The Best Coffee Shops in Ottawa and Gatineau | Eater Montreal

"Red Door Provisions recently opened up its bright space in Beechwood Village, which means more room to enjoy their new slow bar and hang out with a coffee and one of their signature grilled cheese sandwiches or vegan pop tarts. The “provisions” in their name refers to preserves and jams made in-house. Classes for these, as well as home brewing, should start up in fall 2019." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

They always have at least one vegetarian option for their grill cheese sandwhiches which is a perfect lunch. Some good coffee and teas and the cookies and pasteries are hard to resist. The place gets busy at lunchtime so its nice to sit on the front or back patio outside.

I’m a huge fan of red door provisions. I don’t go as often as I should, but whenever I do, I love to get their seasonal drinks. This summer season, I went on a matcha date with one of my friends and we each got two seasonal matcha drinks. One was a butterfly pea tea base with matcha while the other was a lavender honey matcha. Both tasted amazing. Good quality matcha and good mix of bases. I love their classic menu items as well. Coffee or tea are both great options here. If you’re ordering food too, their grilled cheese sandwiches are delicious. Buttery, crispy and flavourful. Don’t even get me started on their baked goodies - I’ve tried nearly everything, but I gravitate towards their cookies and assorted pastries like croissants and turnovers! Definitely a must visit spot if you’re in the area or looking for a cute and quaint coffee spot to sit and chat in!

I only come here 1 or 2 times a year because I don't live in the area, but this is my first choice. The service is welcoming and the staff really care. I had the breakfast sandwich (vegetarian today) and a brewed coffee. Although the establishment apoears small, there is ample seating is available. In previous visits, I have had their grilled cheese sandwiches that are excellent.

Google
This cute little café was a nice surprise. Tucked away in Beechwood the vegan chocolate square was delicious. I also had a laté with almond milk and it was fantastic. Will rerun for sure. The space inside is small so I could not eat in.

Google
It's been a while since I've come across a coffee shop that has it all; excellent service, great food, perfect coffee, and a very nice, clean, and simple vibe. It was my first time here and definitely won't be my last. Our barista Dona was also incredibly nice and funny. She knew my father and I were sharing a Beechwood Grilled Cheese sandwich, which was excellent by the way, and pre cut and served it on two separate plates without being asked to. It was very refreshing to experience good quality and friendly service like that. Thank you for a lovely time.

Google
The Coffee Shop offers a cozy atmosphere filled with the scent of freshly baked bread and rich coffee. The walls feature unique illustrations, and the menu includes specialty lattes like mango coconut foam and mint orange foam. Enjoy homemade jam sandwiches, delicate desserts, and take-home snacks or soups. A perfect spot to unwind.

Google
A super cute little shop for sweet treats, great coffee, hot sandwiches, and some cool local beers and items. We had a chocolate croissant and it definitely wasn’t the most flaky fresh pastry, but hit the spot. Sandwiches are definitely made with tender loving care and amazing ingredients (so much yummy cheese), but the bread was so crusty and toasted that it actually hurt my palate to eat. I know the bread is excellent quality but it’s a bit hard to enjoy if it’s cutting up your mouth. Still delicious though!

Google
Really nice place to have some coffee. This is an old house turned to coffee place and is one place I love to go. The indoor decor is very pleasing for a morning coffee. I always take the mocha from here and I love it. The staffs are really friendly and great. They have only a small pace for parking at the back which is mostly take so that one thing I would say is the down side. The street at the side has parking but mostly filled too.

Yelp
I don't know how come this place gets many good reviews but every time I come there, the quality of food and service is very poor. A few times I bought the pastries there, and it was stale and not fresh. Today I asked the staff when the pastries on display were made, and they seemed to be confused at first, and then they had to admit that the pastries weren't prepared today. I ended up not buying them at all to not the risk of eating spoiled food. They told me that they also have fresh ones but why do they charge fresh and stale pastry for the same price then?! The drinks are mediocre. For instance, they charge almost 8 dollars for a small seasonal drink. It's not even good at all, as if tasteless. The overall atmosphere isn't welcoming due to the constant smell of burning, unfriendly stuff, and some of the kitchenware seems to be not cleaned well, for instance, the toaster, there is a lot of soot on it that constantly burns. The stuff isn't suitable for working in hospitality. They seem to not be interested in what they're doing, and that's why they do it badly and don't put much effort. That is what happens when the owner hires students for whom working in a cafe isn't a profession but just a side hassle. Also, their appearance wasn't nice. By saying that I mean their clothes didn't look neat and tidy, and their hair was uncombed and loose. To sum up, Red Door Provisions is just another overrated cafe that might make an impression of a cute and cozy place with delicious drinks and pastries at first but it turns out to be even worse than mediocre. I gave it a few chances to improve my impression of it but I'll not come back there anymore, and I recommend others to avoid it as well.

Yelp
LOVELY LOVELY! The staff is kind and answered all my questions. The food was lovely and they have vegan sandwich options which is fun. They do a lot of grilled cheeses and baked goods. They also carry provisions so you can take home some exotic goodies for later. They also have some alcoholic beverages that are local (cider!). I had coffee and pastries both times I visited and they were amazing each time. I loved sitting on their front patio but the back patio also looks lovely. I will be back. Parking was the only challenge, but I was less than a block away. I will be back!

Yelp
I'll have one if everything, something you'll definitely be saying after see the select. From giant cookies to Easter inspired desserts to pickled jalapeños and even dill ketchup this place has something for everyone. Even a cute patio. Best part he menu says no mods Will definitely become a regular after experiencing this spot

Yelp
Ehhhhhh I was super excited to try this place but I found it underwhelming. The brownie and whoopie cookie were overpoweringly sweet. The spinach galette was plain with barely any flavour. All their items look delicious but the flavour did not follow through.

Yelp
I have been a few times to the red door and I love how cozy and welcoming the place is . I'm not a coffee drinker however I always go for their delicious sandwiches. I always get it to go , so I rarely eat there but for what I can see many people go to study/work and is a very calm environment. My favourite one was the brie, turkey and pear sandwich. So tasteful, and different. I would say the only thing is that their prices are a bit high, so just be aware that you may be out with a bill a bit higher than expected .
google avatar

Hadia G.

Yelp
I love their coffee.. usually they have lots of treats and they can make you sandwiches per order.. I came in the afternoon on a Sunday most of their sandwiches were sold out so I settled for just a coffee. They also now post pandemic have a lot of their treats frozen and ready to enjoy at home
google avatar

Yelp
We love this little tiny joint - holds about 15 seated guests, has cute decor and a great grilled cheese sandwich menu - about 10 options. Staff are super helpful and look like they enjoy working there and together, which I always love seeing. Pro hint: ask them which sandwhiches are most popular and which is there favorite - pick from those choices. Lots of well cared for plants. (OK - pet peeve of mine - why do businesses leave poorly cared for plants in their windows - it looks shoddy! So kudos to these guys for their well tended beautiful plants that actually enhance the space. Thank you!) Would I return: Yes - I have several other grilled cheese options to try out Would I recommend: Yes

Yelp
Simply the best. For my brother and his wife this place has become a second home and I can see why.

Yelp
I LOVED it here! I came on a Saturday during the day, since they usually close early on weekdays (6pm). The inside is super cozy, although small. They have lots of hanging plants, and decorations, and their homemade products. I got a vanilla matcha latte, which was perfectly sweet and indulgent, as well as a cranberry coconut bar (so decadent)! And a beer. They had quite the variety of beer! It was super hard to decide on a treat, since they have LOTS of amazing looking baked goods, AND savoury items (which I'll have to try next time). The service is really friendly, and you can tell the guys have fun working there, which I appreciate. It was really cozy to sit on the high tables and look out onto the street. Definitely coming back, I need to try their other sweet/savoury treats! I only wish they were downtown since I have to come to Beechwood for them, but worth!

Yelp
Their iced americano was very delicious! However their lemon loaf was extremely dry. Needed a drink to get it down. Really cute atmosphere and friendly staff. Definitely a spot off the beaten path.
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee and better than average food. A bit cramped. Lots of pastries, grilled cheese a bit too greasy, soup a bit too spicy. No internet, or really really sucky internet that cuts out. What is this, dark ages? Overall a 4.5 star place that doesn't quite make it there.
google avatar

Ann D.

Yelp
Well I just stopped for a quiet cappuccino and decixed to try the Spinach & Feta puff pastry. It was superb. Very pleasant guy behind the counter.. William is delightful and truly brings a passion for serving others. What a beautiful start to my day. Merci

Yelp
As with most coffee shops the overall experience is shared between ambiance and the drink quality. The interior seemed cute and clean and service was nice and polite. The outside patio is not very large and the furniture feels a bit cheap. However it's still a great place to sit and enjoy a sunny afternoon. I ordered a cappuccino since it's what I usually drink outside. They know how to make it look appealing for sure but it was a bit too weak for my liking. They also sell coffee from different roasters including one all the way from Calgary. I think their selection of drinks was very good in general and prices are decent enough.

Yelp
This is one of Ottawa's BEST little gems! There is something for everyone and everything is great. From their amazing jams, marmalades and pickled beets to their most delicious coffee, lattes, lemonades, iced teas and food - where to start? Grilled cheese, several different types including peanut butter, Nutella, banana and goat cheese - sounds odd, but is AMAZiNG! Delicious salads, soups and various breakfast options and so many pastry, cookies, and such to choose from, including ice cream sandwiches to die for. I can't praise this place enough, it's so good! And the staff are friendly, nice and attentive. And the place itself is sweet and clean - lots of nice things to look at, as well, a sizeable nice patio, for nice days. I hope it's around for years to come.......oh, and always, very cool music and atmosphere!

Yelp
This is probably one of my favourite coffee shops in Ottawa. They're always using great coffee beans. The staff know how to make great espresso based drinks. Food is good, sandwiches range from basic to fancy grilled cheese (good options for kids + those who are more discerning). Nice selection of baked goods, some staples and some on rotation/experimental basis. I recommend the sticky buns. Recommended.

Yelp
Decided to stop by this cute little place for breakfast one day. It was incredible, from food to coffee I was treated to delicious tastes and friendly service. I went for one of their breakfast sandwiches which had a beautiful cooked egg complimented with tomato jam. My girlfriend had a scone which was crispy on the outside but fluffy inside. The coffee had a delightful nutty after taste. I can't wait to go back and try their toasted cheese sandwiches!
google avatar

Vero D.

Yelp
Nice little coffee shop. Great atmosphere, small and quaint! It does fill up easily and fast on weekends! Great coffees and I hear the buttermilk scone and sandwiches are delicious. Also had one of the salad which was very good. Great spot to sit and read or study. Nice new independent coffee shop in the area. Recently licensed! Beware it does close early!

Yelp
So COVID or not when restos are open or coffees are open, it would be a plus to also offer bathroom services. I will be transparent and say I won't buy until that is a given also. There are no excuses- hands are cleaner with wash and soap than Purell. Second thing is - the burrito was unsatisfying (long to cook but still wet in the end!), have the staff be more flexible when rules of staying inside are so strict, they can let people wait outside and one can serve. The espresso shot was not an espresso, you need to either fix the machine or change the beans, it was awfully bitter, no foam and not at all dark, it was just plain burnt coffee (with a hard burnt taste in the end). I am avid espresso person and I would chose coffee planet any day over this business.

Yelp
This place is soooo great! My bf and I just moved from Toronto and we greatly missed pilot coffee and cute little cozy cafés ... We were so psyched when we found the Red Door and realized that they carry Pilot coffee beans aka the best coffee roasters ever. The staff were all so friendly and the selection of food and sweets (including SuzieQ donuts!!!) was awesome! I had the overnight oats which are served in a cute little mason jar. It's made with almond milk and yogurt and served with grapes. It was so nice and flavourful! My bf had the smoked ham breakfast sandwich and he loved it. We'll definitely be back. It's easy to find and lots of street parking. Go there asap!!
google avatar

Andrea Z.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, however, do you remember that molasses spill in Boston that killed all those horses? The coffee tastes like it took those remains and cold brewed them.
google avatar

Breanne W.

Yelp
Finally got to check out this place after drooling over their homemade pop tarts on Instagram and it did not disappoint! Went for lunch on a whim with a friend and everything was amazing and the staff was very friendly and helpful in our indecisiveness. I had a St. Zotique and ahh it was sooo good! I also had a niagara peach soda so fresh and tasty! I got a pop tart to take home and had a maple whoopie pie for dessert and it was very good! Definitely worth a visit here, it may seem small and a little cramped but it's worth it. Everything was fresh and really good!
google avatar

Yelp
What a treat for lunch on Beechwood. Stopped in and ordered a Grilled cheese and soup to go. The St. Zotique ( Aged Cheddar/Calabrese Salami/Honey-Sriracha Roasted Tomato/St. Albert Cheese Curd ) had a wonderful crunch texture and the gooey cheese in combination with the spicy Salami and tomatoes were excellent. The days soup was an African inspired vegetable with Butternut squash, Kale, Carrots, Onion and Celery. It contained aromatic spices and ground peanuts to give it some real warmth and character. The soup was also very good. I have heard that there coffee is excellent so will return with Coffee and Pastries on my mind. The interior is very crisp and white. The seating is on the cosy side but when the spring/summer weather returns they have a nice patio.

Tbay R.

Yelp
Stay away today. Staff super rude and rushed despite zero customers in store. Attitude adjustment required. Didn't even acknowledge tip on order totalling 40 bucks. Man...

An P.

Yelp
Red Door Provisions has the best coffee in Ottawa and some of the most inventive food as well. Where most of Ottawa's cafes are cookie cut, this is a refreshing and original spot.
google avatar

Marcelle P.

Yelp
Stopped in on Saturday, for the first time, and had a Beechwood Fog and slice of lemon loaf. The experience was so good that I met friends there on Sunday: a kale and quinoa salad was enjoyed, a grilled cheese with soup was savoured, and a sales chocolate cookie was devoured! The service is personable and friendly. I can't wait to go back and would suggest making a trip to have their Beechwood Fog.
google avatar

Gavin F.

Yelp
The most delicious London Fog, highly recommend. A little tiny on the inside which is the one drawback.

Erica E.

Yelp
This place is the best. They have an amazing, rotating coffee menu; an incredible assortment of baked goods; and they provide a great atmosphere with their cozy seating areas and friendly service.
google avatar

Amelie M.

Yelp
The red door is a good place to get a snack. I find the service somewhat friendly. I find the portion size a bit small when it comes to the soup. They give a half filled bowl. Since the soup is generally a vegetarian option I would like a nice portion for it to be filling

Gabriela B.

Yelp
Love their pop tarts and grilled cheese sandwiches. Great food spot, unfortunately crappy service. Lady with bangs at the front not pleasant nor friendly...if it weren't for this I'd give it a 5 star for sure!
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
Great place to have lunch or an afternoon snack. The sandwich/soup combo is a great deal and their house sodas or very refreshing. Try one of their cookies or scones for a treat.

Madeline M.

Yelp
I can't say enough nice things about Red Door Provisions; the first time I walked in, I was thrilled to see a La Marzocco espresso machine, in the right hands, these handmade espresso machines create some seriously exceptional espresso. Following the lead of the ownership team, the the staff at Red Door Provisions put a lot of care into making delicious, quality drinks, light meals and baked treats. If you're not a coffee drinker, their sodas are all flavoured with syrups made in-house that perfectly complement the rest of the menu. My favourite sandwich is the St. Zotique. The sandwich menu rotates from time to time so if you've eaten your way through it, there is still lots of opportunity for variety. Don't miss a chance to stop in here if you're hungry, it's absolutely worth it!
google avatar

Victoria P.

Yelp
First visit and I'll be back! It's like these guys have been here for years and that's a good thing in that they've got great service and are laid back. First bite into the Athena sandwich sold me. Tasty sandwich! Good variety of loose leaf teas and will be back to try the coffee. Glad to have the option to eat in. Nice atmosphere. Welcome to the neighbourhood!
google avatar

Sandra K.

Yelp
We finally got a chance to try the Red Door for lunch & we were not disappointed. We shared two grilled cheese sandwiches (one veggie, one meat), soup & a salad. Everything was exceptionally tasty. Washed down with glasses of the housemade sodas (yummy) made for a great experience. We will be back.

AJ C.

Yelp
I've been to Red Door twice now, days 74 and 99. Both times were excellent. Service was great, food was very tasty (dessert squares the first visit and a sandwich the second visit) and I'm a big fan of their London Fog. I was also a big fan of the music being played. This has now become my favourite place on Beechwood. I'll be back. I just hope there is space as its reputation grows.
google avatar

Heather T.

Yelp
Stopped in yesterday for the first time (their 129th day open, and only second tuesday open), and was very impressed! Great service, delicious lattes and tons of yummy treats to decide from. I went with an everything cookie but would like to go back to try one of their grilled cheeses. Overall great experience and I'll definitely be back!

Ray F.

Yelp
I had the good fortune to stumble across Red Door Provisions on the morning they opened, and I look forward to going back in order to work my way through their menu. My choice that day was one of their grilled cheese sandwiches, which featured their own tomato jam. Thoroughly enjoyed it, as well as a lovely latte. One of the most impressive features for me was their kitchen. This is no restaurant kitchen, but rather a proper home kitchen (albeit a fancier one than I will ever have). It struck me as a testament to their pride in providing quality offerings. Excellent addition to the neighbourhood!
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
This is exactly what Beechwood needs. A cool, relaxing place that serves great coffee and delicious food. I've been waiting for something like this to open around here.

Tom T.

Yelp
went for the first time this week - always heard good things about them - what an experience - super friendly staff and very knowledgeable about the products. Had one of their stuffed grill cheese sandwiches - it was to die for - coffee was very good they do not do free refills - definitely will be going back to work my way thru their selection of sandwiches. I hear the sweets are great and they look that way - will be trying them in the future.
google avatar

Natalie B.

Yelp
Very happy with my new neighbours: excellent coffee and scones, "to die for" grilled cheese sandwiches and lovely lovely hosts! Welcome to Beechwood Village!

Rebecca D.

Yelp
I wish I could give Red Door 10 Stars. I love having this in my neighborhood. It's the perfect place to head to for some quiet time with my book and a tea. It's the best spot for a great coffee and sweet treat. It's also home to the most sensational selection of grilled cheeses (St.Zotique and Dad Bod are my personal faves!). Doesn't matter the time of day or day of the week, whatever I'm needing, Red door is always the answer - even if that's a glass of wine on my way home on a Friday evening (sunny patio?? yes!!). The staff are lovely, and make everyone feel at home. I never want to move out of this neighborhood because I can't imagine life without Red Door!!
google avatar

Bernie H.

Yelp
Most excellent grilled cheese sandwiches. My Friday go to spot for lunch. They also make great soda. Check it out.

A M.

Yelp
Such a charming little place. Great selection of treats, including several gluten-free options. Glad to have them in the neighbourhood.
