"Situated in a bucolic location on the edge of Salisbury Plain, this pretty thatched pub is made even more characterful by a hotchpotch of decorative touches. The generously flavoured dishes demonstrate that this is a classically trained kitchen using well-sourced ingredients; the Chateaubriand for two with chips and béarnaise sauce is a popular choice. Well-equipped bedrooms have private terraces overlooking the river, allowing you to extend your visit and explore the surrounding Wiltshire countryside." - Michelin Inspector

Stay Eating Out in September

"This charming thatched pub, set on the edge of Salisbury Plain, serves carefully prepared, flavour-packed classics. After the success of the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme, owners Guy and Britt decided to offer a discount during September too: get £5 per person off your food bill every Tuesday and Wednesday evening." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

Very good restaurant in a great setting. Staff helpful and proffessional. Overnight stay in a beautiful room with top notch breakfast taken in the pub. Overall a fantastic stay.

We had an excellent evening at The Red Lion. The five course tasting menu was five small plates of excellence. The star was the pork plate with belly and loin both so full of flavour. The service was friendly, polite and helpful. We stayed the night in a more than comfy room, strolling down the lawn to a clear trout stream and overlooking sheeep filled meadows. Breakfast was first rate too, I chose the Eggs Benedict. Home made bread, home made marmalade and lashings of coffee. What’s not to like?

Quite simply this pub/restaurant is so good and our stay so comfortable that it should be kept secret. The rooms are very comfortable and warm in a quiet location overlooking the River Avon, the food is delicious and the surrounding area emanates an ancient past.

We visited for lunch and were provided with excellent food and friendly service. This is a high quality restaurant rather than a village Inn. An interesting menu with all dishes very well prepared and presented. The home made bread was wonderful. Only disappointment was that dogs were allowed in the dining area. Would have been nice to have a dog free area to enjoy such good food in a restaurant of this quality.

We went as a couple with a friend, and had two rooms. They were both super comfortable, well-appointed, with lovely private terraces and spacious bathrooms. Great minibar choices. The Avon river, or a small tributary of it, is a stone's throw from the rooms and is absolutely idyllic with weeping willows, rushes, and a resident swan who seemed blissfully uninterested in humans. Beyond is a field of sheep. Overall, a lovely eperience.

Good location, just off the main road. Great service, and a good choice of ales. With the fire going it was a little too warm for my liking, but I wasn't sitting eating so that maybe the reason. Otherwise worth a visit.

Another great meal. Not cheap of course, but very good value for what it is which is some of the best food in the area coupled with great atmosphere and excellent service and hospitality: difficult to ensure in rural areas.
