"Red River Kitchen at City House, known for its stunning views of the Mississippi River, is set to reopen this spring under new ownership. Previously operated by Matty O’Reilly, the venue was sold to Lancer Hospitality as part of O'Reilly's efforts to downsize his business portfolio. The establishment has a history of seasonal operations, offering lunch and dinner from late spring through fall since its initial opening in 2016." - Joy Summers

Atmosphere was FUN and casual, with a giant Connect 4 game and chalkboards for the kids. But beware the BEES. They love the beer (cover yours with a napkin or risk drinking a bee) and they're not afraid of salsa (try the peach salsa - it's surprisingly hot, in a good way! The people who work there are fantastic. We came for the view (the weather was perfect) but couldn't sit on the patio without 8-12 bees joining us and trying to eat our food. Food was tasty! I had the pork nachos and my husband had a chicken taco salad. Just beware of a little extra "winged seasoning." The pretty little flower boxes on the patio filled with clover can't be helping!

Google
My ratings are low in service and atmosphere because this is a food truck parked at City House. The food was great and swiftly done but I just can't rate either thing any higher. We had a taco salad with chicken and a Cubano with house made chips.

Google
Lots of seating inside, several tables set up along the outside overlooking the river. Food was very good and easy to order from your table. Great beer selection and hard alcohol as well. Very friendly atmosphere and service. They keep up with keeping the tables clean! It states that dogs are not allowed inside but there were a few on leashes, including ours! Would recommend the fish tacos and quesadillas! The fried pickles are also really good and crunchy and not too greasy! They have their own underground parking lot on the street just above the restaurant with a staircase leading down from the street. As well as a few spots on the street.

Google
Fabulous summer spot with indoor and outdoor seating right on the Mississippi River. Drinks can be ordered when walking in, food can be ordered at the table using a QR code. My phone was on the fritz so I was able to order where one orders drinks which is nice (especially for those without smart phones). Food, drinks, and atmosphere were lovely. A huge plus is that it is dog friendly and they're were games that one could pick up and play. Parking may be tough to come by but this would be an ideal spot to bike or scooter to as it is right off the path along the Mississippi.

Google
Staff were very friendly, and there was lots of space for indoor and outdoor seating. Lots of different types of alcoholic drinks, local and domestic. The seats closest to the water are a little crowded but worth it. Very dog friendly. There is not a parking lot, so parking nearby is needed, and there are steps down to the City House.

Google
Great atmosphere on the river! The food was great but was very small portions for the cost. I wish the large barges were not up against the break wall because they are eliminating the view of the river pretty much entirely. But we would come back.

Google
I've eaten here several times and it's hit or miss depending on who's working the food truck. Seems to be new workers regularly and food order process seems disorganized. Always had the tacos and one time they were soggy. But love love the drinks and atmosphere!

Steve Moses

Google
Very good food, and what an atmosphere, next to the mighty Mississippi River. Great stop if you're on the bike trails or walking. Cars work too with parking close by. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Renee R.

Yelp
The only good thing about this place is the view of the river and the dogs that people bring. The taco salad was horrendous for hte cost and the vegetarian tacos were abysmal. Stick to a beer or a drink and forget the food!

Janet S.

Yelp
Very casual and extremely family friendly...nice location on the river. Delicious rice bowl with chicken, filling and fair priced. Excellent service, simple, no frills.

Michael K.

Yelp
Came here for a lunch date on a Tuesday and it was really lovely. The perfect spot for a bite, I ordered the Cuban sandwich which has always been good. My date ordered the burger and liked it! We got the cheese curds too but those got cold fast and weren't as good at other spots. We also had a couple of beers which was so nice, we sat on the patio facing the river. It was a great day overall!

Pierre P.

Yelp
Neat place I walk by often. Beer is good. Food is over priced and you don't get a lot for the cost. Ordered just cheese curds and they were $11 and you get like 15 lil pieces. Not satisfied. Shrinkflation hit this place hard or they just don't care to rip you off.

Oz W.

Yelp
This is actually a review for City House. If you're looking for a great stop along the St. Paul riverfront with a great selection of local and regional beers check this out . It's a large wide open space with flow through breezeways and riverside seating, perfect for the Covid conscious. They also feature no contact paying , plenty of hand sanitizer and never crowded. A little known out of the way place with a food truck that's a great way lace for a lost afternoon of bean bag and brews!

Ann Marie F.

Yelp
Take a walk, have a good ride, and reward yourself and your fur-baby with good eats and great drinks! I had the 3 pork tacos! Completely perfect! Shared a table, and the had the walleye po-boy. Said it was barely breaded, and delicious fish! (I'm coming back tomorrow for that!) Beers, ciders and other goodies round out the bar choices!! Credit card only. No cash. Bathrooms clean and fabulous after a hot walk. Get there early, snag a table... and just let St. Paul flow over you!!

Kate M.

Yelp
We popped by Red River after a nice long bike ride and romp at the High Bridge dog park. The staff was so friendly and uber accommodating! We had our little angel, Nino with but unfortunately due to an anonymous complaint the city has restricted dogs from being allowed inside. Which STINKS, majorly but they were quick to suggest handing out on a bench. They brought us a water bowl for Nino too. The food was affordable and delicious! I had the veggie tacos w/out cheese. Overall, great young staff. They were so friendly and hard working! They hustled which I seriously appreciate as someone who has worked in the industry for years. Hi five RRK; y'all are great and make hanging by the river even more fun! The good: stellar staff The better: awesome food truck/good The best: location, location, location! The view is incredible, so much happening on the Ol' Mississip!

Susan M.

Yelp
So I will say the location is kind of neat off the bat. Down by the river and if you get one of maybe 8 tables that overlook it, awesome. Otherwise you are stuck inside a large, open air warehouse-type place (technically I believe was a mill). It was well spaced out, mixture of picnic tables, high top tables, benches. A lot were a bit dirty and really felt better outside, so we found a picnic table out my the bike rack in the front. Ordering was quick and slick. Friendly service. You walk inside(masks requested), order and pick up drinks from the cashier, card only, no cash and get a buzzer if order food and pick up from the food truck outside. Very limited menu (makes sense, it's a food truck), but also because few things they were out of. I ordered the chicken street tacos and the fries. The fries were amazing! Crisp outside, fluffy inside, flakes of sea salt. Yum! I would definitely go back for the fries. The tacos on the other hand were the worst tacos I think I've ever had. First the cilantro was mush, dark, picked it off (why he put it on , you wonder...your guess is as good as mine, it obviously was past freshness date, it's a garnish for goodness sake, leave it off!!), second the guacamole was that mush stuff you get from a pouch (I get it has a good shelf life, but do you really care if you are putting clumps of wet, dark green cilantro on the taco?), third salsa was flavorless, fourth I found 2 bones in my shredded chicken, not fun! I guess I just expect a bit more for 5 bucks a taco. The queso fresco and corn tortilla and lime was good....but that doesn't say much. If I went back. I'd have my friend head in and scope out the table situation, grab us one. I'd place their order, order the fries...nothing else, not sure I trust it! Grab a beer and enjoy! Best part afterwards was taking a walk along the Mississippi and checking out the fountains, sculptures, skyline, bridges and boats.

Carissa E.

Yelp
Chicken tinga nachos! YUM SO GOOD. The walleye rice bowl, was not expecting it to taste as good as it did. They are seriously killing it in the kitchen! Fine dining from a food truck! I'm sad I went on the last day of being open. Such an awesome hidden spot right on the river. We went with family and our kids, it was awesome letting them run around play bags, chalk and hangout. I definitely want to go back for and adult night out.

Gina G.

Yelp
Calling all my plant-based peeps looking for a beautiful view! The plant burger is SOO good I was seriously worried I was eating real meat during the first few bites! My husband enjoyed a burger and an Octoberfest. The only thing we were bummed about was they didn't have fries. But I will say the kettle chips were really good! If the food and drinks aren't reason enough to check out Red River Kitchen the atmosphere is one of the best in the city! The brick building with a high exposed ceiling has cafe lights and plants hanging above and sits right on the Mississippi River. Its's the perfect mix of romance and chill! It's a great date night place. A few beers, burgers, pretty river views...We will be back!

Yelp
Red River kitchen is Saint Paul's answer to the slew of seasonal outdoor restaurant gems in Minneapolis, and from my two experiences here... It's a total home run. The location is beautiful, funky, and filled with charm. Nestled right on the Mississippi River, the building is an old, historic grain elevator. The atmosphere feels part museum, part brewery hangout, and part nature filled park. All the cooking is done in a food truck permanently parked out back. And that cooking is simply top notch. I've tried both the Cubano sandwich and the Mushroom Quinoa burger. Both blew me away. The Mushroom Quinoa burger was delicious enough to fool this usual carnivore, and topped with a buttermilk bun that was so golden brown and pillow soft it was heavenly. The Cubano was the true star though, IMO. It was so good it put to shame most of the Cuban sandwiches I've had in South Florida. Lots of good local beers on tap too. Looks like a few of the first reviews undersold it due to growing pains, but I can confidently say this is one of my favorite spots in all of the Twin Cities. 5 stars all the way.

Joe I.

Yelp
The address and the actual location of this place could be tricky. This is a food truck parked next to what appears to be an abandoned building. It's open seasonally. I was introduced to Red River Kitchen last year towards the end of the summer and had to wait all winter to come back. I've been four times so far this summer (all lunches). Location is fun food is yummy (I like their veggie bowl) and the vibe is positive. Their lemonade is great and they have a decent list of beers (which I sadly have not had at lunch). I hope to get here a couple more times yet this season. Recommend.

Alissa H.

Yelp
Loved the view and food! Had the Pork Nachos on chicken tacos. Excellent flavor not your typical toppings. We will be back with friends. Great place for families to gather.

Patricia D.

Yelp
Friendly...and dog-friendly...staff made food especially for Remy, my Cavalier. We ate outside of course. Gorgeous night. I don't understand the new no-dog policy. The place is essentially like any patio that allows dogs. Food prep is nowhere near where pets would be. I think the city is discriminating against Red River. Dogs are part of the fun. If you ban dogs there, you should ban them everywhere. You can't cherry-pick. Long live Red River! Keep up the appeal.

John W.

Yelp
Savory and salty and crunchy kimchi philly nachos. They were tasty but could have used a little more toppings for a bountiful pile of calories. Great open location for summer hangs by the river in the old grain elevator. Stop by on your walk or bike ride to enjoy the rest and unique spot hidden on the riverside of St. Paul.

Hilan K.

Yelp
The Turkey burger was pretty good. Not much to say about the tacos (very small portion and no flavor) but Cuban sandwich was fabulous. The sandwiches came with chips which I would have much more prefer to have fries instead. The place just opened this week. Clean restrooms, open space and nice staff. Only accept credit cards - no cash!!! Plasticware does not include knife? Strange.

Audrey M.

Yelp
THE best patio in the Twin Cities. I spotted it during a trip to Harriet park, and I had to find out what that riverside seating was attached to. It's a little out of the way if you're walking from Lowertown, but its well worth the effort for that view. the walleye bowl was life changing. Sage gin and tonic was...adequate. I'l probably get a beer next time, or avail myself of the free water. -1 star for its lack of wifi.

Michelle L.

Yelp
This veggie bowl was so good!! It was full of flavors and the right amount of spicy- corn, carrots, peppers, kimchi, white rice, cilantro. I like how the waiter didnt bring me any utensils- not being sarcastic. She told me to get it myself at the entrance. I liked it because I usually bring my own silverware to avoid single use cutlery. Atmosphere is quiet and chill- definitely a place to relax on your day off. View is also amazing.

Sarah W.

Yelp
The good: Fabulous river view. Historic building. Good service. The mediocre: What gives with Minnesota food trucks and restaurants putting tacos in cold tortillas? The chicken tinga tacos could be above average if only they put the tortillas on the grill first, until they puff slightly. The drink menu needs expansion. How about some iced tea? Some local sodas (think Lift Bridge root beer)? Why serve canned Pepsi? I mean, come on! The bad: Chips were stale, guacamole uninspired. Interior feels bleak at lunch. Should you go? Yes, if you're looking for a snack while biking or walking in the area or really value river views. I hope they up their game, as they are sitting on giant unrealized potential.

Lorraine N.

Yelp
Excellent place to go for a drink with a great view and chill vibe. Meet up with some friends and play bean bags. You can even take your fur babies. They don't have a huge selection of food choices or drinks and you can expect to pay roughly 6-8 for wine or beer. I enjoyed this place. Take your credit card as they do not accept cash!

Laura M.

Yelp
Such a neat addition to the St. Paul food scene!! I went with friends after noticing it on a walk along the river path. We got the walleye bowl, the kimchi philly nachos, and the kimchi veggie rice bowl - all really, really good and everything from scratch and local as always with RRK. They have a surprisingly large drink menu for a food truck operation - lots of local craft beer options which I always appreciate, wine, and cocktails. Next time I will definitely try one of their cocktails - they always look so good in their Instagram posts!! And of course, the location can't be beat. It is on the banks of the Mississippi River and in a beautifully restored grain elevator. City House is super casual and unpretentious (counter service only fyi) yet there's something so intimate about the space. Highly recommend and will be back soon!

Jessica P.

Yelp
Food: Kimchi Nachos & Walleye Bowl Drinks: NA (Beer & Wine was available... but only had water) Pros: Beautiful space. Open air. Great views. Spacious. Quick service. Cons: Credit card only. Limited chairs. Experience: It was a beautiful spring day with a light breeze... this location was a great place to have a quick dinner overlooking the high bridge and river. The food was good but not amazing. The walleye bowl lacked seasoning. The kimchi nachos were very delicious! Conclusion: Definitely would go back again!!

Emilie P.

Yelp
Chicken tacos- Kimchi beef nachos- We just went back and ordered a hotdog to try- I'm sure it'll be bomb! Great atmosphere- wish there was music, but it's close to apartments so I understand. Still a great place!

Kim C.

Yelp
I was in St. Paul for a week attending a conference for work and this was this first non-catered meal I had in town. There's a decent sized variety of items to satisfy everyone from true foodies or picky eaters (I fall into the latter). I opted to get their Cubano and some lemonade both of which were spot on and perfectly paired with watching the sun setting along the Mississippi River. If I ever find myself back in the area I'll definitely by stopping by!

Crystal S.

Yelp
This is awesome! Why didn't anyone think of it sooner? I love the atmosphere, that deserves 5+ stars! It is so great to be able to sit along the river in a cool, old, industrial, open air setting. The food was definitely good. Keep in mind that it is a food truck, so you are not going to get a large menu. We were there for a beer tasting from local breweries, so didn't try their drink menu, but a few items looked appealing (MN mule sounds fun). Overall; I love the concept and the view, I will absolutely be back before winter forces it closed!

Mercedes S.

Yelp
Nice stop while Biking great view of the river Awesome food so glad we stopped! Love the building Definitely a place to sit and enjoy the view.

Stasia P.

Yelp
Love this little gem! It's perfect place to gather with friends and loved ones. Drinks are refreshing and the food is delightful!

kristine p.

Yelp
Outstanding craft beer and reasonable delicious food. Right on the Mississippi. What a cool gem in St Paul!

Pat S.

Yelp
Love this place! Biked here and had the Elote dog and a beer. Extra side of Chips and salsa was just right amount and spice for $3.Beautiful breezes coming through the deck into the building. Staff is super friendly and make helpful recommendations. Credit card only! You can learn about St. Paul grain transit history and play corn bags too. Very relaxing atmosphere for a family and a dog (patio only-dogs).

Jan H.

Yelp
Restaurant sounds truly wonderful -- however, beware of their food truck. Total rip-off- $5 for veggies and dip consisted of 3 mini-carrots, 4 small slices of peppers, 4 small pieces broccoli & 1/8 cup of dip; then ham, cheese and cracker platter for $6 consisted of 3 small crackers, a small amount of cheese, cheese spread and a small amount of ham. 3 small crackers - WHY? Such a total rip off!

Sherri S.

Yelp
This location on the river is perfect and a wonderful place to gather with family and friends. The food is really good. I've had the walleye bowl and the green bean salad. I almost wish I could have a meal where I'd get a little of each of those. I loved the salad but it was a lot of green beans. And I really liked the walleye but it was a lot of walleye. We will definitely be back because we love the atmosphere and enjoy having a beee while sitting almost right on the river!

Sven W.

Yelp
Little shopping gallery outside seating Beer and food are good Perfect for a sunny day walk along the river Stop to get a beverage

Ray C.

Yelp
I really think I could eat the kimchi nachos each and every day. I will never tire of them. The distinctive setting in lovely Booth use really put this place apart. I bring all of my out-of-town visitors here.

Beth L.

Yelp
Discovered this place on one of those Best of articles .. and most water views in the Twin Cities are either busy Stillwater or crowded Lake Minnetonka - so being I live in Eagan - this Nailed it! Went on a Friday night with friends and scored a spot outside. I am all about the experience and i loved this experience! Dog friendly kid friendly family friendly ( they had bags for people to play) The kimchi nachos were very delicious! and The beer Ice Cold! Definitely a place I would bring out of town guests and will visit again! Thanks St Paul!

Marilee K.

Yelp
Seriously, no cash just credit cards?! How much more exclusionary can you get? Clearly you aren't interested in the clientele that only carries cash on their bikes or heaven forbid doesn't have a credit card. Was so excited to try this place and so disappointed to find they arent interested in having me or any of my cash only friends'.

Patricia W.

Yelp
I love almost everything about Red River Kitchen. The cubano is a 10 in my opinion. The quinoa burger and walleye bowl are also very good. The view and atmosphere cannot be improved. My only complaint is they will not run a tab. If anyone in your group decides to have a second glass of wine or beer you need to run a credit card again. Not a huge issue but sometimes this makes me feel like I am at a fast food restaurant.

Travis S.

Yelp
The City House on the river is great, but the food truck was a waste of money. I encountered the food truck at another venue but wasn't impressed due to poor service and bad food quality. Skip the food truck, but make sure to check out to the City House.

Paja Y.

Yelp
Love it! Me and my boyfriend were walking down the Mississippi River, we saw this place/truck and stopped by and let me just say it was delicious! My boyfriend had the Cubano and I had the quinoa burger. Everything was cooked to perfection. So flavorful! will have to come back soon! :)

Brooke H.

Yelp
I was very excited to visit Red River Kitchen at City House on the 4th of July with my parents. They wanted to eat a new restaurant where we could sit outside and tasked me with finding the place. From the website, I saw that the location was perfect and the menu looked delicious. When we arrived we loved the location right on the river, the outdoor sitting, and the wide open indoor space. Unfortunately, we had a very disappointing experience. The menu written on the chalkboard was noticeably shorter than what had been listed on the website. When I inquired about the Kimchi Philly Nachos and the Chicken Tinga Tacos, I was simply told " we don't have those but hopefully we will by next Wednesday." The remainder of the menu was very basic and just included chips&salsa/guacamole, nachos, a lengthy kids menu, and 4 boring sandwiches (grilled cheese, BLT, etc.). We opted for the nachos as we had originally been very excited for the Kimchi Philly Nachos. Unfortunately, these were very disappointing- chips covered in liquid nacho cheese sauce (which was not quite hot), a little bit of pico and a few jalapenos. This is what I would expect from a concession stand or convenience store, not from a highly rated food truck. Additionally, the waiter who brought the food merely said " if you need utensils or napkins, they're over there." While I would like to give Red River Kitchen a second chance, apparently after next Wednesday when their menu reflects what is listed online, I'm not sure that I will because there is no phone number listed on the website that I can call to inquire about the menu. All in all I was very disappointed with our experience at Red River Kitchen and I will not be returning.

Nhu N.

Yelp
The cubano sandwich was awesome! I like the thin bread, thick layer of meat and very good sauce!

Ken P.

Yelp
I'm pretty torn. I really want to like this place. The location is fantastic. Not only is it right on the Mississippi River, it's about 60 paces from our front door. Hopefully they will get better. They seem to have the drive to do so. If so, I'll update this review appropriately. As is, it just isn't too exciting. The Cubano is ok. It has all the right ingredients. Not pressed as I remember them being but it tasted ok. The turkey burger is, well, bad. Ours came raw. Not under cooked but raw. We sent it back and the chef said it was so unacceptable that he started over. What finally did come was charred nearly black on the outside and so salty we couldn't eat it. They gave us a free glass of wine to compensate, but I still had to go home and find something for dinner. That after I paid some $30. So, we are really hoping they get the kinks worked out. Amazing spot to put an amazing food truck. Now all they need is the amazing food truck. Came back for the fourth time. Tried the andouille sausage with jambalaya sauce. Sounds good, right? Threw away the meal as it was so spicy it could not be eaten. The server said when she brought it, if you really hate this let us know and we will work something out. If you know it's so bad, why is it on your menu? Maybe we will try again next year but we are done for this year.

Jay W.

Yelp
Excellent fish tacos, they were tasty, with tender fish and veggies. The view of the river and the mellow and fun atmosphere were terrific. We will be back hoping for more great food.

Adam I.

Yelp
Came here on a cooler summer day. Knew nothing about it before arriving, it being suggested by a friend. Obviously a popular local spot, as there was a decent line for a Sunday afternoon. The menu was easy to read and gave good number of options without being overwhelming. I opted for some tater totes and my companions got some salads and sandwiches. The food was made pretty fast and it was nice having the option to take it with us or eat on site. Unfortunately, the on site choice is pretty sparse and is very dependent on good weather. While good on a nice day, I can't imagine enjoying myself in cooler climes. The food I had (and tasted of others) was fine but didn't blow me away as being special in any way. Ultimately, a neat little place to try, for nothing else besides the creative drinks - and they did have really interesting sounding options - but not one I'd revisit with any regularity.

Lesley M.

Yelp
This is probably my new favorite summer patio place. Have you ever had the best Cubano and watched a tugboat parallel park a barge? I have. It was awesome. I can also verify that the chicken tinga tacos are spot on and the cherry rhubarb cider is a fantastic paring with both.

Mat S.

Yelp
Loooove the Cubano. This place is our go-to in the summer. My only complaints are the single line, and lack of selection for beers/wine/cocktails. I'm not expecting much. But 3 of each is narrow. Also, expanding to have a drink line and a food line would be awesome (like Sea Salt), so you can have a drink while waiting in line for that delicious Cubano and Kamichi Nachos!

Ian B.

Yelp
Red River Kitchen was sold and the new business has been renamed City House - the name of the building itself. It's still a food truck business, operating in the same empty brick warehouse. A welcome feature is that dogs are allowed inside, if on a leash and their behavior is under control. The food, however, has suffered. There is less variety, and the cooking is amateurish. The rice bowl, for example, was a greasy pile of fried rice, strips of flavorless bacon, and a couple of cooked carrots dumped on top in a cardboard tray. Music blares from the food ordering end, and there is no table service. This is a nice place to have a cold beer after a walk along the river, but the food is not the reason to spend time there.

G S.

Yelp
This place is perfection! The open air setting in a restored grain elevator along the river is summery, casual cool, and inviting. The food was so good! We had a cubano and kimchi philly nachos. YUM!!! My gin and tonic was also really good. The restaurant is right on the walk path along the river, so after dinner we went for a stroll. Love the location! They were a little slow bringing the food out, but they offered us something to drink or a dessert as compensation, which we declined, but it was a nice gesture. I love this place and I will go back!

Ron L.

Yelp
I had the Cubano sandwich, and it was one of the best I have ever had. The ham was tender, fall off the bone chunks full of flavor. The mustard and pickle complimented the meat rather than dominated. After losing the Tin Fish, I am hopeful this one will prosper, as I expect to return many times.

Debra D.

Yelp
This is a Fantastic place to go for summer dining! The food is amazing especially the Cubano. The gin and orange blossom tonic is delicious. Great views of the river and St. Paul. Service is excellent! The menu is limited currently because the city shut off the water of the warehouse because of the rising water of the Mississippi. They cook the food in a food truck, so it pays to be patient. Just relax, enjoy the views or play a game of corn hole!
