"To get into Red Frog, you must first meander through Monkey Mash Bar and find the closet door (another option: just ask the staff). Behind that door is a meticulously designed speakeasy with green wood-paneled walls, ornate chandeliers, and plush couches where you can get cozy and touch knees with your date. This is a craft cocktail kind of spot, and the menu is based around unexpected ingredient blends—the Zeppelin Funk Punch pairs earl grey with buttermilk and gin, and the American Gangster is a mix of bourbon, maple, cinnamon, and cocoa. It’s a popular bar but tiny, so reservations are essential." - Rita Geraldes

I had the cheeseburger, and it was very tasty. The employees here like what they do and it shows. Plenty of room in the lot out front and available places at the bar and at tables inside and out to dine. Clean bathrooms and cool decorations throughout the restaurant.

Google
What a great find! Menu is simple, hot dogs are juicy and delicious, drinks are great, so many things to look at. Going back for a burger next time. Mimosa was the best! The drive in the hills was nice from Marysville, and the weather was perfect to sit outside. You can walk around some and take a look at all the items they decorated the place with. They are rare and really cool. As mentioned before the menu is simple and the prices are great. We usually share but we didn't this time. The atmosphere is more for adults I'd say rather than family with children. Low lighting and natural lighting was nice. I will never forget the 10 inch hot dog though. Plane or supreme we all thought they were delicious. The drinks were not expensive I thought $6. For a Mimosa was pretty good providing the sparkling wine bottle to go with the orange juice was a treat. Make your Mimosa weak or strong, I poured and drank, poured and drank to get that full flavor everytime. :) Gotta visit this place if you are ever going up 174. We ventured out for a bike ride to find a place to eat, and this is the place we will probably visit more often.

This is a great place. Views are special. Back of the bar overlooks sierra canyon. Train to reno passes right under the window. Food was excellent

Good drinks. Limited snack menu. Good atmosphere and a neat view of the canyon out back. Outdoor hangout only. You can smoke and there are hearers.

Google
Fun entertaining experience. Very kid friendly at 330pm. View on outdoor covered back patio was excellent. With some old cars and fun stuff to spot and find with younger kids. Got to see a train go by.. There was an old school sit down arcade game and a box of big block Jenga available. They had a kiddie pool with water ,balls and toys set up on front patio . A homie little fun place . Especially to chat with some locals and passer byers. Husband ordered long Island which was 8.00 . Cheaper than the 10.00 margaritas but they had a variety of yummy flavored margaritas available. No happy hour available though. Menu consisted mainly of bar food, hamburgers and pizza options. All priced very reasonably. We got the mountain of fries, jalapeño poppers and a small Hawaiian pizza. The pizza was amazingly yummy! Fries were little underdone but good. Poppers were very hot like lava when delivered and tasty.

Google
Quaint little bar/restaurant just outside Colfax, CA, along hwy 174 as you head towards Rollins Lake and Grass Valley. Great atmosphere with an outside bar overlooking the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Staff is very attentive and extremely friendly and strive to make sure you enjoy yourself. Biker friendly with paved parking in front..highly recommend this place. 👌

Google
This place is now the only bar in Colfax. For a small place it's quite satisfying. It's a good choice if your just wanting to grab a cold one on a hot day or even grab a bite to eat. The staff is always on point and friendly.

Google
Driving by The Red Frog, it looked like the place to go. My friends and I had heard so many good things about it, and it did not disappoint. Even on a Saturday night it wasn't overly busy. It’s definitely a local hangout spot, and you can tell everyone loves it there. The service was great; all the staff were super kind and even happy to make changes to a drink if you wanted. The burgers and fries were delicious—probably the best I’ve had in a while. But honestly, nothing really beats the view from the back deck. You can see the whole area, and it’s just beautiful, especially around sunset. Plus, the decor inside and all over the property is really cool. It’s got this cozy yet lively vibe that makes you want to stay and hang out for hours. If you’re ever in the area and looking for a great place to eat and chill, The Red Frog is definitely the spot.

Yelp
Would recommend! Post hike rehydration station. Don't tell your friends. Sit on the back patio for the views and the nostalgia of second hand smoke. Frosty beer & jalapeño poppers hit the spot. Dive bar with a view. To be honest (from one lesbian to another) some of the clientele might be a tad homophobic but the bartender is really cool and has excellent trail tips. Worth the stop!

Yelp
"Take the humor in and enjoy it!" Wise words from a seasoned bar patron. We loved this place. It is "unusual" and delightful for its irreverence.

Katrina R.

Yelp
The Red Frog is a townie dive bar classic. Food is a solid B. Smoking allowed in the bar. Frozen sugary drinks hit on a hot day, lots of other variety of cheap drinks too. Great views out the back. Kind of feels like it belongs in the show Sons of Anarchy. Come here for stiff drinks and a view. But don't stay too long lol

P K.

Yelp
Great music in the background, mellow/country. Service was fast for drinks, a little slow for the food. Burger was really good, french fries were good, though a little soft. Jalapeño poppers were decent. I would go back again, especially for just drinks.

John C.

Yelp
We have been coming here for years and always had to sit outside at the bar as the inside was closed. Parking is right out front. Now the inside is open and glad it is as it was a cold day. Seating is limited so we sat at the bar. Since we were at the bar service was excellent, friendly bartender, beer was cold, cheeseburgers and fries were what we expected. This is a "Dive Bar" and it delivers. We are looking forward to warm weather so we can sit outside as the view is outstanding.

Jack C.

Yelp
We really loved this spot! The vibe was festive and fun, great view, great margaritas! We will be back!

Yelp
A few friends decided to go on a motorcycle ride in the foothills and wanted to stop for lunch at The Red Frog. I had never been there and went on yelp to see the menu and reviews. There were horrible reviews regarding service dogs. I have a small service dog, well trained and not a bother, but the reviews said they did not allow service dogs. I called and asked the woman who answered the phone if service dogs were allowed. I even mentioned the bad reviews and that I did not want to make a fuss. If it was going to be a problem I would go somewhere else. She said that they were trying to improve the service dog issue and that it should not be a problem. She also said that we could sit on the patio. From the photos I assumed the patio was in the back. When we arrived and entered I was holding my service dog in my arms. Two different staff members started YELLING at me "no dogs, no dogs." I stated that I had called the day before and was told the service dog would be allowed to enter. I said I wanted to let my friends know that I was told to leave. They continued to yell at me. I went out to the front fenced area without any shade and no one came out to take an order or bring any water etc. We decided it was not going to work out and we left. It was obvious that they had no interest in keeping out business. In a previous review the owner had stated that he did not want to get sued because a service dog might bite another patron. Service dogs do not bite, they do their jobs. How would the owner like to be sued for discrimination and not following the ADA rules? Do they have handicapped parking? are their bathrooms ADA accessible? This could get very expensive.

Erika A.

Yelp
Lady behind the counter was super strange and acted like us being there was a bother. Told us "ugh I hate cooking, but I guess I will since that's what you're here for".

Debra A.

Yelp
We stopped here to have lunch as we've been by a time or two and always wanted to check it out. Very disappointed in the food. My husband and brother-in-law had the double burger, which looked like my homemade burger, nothing fancy, and they said they were good. My sister and I ordered the hot dog with the works ( no jalapeño), and they were awful. I make way better ones at home. The other thing is we shared a "mountain of fries" which were maybe a cup and a half, which were mostly burnt and I think they were either air fried or cooked in the oven. Tasteless. My husband did have a Bloody Mary and it had a bit too much hot sauce but not too bad. If you go, it has great stuff to look at and would probably be good in the summer for drinks (maybe their pizza is better?). Overall, not wasting $60 on a horrible lunch experience again.

Yelp
Cheap, amazing views, you can smoke, we did try burgers and beer - great! Thank you :)

Yelp
Craig P said turn off at the Colfax exit. Just off highway 174 is this rustic bar over looking a timber filled valley. As we pulled in around 2:30 on a Friday afternoon, we all rolled our eyes. The parking lot was full of motorcycles. What was Craig thinking taking us girls to a biker bar ? But walk straight thru the bar to the back where there's a large back porch bar. (Full of bikers, just enjoying the view and beer like us). The view is spectacular. Miles of trees. Stone outcroppings. Blue skies. Red frogs hanging from trees. And timed right you can see a train ride the mountain side. Service was quick and with a smile. The menu prices amused us more than the bikers. See picture below. $1.87 for corn dog. $6.05 for cheeseburger. Cute. Two cheeseburgers, mountain of fries, wings, corn dog and five adult beverages had a check of $45 for four people. Decent food and drink with stellar view at great prices- acceptable !!! Swing in for a break from I 80 driving and check the view and food out. You may even get a fist bump and a smile from a very large biker.

Yelp
Place just sucks per me and the wife if you cant make pizza well... it was like the worst frozen pizza you ever had !...nuff said ! Ok yelp wants more words but i cant think of anything else to say !

Sam P.

Yelp
Great food with an amazing view. Where the locals hang out ! Great and nice people I highly recommend if in the area !

Ted G.

Yelp
any bad reviews are CRAY-Zee. what do you expect? great dive bar. great atmosphere. reasonable prices. if you want high falutin food and decor, this ain't the place. if you want decent grub, COLD beer, good service, nice people - this is the place!

Jonathan N.

Yelp
Red frog is a nice bar with a good view. There are a lot of friendly people at red frog. They have really good food at a reasonable price. They have a taco Tuesday that can't be beat. Definitely come in on taco Tuesday and enjoy the atmosphere. If you live in Colfax or around Colfax you have no excuse for not swinging by and checking this place out. Cheers!

Leah F.

Yelp
The most beautiful view of the Sierra Nevada's...and a great meeting place if you live in Grass Valley and/or Colfax (general area-Alta I-80).

Matthew O.

Yelp
What a great place ! Fantastic view, friendly staff , affordable , and strong drinks. Who could ask for more !

Faith L.

Yelp
Can't sit outside if you don't like cigarettes because it's a smoke fest and ash trays are right there next to you and almost every one was lit up. No regard to laws or other people trying to eat while people are just hanging out on their phones play slot machine games. Red Frog is it's own world.

David B.

Yelp
I've been going to the Red Frog for years. The view is outstanding, and the bartender is a nice lady that has been there as long as I have been going there. I actually came here riding back from street vibrations and I was so disappointed. My girl and I hadn't eaten and just wanted a quick hot dog, as we were going to continue on to eat dinner later. The service was so poor we were there for well over an hour and only got one drink. The guy cooking was doing one order at a time, when almost everyone appeared to be ordering hot dogs or burgers. He would cook and than walk out and deliver than go back and cook again. After almost walking out the hot dogs finally came. They were super hot on the outside, and ice cold in the middle. After two bites, we both were done. I complained and said they were inedible. I was super upset that they than charged me for the ice hot dogs. Its a friggin hot dog, how do you mess that up? After being a patron for many years, I will NEVER order food from The Red Frog again.

Susan T.

Yelp
Tuesday august 23rd finally got hangout with my 3 Safeway girlfriends hangout with my! First place came across .... We were hungry!!!!! Drove by Red frog restaurant.... it was Tuesday $1 taco day ! Sooooo This was my first time yummy sangria $10 ! Hanna was outstanding customer service and very bubbly! Ck out! Be back next adventure

Rhonda F.

Yelp
A fun locals place with great hamburgers and pizza. The food inexpensive and good. We each had a Red Frog burger and loved it. But you can get that in a lot of places. What you don't always get and they excel here at is is very genuinely friendly service. Actually, everyone in the place was friendly and it was packed on this Friday night. There is plenty of outside deck seating which has a canyon view to die for! We sat and enjoyed our cold beer and burger under the heater and watched the train below roll by.

Reid V.

Yelp
This place is one of a kind. Who would have thought that just off of I-80, you would find one of the greatest dive bars in America. Beers are ice cold. Chili cheese dog was primo. But the best thing about this place are the views! The seating is porch like. Open to the outside but a roof over your head. Solid draft selection. Cheap beers. Cheep food. Very friendly staff. Highly recommend if you're in Colfax for any reason at all.

Gregory T.

Yelp
I get that it's a dive bar but this place is disappointing and next level disgusting. The inside of the place is completely closed off which is odd. The only place to go is a covered patio. In the covered patio you are completely surrounded by people smoking cigarettes. I'm not exaggerating, there were 10 people smoking cigarettes around me at once. I could barely breathe even though it was open air. The drinks were decent and the bartender was sweet so that's the only reason they get two stars. I would never trust food from here and will definitely not be coming back. Sad because it is in a cool place and has a great view of the canyon so if they cared like, at all... they could probably make an awesome high class bar or restaurant. But clearly class is not something they are striving for.

Donald T.

Yelp
A new favorite hangout! Great crowd! Fabulous atmosphere, A GREAT, OLD SCHOOL BARTENDER. If you have not been here, your loss, I love it! I am a new regular, already looking forward to my next visit! Just got my Hawaiian pizza to go, and even it is FABULOUS! If you are looking for me, I will be here! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Wes S.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a drink and a bite to eat. Got myself a corn dog, mini pepperoni pizza and a Coors light. The ladies working behind the bar were fun. Sat outside for a little bit for the scenery(which is awesome) but the smoke started bugging us. Inside we ate our food and watched the baseball playoffs. I hit up the jukebox. The prices are cheap here and the atmosphere is fun. Good views too.

Tim D.

Yelp
Right place to just relax and look at the best view in Colfax. Taco Tuesday is my favorite. Most taco you can get for the money.

Lisa H.

Yelp
Fun..funny folks .limited menu, Lots of beverages. Hp is fantastic. Beautiful scenery, airy and fresh.

Rebecca R.

Yelp
Cute little spot off of hwy 80. Simple bar menu, drinks are amazing! Food was good, service was wonderful. Can't recall our waitress name but she was on it alwasy asking if we need anything making sure all her guest were always with a drink or more food! They only have outside dining due to pandemic so bring a jacket. They have a couple patio heaters but it still gets a Littlw cold since u are in the mountains.

Kimberly P.

Yelp
5 stars for cold inexpensive beer on tap! Patio view of the mountains. Fun crowd, regulars I'm sure! Friendly service. Some food but we just needed to wet our whistle. We'll be back when we are in the area!

Melinda M.

Yelp
Was told they had good food. Stopped in and yes a very local bar which is not a problem but hamburgers were served before french fries then burgers were raw in the middle and when fries finally came they were soggy and I mean soggy not sure if they forgot to put them down when the order was out in or why the issue was. I just recommend if you stop here tell them we'll done and that you you would like your fries with your burger.

Patricia M.

Yelp
Poor service. Poor quality of food. Won't be back ever. I ordered a Bloody Mary and it was good except foe the dried up lime wedge. Lots of people in the bar "patio" were smoking. Not sure if that's allowed under CA laws. Ladies restroom toilet looks like it has never been cleaned, ever!

Jeffrey P.

Yelp
Epic back patio view accompanied by sticky tables and the stench of vomit, grandma perfume, camel piss, and broken dreams. If you can stomach the chain smoking regs, the cascading panoramic pines will tantalize your optics into another mediocre libation.

Mai T.

Yelp
We got a bunch of pizzas here and they are excellent. Very fun looking bar with a gorgeous view, haven't had the chance to explore that side of it yet, but from what I could see it was poppin' Great energy and again the pizza is

AuburnChicki E.

Yelp
I've been frequenting this place for almost as long as I've lived in Auburn now, over 15 years. Sure it's annoying as heck that they allow smokers on the back deck, especially when that's the main draw to the place - it has an amazing view and you can sit outside. That being said, the service is hit or miss. Linda is by far the only one there who always has my back and considers me a regular, but they have people come and go all the time. The food used to be really good, and now, much like the service has been hit or miss but you can't beat the prices. I go cause I love the cheap and coldest damn beer you can find anywhere, the view and the people are always eclectic and make for something as interesting and fun as the crazy decor.

Jay C.

Yelp
This place is pretty much only worth going to for the view. The food is mediocre pub food. The veggie burgers tasted like ass. No attempt to even spice them. You know... they are to be cooked just like meat- salt, pepper, etc. Room temperature fries. Staff sort of forgets about you. I guess this place is a place that you go for drinks, a view, and conversation. Skip the food.

michele b.

Yelp
https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/tobacco/Factsheets/commercial-outdoor-dining.pdf Pretty sure it is illegal to smoke outdoors where food is being served. Pretty disgusting to stop in for a bite and a beer and inhale tremendous amounts of smoke. Something has to be done.

Lynn A.

Yelp
If I could get by with zero stars I would. But I'll give the only star to the girl behind the bar. She was nice and efficient. I've had better frozen burger patties from Costco and consuming my food next to at least 6 smokers made me want hurl (and that's coming from a former smoker). We were outside and I was choking on smoke. Views are great but not worth the price, food quality, or air quality.

Thompson P.

Yelp
The food isnt good and the atmosphere feels shady. The people that eat her are just dysfunctional. The employees looked dirty and lacked hygiene. And everything taste like it's been microwaved.

Summer M.

Yelp
After a long hot hike on Steven's Trail, we found the Red Frog. I now have a new concept of heaven, paradise, nirvana, elysian fields, whatever. It goes like this... I enter a low-lit building where I'm greeted by staff. I walk out to the smoke-friendly back bar area which is a shaded outdoor open-air patio, and I'm greeted with a cool breeze and a fantastic view of the foothills. The back patio is decorated with a multitude of nautical, sealife, mermaid, and frog decor... there's even fish and whales and frogs in the treetops nearby. None of the barstools match but I like that kitschy charm- like every patron brought their own from home. There's even an old school arcade table. An angel named Linda takes my order with a smile and promptly brings my water and my coconut margarita, and even leaves a pitcher of water because she knows how thristy I am. Shortly after my drinks, my cheeseburger and fries arrive... the burger is deliciously greasy and I happily lick my hands clean. A fantastic venue filled with fantastic people, great drinks & food at good prices, and OH! Did I mention the overhead soundtrack to all this? Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, Tom Petty, Guns N Roses, Merle Haggard, Eminem, Percy Sledge, Gnarls Barkley and Pink Floyd, IN that order. Yep, it's heaven! :)

Erica E.

Yelp
This place is fun! I'm an out-of-towner and I saw that this is a place that the locals go. That is something that I look at as a positive. I checked it out and... and it's totally true. This is a place for the locals and the locals are awesome so that makes it a great place! I would totally come here again! Decor and vibe is awesome! The view is killer! Come down, enjoy a drink and chill with the locals!

Jose L.

Yelp
This is a nice cozy bar with a nice outdoor patio. You can also smoke out on the patio if you are a smoker. The view is amazing. The price point for the food is very reasonably. The food is good. There is plenty of parking in the front.

Jamie E.

Yelp
The food is very reasonably priced. We have only had pizza there, but go somewhat regularly. I have a service dog, Most every time I go there, I am treated badly by the staff, I decide I am never going again, and I end up needing a late meal and they are often the only place in town that stays open late enough for me to grab a bite. So tonight we had dinner there and everything was fine except the bar needs refinishing and feels gummy. But as we were about to leave, one of the staff came and started to tell me that I could not bring my dog the next time. Because it has a rotating staff, I don't often see the same crew twice and we last ate there less than two months ago. So the blonde curly haired waitress/bartender was not someone I had seen before. Because I have been given a hard time a number of times, I was quickly getting irritated. The waitress pointed out that she was just the messenger, and I immediately calmed down and apologized. But she was having none of my apology. I offered her my card so she could have the owner call me, and she blew me off, and walked away very angry, throwing glass bottles or glasses so hard that we were surprised they didn't break. To the owner: Unless you have managed to circumvent the federal laws that all the other owners of restaurants in the United States must conform to, you must serve us, after we have informed you that he is a service animal. My dog has accompanied me for 6 years, and after years you are still training your employees wrongly. You need to treat your customers better. Having a service dog is enough of a challenge to not have to be treated badly consistently.

Steve R.

Yelp
Very nice view out the back deck. Good prices. I've come here off and on for a number of years the service is more often than not pretty sketchy. Along with some of the people sitting at the bar look like they live there chain smoking. Today went there after a hike and was basically ignored for 15 minutes saw the bartender signal a very sketchy guy at the bar and they left to go outside to one of the picnic tables and looked like some sort of transaction taking place. She Just left the whole place unattended. No acknowledgement to us who were waiting or other people who were arriving So we left. Other than that it's great.

Manuel C.

Yelp
The mango margarita is a reason to stop, and enjoy the truly majestic view of theAmerican River Canyon, from the outdoor patio. Folks smoke cigarettes out there. I'm OK with that, just be warned. Good food, crispy fries, high-quality beef hamburgers, good pizza. The owner takes pride in running a nice, clean place, it shows.

Robert C.

Yelp
We were seated in the back which was a elevated porch overlooking nature. This is a local spot that seems like it might be a fun spot if we came during the time music was playing. A real rural down to earth spot where you can kick back and grab some suds. I had the double cheeseburger and the chicken. The burger was really done and was okay. The chicken were drummettes and little sections of the wings. Not a bad place to unwind.

Erin A.

Yelp
The view is beautiful and it's a cool place, have had some good experiences in the past but went yesterday and the bartender was very rude, sat there for almost 10 min and she didn't even acknowledge us. She served someone else a drink and then went to grab another drag of her cigarette, we walked out without being helped.

Lisa K.

Yelp
Stopped in Red Frog for a cold beer on way to GValley. Only one star because location is superior, the views are incredible. But this hole needs John Taffer! Seriously! They definatly need a Bar Rescue!,,The kitchen wasn't functioning, only served 7-11 hot dogs. Maybe cuz of COVID. People SMOKE there which is cool but not the way the patio is situated. Saw two female customers flicking their ashes over the railing. Timber dry all around, duhh quickly gave them ashtray from our table and "high tailed" it out of there. Get a cold beer on Main Street in Colfax

Judy D.

Yelp
I've come here the past 9 years. It's a fun loving place with great employees, fine locals, and lots to see, especially in the trees! Beautiful view.

Taylor C.

Yelp
I had stopped here to get lunch while on a road trip. The owner started arguing me because I had my service dog with me. She did what she is taught, laid right next to me and I even was respectful and sat outside with her. He told me I could either leave my dog outside or I had to leave because he did not want someone to get bit or trip on her leash (but she was in the corner laying under the bench I was sitting on) I tried to educate him on service dog, since he clearly didn't know much, and he just kept saying about how he knows a lot of fake service dogs.
