me or bite me. There are no hooks strong enough to hold your purse when you come out the bathroom to wash your hands. Based on the filthiness of the woman's bathroom, I would never order food from this place! If the bathrooms look like that, I could imagine what the kitchen looks like. I ended up leaving around 12:25 a.m. because I needed to go home so I could tinkle again. I refuse to go back into that bathroom! The karaoke stage is large and they use clean and new microphone covers for each singer. The lights on the stage could be dimmed a little and they make you hot and there could be a strobe light added to give it a more lively vibe. Overall I had a great time and good vibes!!

Google
The wings were the highlight of my meal. The staff is always warm, inviting and helpful. I like that it is still a neighborhood joint. They have a decent beer selection.
google avatar

Vanessa B.

Yelp
The wings are worth the hype. We ordered the MVP (sweet and spicy soy flavor) and the seasoned fries. Everything was delicious - the wings were flavorful with the perfect amount of crunch, and the fries were perfectly seasoned with a great crispy bite. The vibe of the place was also chill and casual; on a Saturday afternoon every seat at the bar was taken and it was an overall relaxed atmosphere. The bartender was cool and our food was delivered quickly. All in all, a great find and experience, and I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a no frills, just cool, bar.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here on a Saturday night to watch football. We heard great things about this place so decided to check it out for ourselves. We walked in and the place very spacious. Not too busy, so we were able to grab a table and they had all the big games playing. The guys behind the bar - Glen and Jay - were awesome!! Very attentive and friendly. While we were there we ordered food from "The Hidden Spot", which is located all the way in the back of the bar. The two spots are not connected so you'll need to pay separately. We heard so many good things about their wings and they were delicious. $10 for 5 wings or $18 for 10. We wanted to try a couple different flavors and they were both really good. The place has a chill vibe, no frills, just a fun neighborhood bar. We had a great time and will definitely be back again.

Yelp
This is a great place to meet with friends for a drink but the food is amazing at this place. I usually don't eat bar food but this has one of best chicken wings in the city of San Francisco. I tried their different variety and they all complemented each other. The service here was good and attentive. I look forward to go here again for food and drinks.
google avatar

Alyssa S.

Yelp
Cool bar, fun watching people sing karaoke or watch sports. Bartender was very nice and even though she was very busy still was very friendly

Yelp
Update to the review. Still a dope place to be and meet your neighbors - If you're a real SF-er, you're going to run into a friend here. Or someone one degree of separation from you. They got food back in the kitchen! Current menu is from Hidden Spot, so back to bar foods. Their fried chicken sandwich is amazing - had the extra spicy one and my taste buds were so happy.

Yvette F.

Yelp
Good venue for local live music. Great food. Excellent customer service. The bartender girl is amazing!

Yelp
I came here to watch the Warriors VS Kings game and the vibes were so fun! Everyone seemed to know each other at the bar and it was pretty friendly. The staff behind the counter was friendly and they had quick service despite it being busy. I ordered a draft beer and a cocktail. Both were delicious and the cocktail had a perfect balance of all the flavors! For the kitchen, I ordered the Dino Popcorn Chicken which was a perfect spice. Anything more would've been way too spicy for me. I saw a lot of people order the chicken tenders and wish that I got that too. I will definitely be back and will bring more friends too!!

Yelp
I have a long history w this place. I grew up a block away and my Dad worked here PT from 1970-1997. It was called Alex's Other Place back then. Years later I would go there when it was Pissed off Petes and always had a good time. When it became the Recovery Room, I stopped going because I heard it was a much younger crowd, and I didn't want to feel unwelcome or out of place, and I live in the Mission now. Last Sunday, I decided to check it out, and I was happy to see older people there. I met 2 awesome SF natives at the bar, and the bartender served me right away and was very nice. Everything would have been great, and I would have probably stayed longer, and I probably would have ordered food (the nice people next to me shared their fried shrimp w me, and it was really good). Unfortunately things went south real quick when one of the patrons, ironically a 67 year old woman who was drunk off her ass kept coming over to talk to the couple next to me, each time interrupting our conversation. She was really loud and obnoxious. The 3rd time she came over, the woman I had been talking to told her my dad used to work there, and she starts asking, "Who's ur dad"? "I never knew anybody by that name"! I mentioned a couple of other people from the old days, one person she did know but did not like apparently, calling him an a..hole and so on. Finally, I asked her, "Weren't u sitting way over there"? And then she really went off in me. At in point she actually put her hands on me and pushed me, asking "what are u gonna do now,hit me?" The woman I was talking to tried to calm her down. The bartender came over at one point and said something to her but it was ineffective. Finally one of the younger guys came over and physically led her back to where she had been sitting. I asked if she was regular there and it turns out she the sister of one of the bartenders. I told my new friends that I would probably never go back there again knowing that there's a possibility that I would encounter that that person again. I'm leaving 3 stars though because I had a really nice experience until "Baby Jane" came over and ruined it. I wish that someone would hv intervened and asked her to leave, but no one did. Seemed liked peoole were too intimidated. I hope that someone from RR will read this and maybe tell that woman or her sister the bartender that they lost a good customer because she couldn't hold her liquor or respect other people's space. Luckily, I have fond memories of this bar, but my last experience was the worst experience that I've personally had at any bar all because someone had to get too drunk and act a fool.

Yelp
Im always craving for excellent bar food in the neighborhood. So I was static when I found out Recovery Room started open early and serving lunch. I went in and was greeted immediately by Evelyn and gave a warm welcome. Nice comfortable place and not too crowded since it was early. Sat at one end of the bar and at opposite end were other customers who seem to be regulars. I ordered a beer and Evelyn started a tab instead of charging me immediately, like other places. I end up ordering a classic hamburger from the menu and a side order of fries. Best hamburger and fries I had I a while. Other customer came in and sat next to me. They ordered chicken wings and told me that they were excellent and recommended other hamburgers from the menu. Overall, I will go back and try other items. Hopefully Evelyn will be there. Great service and ambience.

Yelp
Had a good time over here and the food was very good. No lie, their chicken sandwich was probably the biggest that I've seen. Good food and cool atmosphere, no complaints whatsoever.

Yelp
We moved to the neighborhood five years ago and started coming to this local dive bar three years ago when it was called DOCTORS OFFICE. It changed soon after to RECOVERY ROOM and with the change there seems to have arrived a new chef who serves the most incredible hamburgers and fries. We split the quarter pound smash burger every time and the fries come hot and crispy. The burger is just $9 and continues to be our favorite burger in the city for its flavor and price. It has bacon and cheese in addition to the usual suspects, and we think about the burger often when we are having dinner at home. Soleil Ho, why didn't you include the Smash Burger on your best burgers list? Maybe it's better you didn't, so we can continue to have our favorite burger without waiting for an hour in a quiet bar with just a handful of people.

Gregory F.

Yelp
You can't beat a neighborhood pub! Recovery Room has an old wood bar running the length of the room, the old school mirrors behind the liquor shelves on the back of the bar and a proper mix of people that appreciate a much needed drink after a hard day or that friendly pint while catching up with your friends make it an easy place to pull up a stool. Add the friendly staff bartending and it's an win win situation! Just when you thought it couldn't be better, The Hidden Spot has a collaboration so there's a window in back which has a good food menu that serves up snacks and tasty sandwiches and an awesome burger when you're in the mood!
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
FYI: THEY DON'T SERVE FOOD ANYMORE. The bartender said it's been a while since they stopped. They just have some chips behind the bar you could buy. With that said, it's a chill place to have a drink and chat with friends. Nothing fancy..just a solid neighborhood spot to meet up. The bartender was by herself taking care of everybody (about 12 people including my friend and I). My advice: don't go here acting like a snooty, privileged jerk complaining that you didn't even get greeted at the door. Otherwise, I got the sense that the regulars at the bar will be more than happy to do the dirty work of "escorting" you out. Just be patient and order your drinks when you can. It's simple: if you choose to come here, you're supporting a small business. Enjoy your drink and time with friends. Then say thanks on the way out and appreciate the people trying to make a living.

Yelp
Solid neighborhood bar, my dad used to go here occasionally when it was still pissed off Pete's. The night I went happened to be karaoke night and even though I don't/didn't sing it was a great time with friends. Pretty good selection on everything and anything you would want and need. They have a kitchen but I wasn't able to order as I got there after they closed.

Yelp
Local neighbor pub with surprisingly pretty good food, chill atmosphere and tv for watching games. MAY2020: Haven't been here in over a year! They have indoor and outdoor seating! We came here recently to watch the Warriors v Lakers game outside. I got a blue moon $6. They have a giant tv facing their outdoor seating area for game nights which was nice, since their indoor seatings were full. We were able to order drinks from their outdoor seating area. The only con was that it was a windy night and there's no heaters, but just dress warm if you plan on sitting outside. The workers are nice and kept checking in on us to make sure we were good with drinks.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Excelsior District. Definitely a place I enjoy going to once in a while to unwind and get a drink. The food varies since they host different chefs to serve food. All of the ones I've tried were pretty good. But this is just one man's opinion. Music is played from the jukebox so you can pretty much connect to it through an app and make music selections that way. There is one pool table in the back so that's always a plus. And karaoke Sundays I mean... it's got all the makings of a great bar. Definitely check it out if you're on that's side of town!
google avatar

Yelp
Great bar to chill and have a drink. Listen to live bands, karaoke or whatever they have going on for the night. Never a dull moment with RR. Hidden Spot is in here too!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Fun place to visit and spend time with some of the locals. I had a fun girls night out and somehow stumbled upon this little gem of a place. Luckily it was karaoke night so I was very entertained and the staff and business owner is very friendly!

Myles M.

Yelp
I left my back pack on Saturday August 5. I called the bartener the next morning , an asked the Bartender if she saw my green backpack. She said she had it. I said great, and I would come by to pick it up in the afternoon . When got their they could not find it. This not a trust worthy establishment. It was worth $67. Don't go to this bar. THE BARTENDER NAME IS EMILY.

FV B.

Yelp
Awesome, simply got to be one of best burgers ever! Oh yeah, Recovery Room bar delivered beautiful libations to match the burger. No regrets!

j T.

Yelp
I love coming to recovery room, always feels like home. Their service is always friendly and welcoming 20/10 always and their selection of liquor is quiet wonderful. I have yet to try their food but it sure smelled delicious! Bar tenders are also very knowledgeable of unique cocktails!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Super unsuspecting neighborhood bar with all the liquors and beers your heart desires! Even enough different beers and ciders on tap to make a few variations of my fav snakebite (cider + stout). Shout out to the awesome bartender that had me try to delish mango beer on tap, and convinced me to try his "Bruised Mango" drink (mango beer + Guinness). Everything I wanted and more woot woot I'll have to come back another time to try some of the small bites. Saw some Mac n cheese and truffle situations. Next time. Space is huge for big parties. Plenty of TVs along the bar to catch your fav games. 5 stars
google avatar

Yelp
Great local hood spot! Wanna chill have a stiff drink- perfect! Totally can bring in you own outside food so you can have your desired vibe. Keeper for the Outer Mission area.. come and support!

Sam G.

Yelp
Cool lil spot. The food was BOMB. The service was good, very friendly and quick. We enjoyed the music. Overall we had a great time.
google avatar

Sam K.

Yelp
Great addition to the Excelsior district. As a local to the area, Recovery Room screams old~school and divey with a lot of San Francisco soul and culture. Great booze and an underrated kitchen to boot as well. (Peep the food pics) Giang and company really take care of their folks here. If you're into sports, drinks, and a good time, Recovery Room takes care of all that.
google avatar

Ed S.

Yelp
The neighborhood watering hole! Great people and great times! Local spot with all you need to drink and a very good bar bites menu
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Decent sports bar. Seven or eight flat screens. Food available. No Bud light on tap. Decent service. Mixed crowd. Hip hop on the speakers.
google avatar

Saminda W.

Yelp
Underwhelming. The food, service, and drinks were all pretty bland and mediocre. We had the nachos and wings. The meat on the nachos was bland and it was short of key toppings, most notably cheese and guac. The wings were decent but just barely made up for the lackluster nachos. Our beers were fine but took forever to pour, and we were 2 of 5 people there. I'd pass unless you're starving and thirsty and don't want to walk another block.
google avatar

Danny C.

Yelp
The revamp of this place has really cranked up turnout. RIP, POP. Welcome, RR. While food may take a while and be quite expensive, drinks are still plenty cheap, and there might even be more TVs than before. The layout with the long bar and several tables hasn't changed, and the live DJ pit still exists too. Pretty happy that this place has upped its game and integrated several features. Also happy that vets of the Sunset are bartending several nights.
google avatar

Wilton C.

Yelp
I'm gonna call it. This place will be one of the top 3 bars of Excelsior district. Dive bar at its divest. Great place for the everyday hang out with reminiscent hits from the 90's and hits of today playing in the background. Friendly owners and staff. The jerk tacos 3 for 10 is literally bang for your buck. Each one well crafted with ample amounts or shredded pork shoulder, marinated with the perfect amount of pineapple slaw, and topped with an ever so sized jalapeño by chef Lawrence or Larry. The atmosphere is kind and humbly represents the neighborhood I call home. You want to go to a dive bar in Excelsior with me? This is the place.
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
I really liked the name pissed off pete's but real talk this is basically the same bar and that's a good thing because it's just a solid neighborhood bar. My buddy lives across the street so it's kind of a no brainer when we're at his place. I think this'd be a good place to catch a game too if the dubs could just get their act together.
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
Enjoy this place . I have been here 3 times already . 6 television's a pool table in the back room , they have a pay to play jukebox the service is amazing , they have great choice of food . Especially there wings.. I can't get enough.
google avatar

Yelp
When I heard there was a new bar in town I decided to check it out. I love dive bars but its hard to call it a dive bar because its very spacious inside. Of course the drinks are great but how is the food. You would think bar food and you would be right. sort of. A burger sounds like bar food. And so do Nachos. Try ordering them though and you wont be disappointed. Crab Cakes aren't bad either. Yes that's correct. They have Crab Cakes and they are phenomenal. The menu does change so there is always something new for your taste buds to try. The atmosphere is top notch. You can see that there are regulars from the days before recovery room opened mixed in with many new regulars that have made Recovery Room home. I have gone several times now and I always feel welcome. I feel like I have been going there for years. If you are in the city definitely check this place out.
google avatar

Yelp
My a husband and I have been coming here with our friends forever and a day. It was called Alexis... In fact we met thereover 15 years ago. Before that I had been going there about 10 yrs prior. The ownership was bout out by "Pete" and the name was changed to "PISSED OFF PETES" Now it's is called "THE RECOVERY ROOM"... Great place... good stiff drinks.,. And the bar food is amazing! The new chef does an outstanding job!
google avatar

Lawrence L.

Yelp
Great new addition to a stretch of mission that often gets forgotten! Amazing selection of alcohol, although I only drink tequila haha but still great atmosphere and many TVs and a pool table out back and even a jukebox! Karaoke, pop up chefs serving amazing food Whether it's for a game on the tube, hanging out with buddies or just to grab a drink... Def worth checking out if you in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Abraham L.

Yelp
Don't allow dogs. Don't bring your dog. Because dogs are "dirty" not like drunk men who pee everywhere.
google avatar

Pampam W.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, drinks and bartenders with bar bites. Happy hour Monday thru Friday.... $5 shots! Love it at recovery. I look forward to seeing the hot bartender named Emily every time.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Great dive bar in the Mission to catch a game at. Unlike the previous bar that was here, they finally have a kitchen with some dignity and a billiards room that doesn't smell like dead pigeons. Caught a few NBA games here, drank enough to offend Homer Simpson and still had enough money to put my dog through private school. Long review short, it's a clean bar that serves great food with lots of space for you and your drunk friends. You'll have a good time.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome! Spot... new owners figuring out the menu from the korean burger, sunset burger, tri-tip sandwhich, wings, fish and chips... ALL ON POINT! ST8 GRUBBIN & DRINKIN... MUST TRY

Yelp
The hospitality Jay and Daniella extended was definitely appreciated, been comin to this spot since 2012..... Native Ownership keeps the hood ours!!!

Yelp
Be careful I came in one day for a drink and the bartender was quite the charmer, now I'm his Fiancé.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to relax out after work and have a drink. You come to recover from the tough day at the office you just had. Friendly people, great service, cool bartenders. There's a pool table in the back and always good music on. They serve food till 10pm as well! Come by and have a good time. Jay and his coworkers will take good care of you.
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night. The food was very good. The service was even better. Everything was clean and it smelled clean (unlike other dive bars in the area). Good selection of alcohol and everything was reasonably priced. Its a very chill vibe. I would come back.

Ashley F.

Yelp
The best bartender ever! This place has great vibes We had 2 Long Island iced teas each and they were great! You need to try this place
google avatar

Yelp
Got to meet the owner Jay and he was very friendly. This place has a friendly vibe. Was talking to some of the customers as well. Saw a pool table in the back and will be back to try the food.
google avatar

raquel t.

Yelp
What can I say..... Jay the owner and staff are amazing! Very accommodating! Great service! Great neighborhood bar vibe! Had my birthday party here and everyone was very accommodating! I wanted to support a bar in my neighborhood and this was definitely a great choice!
google avatar

Marc T.

Yelp
I've been here pretty much every Warriors playoff game and the crowd has been on point with locals having great energy. I also enjoy the limited kitchen. Great eats for a dive bar. The two owners have been very welcoming and introducing and getting to know the regulars that were coming into the old spot before. Its great to support SF natives on a business venture together. Love this spot and will continue to come. Continue to keep up the good work.
google avatar

G L.

Yelp
A great bar where the locals come drink, eat, watch sports, and play pool. Bartenders are friendly and know how to pour you one. The food here is amazing and mouth watering. And did I mention karaoke on Thursday nights? Ample room to fit big groups and enough bar room to play a couple rounds of liars dice too. Plenty of parking outside and great Mexican restaurants nearby.

Yelp
I went here on Sunday March 10, 2019 5:25pm'sh. I saw on facebook that street food dojo is now serving food(free appetizers on soft opening), warriors basketball game, and karaoke, so yes it did attract my attention. I had a heinenken, pacific, corona, $5 each. The apps I had was buffalo wings, waffle fries, noodles(I think it's with sesame oil/garlic), cheese, and roti(?), and boiled peanuts. The wings/noodles were very good. I ordered my drinks from two bartenders(I think his name is Jay or Giang and also one female), both were cordial. The karaoke was hosted by Gerald (I knew him before when the bar was called pissed off pete's) and his girlfriend was there also(haven't seen them in about 2 years). The kj does have ample supply of song and a good sound system. The stage was there from before when it was p.o.p.'s. My friends joined me around 9:30pm'sh, so yes that is more enjoyable of course. I bought my friend a long island $10 and afterwards he ordered me a guiness(yes it's fresh, not stale). This bar has karaoke every other sunday.
