"Situated in a bucolic location on the edge of Salisbury Plain, this pretty thatched pub is made even more characterful by a hotchpotch of decorative touches. The generously flavoured dishes demonstrate that this is a classically trained kitchen using well-sourced ingredients; the Chateaubriand for two with chips and béarnaise sauce is a popular choice. Well-equipped bedrooms have private terraces overlooking the river, allowing you to extend your visit and explore the surrounding Wiltshire countryside." - Michelin Inspector

Stay Eating Out in September

"This charming thatched pub, set on the edge of Salisbury Plain, serves carefully prepared, flavour-packed classics. After the success of the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme, owners Guy and Britt decided to offer a discount during September too." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

If waking up to the sound of birdsong and looking out over a trout stream appeals to you, this is it. The accommodation is first-rate, with everything you could want - quality toiletries, luxury towels, and an oh so comfortable bed. And a well-stocked fridge bar if you can’t quite manage the 50 yards to the pub itself…..||Treat yourself to Michelin-star food and an extensive and eclectic drinks menu - you will not regret it. Our favourite place to stay.

This was a revisit for us and everything was as good as last time. Excellent accommodation and hospitality at the Pub. |From the moment we arrived we felt relaxed welcomed and well looked after. Thank you. |Breakfast and Dinner both excellent with hood service from Daisy and unobtrusive but good oversight from Bjorn whose company we enjoyed over our stay.

The Red Lion is no secret but if you have the opportunity, make a detour, organize a special trip and go. The food is outstanding, the staff warm, charming and switched on and if you can grab a room, the experience (sensational breakfast) is complete. More specifically asparagus grilled with smoked almonds and ajo blanco was smoky and punchy while still letting the asparagus shine through. Courgette soup was salty with feta and punctuated with sweet tomato. A halibut main dish was cooked to pearly perfection surrounded by braised lettuce and a veloute that I could happily drown in. Add crushed jersey potatoes and wild asparagus and you have something so seasonal , so local and so very very good it brings joy to the heart. The food is prepared with such thought and precision that it puts many more celebrated restaurants to shame.

The Red Lion in East Chisenbury proved to be an absolute delight during our recent visit for a festive pre-Christmas dinner. Upon arrival, we were greeted with an atmosphere that exuded warmth and conviviality, enhanced by a gentle hum of conversation that gave the restaurant a lively yet intimate charm. Dining as a family, with my mother, father, and brother, we indulged in a three-course meal that epitomized thoughtful, refined cooking. Each course was a testament to the kitchen’s skill—flavorful, meticulously balanced, and satisfying without veering into indulgent excess. The dishes showcased a deft touch, allowing quality ingredients to shine while maintaining an air of understated sophistication. The experience as a whole was one of genuine contentment, made even more memorable by attentive service and the venue’s welcoming ambiance. We left thoroughly pleased with both the meal and the occasion. A worthy choice for those seeking seasonal dining with a touch of elegance.

I had a lovely January weekend break in a cosy and warm room, with friendly staff, a beautiful breakfast and set in a lovely location. The room had everything we needed and it was only a few meters to the pub for our dinner and breakfast. Very relaxing.

Today we had the most spectacular lunch at The Red Lion. The 5 course tasting menu was a total triumph. Interesting ingredients made the meal so delightful - however the execution of them make it truly memorable. The staff are amazing. Attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. They strike the perfect balance of being familiar and professional and know when to leave you to get on with your meal. Guy and Britt have created magic at The Red Lion. I’m manufacturing excuses to go again!
