Was recommended to this place by a friend. Had dinner here on a Friday early evening.
Environment: ample lighting, comfortable wooden chairs and tables, semi-open kitchen at work to be viewed by diners.
Service: generally attentive and friendly.
Courses:
-Cold plate of beef "lung" slices with sliced beef and beef offal. Not too hot, could taste the spices of Sichuan peppercorn, a bit too salty. Beef offal packed the right bite, not too chewy but had the bouncy texture. Beef slices tasted standard.
-Stir-fried AA Choy, standard.
-Dry-fried green beans, good, unlike the oily stuff served in some other Chinese places, here the dish was served with little residual oil like it was supposed to.
-Boiled fish in broth with Chinese style sauerkraut, a whole fish cut into pieces, served in broth with shitake mushroom, rice noodles, and tofu. Pleasant vinegary taste of sauerkraut in the broth, tofu and mushroom tasted standard. Fish was in generous but was a bit overcooked and slightly mushy. Could use a bit less boiling time.
-Dry-fried eel, could tell the eel was fresh as all the piece curled up during cooking and no foul, muddy taste was found. Seasoning was to the spot, packed quite some spiciness, but could also be fried to a lesser degree to preserve the bouncy texture of the eel.
Overall: 4-4.5 stars. While there are some points for improvements, having suffered for years from all the overwhelmingly hot "Szechuan/Chinese" dishes dipped in hot sauce and peppers in the Towson-Baltimore area, I am excited to finally see a place offering authentic and high-quality Sichuan/Szechuan dishes.
