"Big changes are coming to the former Red O space on Melrose, which once played a modern Mexican menu under itinerant chef Rick Bayless. Now the futuristic corner restaurant will turn towards Mediterranean fare, with an eye on daytime cafe basics and late night formal cocktails as well. The unnamed newcomer is already coming together by way of a slew of different folks, though an opening date and attached chef have yet to be announced. Apparently the main dining area will consist of coastal Mediterranean fare, and will have room for a large bar as well some private dining space. There will also be a daytime cafe component for coffee and French pastries, plus a “private parlor serving up highly-curated cocktails and unexpected moments.”" - Farley Elliott

"Red O, an upscale Mexican restaurant on Melrose in Los Angeles, is closing after nearly eight years. It was the first LA venture by celebrity chef Rick Bayless and became a staple for cocktails and Mexican dinners. Despite its initial success and being a reliable spot for dining, sales have declined, leading to its upcoming closure. Other Red O locations continue to operate in Santa Monica, La Jolla, and Newport Beach." - Farley Elliott

Only came in for drinks: Delicious Moscow Mule, great bartender, prompt but not rushed. Could see how this place would be an uptight pain in the ass if it were busy, and definitely on the overpriced side of expensive. Fantastic decor/environment.

The atmosphere was nice. The food was to die for. The salsa should be put in contests it's so good. I had the rib eye with the mole on the side. That piece of meat was so tender, juicy and succulent. I simply fell in love with this place. Great drinks as well. You want to spend your money here!

Lovely upscale atmosphere, perfect for a special occasion but you want delicious Mexican food (not your typical casual Mexican food restaurant). Our waiter, Rob, was professional and friendly and made a good impression. The food and drinks were delicious! Best skinny margarita. I don't know how they got tortilla chips and salsa to taste so good! The guacamole was very tasty and the enchiladas suizas were amazing! Worth driving in traffic for a meal out.

Great tacos, great sangria, great service, great prices! The ambiance was fun, exclusive, dark, romantic and delicious. The wait wasn't terrible for a Saturday night, which was great. We put our names/numbers down and went to a nearby bar for drinks first. The guac is smooth and flavorful.

I had dinner here with a group. The margaritas were wonderful. The service was very nice. I did not care for the food. The flavors were, to my palate, bitter and somewhat bland, rather than savory. I respect the desire to be contemporary, but for the expense, this was a great disappointment. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Food was delicious, IF you could afford it! I had the shrimp with yucca fried rice, or something similar to that. It was delicious and frankly was in my budget. I came here for a friend's birthday dinner, so I decided to order dessert, but the waitress came back and said that they don't have that anymore... Sounds ridiculous to me, to have something on your menu that is popular, and not have it anymore. So instead, they gave us 3 tiny scoops of different sorbets. Drinks are super yummy, but cost an arm and 2 legs. If you come here, make a reservation and be prepared to spend a fortune on small portions and drinks.

We usually eat at the Red O at Fashion Island, this was our first time at this location. As expected the food and service were both rally, really good. The down side is, like everywhere else in LA, there is no parking, there is always a wait and it is very expensive. That said, we had a great time and a memorable dinner.

Tried to overcharge first bill $436.00 the waiter said oh sorry some charges are from another table. 2 ms try $288.00 still wrong. Third try $267. Wow. I called visa next morning and the resultant ran my card for $436.00. Of course it will be disputed. I have copies of all three dinner checks they presented to me. Nice try but it always is a good idea to check your itemization before signing. Manager never came and apologized either. And he seemed like he cared before. Maybe the $$$$$ but not the customers so beware.
