Two decades in, Red Pepper still draws crowds for Chinese-American favorites alongside Vietnamese staples like pho. The Buffalo News lauds its throwback pleasures, and Buffalo Spree named it Best Chinese Restaurant in 2024—evidence of its deep local following and consistency.

Things have changed from the Red Pepper I knew and loved. New owners? 1. No Pad Thai!!!? What??!! They offered (and I ordered) something "similar' but it truly pales in comparison. Bland. I had to put Spring Roll sauce on it to spice it up. The spring rolls are good. To be fair, I will go again to try a different dish, but for me: sadness. The wait staff is wonderful, the food fresh.... but it is much less thrilling than before.

Google
Went to Buffalo for shopping from Toronto and stopped by this Chinese and Vietnamese restaurant. Definitely catered for more western tastes. Decor a bit dated. We both ordered the pho and it was pretty average. Asked for the bean sprouts to be cooked but was recommended not to.

Google
Food was really good and our waiter was very helpful with suggestions. The full pot of oolong tea, oranges on the plates and a small place of cut oranges after the meal was a nice touch!

Where do I even begin? This place is phenomenal. The quality of food and service is excellent. Martin and Mike are just beyond wonderful and care so much about the experience you have. We ordered family style and I’m so glad we did because we were able to try a variety of things. Our favorites were ginger chicken and hunan chicken. Food was top notch and we had a great evening. We also frequently do takeout here which is equally delicious. Highly recommend.

Google
We usually visit here, as we live out of town now. Hot and sour soup was disappointing though ( I think they changed their recipe). Service is always excellent. Atmosphere is No Frills however they do use tablecloths which is a nice touch. A little pricey.

Google
Very authentic Chinese restaurant. Had general tso chicken lunch special edition with egg drop soup and pork fried rice. Liked their complimentary Oolong tea as well!

I disregarded the negative view I read and I thought I would give it another try. I ordered Sesame chicken, which was about 20% chicken and the rest was dough. It looked delicious and the sauce was very flavorful. Unfortunately, I prefer chicken with my sesame and chicken. What a disappointment this place is. It could’ve been a five star. don’t waste your time!

Google
Fantastic food. The prices are a little higher then other Chinese restaurants, but the quality is high too. It's one of the best Chinese places in Buffalo.

Yelp
Took it to go Food was excellent, fresh and lots of great different flavors. Prices were fair for the amount of food we got. Food was ready in 15 mins after ordering. Didn't really see the inside much, just went to the counter to order.

Yelp
Chinese food is probably last on the food chain that I eat. But the family loves it, so thank God for Red Pepper as they are the only spot I will eat Chinese from. This is not your normal corner store Chinese food. Everything is so fresh and with so much flavor. You can also get Vitemanease food, which I have to assume is very authentic as it is so good too! Like to order the lunches specials for dinner because there portions are very large, this help keep down on our waste. Go to favorite is the general Tso, and always asked for extra sauce as you could drink this sauce..just the right spice level with perfectly cooked chicken. The lunch specials come with choice or soup, white or pork fried rice. The egg drop soup is delicious. Great flavor with three big dumplings in it. The hot and sour soup is my favorite though. I love spicy foods and this hits on the spice and flavor just the way I like it with an equally amount of sour! Switched on my dish today and got the hot and spicy beef. Again flavorful, fresh veggies seasoned perfectly. Have not had a bad dish from them yet. I have had better pork fried rice BUT there's is very good and goes well with the dishes. Cute spot. Friendly front desk. They do get busy, just an FYI

Yelp
Red Pepper has a nice dining room with white table cloths. There is a parking lot in front and the back of the restaurant with door in both sides. We enjoyed the won ton soup and fried rice which were choices in the lunch menu. The chicken is all fresh cut in house as we saw into the kitchen on the way to the restroom. The chicken was tender in both dishes, but the moo goo guy pan did not have much flavor. The General Tso was good with large battered pieces of chicken, but the dish was just the chicken and peppers ; no broccoli like I am accustomed to having with this dish. The lunch was good, the place was clean and had good service. We appreciated the parking lot , nice dining room and the pot of green tea that was brought to our table for us to enjoy.

Yelp
Congratulations to Red Pepper for being named the best Chinese restaurant in 2024 by Buffalo Spree Magazine! For the longest time I only ordered pho soup, so I must have missed out. Oh, well... However, this time again I couldn't choose anything other than the #9 from the Vietnamese menu. I wanted the same seafood pho I fell in love with a long time ago. Unfortunately, I now have to say that Red Pepper no longer satisfies my craving for seafood pho. The broth was very basic and tasted flat, no surprise. The assortment of seafood sometimes made up for the rest, but it didn't work for me again. Nothing had changed since I had the Cambodian Style Rice Noodle Pho Soup last time, only the price went up, which is understandable. My partner's House Special Pho had much more tasty and flavorful broth. He actually enjoyed his soup a lot, as always. I saw him having all kinds of good looking beef meat and beef parts. We both finished our bowls. Nothing was left. The rice noodles were very good. The wait staff is energetic and focused. Everything is quickly on the table. The owner always shares a smile.

Yelp
Red Pepper Chinese & Vietnamese is a solid, family-friendly spot in Amherst that has been serving great food for 23 years--and their consistency shows! I picked up lunch on Lunar New Year 2025, and everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. The service has always been great although I didn't eat in so I couldn't say too much this time around. We had the General Tso's chicken (which is a bit different from most places since it includes red peppers in the sauce), chicken fried rice, beef and broccoli, egg drop soup, wonton soup, and vegetable lo mein. Each dish was tasty, and you can tell they use quality ingredients. The portions were generous, and everything came out hot and fresh. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere. While nothing particularly stands out as extraordinary, Red Pepper's reliability and dedication to quality make it a great go-to for Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine. I appreciate that it's family-owned and has remained consistent for over two decades--definitely a place worth supporting! Will be back again.

Yelp
We visited on a very busy Friday at 6pm, but were seated quickly. Each table has a fresh tablecloth, and cloth napkins. There were no chopsticks offered, just a fork and spoon. We ordered fried dumplings, spring rolls, and #7 House Special Pho. Tea and water were complimentary, as well as fried noodles and duck sauce. Our service was efficient, especially considering how busy they were. The food came out quickly, especially the yummy fried dumplings. The portion of Pho was huge and delicious. The spring rolls were a bit disappointing, as there was not much pork in them. There is a plate of cut up orange and fortune cookies placed on each table at the end of your meal. This restaurant is consistently good, and very popular. Parking can be problematic.

Yelp
We were greeted and the waiter brought over water and a pot of hot tea an fried noodles with duck sauce. We ordered orange chicken that was crunchy on the outside and moist and tender inside and the sauce was delicious, it came with white rice, and we also had egg noodles with beef, onions, peppers, that was my favorite, since I love thin noodles, I also had an egg roll, the tables were set up beautifully with. Goblets, cloth napkins, and silverware, the restaurant, the setting and the service was outstanding. I really enjoyed my meal

Yelp
3.5 This is a decent place to get takeout. The food was ready when it was supposed to be, everything was in the bag, everything was hot and packaged nicely, and they even added in the wonton strips. We got the chicken lomein, vegetable dumplings, hot and sour soup, and the Hong Kong two style. The food was pretty good but I do wish it had a little more flavor. Although the hot and sour soup did have a very strong kick to it. I do think this is a reliable takeout place but I do think they could make some small adjustments to make the food a little more flavorful. Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
This spot feels like you are eating authentic Chinese and Vietnamese food. My favorite dish is the general tso chicken. Robust flavors, with just right amount spice. There soup's are amazing. Nice portion size with tons of flavor. The egg drop is my go to. They have a nice size menu, so something for everyone. Reasonable pricing. Don't think you would go to a corner bodega or mall ever again after eating here. Highly recommend.

Yelp
6 years later 9/2024: same! Orange chicken still taste like sweet-and-sour chicken with red sauce! Very mediocre at best. And again the hot and sour soup was quite good. Apparently, I ordered the same exact dishes! But nothing has changed in taste. And the restaurant still looks dated in appearance. The service is quick. I guess they just stick to what they do. Nothing exciting or new to report.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch the other day, and so glad we did. The place was pretty busy, which was no surprise since they have a good lunch special. We were seated pretty quick. Service was excellent and friendly from beginning to end. As I said, they have several lunch specials and husband ordered one. He got the sesame chicken which came with soup & a large bowl of rice. I decided to go with the Beef Pho and ordered the large. Did I say large? It was gigantic! The picture doesn't truly show the size. It was loaded with rare beef, beef brisket, and tendon. My first time trying tendon. It was ok but probably wouldn't order it again. I'm more of a seafood person and will try that on my next visit. The pho was full of flavor and as I said, gigantic. I had my fill at lunch, and my leftovers filled 2 quart containers. Dinner! Overall an enjoyable tasty lunch. Can't wait for my next visit to try that seafood pho. 2023-125

Yelp
Food wasn't bad, but they don't follow instructions at all. If you order online it's a standard process of just send what we always send. If you ask for extra mustard, hot sauce, or anything else you will never get it. I ordered delivered once before I said I won't do it again, but I've decided to give it another try. Big mistake, as It was the same thing. They don't care about the customer, they don't care about the extras you asked for, and they do not respond. There are a couple other great Chinese restaurants, that listen to their customers. I will not be back.

Yelp
This was my first time here. I can't believe I waited so long to come here. We went for lunch and based on the full parking lot I thought for sure we would have to wait for a table but that wasn't the case. We were greated at the door and immediately seated. Like clockwork someone brought us a pot of hot tea then another person brought us chow mein noodles and sweet dip to munch on before our meal. Our waiter took our order and within a few minutes we had our food. I ordered the Sesame Chicken with Pork Fried Rice and Hot and Sour Soup. Although the Sesame Chicken was different than I have had in the past at other places, it was very good. Most other restaurants use pre-made heavily breaded frozen then deep fried chicken, this place uses fresh cut and lightly battered chicken. You really can tell the difference. We noticed one of the employees sitting at a table in the back of the diningroom preparing a huge pile of fresh green beans. He later told me that they only use fresh ingredients in all their dishes. This is rare these days because many restaurants are cutting costs by using "almost fresh" ingredients, but not here. I look forward to returning and trying other menu items.

Yelp
Incredible service, the serving sizes are quite large and their in house eating seating and ambiance is very convenient. Would 100% recommend.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in town! The garlic sauce is so good! Service is great, ambiance is fun family vibes!
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
It's one of the few Chinese restaurants that have waiters and table cloths. We appreciated that very much. The food was excellent. The ambience was excellent. Parking was convenient. Service was A+. Give this place a try
google avatar

Sara K.

Yelp
My new fave for Chinese! They serve tea and the crispies with dipping sauce. They give a lot of orange slices if that's your jam. I ordered the general tso chicken with white rice. It was so good!!! My favorite thing is that it was crispy on the outside! I hate soggy chicken but it happens a lot. I ate at another (closer) Chinese spot since this meal and I instantly regretted it and should have drove the distance for this instead. Can't wait to eat here again.
google avatar

Yelp
I Love Red Pepper! The is the best Chinese restaurant in WNY! Everything on the menu is delicious especially their Orange Chicken and Pork Fried Rice. Also shoutout to all the servers there who are the coolest / friendliest guys around!

Yelp
Authenticity off the charts!!!! Lunch here is unbeatable. First, a tea pot of green tea as soon as you sit down and cloth napkins and a packed spot. Got kung pao chicken and it was balanced and the perfect portion. A little too many water chesnuts. Fried rice was awesome. Pho was great but too much. And also didn't like that that beef came inside not letting me cook it myself. Sesame chicken good. Prices awesome. Will try again. Nice server.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been craving roast duck and this place has it and it's so favorable. Yummy and delicious. The server is super friendly and fast. The place is clean and it's a calm atmosphere. I will definitely come back.

Yelp
This is a 5 star restaurant! The sweet and sour are house made delicious and all of the food is of top quality!

Yelp
Red Pepper food is fresh and high quality . We have been loyal customers for years!! Big fans of the Vietnamese wonton soup !!!

Yelp
Stopped here for an early dinner on a Saturday, they were moderately busy and greeted and seated us immediately. The parking lot was a bit difficult to navigate due heavy snowfall over the prior week. The staff is generally friendly although there can be a bit of a language barrier. The interior is simple but pleasant, restrooms appear to have been renovated recently.I ordered the beef vermicelli #17, it is served in a large bowl with a fish oil sauce separately. I have had this dish here many times and find it difficult to order anything else I enjoy it so thoroughly. My wife ordered pepper steak which she also enjoyed. The beef vermicelli dish makes this my favorite Asian restaurant, other dishes I have tried have been very good but the vermicelli is outstanding. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
So impressed with the food and service at Red Pepper! From the soup to the fortune cookies, everything was delicious and I am eager to return. The restaurant is a hot spot for locals and I couldn't be happier with my experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Been coming here for over 20 years. It's delicious! The food is great the service is fast. I always get my food right away.

Yelp
Visited The Red Pepper last Sunday night. The restaurant was busy and we had about a 5-minute wait to be seated. The food arrived hot and in a timely manner, Food was tasty and plentiful. Waiter was efficient and all business. He was straight to the point, he did not make any recommendations. All in all our experience there was highly favorable I thought the prices were comparable to other similar restaurants. I would definitely recommend The Red Pepper.

Yelp
Good American Chinese food but average Vietnamese food. If you want more authentic Vietnamese and a better bowl of pho there are several others places to go locally. This place is always packed and the service is fast and efficient but the menu and flavours are muted to appeal to a more general audience. We had the chicken fried rice which had way to much soya sauce in the dish, shrimp and snow peas (which was also over sauced), some rice noodle stir fry and Cambodian noodles with fish balls soup (which lacked any flavour). The one surprise was they had snow pea shoots and the preparation was very good. Maybe my benchmark for good Asian food is too high but I left disappointed and hungry. If you go stick to the Asian dishes and use the extra hot sauce they provide to add more flavour to the dish. -SS I had some chicken fried rice. It had too much sauce and not enough chicken. I had some noodles with fish balls also. The noodles were good but the soup was a little bland. I also had pea shoots. They were very tasty and they were nicely seasoned. For some reason you had to ask for chopsticks. The service was pretty good, it was fast. The decor was nice I liked it. This wasn't the best Chinese and Vietnam food ever, but it was okay. -MS

Yelp
Hands down my favorite Asian food in the area. I remember going here with my grandma when I was young and it was her favorite too. The workers make suggestions and always want you to genuinely enjoy your food. The food tastes fresh and inspires me to never settle for cheap mall Chinese ever again. They box up your food right at your table and hype you up about your leftovers. I honestly enjoy the old time Chinese restaurant vibe just for nostalgias sake. Love this place!

Stan C.

Yelp
The service was good the price was way too high for the quality of the food the flavor was at best Mediocre i would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I'm still looking for an Excellent Chinese restaurant in western New York.
google avatar

Leah R.

Yelp
The best Chinese food in the area hands down. I have always gotten takeout, never dined in. The General Tso's is top tier. Crispy juicy and delicious. Egg rolls are great as well. When I picked up yesterday the girl was so friendly and nice. We'll worth any drive.
google avatar

Robert P.

Yelp
This place was amazing, staff was friendly and helpful with explaining the menu. It's a family style place meaning each person should order 1 dish a piece and it's enough for the table to share. the spring rolls were a nice size, everything came in a large size portion. Everything was delicious from the fried rice to the Mongolian beef but my favorite an absolute must try is that damn sesame chicken . It's everything from crunchy , to juicy ,to sweet n sticky. It's like that orange goodness just clings to on to the chicken for dear life and will just leave u thinking about your next visit! # Grade A # Not your average Chinese Restaurant, This place has been here forever and I see why!

Laur R.

Yelp
It's pretty bad when you don't even want the leftovers. We ordered some basic take out and when we got the food home, it was cold. The rice was old and almost crunchy. The sauces were lackluster, the chicken was overcooked, and it was an overall disappointing experience. Leftover Chinese food is one of the best things in the world and we don't even want to eat these leftovers.
google avatar

Donna Y.

Yelp
Excellent! We ordered egg drop soup, wonton soup, eggplant with garlic sauce and general tsos chicken - so yummy and the tea that comes with it is so tasty. I've been here before but never took the time to take pics and review - one of my favorite spots for Chinese food. Lots of seating although the parking lot is small. Friendly service!! The chicken was crispy and perfectly cooked, the eggplant melted in your mouth. I think I need to get back there soon :)

Yelp
This is my favorite Asian restaurant. My mom and I were in the area and stopped here for dinner. We were seated immediately and brought over water, tea, and crispy strips with dipping sauce. We wanted to try a little bit of everything, so we ordered Vietnamese spring rolls, rice vermicelli with beef, and sesame chicken. The spring rolls came with a great dipping sauce, that also accompanied the vermicelli. The vermicelli was well-seasoned and delicious, it also tastes fresh with the great toppings, like cilantro. I also loved the sesame chicken, which was more on the orange side, but it had great, powerful flavor to it, and it was crispy. The chicken was prepared well and there were no questionable parts included. The chicken was also served with white rice. We had ample leftover and split them up and each of us probably had an addition one to two meals each. Two was a wonderful and friendly server.
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
Excellent food! Very New York City style Chinese is the best I've had in Buffalo so far. Lunch portions are small, so if you want more, go ahead and order a full plate.
google avatar

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
Love this place! Has been my go to for years. Price is higher for what you see at other places but it's worth it. I always consider this place when I have friends who want to meet up for a bite to eat. Food is always prepared using fresh ingredients, comes out hot and always enough for leftovers the next day. I have had the same servers for years and they always welcome you with kindness and provide exceptional service. Very clean restaurant when busy there can be a small waiting time but it's definitely worth the wait!
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Delicious! Best Chinese in WNY!! I've tried a lot of places and nothing compares. A little pricier than other spots, but I guarantee you'll want to eat all of your food from this place. General Taos chicken and fried rice is the best!
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
I loved Red Pepper! I hadn't been for years, and my friends and I thought of it for our dinner date tonight. I got there first and they seated me right away, even though my friends weren't there. They were so fast to fill the water glasses and bring the extra place setting missing while I waited. I was impressed by how polite and nice they were right off the bat. I ended up ordering the steamed dumplings and the orange chicken. The dumplings were really good, similar to most other Chinese restaurants. But that orange chicken, it was so so delicious. I couldn't believe how large it was. I'm the kind of person who rarely leaves food on my plate, and I had half my dumplings and half the chicken left. The sauce on the chicken was amazing and the chicken was perfectly crispy. Definitely would be something I would order again! We all got boxes, and even the person who boxed the food was so polite. He couldn't fit both my chicken and dumplings in the small bag he had gotten for me, and I said I would just carry the dumplings but he insisted on getting me a larger one. So nice! We didn't have any drinks, but all the house wines were only 6 dollars, which is so cheap these days. They did serve complimentary tea when we sat down though, along we free crispy noodles with duck sauce. Overall, highly recommend going here!
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
Ordered pick up through Yelp yesterday and it went pretty seamlessly! My little guy loves lo mein and as we get closer and closer to holiday breaks and travel, I have less and less of a desire to cook at the end of the day. We got shrimp lo mein which was really nice. Not super wet like other places can be. I hate that, when it's all drippy. We also got steamed pork dumplings and they were honestly the best dumplings I've had from Chinese take out ever. There was exactly the right ratio of filling to wrap. Sometimes you just get a weird ball of meet surrounded by dough and not here. The dipping sauce was super tasty too. I will def be back for those bad boys. My husband got the general tso chicken and liked it. I tried to and found it to be spicier and less sweet than other places we've tried. My only complaint about it was that it was kinda pricey at almost $20. Might be a new go to pot for us!

Yelp
I had been dinning here since 2003. While I was in college and working two jobs. Both Vietnamese and Chinese cuisines are nothing but world class! It's definitely deserve more stars. Prices are very reasonable and big portions. Best in W.N.Y. in my opinion. This is the closest quality and authenticity to N.Y.C. The only thing I wish they would offer is Dim Sum. I always dined here twice a month.

Joey O.

Yelp
Amazing food it has a lot of flavor and good texture. The service is extremely fast and every 5-10 mins they refill your water. The decor is amazing pictures of horses, ships, flowers etc. best Chinese restaurant I've been to
google avatar

Andre B.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Great food, great service, big portions, and nice atmosphere! Shout out to my waiter, Mike! He was very attentive and very helpful with the menu. I feel like this restaurant is a hidden gem! I would highly recommend the Hong Kong Two Style. The whole dish was amazing, but those scallops!!!!!! I was dancing while I was eating!
google avatar

Yelp
Come for the Pho! or for the excellent service! or for a cloth tablecloth setting! or, for all of the above. Have never had anything here, either for dine-in or take-out, other than the HOUSE SPECIAL PHO: BEEF RICE NOODLE SOUP (RARE BEEF,TRIPE, TENDON, BEEF BALL). I realize this may not appeal to everyone, but it's delicious; comes with side of fresh basil and other add-ins. The difficulty with eating it in is that it comes in a large bowl which makes it difficult to cut the beef and noodles with a knife, which I find is seriously needed. Portions are generous. Have dined in with friends who have also enjoyed their more traditional Chinese meals. Fortune cookie at the end is always fun.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Love love love it here. The food is always delicious and hot. Love the crunchy noodles and sauce. The pho is just what you need on a cold Buffalo day, I wish they did dim sum!

Brianna M.

Yelp
The food here is delicious and the staff is very friendly. A warning the portions are huge! My husband and I split a plate and it was more then enough for us. We also loved how they serve orange slices as a free dessert. This will always be our favorite Chinese restaurant.
google avatar

Lindy R.

Yelp
The food is amazing and the service is impeccable. You'll always have enough for leftovers and it taste just as good the next day. They sweet and sour chicken is my fave
google avatar

Tina N.

Yelp
Went on a whim to try a new place and was disappointed. My husband and I ordered "spicy" beef noodle soup ( bun bo hue) and sesame chicken. Pros: it was busy when we walked in which is good for their business. We appreciate the oranges with our order. Cons: our food was bland. We've been to plenty of Vietnamese restaurants in Buffalo. Typically bun bo hue is pack with some complex flavors and different meats and this bowl was lacking in all of it. It wasn't even spicy. Sesame chicken was okay, nothing special. We're glad we tried it to know there are other places better.

Leslie F.

Yelp
Always our go to. Best Chinese food around. Service is great too and food is ready fast.
