"This hybrid venue offers coffee by day, and turns into a laid-back lounge-y bar in the evenings, complete with live music and DJs. Bites include shakshouka and goat cheese-topped flatbread and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. Don’t skip on the draft cocktails, like the Thai Me Down, made with bourbon, nitro Thai tea, and bitters." - Brittanie Shey

"Red Dwarf, a new coffee shop, bar and arts and music venue, is opening in the spot formerly occupied by beloved Midtown hangout Mongoose Versus Cobra. Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission records indicate that the new spot, located at 1011 McGowen Street, received a late night mixed beverage permit last week. According to the bar’s Instagram account, Red Dwarf’s debut, which was originally scheduled for July 1, was postponed several times due to the coronavirus pandemic. The bar plans to offer to-go cocktails and small bites starting on August 1, with a more formal opening is scheduled for later this year. The venue is a collaboration between Sarina Pasha, co-owner of Black Hole Coffee, who will run the coffee program; James Koby Boren, who will oversee bar operations; and Sarnia’s brother Shan Pasha; booking manager, according to Houston Food Finder. The trio took over the spot from 13 Celsius co-owner Mike Sammons, who opened Mongoose Vs Cobra in 2012 as a craft cocktail- and beer-focused bar. The building, which was built in 1915, was originally a grocery store but sat vacant for several decades until Sammons took it over. Red Dwarf will eventually be open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., Shan Pasha told the Houston Press. The idea behind the bar was to create a spot that offered something for everyone, from coffee lovers to art aficionados to music fans, he told the paper. In addition to craft beer and fair trade coffee, Red Dwarf is keeping some of Mongoose Versus Cobra’s more popular cocktails on the menu, and will pair up with chef Grant Keaton to offer breakfast pastries and a full lunch and dinner menu daily. Pasha told The Press he is currently hosting an open call for musicians and artists who want to display their talents at the bar when it eventually opens to the public — Red Dwarf does not plan to charge creatives a booking fee, he said. Houstonians can tune in to Red Dwarf’s Instagram and Facebook for information on future offerings and opening plans." - Brittanie Shey

The Red Dwarf looks cool, there is a large mural in the parking area and the entire outside of the building is encased in vines. The first thing I noticed upon entering the building was the artwork. On the wall to my left was a beautiful art gallery showcasing the work of several local artists. There was a beautiful, large mural on the wall to the right and an interesting art piece above the bar. The bar offered a large variety of draught beers and mixed drinks. They have a nice stage setup for local DJ's, bands, and event's like burlesque shows. I met a friend here for lunch and we got a cheeseburger, quesadilla, and a few coffee infused beers on draught which were all good. This bar is definitely worth checking out.

It was a fantastic experience for a Wednesday afternoon. The bartender was amazing and also in charge of the music selection. She was playing every single song that I love... They have great coffee and the selection of spirits is quite good as well. I look forward to going back soon... preferably on Mondays since you can bring your vinyls and spin some tunes!!! Great place altogether!

Great place with great vibe. Conveniently located near a rail stop. Yummy food. Opens early for serious coffee (try the cold brew on a hot summer morning!) and stays open late with interesting music and customers. Has a relaxed vibe but gets exciting during live shows - at least back when people were allowed to gather for live shows. A must-visit if you can walk or bike to it, and also worth a train ride or driving from across town given their safe, convenient, free parking.

Very beautiful artwork inside this fine establishment. The bartender was really chill, and the drinks were amazing! Love their house specialty drinks. Price is very much worth it. The dj set, that was playing, had a great music selection for a slow monday night.

Great local bar+venue from some of Houston’s most lovely people. Great atmosphere, great drinks, and one of the best burgers in Houston (which is saying something for such a burger-loving city). They’re doing a really good job with the difficult task of providing a safe, clean space to enjoy a drink even in these times (remember drinks in public?). Highly recommend everyone come out and support these great folks! Houston desperately needs a space like Red Dwarf, especially when shows are allowed again (hopefully next year). It’ll easily be the best venue going (RIP Walter’s) with an amazing space, real DIY spirit, and a clear love for Houstons music scene that you just don’t get anywhere else.

Very cool vibe, 9th wonder was mixing on the Wednesday night i went. Houston themed drinks that taste as good as they sound. The Korean noodle bowl is definitely in my list to try next time. A lot of well spaced 4 tops with surfaces being disinfected between patrons and staff wearing masks. Cash and card accepted

People are nice, shows are punctual, space is really cool! But the volume was brain-blowingly loud - yes even for a live show - yes even with earplugs in! I had to leave! Please be merciful on those of us who are still readjusting from pandemic life... Society is collectively going deaf and I don't think perpetuating that cycle is a good thing 🙉
