A New Navy Yard Cafe May Have D.C.’s Best Breakfast Sandwich | Eater DC

A delicious scent wafts into to your unsuspecting nostrils the second you walk in, and persists, to no complaints of mine. I arrived at 9:20 AM on a Weekday and there were two people ahead of me in line and numerous people at tables either eating or waiting for their order. This is clearly the place to be! Polite and friendly employees. I'm contentedly sitting outside, on a bar stool, with my yummy black coffee, as I write this. If I wasn't avoiding sugar/carbs I'd "go to town" here and love every second.

Google
I love red rooster! Nice staff and very nice environment, I've went to Floyd twice now and I always make sure we can go get a drink and stay a while here! The coffee shop I work for exclusively uses red roosters coffee in our drinks and sell it by the bag. People in my small town love it. I always make sure to snag some random goodies and merch when I'm there!😁 (All pics were from my most recent trip this June, last two were from July 2024)

Google
I tried my first “cupping” and learned so much about coffee. The Red Rooster is warm and inviting, with two levels of seating plus a porch area. If you arrive after hours, they even have a bean vending machine outside!

Chelsie H.

Google
I do not understand the bad reviews. This coffee shop is so cute. I was greeted by a very friendly barista. I told her that i like my lattes super sweet (something a lot of baristas judge ;)) she assured me it wasn’t an issue and recommended a specialty latte which was delicious. As far as all of the over priced comments go i frequent Starbucks, Dunkin, 7 brew, bigbys and Ziggys as well as small mom and pop shops the prices here are the typical prices you’d pay except for for their syrups but i didn’t try those so i will not speak on them.

Google
Loved being able to try this place out, the coffee and the food you can't go wrong ordering anything from this place everything was so fresh. My friends got coffee grounds to take home and my caramel latte was devine. I also love the style cups they serve it in with the large thumb rest. I ordered a sweet potato grilled cheese and honestly I never would think to eat sweet potato that way it just opens my eyes to new flavor ideas. Definitely will come here every time I'm in Floyd because it's a staple. Lots of seating for groups or people studying both downstairs and upstairs.

Google
I’ve never had the opportunity to visit in person, but I mail order their coffee beans all the time and I can say they are a great roaster. They have a large selection of high quality beans and friendly, helpful staff if you need help with an order.

Rob T.

Google
Enjoyed coffee and a light bite to eat here while motorcycling through Floyd, wonderful atmosphere with friendly staff with a wide variety of coffee, drinks and eats! Located on a busy road, easy access with lots of parking! This could easy be a regular regular stop, can’t beat it! Definitely a must stop, highly recommended!!!

Google
I have to admit...I have never been to your store. I have a small Pack & Ship store in Southern Maryland. I was in my local Giant Food store and happened to see your coffee on the shelf. It peaked my interest because I am from Galax and it was good to see a local business from that area on my local shelves. Cant wait to try the blend. Good luck with your product. Nick G

Yelp
Signed up for the Friday morning cupping class at Red Rooster Coffee. Since the class was free, I had little expectations of the class ( you get what you pay for). Well we were greeted by Tiffany Virtue the head of Customer Experience and were taken to the tasting lab. I got to say that hour spent was the highlight of our trip to Floyd County. My wife and I learned a lot of how coffee is selected and blended to make the different coffee offered for sale. Tiffany dispelled myths about how we had selected coffee and provided insight that we now use in selecting coffee. What an experience and I haven't discussed the cupping that we originally came in for. Learned about taste, smell and processes once selecting caffe will enhance our home brewing experience. This is a must do for anyone visiting Floyd VA that is interested in having an enjoyable cup of coffee. Tiffany and Red Rooster Coffee, thank you!

Yelp
Rating only the coffee purchased through the Red Rooster Coffee website. Excellent full bodied specialty coffee. Web accolades for their coffee is well deserved in my opinion. Using website was easy and shipping happens quickly and "after" the beans are fresh roasted which is outstanding and a big separator from many of the other specialty coffee bean companies on the web. For my first order from this company I got their Funky Chicken (which I am drinking now), breakfast Blend and Old Cupa Joe. Initial impressions of the Funky chicken is an excellent nicely balanced cup of coffee with notes of Hazelnut. Very pleased with this coffee and cannot wait to open the other bags in a couple of weeks. If you are looking to up your coffee game than this is a specialty business that is definately worth checking out. They offer many regional beans that cover most of the major bean producing regions in the world at varying price points. They also offer a discounted subscription program for regular shipments which I am seriously considering

Yelp
We were in the area of Floyd, Virginia and at the recommendation of a local, stopped in. We visited in early January and the weather was bitter cold, so it was a perfect opportunity to stop in for a hot coffee. Easy to find, with a large parking lot on both sides of the building. The parking area was extremely spacious and allowed us to maneuver a truck pulling a car trailer with a car on it, no problem. We walked in and it was fairly busy with a good amount of the interior tables full of customers. We took a spot in line and quickly looked at their various swag. We both decided to order our standard vanilla lattes and were a bit surprised they did not offer almond milk, but they did have coconut milk, which we both opted for. We also ordered a couple of cookies for the road. We took a seat at one of the tables while our orders were prepared and visited the restrooms before heading back to North Carolina. Overall, this was a good stop but we would have loved the almond milk and the ability to order a 20 oz. coffee, they topped out at 16 oz.

Yelp
Really great grilled cheese, sandwiches, desserts, grab and go items (some of which are gluten free/vegan). The drinks are hit or miss, although I know their coffee is good. The chai I had was underwhelming.

Yelp
Amazing local coffee shop with the best coffee in the area. My oatmilk latte came with beautiful latte art, and the orange cardamom muffin was pretty good. Their syrup options are made locally and are also available for sale in bottles. I love the cafe seating area downstairs with multiple windows and lots of merch displays. You can also sit upstairs, but the upstairs decor is a little bare. Service is friendly, but during rush times, the food and coffee can take a while. Overall a wonderful coffee shop, and I can't wait to be back!

Yelp
After a very disappointing first visit, I decided to give them another chance. They advertised a very unique, limited batch coffee roast which I really wanted to try. I ordered and paid online for the bag. Later that day I stopped at the store because I was in town on errands. I told the young lady my order. She went to a back room and returned and said it wasn't ready. It still had to be roasted and ground! She said it would be ready in a couple of days and they would notify me?! I asked why wasn't I told about this when ordering and she wasn't sure. She said they would notify me when it was ready. That was 8 days ago. I called for additional information, the phone rang 10 times and went to voice mail?! As I write this I still have no response and no idea when or if I will get my (paid for) coffee. I hate to judge people but I can judge businesses since I've owned a few. This shows me that poor service with this establishment is NOT an outlier - it is the norm. I'm done with Red Rooster.

Yelp
The biscuits, cold brew, & service are all wonderful. I stop here on my way through town some mornings & I'm always greeted so nicely. Love how big the biscuits are! Cute little place. Perfect for taking yourself on a little reading/coffee date.

Yelp
Really cool coffee shop. Coffee is really good and sweet and savory pastries, and delicious breakfast sandwiches. They also sell an assortment of bagged coffees from Latin America, merchandise, and kettles and coffee tools. Everyone was very patient and friendly. All staff had a mask on while handling food and drinks too. Overall I really nice coffee spot to hang out, do some work, or just to grab coffee and go.

Yelp
Stopped in while visiting Floyd Country Atore to get some beans right from the source. We have bought their beans before where we live and enjoyed them. We also picked up a tshirt, coffee mug, some local teas and local barista syrups. We ordered an ice tumeric latte which was yummy!

Ej F.

Yelp
Perceptive and attentive front end staff, hard to say what's going on in the back ;p , good food, excellent coffee, a Floyd Landmark. Yes I will visit again!

Yelp
What a gem of a coffee shop. Coffee is delicious and so is my sourdough everything bagel with rosemary cream cheese Great indoor and outdoor seating with plenty of parking in the back
google avatar

Yelp
I've been ordering their coffee for awhile now and I love it! I was first introduced to their coffee through a subscription service where they send you different bags of coffee each month and this was one of my favorites . So glad I can order direct and get it straight to my house. Funky chicken is one of my faves. Orders ship quickly and are packed well

Yelp
The menu is expansive and the building/sidewalk feel is great. Walking in you know you are in a coffee place- love that smell! They have refurbished an old building and really made a cool space, especially upstairs. This is my second time here- first time was good, so when we found a little flyer for 20% off we decided to come down to see them again! The immediate staff member (no name tag or I'd give him a shout out!) was friendly and informative. Unfortunately it kinda went downhill ( reason for 3 stars) when we showed the flyer and they acted like they were doing us a favor- I felt very awkward and probably wouldn't be as apt to return. We stood our ground and they gave us the discount, but ugh. BUT- the coffee was really good and maybe since they now know the little brochures exist they will be less defensive moving forward. They have a great variety of selections for coffee and tea/matcha lovers. Ps. They have order ahead:)

Yelp
Red Rooster is absolutely a hidden gem of the SWVA region, and I'm so glad I made the trip from Roanoke. If it we're closer, I might just be back every day. Disclaimer: I'm not yet a coffee connoisseur. However, my pour over was delightful. I told the barista I like Ethiopian coffees, and although nine were available in-store, the barista recommended a wonderful Peruvian one instead. It was bright and acidic--just how I like it. The coffee was also served at a hot but very drinkable temperature, which I appreciated, but may not fare so well if taking your coffee to-go. The star of my breakfast was the local egg and cheddar sandwich on a sourdough bagel. The bagel was soft and tangy, the eggs rich, and the cheese tied everything together. Even without meat, this was an excellent breakfast sandwich. Last was the lemon blueberry donut. I was expecting a warm, soft donut and instead I got a cool, slightly crunchy one. This was a bit jarring at first, but not entirely unwelcome. The icing was perfectly balanced between the two flavors, and sweet enough but not overpoweringly so. It's not a reason in itself to make the trip, but I'd get it again when I return. Overall, this is a phenomenal little coffee shop, and I can see why it got crowded so quickly. If you love coffee, or just a great breakfast sandwich, I'd highly recommend stopping by.

Yelp
Everyone working was so nice. I had never stopped in here before despite driving by many times. I stopped in to get coffee for a friend and was amazed to see how many things Red Rooster has! Coffee, teas, pastries, chocolates, drinks, kombucha, oils, flavored simple syrups. I gave it 4 stars not 5 because I did try the lemon poppy seed muffin & a blueberry lemon biscuit and neither were very good but honestly the service was good and there's so many options that I'm sure there's going to be something I'll enjoy. So I will try other menu items- they also have breakfast sandwiches and such so I'm excited to try some of those and lunch items! :)

Yelp
Great place! While looking for a spot for coffee in Floyd, Virginia--I found this delightful place! If I lived in Floyd, I would probably frequent the Red Rooster a couple of times a day! Unique drink options, friendly baristas and a wonderful selection of merchandise (from Red Rooster logo jean jackets and sweatshirts) to healthy food products. Plus, they have a great selection of baked goods--including beautiful cookies! The barista mentioned that those goodies are baked daily. Simply a not-to-miss place!!

Yelp
During our stay we visited Red Rooster and were happily surprised by the quality of their food and drinks, we had to stop by both mornings we were in town! Great prices, fresh produce and wonderfully kind and welcoming service! The decor and seating was equally great and created a cozy ambiance, we will return on our upcoming visits to the area!

Teresa R.

Yelp
Wounderful place. Great coffee and friendly staff. Oh and the pastries, delicious. Location right as you come into town, plenty of parking.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're visiting Floyd, make this a stop for breakfast and get one of their biscuits. Their white tea? Some of the best I've ever tasted. Had an espresso with one of the loudest espresso flavor I think might have ever had. Staff wears masks, which I appreciate since there is still a pandemic on. Interior space is chill and open.
google avatar

Thomas L.

Yelp
Great cafe run by friendly people. Each weekend they have specialty pastries available for order. You can order these ahead for pickup on Saturday. It's definitely worth it. There is plenty of parking, and customers will find both indoor and outdoor seating, though not in great abundance. I think most customers do grab-and-go here. If you like coffee and tea, plus the occasional pastry, you won't want to miss Red Rooster when in Floyd.
google avatar

Linda R.

Yelp
Nice spacious layout with plenty of seating. I noticed a staircase going up, likely to more seating. The employees were kind and helpful. Very good selection of specialty drinks created with homemade syrups, also, large selection of eats. My cappuccino with homemade firecracker syrup was awesome. I forgot to inquire about non-dairy milk alternatives. My husband thought his espresso was just ok. Each was served beautifully. Outstanding was the biscuit sandwich. The roaster is in the back of the building. One troubling thing, and admittedly it's minor: I noticed that the person who left the women's room right before I entered was an employee of the roaster. She left the bathroom w/o replacing the TP, extra rolls were abundant in number and in plain sight, but not in arms length of the toilet. The epitome of laziness on the part of the employee.

Jacob S.

Yelp
Fantastic baked goods. Loved the cranberry and orange biscuits. The ginger bread cider was inventive but my favorite continues to be the whole milk latte.

William W.

Yelp
I purchased beans of theirs through Trade Coffee and returned them because of a vinegary aftertaste they imparted. Since I never heard back on why that was the case, I would not recommend them.

Rod P.

Yelp
Excellent Latte and blueberry lemon pastry. Open when most other places are closed. Loved it
google avatar

Claire O.

Yelp
found these guys via a coffee subscription and my oh my, I cannot get enough of their Sakaro. It's the most perfect bean for my hot bean water and morning ritual. funky & fruity, just like me. please never stop making this one - it is a true delight! 1000 stars.
google avatar

Lauren V.

Yelp
Such a fun spot - great coffee and food! A little pretentious (sorry!!) and overall a bit slow. But would recommend and would go back!

Marinda S.

Yelp
Soon as we walked in they greeted us. Great friendly service and the place was as so clean and cute. Love the caramel latte, blueberry muffin and the pesto croissant! Definitely a place to stop in while in town!
google avatar

Crystal H.

Yelp
Friendly helpful staff and great coffee. This place is always super clean, efficient, and organized. They run different seasonal drink specials that are a treat. I'm not a big fan of sweet coffee drinks and they're always more than willing to adjust the drinks for me. We have an espresso machine at home and the beans held up well against our normal fav. I'm a fan!
google avatar

Reana K.

Yelp
Wish I could be reviewing this more fully, but due to the pandemic the actual cafe was closed when we visited. We've been ordering Red Rooster since the start of the pandemic, when we were looking for ways to support regional small businesses while also reducing our trips to the store - we couldn't be happier with Red Rooster! At this point we've tried over two dozen of their coffee beans, and haven't had a bad one yet. I prefer their single origins to the in-house blends, and highly recommend checking out what their seasonal offerings are. As for the cafe experience, you had to call in your order ahead of time, and then someone would run it out to you. They also had a little back patio space available if you wanted to stay there to enjoy your drinks. Ordering on the phone was simple, and the staff were very friendly. They even helped me find the right size in a sweatshirt so I could walk away with a little RR swag. Hope to visit the inside of the cafe one day soon!

Jaci O.

Yelp
I'll start with the coffees and pastry ordered were delicious- I'd give those 5 stars. However, tried to order breakfast and they were out of everything except the bagels to put stuff on and no lunch menu on Saturdays. The wait time was astronomical and then the pastry was forgotten initially. Being the only coffee shop in Floyd there is a lot of potential to improve and retain business. The cafe tables were dirty and hand off zone as well.
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Red rooster coffee is simply the best coffee shop around. Super friendly staff to go along with award-winning coffee.

Thomas C.

Yelp
the drinks are great, and my sister was in for breakfast and told me it was the best she ever got (!). the staff is super-friendly and also very competent. it is also youth-bohemian-central there, and adds color to an already colorful town, Floyd VA great place

Stacy H.

Yelp
The service and coffee aren't great. For the price point i would expect a smile, kind words of appreciation for coming in AND coffee that doesn't taste burnt. I think this coffee shop owes its success to the popularity and novelty of this small liberal hippie town.
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
Such an impressive local coffee shop. We visit a few times a year to Floyd for family visits and always enjoy stopping in and grabbing some excellent brews as well as stocking up on our coffee by the pound until our next visit. The coffee speaks for itself and baristas are always friendly and eager to assist.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Excellent coffee served in a variety of ways. A must visit for real coffee enthusists. The food is very good quality but not the best for non vegetarian eaters. Will definitely go out of my way to stop here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Wowsie! For a person who lives where there is a Starbucks on what seems like *every* corner (literally we have them everywhere we live) and a host of coffee shops as well as specialty tea places....Red Rooster in the one stop light town of Floyd rivals these places and blows most coffee places I have been to away! The daily made food is not only spot on but the coffee is an enthusiast's delight. And while visiting always a go to spot. Or should I say, a MUST. Even writing a review the smell and taste of the coffee is in my mind. Though I only get to visit Floyd this location I find to be welcoming as the people. It has a great vibe and offers a great little gift section without over doing the ketch. Again...a great place to sit relax and enjoy some conversation.
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
This place was exceptional! When you walk in the decor is extremely well done. It's definitely a modern hipster eclectic mix with wood and tile and metal chairs. Was very inviting to stay and hang out and drink a coffee/cappuccino. We were greeted immediately with friendly and smiley faces. Our cappuccinos were delightful. I absolutely love their logo and bought a T-shirt and a really comfortable sweatshirt. It was only $6.50 for both a large and a small cappuccino, which was a wonderful price. They roast their own beans they're and you can see the roaster in back. I wish we would've pick up some beans to go. You can totally tell that they take pride in their coffee shop!
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
Great coffee and pastries! Sweet ambiance. Great service too! Good place to stop in Floyd
google avatar

Ann T.

Yelp
Enjoyed this local coffee roaster and cafe for breakfast. We plan to go back again tomorrow. (Not many breakfast options in Floyd and even less before 10AM.) The coffee was excellent and the food delicious. The ambiance is exactly what we were looking for. Since it's a small town, it didn't have all the breakfast choices listed because they had already sold out for the day. Great place to stop while in Floyd to pick up gifts.
google avatar

Cassie P.

Yelp
Oh baby! The smell of something ridiculously delicious coming out of the oven greet you as you walk into the Blackwater Loft, and that's just the smell! Fantastic pastries and locally baked sourdough bagels (in house made cream cheeses!) are the perfect complement to Red Rooster's coffee. The baristas are knowledgable and friendly, whether you order a pour over or a seasonal custom made drink - they've got you covered. My go to coffee house for life!

Emma B.

Yelp
Got a chocolate orange marzipan latte and plain latte both with oatmilk. Sooo good. Two scones: goat cheese and pepper (phenomenal) and cranberry thyme feta. Total price was around $20. Very happy with what we got but a bit pricey. Staff and visitors were masked, outdoor seating available.

Clark L.

Yelp
Coffee is always delish, but Since I ride a motorcycle I have to stand around outside the building to drink, regardless of the weather.Hope they can reopen inside soon.

Marie B.

Yelp
Grazie mille Jordan for being the phenomenal barista whom you are!! Epic macchiato enhanced by your charm and special touch. Loooove this place, great Red Rooster roast, and your incredible being.
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
This was our go-to coffee shop while staying in a B&B near Floyd in Indian Valley. The baristas are very friendly, and even go out of their way to bring the coffee to your table. The coffee is surprisingly very good given the remote area, with a smooth taste and no bitterness. I would definitely stop in for a cup if you're in the area. I was going to pick up a bag on our way back to PA, but they're closed on Sundays!
google avatar

Logan B.

Yelp
Wow. No, I mean WOW!!!! That's better! This place has great coffee, but let's be honest the experience makes for the best cup o Joe (or espresso in this case). Ever single barista made my coffee experience great on this most pleasant of Saturday afternoons. A special note to Hanna on a wonderful and beautiful artistic presentation!!! And, to the tireless employee that ran across the street just to get me a bag of the Bourbon Barrel Coffee...bravo is an understatement! I cannot thank you all enough for your "southern charm". Until we meet again, Blackwater Loft, keep on amazing the public with your fine coffee works and your devoted customer service!
google avatar

Courtney M.

Yelp
The latte was impeccable. We will be going back before we leave this magical Virginia town.
google avatar

Tim N Kel D.

Yelp
If you find yourself in the mountains of southern Virginia, good coffee can be hard to come by. Red rooster stands alone as a wonderful place to grab a cup plus a great atmosphere. Big town coffee in the middle of a small country town.
