3 Best Day Trips From Vancouver | Condé Nast Traveler

"Red Fish Blue Fish, a casual harborside institution built out of shipping containers, serves up superlative fish and chips, chowder, and fish tacos using only sustainable seafood. It’s always busy, always noisy, and always worth the (always lengthy) wait. Though there are three kinds of fish and chips (plus tempura-battered oysters and chips), go for the classic halibut—you won’t regret it. The wild salmon tacone, stuffed inside a flour tortilla with coleslaw, pea shoots, and lemon-pickled onions, is also fabulous. And the chowder, chock full of Pacific white fish, comes with a chipotle-coconut kick." - Liz Humphreys

1st visit: Very good food, especially the fries. Large portions. Very limited outside seating, always a line to order. 2nd visit: not as good. Stood in line for more than 40 minutes. At one point, they stopped taking orders due to a need to catch up. The food was good, as usual. The salmon sandwich was quite good, and not as wet as the first time. I didn't care for the seafood chowder, since it contained tomatoes; however, my wife liked it. As with the other visit, the battered halibut and fries were very good.

Absolutely worth the wait! Best seafood in Victoria. We had heard great things about Red Fish Blue Fish, and when we arrived, the long line said it all — but let me tell you, it was totally worth the 20–30 minute wait. We ordered the BC Halibut, Tempura Cod Taco, and a Salad — and every single item blew us away. 🔹 The BC Halibut was unbelievably delicious — honestly, the best fish I’ve ever had. Perfectly cooked, super flavorful, and paired with fantastic fries. 🔹 The Tempura Cod Taco (more like a warm, soft wrap) was packed with flavor and had an amazing texture — crispy yet tender. 🔹 The Salad was a surprising highlight — so fresh, bright, and very tasty, which is rare for a side salad at a seafood shack! We truly loved every bite and really enjoyed our lunch by the harbor. The setting, the food, the vibe — all top-notch. We’re actually planning to come back tomorrow — that’s how good it was. We can’t imagine any other restaurant topping this seafood experience. The halibut is an absolute must. Highly, highly recommended.

Wow—this place is 100% worth the hype! The line was super long, and I waited about 40 minutes, but every minute was worth it. Even though the staff were incredibly busy, they were still so warm and friendly. I got the Pacific Cod combo and added a BC Halibut as a single piece, and wow—the portions were huge! Perfect for sharing between two people. I’ve tried fish and chips at other places before, but this was hands down the best I’ve ever had. And being able to enjoy it right by the beach? Absolutely perfect.

Google
Red Fish Blue Fish – A Victoria Must! If you’re visiting Victoria and love seafood, do not miss Red Fish Blue Fish. This tiny, pierside gem might be easy to overlook, but it serves up some of the best seafood you’ll ever have—truly worth every minute in line. The seafood chowder? Hands down the best on the planet—rich, hearty, and full of flavor. And the fish and chips? Absolutely next level. Lightly tempura-battered, perfectly flaky, and cooked to crispy perfection. I’ve had fish and chips all over, and these are the best I’ve ever tasted. Plan to arrive right at opening if you can—it’s the sweet spot before the crowds swell. Yes, you’ll be standing in line, but trust me, the food is more than worth it.

Google
This is a cute little fish stand, serving delicious tacos. We wait in line for about 20 minutes, put our order in then sat on the stools to enjoy this fresh tacos, and fish and chips. This is a super casual place overlooking the Victoria Bay. We had gone a few nights before and the line was down the block so we chose a different night – it was worth the wait and very enjoyable. The fish and chips were light and crispy, and the fish tacos were delicious. Very reasonably priced at this glorified food truck. Would definitely go back.

Google
Fun little fish place at Victoria harbour with nice views. Very busy place with easily 30 min waits at peak time. Fast service and good food, I thought that the menu was very nice and diverse but the actual tacones (it’s like a wrap) did not really delivered on the flavours which were very subtle. Nonetheless it’s a fun place which I would definitely recommend. Heads up - no washrooms!

Google
Excellent fish & chips. And the grilled salmon was a huge hit for my daughter who doesn’t like fried food. Pickle chips are so good. Loved that there is so much seating on the dock. Long line that moved fast so if you see a line don’t worry you’ll be eating soon.

Finding a place to eat in Victoria on BC Day turned out to be more challenging than we expected.  We were a bit surprised to find that many places were either closed or closing early, which is different from what we're used to in Vancouver. We arrived at Red Fish Blue Fish around 6:30PM and there was huge line-up, estimated time about an hour maybe 90 minutes wait.... the line-up was up the ramp! We decided to come back the next day, but come for lunch instead. We arrived at 1045am, and was not surprised to see a line-up. Even the first person in the line-up was a local as they had already had a portable chair with them! We probably got our food around 1130am, 30 minutes from opening, but it was worth it! We essentially ended up getting the Wild Salmon with the Salad and Albacore Tuna with the Fries (salivating just thinking about it!) from the grill,  the Chipotle Chowder, Jerk Fish Tacones (that was a little messy to share!) and 2 piece Cod with Coleslaw for the kids. We were so impressed by the staff, who were incredibly patient and helpful and even suggested a few different ways from the Grill. All of this was eaten by 3 adults and two kids. By the time we left, we felt so grateful for the excellent food and service that made our trip so special. The food was incredible—every bite was savouring! I kinda wished we had ordered double what we had! For those who want to try it out, come early! Or expect a line-up!

Yelp
Fresh, hot, barely there batter fish and chips with a leafy pickled salad and light slaw with malt vinegar and lemon-dill Cesar dressing? Perfection--no notes! It was a typical PNW drizzle on a Thursday early evening and we finally had room to try this happening place. Service was quick and thoughtful with a variety of choices for such a small place. Umbrellas held up nicely against the rain and the root beer should be called Heinz 57 because they literally threw it all in there. Will be back every time we are here!

Yelp
We were really lucky to have gotten there around sunset on a Sunday and there was no line. I was reading previous reviews and vlogs that said sometimes the line is long. Maybe we went on a good day? It's right on the dock so you can watch the beautiful sun set over the water as you eat your food bar stool style We ordered essentially all their different fish on the fish and chips (wild salmon, BC halibut, pacific cod). Our favorite was the halibut. The fries were well seasoned and crispy. FISH AND CHIPS Tempura battered with tartar sauce, coleslaw and chips BC Halibut Pacific Cod Wild Salmon 1 piece meal $23 $17.50 $17.50 2 piece meal $34 $24 $24 We also ordered the chowder. Very unique and interesting with the coconut milk. Creamy. And there was ample seafood that you are not skimped on contents of soup. Chowder $8.25/cup $11.75 /bowl Chipotle coconut, sweet corn, pacific white fish confit, green onions

Yelp
I came here on the recommendation of a coworker. The line was long on a weekday, and we waited about 30 minutes in line to get our order placed. Seating is limited and could be better. However, we made it work with our order of 3 pieces of halibut and chips, a bowl of chowder and a fountain drink. One sticking point we did not understand was that any order with 1-3 pieces of fish only included only one order of tartar sauce and another side of sauce would be an extra charge. I know the extra sauce did not cost that much, but after spending almost $70 for this meal. The sauce situation sort of dampened the experience. Some people really like their tartar sauce on their fish and I think 3 pieces of fish should have a bit more tartar sauce than 1 piece of fish. The fish was nicely fried and lightly battered. Is it the best fish and chips I have eaten? I would say no when compared to Lower Mainland options. However, it was a tasty option in the area and seems like a popular tourist attraction. The chips aka fries were also good. They were pipping hot and had a good crunch. The coleslaw was forgettable and average tasting. The chowder was different. It was mildly spicy with a hint of coconut flavour. There was an okay amount of fish and plenty of corn. I think it was good to try this version, but I prefer the New England style of chowder. I did enjoy our meal here during our visit in Victoria. However, I would try something else next time when I am in town because there are plenty of fish and chips options closer to home.

Yelp
As good as they say it is. We got there at about 11:30 on a Thursday so only had to wait a few minutes to order and then ten minutes for our food. Waiting (-and eating) were done at bar stools looking out at the water watching minnows swim and ships dock. We ordered the two piece salmon and chips - they knew we were splitting so kindly gave us two containers. The salmon was awesome - the right amount of crispy batter and perfectly cooked salmon inside. The fries and slaw were delicious - fries were crispy outside and soft inside - slaw was cool and crunchy and a nice accent to all the grease. Tartar sauce also delicious. A fun stop for a vacation meal!

Yelp
Amazing place. My mom and I stopped by here two days in a row to pick up Tacones. The first day we tried the wild salmon, jerk salmon, and tempura cod and loved the wild salmon the most that we got two the second day to bring on the Clipper back to Seattle. It was recommended by a friend in Ottawa to check out and I'm glad to have gone twice. The service is fast and friendly and prices are very affordable. It is a hut with bar stools outside and benches nearby. It is quite unique being the most reviewed place in the lovely city of Victoria on Yelp having an outdoor setup.
google avatar

Jamie R.

Yelp
Halibut fish & chips are amazing and great quality! Fried pickles are interesting, not sure I'd try them again but they are cheap so I'd give it a go for the experience! You pay slightly more for this place but it's well worth it for the quality. Service is good. Lots of cool outdoor seating along the boardwalk or you can walk 2 minutes and eat near the inner harbour.
google avatar

Thuyvu P.

Yelp
Oh man this hit the spot! I got two fish and chips (cod) and a clam chowder. The fish and chips were cooked to perfection, lightly battered and pretty large portion of fish fillets. The chowder was on the spicy side and nothing like the original but in the best way possible.

Yelp
Red Fish Blue Fish was one of the highlights during our quick stay in Victoria. Be prepared to wait in line, in-person- there's no online waitlist or queue. We came during lunch hour on a weekend and waited close to 45 minutes. You order at the register, then find your own seats. I would say seating is a little limited, so I would be weary coming here with a big group. Fish & Chips 4/5: We tried both the BC Halibut and Pacific Cod. If you prefer a thicker, more meaty fish, get the Halibut. If you want something more delicate and flaky, get the Pacific Cod. Surprisingly, I liked the Pacific Cod more! I thought the Halibut was a little too thick, it overpowered the crunch of the fry. Tacones 4/5 - We got the Wild Salmon version and the Tempura Cod version, on a tostado. These get messy! If you order the regular version (on a tortilla), I recommend eating it ASAP because it can get soggy and impossible to eat. They gave large chunks of salmon and lots of sauce and toppings. The tostado version is worth trying as well! It was a little easier to eat and had a good crunch. Chowder 5/5 - Not your traditional, average chowder! It has an Asian twist, with a coconut, curry like flavor (has a slight kick). Lots of seafood and is a hearty break from all the fried food. Even though I love traditional clam/seafood chowders, this really wow'ed me. One of my favorite dishes!

Yelp
This little fish shack is located on the marina in Victoria. It is not fancy, you order at the window and sit on stools overlooking the water. They call your name when your food is hot and ready. The chowder is delicious! So much flavor, it has coconut milk and lots of ingredients. The fish and chips were large portions, the fish was very lightly coated. The fries were salted and hot, yum. I love how they use only compostable containers and utensils.

Mike A.

Yelp
I would put this as a must go place. It's exactly what you want. Great fish and chips on the water. That tarter sauce is fantastic! I was dragging the fries through it.
google avatar

Sasha K.

Yelp
This a must try in Victoria and once you try, you'll make sure to keep going back for more. The fish (any kind) is incredibly fresh and they have a variety of burritos and tacos. Their salsa is popping with flavour and the chipotle sauce has the perfect hints of smokiness. Personally I like to get a tostada style taco with the crispy shell it just hits all the right textures. The service is friendly and fast at the beautiful and busy fisherman's wharf.

Sunny G.

Yelp
Went for the first time yesterday. Chowder was great, but I found that jerk fish poutine was not so desirable. Fries were too crispy and well done. It was too dry for me and not something I would order again. And also, there was only one person taking orders and she was also serving chowder which might explain the long line. We were waiting in line for about 45 min. Wish they had a more efficient system.
google avatar

Yelp
We had to return to RFBF on our visit to Victoria and the food is just as good as I remembered! We got even MORE of their fish and chips this time trying their cod and halibut each in an order of two pieces with chips and it was amazing. The batter is so light and the fish is not overcooked at all. The portions are generous and the fries were crispy and great with some ketchup. Of course we got the Tacone which had plenty of ahi tuna inside and because their fish is so good, we also got the grilled ahi tuna on salad. We were shocked at how large the portions were and the slightly seared cookery of the tuna was done expertly. It is located near the harbour and only outdoor seating is available. There is usually a line but the staff there move quick and are so nice! Overall, a must visit when in Victoria!
google avatar

Yuli L.

Yelp
My first impression of Red Fish Blue Fish was the long line, but it's also a good sign as the food must be good. Fortunately the line was long but it moved pretty quickly.  From seeing other people's food, everything looked so good. When we finally got ours, I can confirm the food does not only look amazing, it tasted great too! We ordered the Cod Tacos, Halibut fish n chips, Ahi Tuna salad and a chowder bowl. Everything was in big portion and tasted so good, but my favorites were the Halibut fish n chips and the Ahi Tuna salad. The Halibut was so tender and the Ahi Tuna salad tasted so refreshing in contrast to the fried food. We sat at under the covered deck area and really enjoyed watching boats coming and going while we enjoyed our lunch. Overall, we really loved this little stand and would like to come back whenever we visit Victoria again.
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
Yep, this was worth the visit. Everyone told us to come here for fish and chips, and they were right. The fish was lightly battered and got and crispy. The chips were crispy and full of flavor. Come early for lunch to avoid what can be a long line.
google avatar

Valerie K.

Yelp
If you're in Victoria, this spot is a *must-try*, hands down some of the best seafood I've ever tried. I sampled several things from the menu and wasn't disappointed. It's a busy spot, so be prepared for a wait, but oh is it worth it!
google avatar

Shierly Y.

Yelp
It is the BEST grilled salmon in vancouver, BC. The salmon was very fresh and light. The fish and chips were okay, but I like the chips better than pajo's. Have to try during your visit to Victoria! Lunch time is not busy.
google avatar

Annabel L.

Yelp
Long wait but best fish taco I've ever had in the northern American continent. Haha. I have to hand it to them for making the flour tortilla delightfully thin it felt like a crepe in the best way possible. I hate when tortillas are too bready and thick. Now I just wish they had spicy salsa now. If you're stuck on deciding, like I was, I'd stick to the fish taco and would say you're not missing out from the difference between cod and halibut (Halibut was boasted as Victorias prized fish); fish is fish!
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
So good--absolutely the best fish and chips I've ever had. The batter was light but still crunchy, perfectly complemented by the tartar sauce. You can really taste the quality of the fish--flaky yet moist, with a very generous fillet. It's easy to see why this place is a local favorite. Just make sure to get there early to avoid long lines. The location by the water is nice and very accessible.
google avatar

Julia G.

Yelp
OUTSTANDING fish and chips. There was a long line when we arrived (it never went away) but the wait was so worth it. It probably took about 20 minutes of waiting before we ordered, but they have umbrellas for shade that help when it's hot . The fish is incredibly fresh and flaky. We got the 2 piece fish and chips, which they give you ginormous pieces. We also opted for the fish taco and the seafood poutine fries. All were delicious. The seating is very limited but they have a lot of standing bar areas to stand and eat.
google avatar

Philip C.

Yelp
Service was outstanding. I ordered a bottle of water and the server reminded me that I can get filtered water for free. She then took the bottle of water off my bill. No upsell and I thought that was so sweet and considerate. I only waited 30 minutes to order and get my two tacones. They were good but I probably wouldn't wait any longer for it. As it is, I'm already regretting passing up the turtle pond in Beacon Hill Park during my short stay in Victoria.
google avatar

Allie L.

Yelp
We were looking for something light after eating a heavy dinner the previous night. Red Fish Blue Fish was the perfect place. Their fish tacos are so good and the price is right!! It was raining in Victoria but that didn't stop us and others from eating tacos outdoors! I got the Pacific Cod and it was cooked perfectly! The crispy batter stayed crisp after each bite! I got a side of coleslaw and it was a nice balance of flavors. I saw a couple feasting on fish and chips and the fish was huge! We walked by again the next day and the place was packed! Everyone eating their tacos and enjoying the sun!
google avatar

Frannie Y.

Yelp
I love fish and chips and Red Fish Blue Fish was exactly what I wanted! My partner and I went there around 2pm on a Sunday expecting to be past the lunch rush, but we were very wrong. There was quite a long line, and we still waited about 40 minutes to order, but it was also the same weekend as the Victoria marathon, so there were more people in town than usual. We ordered one piece of the halibut since we weren't super hungry, and I'm glad we shared one piece bc it was huge! It was so perfectly crispy and the halibut was super flaky. I didn't love their fries because I felt like I couldn't taste the potato in a bunch of the fries and it mostly just felt like fried batter, but I'd come back for sure just for the fish.

Yaya M.

Yelp
Had lunch here while on vacation. We ordered two of the signature items: 1) Halibut Fish and Chip, 2) Chowder. Halibut is super fresh and the batter is thin. The chowder is one of the best i have ever had, perfect texture, not too thick or too thin, the coconut milk and lime makes their chowder unique. It has a spicy kick without overpowering. The lady taking the orders was very friendly. The waterfront view is unbeatable. Expect long lines though. We got there around 1pm and stayed in lineFor about 30-40 minutes.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
YUM. I had one meal in Victoria and walked out of a fancy waterside restaurant to eat here. It was well worth the choice. I found this place via Yelp. It is there most rated and highest rated food establishment in downtown Victoria, and for good reason. I had the halibut fish and chips and it did not disappoint. I got two pieces but ended up taking one home because they were so huge! Breading was perfect and the fish was cooked beautifully. The ambience was also great. I think I arrived around 6pm with only one person ahead of me in line, and the line didn't go past 6 people the whole time I was there. Monday evening after a holiday did not disappoint I love the lemon dressed coleslaw; what a clever way to add acid without giving out thousands of lemon slices a day. The ketchup was also amazing (a comment that could only made by Americans who cannot find ketchup unadulterated with corn extracts). The tartar sauce seemed fresh; I'm not sure if they made it or if is just way less mayo-based than in the US, but I'd bottle and sell it if I was this place. Fries were fries, maybe out of a freezer bag... nothing to write home about but who cares? We're here for fish. All of the packaging is compostable - utensils, dishes, sauce cups, drink cups. None of your personal trash goes into their bins. They don't have much in the way of carry out but they will wrap your tray in parchment and that kept it nice for breakfast. Not quite crisp, but also not super soggy. I can easily see why people stand in line for ages for this food, and I would have done it too. Come on down to the waterfront when you're in Victoria.
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
This is a must do lunch/dinner spot in Victoria! It's a very casual spot with no table service. The line will likely be long but don't let that put you off. Everybody is here for good eats and the line moves pretty quickly. You order and pay in one line and wait for your food in another area. We had a little bit of everything: Halibut with fish and chips Pacific codfish and chips Fried dill pickles Albacore Tuna tacone Salmon tacone Clam chowder Everything was superb! Definitely get an assortment of everything. The halibut pieces were bigger than the cod. It was also more flavorful, as in the cod was milder tasting than the halibut. We'll definitely come back the next time we're in Victoria!
google avatar

Holley Janae P.

Yelp
We went to Red Fish Blue Fish while on a day trip to Victoria. Although the line was long, it passed quickly. The people taking orders were kind and friendly, mindful that most customers had waited 30 minutes or more to order. The restaurant is right next to the marina on the pier, so there are plenty of places to stand or sit while enjoying good views of the water or passing boats. The food was delicious! Everything we ordered was fantastic and I'd be happy to return if I ever get the opportunity.
google avatar

Annisa S.

Yelp
Some of the best salmon I've had. So fresh and tasty. Cooked perfectly. Loved the location - perfect ambiance eating by the water! Had a decent wait time, but totally worth it!
google avatar

Mas K.

Yelp
Totally deserves the top ratings it gets. Cod and chips were fantastic, better than the three times I've had it in London (and I'm not talking about Ontario)! You can totally tell the Cod was fresh (not spongey) and the chips were twice fried so nice and crispy! Lovely location with plenty of seating right on the water.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
I will be dreaming about this meal. Hands down the BEST fish & chips I've had in my life... like I cannot express how good it was. The wait was a bit long between standing in line & then waiting for your food to come out. I particularly had to wait extra longer cause someone else accidentally took my order, but it was obviously worth it and I'd do it again. The servers were also super apologetic which was kind. It's located right on the pier so you can eat while looking out on the water, very blissful vibes. I'd come back to Victoria just for this place.
google avatar

Jane M.

Yelp
Wanted to try this place during my recent trip to Victoria BC. The best fish & chips in Victoria! Amazingly fresh halibut - melts in your mouth. The tartar sauce and slaw was delicious and we also gt their chipotle spicy mayo & spicy spot prawn sauce. Along with this we ordered their jerk fish poutine which was divine and their tostada which was good. But if there is one thing you MUST eat its their fish & chips. Worth the looong line during lunch hours. They have ample patio kinda seating with umbrellas on the pier. Food is out pretty quick and the staff is also polite and friendly. Highly recommend this spot.
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
I only gave it 3 stars cause the jerk fish poutine was less to be desired. It was clumpy, the flavor was decent but I was not impressed with my first time having poutine! I'll try again at another restaurant. Now my fish and chips was amazing! I enjoyed them in the comfort of my hotel cause it was a little cool & rainy outside and they only have a small space with covered seating and it was full. Service was ok cause they was busy and about to close, but I would defiantly go back for the fish and chips!
google avatar

JoAnn R.

Yelp
Fast service, super friendly, reasonably priced and the best fish and chips we ever had hands down. The fish was so fresh and crispy, the fries were so crispy and did not taste like fish as lots of places do. Highly recommend!
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Some of the best seafood tacos I've had in my entire life. Eating by the harbor was a serene experience (although I recommend bringing a jacket). I got to sample my party's fish and chips and chowder, which were also phenomenal.
google avatar

Alan Z.

Yelp
Came here for lunch and since it was raining, wasn't too busy. Got the halibut and it was more food than I was expecting. Fish was nice and quality of the food was great. Fries were also decent and were crispy. Coleslaw isn't really my thing so I tried it and it seemed fine but didn't really enjoy it that much.
google avatar

Val K.

Yelp
So glad we took a friend's advice to seek out this little take out shack right on the harbor at Victoria. It was rainy off and on which is likely why the line was fairly short and service was quick We got some advice on the menu while in line chatting to other visitors who make it up to Victoria more frequently. I had my sights on the traditional cod fish and chips but was swayed to do the BC Halibut instead. That was absolutely the right choice! The fish was so tender and tasty - softer than the cod and just the ultimate bites in the crispy tempura batter. I also had the Chipotle fish chowder wtih corn and white fish which was quite different from what you would expect. The Coconut and chipoltle flavor took it to a different level. Being in Hawaii, you expect we would have great options for fish and chips but the fresh Pacific caught fish from this area really made the difference. We also were able to grab a seat under the tented seating area overlooking the harbor. Perfect!
google avatar

Ry T.

Yelp
We stopped for fish and chips and the line was long but moved steadily. You place your order and wait for them to call you to pick up. We tried a cup of their chowder, too spicy for me but loaded with veggies especially corn and chunks of white fish. It was OK but i would not order again. We splurged and shared an order of halibut fish and chips. Hubby prefers cod which he thinks is less dry. The batter was light and crispy and crunchy. The fries were seasoned, thin and crispy. All very good. You have a view of the harbor and boats. There are bar type seats facing the water. If we return, will try the cod next time
google avatar

Jodi P.

Yelp
Go for the fish and chips for sure ! This place typically has a line but it goes quickly. There is some seating available , but not a ton- there is also some standing table area as well. The salad I got was okay ,, it needed a more flavorful dressing , and the chowder is not a traditional chowder it has a coconut milk base so just and fyi. It's fun to be by the marina though so it's a great spot to be- good ambiance.
google avatar

Richard U.

Yelp
Quite a nice chippy on the waterfront! There are a lot of places you can get fish and chips in Victoria, but I think this is one of the best! Menu has some nice options but they do excel in your basic fish and chips. They offer wild salmon, halibut and cod for fried fish options. I had the cod and it was perfectly crispy and not soggy at all. The chips were also perfectly crispy! Twice fried perhaps? You can also get like as a taco-wrap (tacone) or sandwich. If you are looking for a less fried option, you can get grilled wild salmon or albacore over salad! I got the wild salmon and it was a generous serving over greens. Instead of your standard new England style chowder theirs was Chipotle coconut based with white fish. Decadent! The place sits on the dock in the inner harbor and searing is pretty much al fresco. The line seems to be ever present especially during cruise ship season! Get there early!
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
The PLACE to get fish and chips in Victoria! It was so worth the 40 min queue. You get a giant piece of fish and tons of fries. So crispy and salty - loved it! And I enjoyed the seating area overlooking the water. Service was quick and efficient.

Yelp
Yum yum yummmmm !! Our cruise ship went to Victoria for a few hours and aside from the Hop On Hop Off Bus, Red Fish Blue Fish was our only stop and man it was worth the wait. We had a bit of a hard time finding Red Fish and Blue Fish. I knew it was by the water somewhere, but stumbled upon some stairs leading down to the long line of people. There were some stools/seating along the pier overlooking the water. We had a great few of some sea planes and boats. Yes there was a line. But the line moved fairly fast. The chowder was really tasty and full of flavor. My husband and I shared a cup and it was enough for both of us as a quick "snack" as they gave us the chowder before our Tacones were ready. The Alcabore Tuna Tostada Style was probably my favorite out of the four Tacones we had. The crunch from the crunchy tortilla and slaw matched perfect with the soft seared tuna. The Wild Salmon Tacone had great flavor and the salmon tasted fresh and didn't have a fishy taste (actually all of the fish didn't have that fishy taste). The Tempura Cod was soooo good. The batter on the cod was perfect. The Jerk Fish Tacone was also full of flavor, but I wish it had a bit of a kick. I think if it really has that Caribbean Jerk kick it would've been a fave for us.

Yelp
A lovely place to get quick bites and also pocket friendly in a downtown full of pricey restaurants. We had the Salmon sandwich and the tacos. The taco isn't sufficient if you are an hungry adult. But the sandwich is good enough. Try the fried pickles too. The place is crowded. Not sure about parking since we were staying in downtown and this place was close by. Definitely a beautiful view .

Yelp
Between the ambience/view and the food.. this place is delish! We got the cod fish and chips $20 for one big piece and the salmon $20 ish. Both were flavored and cooked well. Even the fries were good! We also tried a chipotle seafood chowder, which was a little thinner than we expected but pretty good! The line was long as expected but we waited about 15 minutes and got to eat by the water on a sunny day. Service was friendly at check out.

Yelp
This was some eyes rolling back in your head amazing fish & chips. The tartar sauce and spicy ketchup was a slay, the coleslaw was light and complimented the food fantastically, the poutine had a great Jamaican jerk flavor. EVERYTHING was bomb. Outdoor seating only on the dock, but worth the chills. 100/10.

Yelp
I was cleaning up my food pictures and realized I didn't write a review for a fish shack we visited on a cruise that stopped in Victoria, BC. We were looking for fresh fish and chips and found this little Fish shack on the water. Everybody in the family ordered variations of fish and chips ranging from fresh pacific cod, fresh halibut or fresh salmon. They also have seafood tacos, grilled fish and clam chowder. Our goal was to find fresh fish and chips. The fish has a nice crunchy batter, the fish is very fresh, not oily and the fries are crispy and fried well, not under or over cooked. The fries had extra salt and the fish retained a little bit of oil. The Cole slaw was good and the tarter sauce had the right amount of relish. Red Fish, Blue Fish is one of the better fish and chips we have had. If you are on a cruise stopping over or visiting Victoria, stop by to have very good fish and chips. Enjoy seats looking over the marina.

Yelp
TL;DR: popular fish and chips spot, semi worth the hype; line was consistently long; good fry batter and french fries Came here around noon and the line was ~30 people long. The line moved at a moderate pace and we were ordered at about 20 minutes. FOOD: ~Chowder (3.5/5): has coconut in it that was a prominent flavor. Reminded me of like a thai curry with indian flavors in there as well. Wasn't expecting that, but it was pretty good ~Fried Pickles (3/5): pretty good, but wish the pickles were a little thicker or the batter was a little thinner ~Fries (5/5): couldn't stop eating them ~Cod (3.5/5): some parts of the cod were more cooked than others. But overall was very juicy ~Cod Tacones (4/5): really liked the fried fish, tortilla, slaw, and sauce combo ~Halibut (2/5): was very dry ~Salmon (3.8/5): was yummy but needed a small dash of salt Worth a try if you're in the area

Yelp
TLDR 3.5 stars: the place is expensive, but if you come, then the poutine and fish+chips were both pretty good, but I wouldn't get both bc that's a lotta fries Got the 2pc cod fish & chips. Pretty good, but a few gripes: - Topsides were nice n crispy, but undersides were soft, even after only a minute or two. - First fish fell out of the fried casing, so they weren't bonded enough. - Second fish was sometimes tough to bite bc it probably still had cod meat from directly under the skin. Tartar sauce was great, but I often needed to take a few bites of the fish before I could fit it into the container again. So, the tartar cup should be wider. Coleslaw had zero mayo, which is greater blasphemy than Galileo in 1633. Poutine was pretty dang good, and had a meaty note. Probably bc of the Caribbean sauce. Orange soda tasted more like a flat lemon. Finally, this place is expensive asl for, essentially, street food - EIGHTY dabloons for, like, 3 or 4 bowls!

Yelp
Very fresh fish and chips, tacos, and chowder. Best in town that I've tried. Chowder is curry based so not your typical New England white. Tasty but will catch you off guard if you're expecting the other. Standing bar only no seating and can have long lines, but it's worth the experiment if just once when you're in Victoria.
