Philadelphia’s Hidden Gems: Best Bars, Restaurants, Parks, and Shops | Eater

"Hidden in plain sight, this spot is a local fave thanks to its homey feel and laid-back vibe, complete with exposed brick walls filled with colorful work from local artists. It’s the sort of place every neighborhood needs but not many have: They focus on doing a few things well rather than adding unusual ingredients to everything in an attempt to reinvent the wheel. The menu of breakfast and lunch (it opens at 7 a.m. for those getting an early start on the day) is made up of well-priced sandwiches (BLT, chicken salad, egg salad), wraps, and breakfast dishes, and there are plenty of vegan and gluten-free options, including tempeh bacon. The super-friendly servers don’t mind if you linger over your fair-trade coffee." - Vox Creative

True Review

Google
Cute cafe with a comfy atmosphere. Art and plants and a vast menu. There is most likely something for you on that menu. However, the coffee and coffee related drinks are not that great, a bit weak honestly. They need more pastries, especially fresh pastries. An old donut doesn’t cut it. My order was two items, and one of those simple items was wrong. The person working the counter was not really paying attention honestly. A new trash can is definitely needed. Trash on the floor is not a good look.

I love this place so much. Amazing food and delicious coffee (cappuccino). Staff are super nice and awesome! Great ambience, too. Always a pleasure…

Google
Place is pretty cozy and bench by the windows is really nice, although I think they waste half otfthe bar for picnic up when it could be sitting. Coffee Okey, sandwiches Okey but maybe need a little more flavor or seasoning. Nice staff, pretty fast service.

Google
I’m a big boy. And these are some big servings!! Servvous could have been a little bit quicker. But they making it all by scratch. Bacon egg and cheese on a bagel. And I couldn’t finish it all. Kudos. Will be back Breakfast of champi-eggs!! Amazing

Nice little location with lovely staff and good food. Plant based range could be increased though. Bagels are delicious!

Google
Gluten free options! My wife said this was the best breakfast sandwich she's ever had; complex, intentional flavors on gluten free "everything bread." We enjoyed breakfast and iced lattes here while visiting friends. Service was friendly, atmosphere is young-cafe (Green Day meets Tom Petty), and seating is comfortable but limited (6 tables and a few window seats). We'll be back!

Google
Loved the vibe of the place with an art gallery taking over the walls. The creative names of the dishes and drinks reminded me of bobs burgers lol. I got the seasonal special rose tea latte and it was very good. I also got the “peacher man” sandwich with eggs, veggies, veggie sausage, and peach jam which was very delicious. To my surprise, both my and my friend’s dishes came with a side of potato salad, which was also very good. I would definitely come back again.

Google
Visited my sister who lives in Queen Village over the weekend and came here for breakfast three mornings in a row! Food was incredible, one of the best BEC I’ve had. The space is small but we were always able to grab a seat to enjoy our meal. Very cozy and inviting atmosphere. Can’t wait to come back!

Yelp
Come here if you want to pay big bucks for the rudest service you've ever experienced. A single sandwich listed on the menu board at $13 cost $22 w a drink. The person behind the counter asked if I want either chips or a side salad with my sandwich and implied that it was included. Then charged extra for it without giving me the option to not have a side. Monosyllabic communication throughout the experience. Rude and unhelpful when asked questions. I've been here dozens of times and it's been a favorite until now. I can't believe how awful the service was today Update: Thank you to the owner and the cook for being so nice. The issue was that they were out of potato salad and didn't inform us that the other sides were not included. The main problem is the rudeness of the individual who served us. She was clearly quite angry with us when we left so maybe resolving that issue with her would be the best route for you. Thank you again to the amazing cook

Yelp
I went here looking for their ancho chili hot chocolate but they don't have it anymore. Instead they had a few seasonal drinks. I opted for their mocha which had a nice consistency and a good balance of coffee and chocolate. The server had a pleasant demeanor and asked if we wanted mugs or to go cups so +1 for that. Not everyone asks that and I really appreciate those who do because I love having my coffee in a proper mug. Their ambiance is decorated with a variety of plants and felt really homely. Their food menu looked super extensive with lots of options - mostly sandwiches and melts. Maybe next time I'll try something to eat as well.

Yelp
I am not exaggerating when I say this was probably THE BEST bacon egg and cheese bagel I've ever had! 10/10 would recommend! Instead of using strips of bacon, they cut the meat into little pieces and scrambled it in with the eggs. The eggs were so fluffy. I had an everything bagel and the saltiness from the bagel plus the sweetness from the bacon and creaminess of the eggs made for such a burst of flavor in my mouth. I stumbled upon this place on an early Saturday morning when literally every where else was closed. The inside of the shop is so cute and cozy. Has a rustic feel. The workers were super friendly. Service was quick. Would definitely go back here again.

Yelp
My bf, his sister, and I ordered some light bites and got our caffeine fix before we went thrifting around the area. The food menu is pretty normal, but the seasonal drinks seems interesting. I ended up settling for a lox bagel and drip coffee. The bagel was a mouth-full, so I ate the top and bottom half separately. There's literally a centimeter-thick slab of cream cheese with thick cucumber slices that is way too excessive for a lox bagel. It wasn't particularly enjoyable since the proportions were off. However, the coffee was just right, and I did enjoy the ambiance. With comfortable seating and interesting art on the wall, I felt at home in an unfamiliar cafe.

Yelp
I LOVE THAT THIS PLACE IS SO CLOSE TO ME! Incredible menu, namely, the breakfast sandwiches and vegetarian/vegan options. The staff is super friendly, no frills there. The ambience and decor is retro kitsch which I love. There are even a couple places to eat outside when the weather is nice. I got a breakfast sammie with egg and vegan sausage with a side of potato salad and it was amazing! The portions were great! Will def return to continue trying all their veg options.

Yelp
Red hook Red Hook is a pleasant departure from the expected. The menu doesn't veer too far from your normal selections in a typical coffee shop. However, the moody, eclectic and warm environment is the standout. FOOD During my visit I opted to grab the honey vanilla latte. To be honest, it was decent with gentle notes of honey. The vanilla wasn't readily apparent. I would suggest nabbing another choice if you're looking for something with a bit more "punch" in a flavor profile. ENVIRONMENT I stayed inside for a little over 30 minutes just to take in the decor and I must admit there's a lot to take in. For example in the bathroom, (see attached images)there's a pair of antlers cradling the toilet paper directly in contrast to a photo of The Beetles. There's a fair amount of local art for sale along the walls of various styles and types. This coffee shop is a perfect semblance of the phrase "come as you are" because in my 30 or so minutes of visiting I found myself at ease. Happy sips!

Yelp
Friendly staff and cozy cafe where it's not too loud or crowded. Oldies playing all kinds of plants and things on the walls to look it. So many menu options too, they cater to vegans and vegetarians really well! Choose your sandwich, bread, and side. Lots of fixings, check out their online menu. I had a hummus wrap with sliced pears on the side, came out quick during lunch while they worked on takeout orders. I'm glad someone recommended Red Hook to me, would def come back.

Yelp
Made a special trip to this new-to-me spot in QV and really enjoyed my time! Had a 3 star experience during my visit, but I think we caught the staff here on an off day and that it isn't normally as chaotic as what we experienced. It was President's Day so lots of folks were off and looking for their coffee / sandwich fix. I will go back during a less hectic time and hope to update! A few things to note: + Music in here is a little too loud to work or study, for my taste. + Go early if you want something specific. Most bagels were out of stock by the time I ordered, and I ordered a sesame but still got served a whole wheat that was...a little suspect and not my first choice. Super dry (though the sandwich itself was bomb) and would have been nice to be alerted that what they told me they had available they did, in fact, have available. + Staff could not keep up with the orders that were coming in and it lead to a really unpleasant ordering experience. The team here was part gossiping, part taking phone orders, part handling incoming online tickets, and part taking our orders. I had some questions about the menu that ultimately weren't answered but a good lesson for myself to come better prepared next time! + The cold brew here was either way oversteeped or whatever beans they use are simply not too my taste. I LOVE a strong and bold cold brew, but this packed a punch to the point of being really unpleasant. Even when my partner diluted with milk it was more or less undrinkable and we ended up tossing it. All that being said, the sandwiches are phenomenal! My boyfriend had a breakfast burrito that was one of the best he's had and my BEC was jam-packed with goodness and Heinz ketchup was readily available - which I always appreciate. The side of potato salad is a nice touch and really good as well. I am looking forward to a return trip next time I find myself bopping around QV!

Yelp
Such a surprise for my first time at Red Hook. This is a very cozy spot, there is seating but not that many tables for groups bigger than 2. I ordered the peach breakfast sandwich on ciabatta and it came with a small side of potato salad. The sandwich was delicious, well seasoned, with a delightful sweetness from the peach jam. The veggie sausage was really good, I was surprised as a meat lover. The potato salad was full of non traditional bits like chick peas. I thought the seasoning on the potato salad was perfect to offset against the sandwich, but could have done without all the extra ingredients. The food came out quickly, the service was kind, and there looked to be plenty of street parking on a Sunday morning as well which is always nice. There are a couple small tables outside if the weather is nice.

Yelp
Stopped in here randomly for a quick breakfast and was really glad I did. It can be easy to miss if you don't know where to look. Inside, the vibes are really cute and quirky. There's a lot of fun artwork on the walls. I ordered a breakfast burrito and blackberry latte to go. At first I was a little annoyed at the price, but burrito was huge and delicious and worth it. The latte was a unique flavor and I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first, but it grew on me. The service was also very pleasant and cheery, especially considering it was first thing on a Monday morning. This would be a great place to enjoy a quiet breakfast and coffee with a book- something I fully plan on doing in the future.

Yelp
Really cute spot on a cute street. Got a really great blueberry muffin here. AND when I was there, they were playing Glee music - huge green flag!!

Sarah B.

Yelp
Super cozy place with a chill vibe. The Red Hook melt is so good that it'll be my go to from now on. The barista was really kind too :)

Yelp
possibly my fave coffee shop in the city!! lattes are great, i typically get the spicy ginger chai latte (so so so good). tons of vegan and vegetarian options- i go for the vegan chicken salad on multigrain. comes with a side of potato salad which is so good that i find myself craving it. food and drinks always come out quick, too. fantastic vibes inside- so cozy with a lot of seating. i wish all cafes felt like this instead of the modern trend i see in new coffee shops. brick walls with a bunch of window seating and a ton of local art on the walls. i literally go all the way to queen village just to go here- highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Actually the cutest and gayest coffee shop. Delish coffee and mofo bagels this bitches are definitely home made bagels. Corner window seat is superior for people watching definitely worth the wait for a bagel sammy
google avatar

Lia M.

Yelp
This funky cafe serves really good food and coffee in Queen Village. I ordered an iced latte and a Red Hook sandwich for breakfast. I was famished and the sandwich was so big that even I couldn't finish it, despite how delicious it was. Latte was good too. Staff was friendly and it's a cute place. I look forward to returning.
google avatar

Yelp
Killer playlist, awesome service, chill atmosphere. The seasonal flavor coffee was excellent (tried both Maple Rosemary and the Sea Salat Caramel). I got the Shades of Egg bc other Yelpers recommended- it did not disappoint! It was nice they made without cheese for me. Hubby got the Breakfast of Champi-Eggs and was over the moon with every bite. Really loved the local art displayed/ for sale. Will be coming back while in town for sure!
google avatar

Carly M.

Yelp
Red Hook is an adorable spot! Great vibe, friendly staff and quality food/drink. I got the preacher man on an everything bagel and it was delicious! I'd definitely order again. It came with a really good potato salad. The glazed donut latte was also tasty, without being too sweet. Overall - great experience!

Megan A.

Yelp
Great vibes inside. Stopped in for a quick brunch and thoroughly enjoyed my latte and lox bagel
google avatar

Maxine S.

Yelp
thank you red hook coffee and tea for the "peacher man" sandwich that was delightfully made and served with chickpea-potato salad in a presentation much like i would have had at a family member's home. i was travelling and it helped me get right/stay full the rest of the day.
google avatar

Abby S.

Yelp
I'm sad to say on return here, my experience just was not as good as I previously remembered. We tried two different sandwiches that were so soaked in grease that they were wet and falling apart. The food also didn't taste as fresh as during our last experience. The side potato salad was just as good as we remembered. It's cute inside with an intimate atmosphere.

lily s.

Yelp
took over 30 minutes to get a bagel and iced coffee that was already brewed. when i got there it took almost 10 minutes to be acknowledged that i was standing at the counter waiting to order and all the tables were full of dirty dishes so i had to sit and wait that 30+ minutes at a table with someone's half eaten breakfast.
google avatar

Carly M.

Yelp
I got the Celestial bagel and for $7.00 --- wow! Affordable and delicious! Herb cream cheese, sprouts, tomato. Their bagels are fresh and crunchy and not "dough-ie". Highly recommend! They have all different types of sandwiches wraps and great coffee too! Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Yelp
my boyfriend and visited red hook coffee and tea this weekend and oh my goodness that breakfast of champion sandwich is SOOOO GOOD. it had soo many flavors that complement each other. It has a nice kick to it but not too much. Customer service was great as well. Great portion size. I will most definitely be returning. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Margaret S.

Yelp
Every time I order I get the same two things because I day dream about them for 4-5 business days after eating them. So good, quality ingredients, inclusive menu if you're gluten free or vegan. Quick, easy and simple to order whether you're in the cafe or on their website. And such a cute spot! Cozy vibes. Love love love
google avatar

Kisbel F.

Yelp
We were searching vegan breakfast options that were near Dottie's Donuts (vegan donuts) and came across this place. The boyfriend ordered a Vegan Elvis (peanut butter, banana, agave and vegan bacon then pan fried) and fell in love! It came with a side of vegan potato salad. Would definitely recommend to a vegan and/or non-vegan. It looked and tasted delicious (picture included for drooling purposes). I went with a toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese and bacon. Simple but delicious--I promise you. I was expecting bacon strips but it was covered in bacon bits so every bite was perfect! We were both happy with the choice and agreed it's definitely a spot we'd come back to when in Philly. Don't hesitate, just go! You won't regret it.

Yelp
Stopped here to grab breakfast on my way out of town and was really impressed! Staff was really friendly, service was fast, and food and drinks were amazing. They have some really fun options on the menu, I got the "Peacher Man" sandwich which had veggie-sausage, eggs, cheese, basil, and peach preserves on multigrain toast and it was phenomenal and a gigantic portion. Prices were reasonable too, we got three drinks, two sandwiches and a bagel for $30. We got takeout but the space was really cute and they had some gorgeous art on display from a local artist
google avatar

Jack D.

Yelp
Great spot. Awesome coffees. Good breakfast eats. Chill vibe. Friendly attentive laid back staff. 3 brands of fizzy water No OJ. Just bottled drinks. Add juice options and it gets a solid 5 stars. Cash only. Very reasonably priced.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this place! I came here for lunch with two of my friends and the food and vibes were immaculate. The style of the place was homey and inviting. Staff was all super friendly as well. I definitely recommend this place if you are in the area.

Bob J.

Yelp
This place is very near me. They have excellent food and coffee and I'm glad to see, as a neighborhood business, that's it's doing so well. I just wish the music wasn't so loud.
google avatar

Ameena S.

Yelp
A friend recommended this spot to me, and it did not disappoint! It was fairly easy to find a street parking spot on a weekday morning, and I walked up to order a coffee and breakfast sandwich. Highly, highly recommend the peacher man - it's a sandwich with egg, veggie sausage, and peach jam, and it was delicious! The coffee was great too. I'd definitely come back here again for coffee or takeout breakfast.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
I love their sandwiches here! I just had another today and it was one of the best of the many here that I've had (and I ate a LOT of it during the pandemic). They are fast, friendly, and always get my order right. The space inside isn't large, but the outdoor seating makes up for it. My absolute favorite is the Easy Rider Melt (especially with bacon. The vibe is chill and laid back. It's a great space to come and get some work done or read a book as well. Their instagram account is hilarious, and you can tell that they're not trying to be anything other than who they really are. This translates into a positive atmosphere among the staff and their customers.

Will W.

Yelp
Unpretentious, neighborhood cafe with great service, great food, and great coffee. The GOAT in Philly.
google avatar

Rebecca J.

Yelp
Very nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Great dirty chai! I would suggest not working here unless you have noise cancelling headphones, as the music can be quite loud. However, it's a great place to do work as the decor is really cute and I loved the artwork on the walls!

Rachel D.

Yelp
Great local spot. The coffee is good and I like their specialty lattes a lot. A couple of the breakfast sandwiches I've gotten have been a bit greasier than I prefer but I LOVE their shades of egg sandwich! It's so flavorful and such a large sandwich, It's one of my go-tos. I also like their tuna melt!
google avatar

Luke O.

Yelp
Great food with large servings! My go to is a half coffee half hot chocolate (which they do very well), but because it's not on the official menu I'm charged differently every time. The potato salad always taste different, but it's always good and it makes me think they buy fresh local produce available to put into their food.

Renee B.

Yelp
I love red hook. I order very frequently and always purchase a side order of extra sauce for .50. I ordered two this time and got a teaspoon of each sauce, I'm not sure why it's never consistent. I feel ripped off paying for this sauce.

Joan Q.

Yelp
Really tasty food. I had the egg salad sandwich with a side of potato salad. Interesting, flavorful and fresh. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Holly B.

Yelp
Quiet little Cafe with lots of character and charm! We had breakfast here while visiting Old Town Philadelphia and were pleasantly surprised!! I eat a Gluten Free, Vegan diet and avoid Oats as well. The staff were knowledgeable and very accommodating to my dietary needs and the breakfast was delicious!! I ordered Breakfast Tacos with a couple adjustments, no egg add tofu sauce, with no toasting to prevent cross contamination (their suggestion). This was a great start to our day and affordable! Oh by the way, they are a Cash Only establishment with an ATM on site.
google avatar

Molly G.

Yelp
BEST SANDWICHES EVER. The gluten free bread options alone would keep me coming back but the sandwiches themselves are incredible. Love the sides of potato salad and plan to try a salad soon. The online order and window pickup makes it the perfect lunchtime order spot. Knocked off 1 star because I'm not a huge fan of their latte flavors and wouldn't come here for only a drink, but the quality of food makes up for it.
google avatar

Isaac A.

Yelp
You could say I'm hooked... thank you for indulging me with that terrible pun. Cash only!! But they do have an ATM inside - not a big deal just be aware. Ambiance: + Exposed brick, art on the wall + Nice music playlist to fit the chill relaxed vibe - also not very loud so found it ideal for work Food: + Vegan friendly - ordered the vegan curried chicken + Huge portions of food - almost wish I did sandwich soup combo because half the sandwich was plenty
google avatar

Andy M.

Yelp
This is my go-to place for breakfast in Queen Village. Consistently delicious sandwiches and some of the best cold brew I've ever tasted at very reasonable prices. The Peacher Man is a consistent favorite but the Lil' Goat and breakfast burrito are also yummy. I'm writing this as I stuff my face with yet another SEC.
google avatar

Nat M.

Yelp
This was my first time eating at this establishment and I loved the CAT bagel sandwich. The tempeh was yummy but was not crunchy. I'd love to return to try other options. They do serve eggs and chicken for people who prefer those options. They have coffee, teas, and hot chocolate as a few of their drink options.

Yelp
I'm trying really hard to not let one bad apple ruin the bunch, but let me tell you about that apple: I came in one Saturday morning, having strolled around the neighborhood and saw this place. Grabbed a menu and brought it home. It looked like they had a lot of vegan and gluten free options and even encourages you to customize the menu, so my roommate and I decided to order dinner from here! We called 1 hour to close (we live a few blocks away) and while I can't remember what she ordered, I know that I got the BLT + A. Everything was fine and dandy until we got there and realized it's cash only (I know, I'm one of those people but it's 2017! Come on!) So my roommate goes to take out cash and I noticed the bill was incredibly high. I asked to look at the receipt and see we were charged an EXTRA $2 for EACH sandwich for the avocado. I asked the woman at the front what that was for, and she pointed to a sign on the counter that said that avocado would be a $2 upcharge because of demand or something like that. So, let me tell you that both sandwiches are ALREADY made with avocado, with mine having "avocado" in the name. How are you going to charge $2 for a few slices of avocado on a $6 sandwich? That makes no sense. I would understand if I added avocado to an existing sandwich that didn't already have one, but the $6 price already reflects the cost of the avocado. My second qualm here is that when we called, WE WERE NEVER TOLD OF THE UPCHARGE! I would have gotten something else with no issue. When both of these points were raised to the extremely rude worker at the front, she scowled and gave myself and my roommate and attitude. I asked for the manager and she said that they were not there and "even if they were here, they would say the same thing." Words cannot describe how incredibly rude this woman/girl...I'll call her a girl...was to us. No "I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. Unfortunately this is our current policy. I'd be happy to remove the avocado for you if you wouldn't like to pay" or anything pleasant of the sort! We left without the food. So that was the one bad apple. However, I decided to give it another try yesterday morning because I really do love gluten free and vegan foods. This experience was significantly better. I essentially took like 5 things off of the menu in other items and created my own "concoction" and they were very accommodating and helpful! They even made the thing look pretty, too! Overall, I think I will be back...just not at night when that awful person is there. Remember it's CASH ONLY, though!

Yelp
Adorable cafe with excellent food. Exposed brick walls with a gritty feel yet the cuisine is clean, crisp, fresh, and delicious. Super vegan friendly with extraordinary cafe fare! I got the Vegan Curried Chicken Salad Wrap. Contrra with lettuce, tomatoes, cranberries, carrots, onions, avocados on a wheat wrap. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!! Paired with a side of Vegan/Gluten Free Potato Salad this was an excellent lunch. They offer melts, soups, sandwiches, sales, breakfast, and wraps. Awesome. GO HERE!

Yelp
Having stopped in for lunch, I want to update my previous review and offer the highest praise to their egg salad sandwich. With L/T on a rugged multigrain bread, it's hands down the best egg salad I've ever had. They have a nice style with every food item, nothing is taken for granted, just as they didn't do a routine egg salad. Yes, comes with the horse radishy potato salad, yum. Excellent coffee, semi-friendly baristas - what more could you want? As mentioned, I particularly like their potato salad, check it out, it comes with sandwiches but I believe you can also order it as a separate side order. Outdoor seating is a plus. Wifi and warm, quiet atmosphere (despite the many young kids that are brought in) make it not a bad place to get a little work done as well.
google avatar

Katie D.

Yelp
I got the Sweet Baby Bleu egg sandwich (but requested goat cheese instead of bleu) and it's was one of the best things I've eaten in philly. I cannot recommend this sandwich enough. I'm absolutely going back to this place again!
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
One of my favorite brunch spots in the city. It's v cozy and the food is great. They have a nice vegan selection and their coffees/teas are generally unique and delicious. The service is always quick and the food is always good.

Yelp
This has been a favorite spot of mine for the last 10+ years and I'm happy to have this a few blocks from my house now. It used to be my go-to lunch date with my dog when I was in school or on the job hunt , and both of us needed a change of scenery. Now, no more dogs hanging out inside but that's ok. I get it, we're not in Europe. :( The BLTA is just A-mazing. It is all about the perfectly cooked and huge heap of crumbled bacon so as not to pull out the entire strip in one bite. The whole grain bread, addition of avocado and yes the funny look when I ask for vegannaise but not Fakin-bacon is A-ok ! I love the lil side bowl of interesting grain or potato salad. My husband once got a breakfast wrap which to him was uninteresting and a bit dry, but since then he's snuck back without me for sandwiches--his favorite was something with peach jam and grilled chicken? I dunno. I keep going back to my fave BLT here. I love their iced coffee too.

Yelp
Can I just start with the lil side of potato salad that comes with your sandwich? Oh Em Geee, I've never had a potato salad quite as tasty - potato's, garbanzos, cranberries, mustard and just enough mayo to make it stick together. Now, if you told me those ingredients before I tasted it I'd probably say "eww, yuck" but luckily I was hungry this morning and was adventurous enough to try it and let me tell you "mmm, yum!". I mean even after I had my massive behemoth Shades of Egg sandwich (seriously, I HAD to share half with my husband, there was no way I could finish it). The cafe is cute, very homey, service could use a little more friendliness but overall, amazing food!!
