New Orleans’s Best Sno-Ball Stands | Eater New Orleans

"This year-round sno-ball stand is primarily built for to-go orders, but there is a picnic table out front for onsite slurping. The Central City stand opened in 1977 with just sno-balls, but has since expanded to po’ boys and ya-ka-mein (or yet-ca-mein), fried chicken and seafood, meat pies, and much more. Red Rooster is located near Al Davis Park." - Eater Staff

Where to Find the Best Yak-A-Mein in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Line up at the window (or now, order online) at the wonderful Red Rooster, just off Washington Avenue near the Magnolia Marketplace shopping center, and place an order for snowballs, po’ boys and of course, yak-a-mein. The soy-driven, salty broth studded with tender nibs of beef makes this yak-a-mein (spelled yet-ca-mein here) just about perfect." - Beth D’Addono

The food was delicious 😋 I saw someone post on Facebook & Instagram. Tried the red bean plate with chicken and stuffed pepper, mac & cheese. Only a little problem, try to be more customer-friendly when answering the phone. I had questions due to my first time trying to patronize. But I will return, the food makes up for the lack of customer friendliness.

I was so hyped to try this place out because of all the great reviews but I just ordered from ubereats and I’m so disappointed. ☹️ my yakamein tasted spoiled and it did not smell good at all. Idk if it’s the broth or the meat that spoiled or the egg cause it’s super brown. Never seen an egg look like that in any of the yakamein I have tasted around New Orleans. The crawfish nachos were okay thankfully so I had something to eat while at work but sadly I will not be back.

Google
THEY KNOW WHAT THEY DOING. 10/10 Hands down best grilled cheese I ever had in my life. That’s what made me come back. PRICES ARE FAIR and everything is so perfect it makes you come back!!!!! Grilled cheese, hot dog, crawfish nachos, wing meal, and a snowball for under $30! You can not beat that!!!

I am not from NOLA and it was my first time at Red Rooster. The service was great, southern hospitality at its finest. I ordered a bit of everything. I ordered Two snowballs Mardi Gras and Strawberry with condensed milk. They were both delicious and they came with a large top. I also ordered Fried fish that was seasoned to perfection, fried well, and it was juicy with a nice crunch. As I only ordered the fish it came with a Hawaiian roll. Best combination hands down. Double cheese burger combo fully dressed With a side of French fries. The burger was seasoned well and the toppings were perfectly topped, tossed on not sloppily. Presentation was everything. Lastly, I ordered the shrimp yetcamein the broth was seasoned well and the shrimp was cooked perfectly, not over cooked. The noodles were a little too much for the small soup I had. It over powered the dish and if I could get it with less noodles next time that would be all that I would change. I highly recommend giving Red Rooster a try. You will most certainly get your monies worth.

In the heart of New Orleans' throbbing Central City, a gem is hidden in plain sight: Red Rooster Snowballs. This place started small, a modest pit stop dubbed "Little Red Rooster" back in the firecracker summer of '77. Under the watchful eyes of "Ms. Lynn," it's morphed from just another seasonal joint into a full-blown, year-round sanctuary of flavor, standing defiant against the monotony of the typical New Orleans tourist traps. This isn't just about snowballs. Sure, they sling them with the best—try the banana snow cone drenched in condensed milk. It's like mainlining banana cream pie straight into your taste buds, minus the unnecessary fluff of crust. But this place is a microcosm of the city itself. The menu reads like a roll call of every New Orleans staple: po' boys stuffed to the gills, seafood that practically swims onto your plate, pralines so sweet they’ll make your teeth sing, and sandwiches that do the Muffuletta tradition proud. Ordering here is a breeze—no fuss, no muss, just pure efficiency with a side of Southern charm. There’s a window for shouting your desires into and another where those desires come to life, handed over in styrofoam and paper, steaming hot or blissfully cold. And if you can grab the lone picnic table out front, do it. It's the best seat in the house for soaking up the local color, watching the life of the neighborhood unfold as you dig in. Red Rooster is more than a mere eatery; it's a testament to New Orleans' spirit. It's where the locals go to escape the predictable and dive headfirst into the real, unvarnished culture of this city. Here, amidst the clatter and clamor of Central City, you're not just feeding on good food; you're absorbing history, community, and the kind of authenticity that can’t be fabricated. This place is a slice of life, a slice of New Orleans, and damn, does it taste good.

I waited over a half hour for a burger and fries and then when I inquired about my order I wasn’t told anything and the window closed in my face as the lady continued to take orders. As I stood there I wanted to cancel the order and she proceeds to tell me it’s coming and close the window again. I will not return no matter how good the food is if the customer service isn’t. An apology would go a long way. Not to be waiting all this time for a burger and fries.

Google
More than just snoballs - a full menu is available! My daughter and I stopped here on a Tuesday afternoon in July of 2019 for snoballs. They were delicious and our only regret was that we didn't come prepared to eat a full meal as well. The service was super friendly and our snoballs were ready quickly. It's in a residential neighborhood area but we found a place close by to park. Just know that may be an issue, depending on what time you arrive.

Yelp
Let me start by saying if I could leave half a star I would.. I decided on eating this place after another establishment I was looking forward to was closed but I saw that this place also had yakamein or "yat co mein" on there menu. We arrived here with a couple of people out in from waiting on their menu and appeared to be enjoying there food. I got the combination "yat co mein" beef/chicken. I also ordered a hamburger and fries. My friend had ordered the beef as well. Our food came out rather quickly but the girls working the windows attitudes could be greatly improved. The burger was basic and nothing really to rave about. It was the yakamein that blew me. This was my son and I first time trying it and as soon as he took one bite he told me it was nasty and refused to eat. I thought no? Let me try it. If this is what I have to look forward to at other places I'll never eat yakamein again. They legit need to take it off of their menu. The beef looked like gray beef cubes and the chicken pale. The stock tasted like seasoned pasta water with a ton of green onions. I tried adding hot sauce and it made no difference. Both my friend and I threw it away what you see in that picture attached is what was thrown away. If I could've gotten my money back I would have. I'd greatly appreciate the owner reaching out for a reimbursement honestly. It was the most distasteful thing I've eaten all year and needs tremendous improvement. The seating area provided is really cute.

Yelp
Ordered infamous "Yat Co Mein" and was disappointed. Soup lacked flavor, noodles were mushy, definitely not a dish I'd recommend on a humid day in Louisiana. It really just tasted like soy sauce and chicken broth with overcooked spaghetti noodles. Worst part was how excited I was to eat it (this dish has a lot of hype surrounding it). Would return to Red Rooster because service was friendly but will order something else next time. 3/5

Yelp
Theee best shrimp on bun I've ever had. The shrimp are fried and seasoned to perfection, stuff the bun and the bread is always so soft and fresh. There usually is a wait and a line but I understand why. Do yourself a favor and order one the next time you stop by.
google avatar

Malaika B.

Yelp
That red bean and rice plate! Thee best red beans I've had here! The chicken was fried good, if you have HBP beware cause no seasoning is spared!! The snowballs were good too !

Yelp
No trip to NOLA is complete with out a stop at Red Rooster. The prices are low, and the food is delicious. This is the best place in town for wings. I recommend coming here just for a snack. Get some small plates. Try a stuffed bell pepper for only $6.50. Or a meat pie for only $2! Or a grilled cheese for only $2.25! How do they keep the prices so low. If you want a meal, I recommend the 10 piece wing plate. It has french fries, tossed salad, toasted bread or cheese macaroni, veggie & potato salad. It will feed two people easy.

Daniel W.

Yelp
Awesome snowballs would definitely return next time I'm in town. Weather was perfect to sit outside

Yelp
Im here with sad news! I went to red rooster this weekend and they changed the nacho cheese i used to drive out of my way for their nachos but now they taste like everyone else's. They aren't bad but I sure do miss the old cheese
google avatar

Shanice M.

Pernell S.

Yelp
Yummy, yummy, yummy! I don't know why I hadn't visited this place sooner. Great prices, delicious food, great service. Everything is made to order so allow time for cooking. The portions are large and the prices are very reasonable. I had the catfish plate which contained 3 pieces of fish, potato salad, peas, Mac and cheese and Hawaii bread for $11.75. Everything was delicious OMG!!! The snowballs and nachos were also good. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Dropped by Red Rooster on a whim after a long walk to nearby Michaels, and got a very nice snowball. They do have sugarfree flavors--strawberry and ice cream--though they are not on the menu. Prices are great, only 1.50 for a small. Overall a cool spot that seems very popular with the neighborhood. Lots of people getting takeout meals while I sat and ate my treat.

Yelp
The service here was great and friendly, and it was the best Po' Boy I ever had. This place is a community staple , and I recommend everyone try their po' boy here.

Chanell S.

Yelp
I've been dining with red rooster for years, and this is the first time I was disappointed in the food. The chicken was burned and salty. The yam mean had pieces of meat I've never seen. I was truly disappointed in the food, but the service was great.
google avatar

Deleanor K.

Yelp
This has great food and prices! My new go to spot. Great flavor with my Ya Ka Mein and meat pie.

Yelp
Food is amazing . If I could give more stars I would. I asked the nice lady who took my order could I have crawfish cheese fries instead of nachos and they were able to. Would absolutely recommend. Food seasoned to perfection, fried perfectly, will be back. *also purchased a 12 oz Bahama Mama sno ball. Delicious as well. I saw most ppl Order them and add condensed milk as a topping (60 cent extra for toppings) which gives it an interesting twist. Check them out for some authentic New Orleans food.

Yelp
It might be the Westbanker in me that loves a good roadside food shack, but this place is pretty legit. Came here for some grub before we started the whole house float thingy. Food was perfect! I got the cheeseburger on French and it is pretty tasty. The cheese fries is fries with nacho cheese sauce, but if you don't mind it like myself, you will enjoy yourself. Great food and pretty cheap prices equals a place I plan on going visit again.

Nadia R.

Yelp
Came upon this place before heading out of Nola and OMG it is SO good!!!!!!!!!!! Got the shrimp poboy with ketchup instead of mayo & the hot sausage sandwich with cheese and grilled onions. One of the best meals we've discovered in the Garden District! They have a big menu, and a whole snow cone section too. And a mom runs it with her adorable daughter who was helping take orders. This place is a GEM!

Yelp
Baby when I tell you, the best nachos in New Orleans hands dwn, I haven't tried the food plates , but I already know it's DA BOMB

google avatar

Terrance B.

Yelp
It's a neighborhood snowball place that's as some of the best yet-ca-men in New Orleans and the snowballs are great large selection of flavors

Raven W.

Yelp
My favorite place to eat in NOLA! They are a staple in the community! Try the shrimp po boy, nachos and fries!
google avatar

Farro W.

Yelp
If you're looking for the best New Orleans creole cooking with a, you're eating at grandma house today, type food that awakens your soul, this is the place to go. Do not go eating else where in New Orleans and saying, they said their food is the best in New Orleans but they just ok, without trying Big Mommas food at the Red Rooster Snowball Stand. Don't just search for Red Rooster either, because you know other businesses always steal a name if they know the name is popular. Don't say you ate at The Real Original Red Rooster if they do not sell snowballs. Their seafood platter and nachos with crawfish and cheese, is to fight for. You better make sure you look at the number on your ticket, because if you go grab my plate when they call my number, it is on and poppin, we gone fight.
google avatar

Megan D.

Yelp
Food Review: The roast beef po-boy is TDF!!! I recommend calling ahead with your order. Ask for extra meat, extra pickles and extra mayo. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Avery P.

Yelp
Best Yakamein in the city! I crave their yakamein & the hot sauce they put in it A-1. They gotta work on their customer service tho lol but it's not terrible, just not friendly.

Kenneth B.

Yelp
Me and my family whent hear to get a snowball and it was sooooo good and the Po' Boy we got with it they were so delicious
google avatar

Tyra H.

Yelp
The lines are long but it's good. Be patient the club sandwich is to die for. The combination yak amen is delicious also and the blue punch snowball
google avatar

Brandon M.

Yelp
My cousin took to this spot to try out some yakamein. Some of best I've ever had and definitely will be coming back
google avatar

Yelp
Two words: Delicious and consistent. The food taste like home and is still affordable. I love going to pick up food or a snoball because the ice is good and I always see friends in line. Lol. Thank you!!!!
google avatar

Trina K.

Yelp
This remains my go to place for Ya Ka Mein. It is a real treat and it is always good. If you are in the area, check them out.

Teresa G.

Yelp
A friend that use to live out here recommenced Red Rooster. A nice getaway from the tourist area. When my husband wazed the address it sent us to the wrong place, you have to get directions from google. Anyway..it's clientele is mostly New Orleans Natives so you already know! We ordered the shrimp po boy, yet-ca-me in chicken, and wings. And of course 2 snow balls. The fresh and flakiness of the bread of the po boy made half of it the breaded shrimp made the other half. The wings were perfectly crunchy with no seasoning on it. The yet-ca-Mein although I don't know where this plate originated from, it reminds me of a dinner that your mama had to invent when groceries were low at the house. Very tasty and filling! Try something different try Red Rooster.
google avatar

Troihan M.

Yelp
I come here often, and it never disappoints. A nice place to get a good meal. This place is a very small walk-up stand, but the food is really good. Small menu, but food has big flavor. From their chicken plates, sandwiches and poboys, and other small items, you can't go wrong. items, I truly recommend this place. They also have a variety of delicious snowballs to choose from as well.

Yelp
I've been going to Red Rooster since I was a little girl ..I'm 43 now...Every time I return home to visit, I make it my business to run uptown for a snowball from Red Rooster..But listen, I need them to invest in some gloves or something..It is not sanitary to be pressing down on the ice that's in the cup with the palm of your hands ....I guess this is done to make room for more of the shaved ice...ok, I get that..But this should not be done with the same hands you've been handling money with..Not to mention some people's palms are sweaty ...I watched one young lady take orders, take and count the money, then proceed to making the snowballs without washing her hands or even as much as grabbing a lil sanitizer ...I'm all for productivity and I understand they're trying to get the orders in and out in a timely manner...However, there should be some level of cleansing ness in the process ..And don't tell me nothing about ice don't carry germs ..BULL&@@$! Also, if there is syrup dripping down the cup, it'll be nice if they would take the time to do a quick wipe down..If not, please supply the customer with enough napkins to clean it themselves ..Nonetheless, I live for the Wild Cherry & Hawaiian... Carry'on

Yelp
I love this place! Everytime I come to New Orleans I have to visit. My favorite is 'Yet ca mein'
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
This place makes good snowballs and assorted snacks at far better prices than many of the other more popular snowball joints. The neighborhood definitely still has authentic Central City eccentricities with things like Ya Ka Mein and people banging on the window of the snowball stand yelling about money they think was charged wrong. It is usually a really quick turn around and faster than many of the other snowball joints about town.
google avatar

alena n.

Yelp
Snowballs year round--even on the coldest day of the year!! Coming from NY I had no idea snowballs were seasonal (and that NOLA gets seriously cold!) I found Red Rooster after searching for winter snowballs all week in the French Quarter. We stopped here on our way to the airport. My snowball was fluffy and smooth and everything I had hoped for! Next time I will also have to try the ya ka mein!!
google avatar

Rikers E.

Yelp
Ordered the Bell peppers and hot sausage. Totally delicious... :-) then topped it off w/ a pink lemonade snow cone. It's worth the trip.
google avatar

Amy O.

Yelp
Every time we visiting New Orlean this is our first stop! We always order Hot sausages PoBoy & it's the BEST!!! Check it out & you will luv!

Megan T.

Yelp
The customer service of this place is what drop the score. Rude over the phone. Pick up our yak-ca- mein for the first time. You would think they would place all three of soups in one bag, nope, they literally threw them at me. The soups are ok , I feel I could do better elsewhere. Sucks because it was recommended through Facebook. Really need to work on that part.
google avatar

Dominique H.

Yelp
Chill and convenient spot to grab a bite. Food is ALWAYS seasoned perfectly!! I absolutely LOVE this place.

Roberta F.

Yelp
It's a locals place, and it's always busy. I would pass it by as I was driving down Washington, but only stopped there a few days ago. WOW!! They prepare everything to order. I had the fish sandwich and it was outstanding! My friend had the cheeseburger - no patties here. They actually use real hamburger meat! The snowballs are to die for. Get the rooter one with ICE CREAM in the middle! It's like a rooter float! It's definitely a 'locals' place, but they make you feel right at home. They even have Yak a Main!
google avatar

Christian E.

Yelp
The ya ka mein wasn't all that great! I have had better. Maybe the batch I had was old and sitting for a while because there wasn't any flavor.

Bryan M.

Yelp
Our Uber driver (Harry I think) brought us here. He seemed to know everybody working there and most of the customers too. We had the hot sausage po boy and the shrimp po boy. Both were awesome but I enjoyed my fiancés shrimp po boy slightly better. The snowball were great too. Can't go wrong here.

Mayda C.

Yelp
This was hands down the best PO boy in New Orleans! We were in NOLA 6 days and went there three times! Great staff the bread is incredible! Don't be deceived by the fact that it is a walk up you will not be disappointed!

Katherine R.

Yelp
We are from out-of-town, and my sister wanted a snowball. We found the Red Rooster online and decided to go. We unknowingly arrived just as they were closing up, and they opened it just for our group! It was so nice. The ice of the snowball was extremely smooth. It was very sweet but very good. Next time we're in town, we'll definitely come to this place again!

Umma N.

Yelp
Even though it's a snoball stand( the snoballs are great by the way), their food is AWESOME!! I go there at least twice a week for the yet-ca-mein or the fried shrimp po boy with everything! They toast the French bread perfectly! YUM!!
