I went yesterday to have a nice birthday celebration dinner for my mother. The manager, who introduced himself as John, was at first very nice. However, as he went on to the next table, my mother and I couldn't help but hear their small talk. John had shared that a stroke would be the worst way to die, as well as being in a nursing home because "they won't care about you."
I worked at a nursing home for 1 and a half years and let me say, I know not everyone has the same experiences, but I cared so much for my patients. As well, he shared that actually, it would be better if he got cancer instead. I was sitting next to my mom, whose facial expression dropped. She is currently in remission from breast cancer, in which she underwent radiation and will forever have the memories of her battle. There she and I were, both hurt as John laughed with the table next to us.
John's commentary was very unacceptable. You don't know what people are going through. My mom was trying to enjoy living another year despite her previous cancer diagnosis. John, may you never experience cancer. It is not what you think. As well, please think before you speak.
