The Saddest Restaurant Closures to Know in San Diego, May 2025 | Eater San Diego

"Suddenly shuttered its doors on May 12 due to financial challenges. The classic steak-and-potatoes pub with a piano bar features Tudor paneling and a fireplace that dates back to 1642; Hollywood icon Marion Davies had an old inn in Surrey, England disassembled and shipped to the U.S., and some rooms were installed here in 1959. Owner Jim Demos hopes to reopen in September, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune." - Helen I. Hwang

70 New Restaurants and Bars That Have Opened in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"I returned to the retro steakhouse and piano bar that reopened across the street from its decades-old location, reportedly retaining former employees and many original decorations to help recreate the old vibe in the new space after losing its lease and a two-year hiatus." - Candice Woo

Beloved Bar Red Fox Room Extends Stay On El Cajon Boulevard | Eater San Diego

"Purchased by the Red Fox Room’s owners as a stand-alone building across the street from The Lafayette Hotel, the former hair salon at 2200 El Cajon Boulevard will be refitted so the wood-paneled bar and lounge can be recreated piece by piece as the Red Fox’s next chapter." - Candice Woo

Discover San Diego’s Hidden Gems | Eater

"Tucked into the side of the Lafayette Hotel in North Park is the Red Fox Steakhouse, which also features a lively piano bar that brings revelers from all over San Diego to its cozy singing area. Unsurprisingly, classic steakhouse fare is the move at Red Fox, but for a more casual vibe, sit at the bar with your Elysian beer and a burger to catch some tunes." - Vox Creative

Google
Traveled from out of town and wanted a premium steakhouse and Red Fox Room did not disappoint! Chris was an EXCELLENT waiter! The ambiance was top notch. I was very impressed that they had the piano bar on a weeknight. They even took requests. The serving sizes are quite generous and the cocktails were marvelous! If we ever come back to SD, we will definitely stop by!

Food (Steaks & Lobster) were fabulous. Cocktails were great. Server (Hannah) was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. We had the Ribeye, NY Cut and Top Sirloin. The steaks were grilled to perfection. Appetizers were very good. This is the quintessential old style steakhouse that does NOT disappoint. Parking right around the corner.

What a great retro dining experience. The atmosphere is sublime and relaxing. It feels like, and is, an old school, steak house. I started with French Martini, my dining partner had an Old Fashioned, and both were perfect. I ordered the Steak and Cod after finding out that the Cod was broiled. It's my favorite way and hard to find! The meal came with salad, garlic toast, and a side, I chose a baked potato. Everything was very good and generous. My fellow chose the pork chops, and they , too, were happy with their meal. Service was wonderful , timely, and informative.

Everything about The Red Fox was wonderful! The outside is quite unassuming, but inside, this place is warm and cozy and a great place on a cold night. The food and service were first class. We were celebrating a birthday and Danee, our server, made the whole experience very special. The calamari appetizer was one of the best calamari dishes I've ever had - and I've been a big calamari lover my entire life. We both ordered the steak and lobster tail and were not disappointed. We will definitely be back.

We got lucky and stumbled into this absolute gem . We are from Australia and this restaurant fulfilled all the Americana we could ever need. The piano bar lets you sing a song and I serenaded my wife after some amazing cocktails and Zinfandel 🙂. Honestly couldn’t recommend enough. Good food. Good atmosphere and nice staff

This may be a new location but it has an old classic feel to it. This place definitely caters to an older crowd. It had an antique feel With stained wood, low lights, And even had a live music from a piano and a saxophone players. They did request and even allowed karaoke like sing alongs. The staff was friendly and helpful. For the food I ordered the steak and lobster. I got the baked potato as a side and it came with a side salad and garlic bread. The dinner salad was with a good choice of house made dressing but I was disappointed with the what I'm guessing were the house made croutons. They had good flavor but many were soft and no crunch. The steak and lobster can I tried the steak which I believe it was supposed to be the porterhouse steak which I asked for rare but was closer to medium. The taste had a good flame flavor but felt lacking in salt and pepper seasoning so I resorted to asking for A1( I always taste a Steak with a couple bites before considering steak sauce as a good steak carries itself.) The lobster was good. The baked potato was soft though I prefer a slightly more crispy skin. The chocolate Mousse Pie was good. I finished with a Chocolate Martini a little smaller then I'm use to but it was stronger than I anticipated. I liked it but it kinda felt like if Sizzler was more upscale and a nicer atmosphere.

It was everything great. The meat was cooked perfectly and the waitress was amazing. She brought each the food at the right time. The only part I dislike is that I couldn’t se with band playing from where I sat, but it wasn’t a big deal. So I’d come back for sure.

First time in the new location. They still kept it dark inside. Only one sever for the whole place at lunch. Food was good I ordered the Pork Chop plate and did not disappoint. It was very good. They only half a piece of bread which is delicious but definitely a teaser.
