On North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Coronavirus Feels Worse than a Hurricane | Eater

"A seafood-focused, Duck-based restaurant run by chef-owner Wes Stepp whose business model includes catering and personal-chef services that allowed some carryout and bulk orders after dine-in service was halted. Those channels provided some cash flow but not enough to cover labor and operating costs; staff have been volunteering to take calls, cook, and deliver, and the restaurant was operating on its last lines of credit when the bridges closed, leaving the owner fearful about the upcoming summer season." - Hannah Leidy

Ate here after eating at NC Coast (their sister restaurant) the night before, and the food was just as good as NC Coast. We split three appetizers, and all were delicious. Our entrees were great as well. We will be back! Update: we came back. We ordered another round of appetizers which were great! We ordered our entrees. Shortly after starting to eat my entree, I found a bug in the arugula in my Southern Parm dish. Our server was so kind and immediately refunded us and apologized. Unfortunately, things happen, but the way the staff handled it was professional and appreciated.

A Culinary Gem in Duck!!! Came here for lunch and it was amazing. The food was so flavorful and fresh😮‍💨🙌🏻hands down to the chef. Our server was the sweetest and made the experience even better. Definitely coming back next time I’m in town! 10/10

Denise was our server and she was a delight! Really enjoyed her. The food was delicious! I had halibut with mashed potatoes and yummy asparagus! My husband had shrimp and grits! He was quite pleased. Will visit again when we come back.

Google
Small but nicely appointed restaurant. We had a reservation for 10 and our waitress was sweet and efficient. Speciality cocktails were amazing. All of our meals were delicious. My dish could have been hotter but serving 10 at one time is likely difficult to keep hot at the same time so understandable.

Google
Amazing experience. This chef is amazing and absolutely love his two restaurants in Duck. Best places here honestly. No other place compares. Our server tonight was amazing and super friendly. Haven’t been here before but will definitely be back every other night next year between NC Coastal and Red Sky. Food was phenomenal.

This was our first time eating here and if we had time we would’ve come back for dinner. The service was great! Everyone welcomed us when we came in and our waitress was very pleasant. We got the crab bisque which was outstanding, and had chunks of real crab meat. My husband got the shrimp po boy. The shrimp were delicious. The batter was well seasoned and a light fry. The roll was soft and chewy with fresh veggies. I got the steak bites with roasted red pepper sauce and blue cheese which was very tasty and finished my meal with a slice of blueberry cheesecake.

I enjoyed a delicious meal last night -“Tastefully fit” was wonderful! Shout out to Chef Wes and his staff for a marvelous evening. Special thanks for supporting our community non-profits and causes as well.

Arrived around 4pm. If it weren’t for gps, I don’t know if we would have noticed where Red Sky was located, as it’s in a shared building with a realty office. We were the only customers when we went in. The very friendly hostess seated us right away and the waitress greeted us quickly. We started off with the Creamy Crab Soup. It was delectable. For our main meals I ordered the Shrimp po Boy and a side crab cake, Hubby ordered their Shrimp and Grits & Daughter ordered pasta with butter. My po Boy was really delicious and quite filling I couldn’t even eat much of the fries, which were cooked perfectly (crispy and flavorful on the outside, soft on the inside!). I shared 1/2 my side Crab Cake with my hubby. It was really good. Loved the sauce they had on the side. He enjoyed his Shrimp and Grits and said it was flavorful. The Cellentani Pasta with butter wasn’t Al dente, but my daughter ate it all. Quite a darling place, but a bit overpriced. Though they have a small kids menu, it strikes me as more of an adult eatery with adult drinks available. High quality food, casual wear, a bit overpriced.

Yelp
Dinner last night was amazing! Wes and his staff are on their game for sure! Each course was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious! Drinks were spot on as well! And that coconut Panna cotta - OMG!

Yelp
We came in after a later night drive in. The atmosphere was welcoming and the food and drinks were very good. We would recommend!

Yelp
Our family stopped here for our last meal on our lovely vacation to Duck. We didn't make reservations and were lucky enough to squeeze a reservation for dinner on a rainy night. Their location and setting of the restaurant is not the most exciting one in Duck but it was clean and had a good vibe. The food service was very quick and we are out of there in a little over an hour for a family of five. Overall our experience here was pretty good and I'd come back again to sit on the patio.

Yelp
I don't know where the bad experiences are coming from -- after a week here this is easily my top 2, if not top place we've been. It was a pretty slow Wednesday evening, called and made reservation. Walked in, greated very pleasantly and seated. It did take a minute to get our order in, but that seemed to be because 3 tables closed at once. But excellent service otherwise. The food was AMAZING. Tuna Nachos: bright, flavorful, great mix of heat and sweet. We were brought two by accident which we were glad they did because one might have been enough but two was perfect. A little pricy given that fact, FYI. But a great app. Kids Mac-n-cheese: Amazing. I missed a pic of the cheese-pull, but it was basically every bite. Smooth and creamy white cheeses. You could tell they small-batch it. Kids pasta: my picky eater is begging to go back for more. Shrimp/Grits: My wife raved over her dish and we've had them all over the south. She said the warm spinach was excellent too. Chef's grill: Mostly chef's choice and I was quietly whispering, "please don't let it be zuccini and squash, please....". Let me tell you those were some of the best prepared zucs and squash every. Incredibly flavorful, taste of the grill, and perfectly soft and crunchy. I could have gorged myself on the wild rice, also crazy rich/deep flavors and perfectly cooked wiht just a little crunch that is supposed to be there instead of the gloop of rice most places give you. Cracy that I'm talking so much about the accompaniments. lol. Well the beef bites were really good, especially with the peruvian sauce. I would have liked them just a little more rare but they were mostly medium/medium well. Shrimp, also exceptional with great seasoning, perfect doneness and paired well with the peru sauce. Two tiny things in the grand scheme: -More Peruvian sauce on the side. LOL was about 2 tsp too little when I got to the end. -More knowledge about the beer choices. Since we're tourist, we don't know much about the differences of some and the staff didn't either. Small nitpick as I know it's the start of the season. Wes - you had a great team working 5/28 at 7:30pm. Theymade customer's for life out of this family anytime we visit.

Yelp
We visited Red Sky on a recent OBX trip and they were, as always, amazing. Service was stellar, and enjoyed a couple of great entrees (shrimp and redneck risotto is pictured) at a leisurely pace. Reservations recommended!

Yelp
Great choice for dinner in Duck. Tasty cocktails and seafood options. Kids dishes available. Solid atmosphere nothing specific. Can be busy and loud.

Yelp
We stopped here after 12 hours on the road only to be basically ignored. When a waitress did come she said "you guys really look like you need to eat" then proceeded to walk off after filling just one of our waters. We left, after a wait to get my partners water filled, because if the first thing out of our waitresses mouth is "you look like.."' well, its not a place we really want to eat. We went down the road to Duck Deli and were treated like family.

Yelp
We had a great fresh and delicious breakfast we had the best French toast in town food was very good and well prepared.

Yelp
What a great little find! We stumbled upon this place looking for a place for lunch. It is newly opened- just opened last week.

Yelp
We loved our dinner last night at Red Sky in Duck! Excellent service and food. My beet salad with a crab cake was delicious! Family member loved their rib eye, sweet potato bowl with fresh cobia and scallops and pasta. Especially enjoyed the crab dip. Service was terrific! Beautiful ambience.

Chloe Anne B.

Yelp
Amazing meal prepared for our party of six. The fresh catch and crab bisque were outstanding. This restaurant doesn't get the overflow crowds like it's sister's restaurant does, but it should.

Catherine K.

Yelp
Just a wonderful experience from beginning to end. Alexandra was a fantastic server and was able to accommodate all of our food allergies (sesame, tree nuts, peanuts, and dairy) with the utmost professionalism and courtesy. Those with food allergies safely ate the delicious food, and everything was perfect. The beignets at the conclusion were just icing on the top! Best dining experience we had as a family on our vacation in OBX. Thank you!

Yelp
Just Okay. Mixed bag of quality. Scallops were nice. Crab dip tasted like cheese. Fried shrimp were decent, crab cake was not. Fries were greasy. Inside dining area is really cramped, and loud. Service was average. All told wasn't worth the final bill.

Deborah K.

Yelp
We tried very hard to be patient. It took over 1/2 an hour to get a drink ( wine and beer?) and 75 minutes to get food. Asked for appetizers to come before the meal... we had to remind the server....i was disappointed that once the meal came it was cold. New menu so many items not available?? ( no tarter sauce?) Food was tasty once it came. Staff was sweet but very inefficient. As many other restaurants in OBX very understaffed.

Yelp
Enjoyed a family dinner at Red Sky during spring break week in Duck. The dining room is wonderfully updated and modern, and it just feels good to sit in there. The menu has something for everyone - our family enjoyed pasta, burgers, chicken and seafood with no complaints. Prices are compatible with other Duck dining we did this week. Service was efficient and unobtrusive. Would certainly return here.

George W.

Yelp
The service was wonderful. The young waiter was kind, informative and joyful. A hard worker. Atmosphere was nice. Cute café. In our party, two of us had hamburgers they looked and taste wonderful. One order of grits and shrimp. I have to say that was very disappointing. It was like tomato bisque over grits. Not at all the southern shrimp and grits. Two of us had the Baja fish tacos. Presentation was wonderful. The corn tortillas were a little soft difficult to eat. The toppings had a lot of flavor. One big disappointment was the fish was very fishy. I know it was fish taco. But both of us thought the fish was too fishy. The burgers were great.

Maureen B.

Yelp
The food and drinks were amazing! We loved the shrimp and redneck risotto, the chicken parm, and the specials (salmon and snapper). Also got the blackberry bloom, which was fantastic! I highly, highly recommend this restaurant! The dining room is small, so if you have a big group definitely make reservations in advance! The kitchen got our food out super fast, which was great!!

Julienne A.

Yelp
Red Sky is a must-visit spot in Duck--the food is absolutely incredible, from their fresh grilled seafood to their perfectly cooked chicken parm. The vibe is laid-back but stylish, great for a nice dinner out. Everything we tried was packed with flavor, especially the appetizers. Do not sleep on the poke nachos! Definitely one of the best meals we had on the Outer Banks!

Yelp
Delicious gem in Duck. We've been coming to Corolla and have our same rotation of restaurants we go to throughout the week. Sad we didn't discover this one until this year! Their food was phenomenal. I got the fresh catch - salmon Oscar style - and it was so flavorful and perfectly cooked. My dad and brother to the crab soup, which I tried and loved. My mom got the duck, which was tasty and tender. One of my favorite spots going forward!
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice crab cakes, also very good waiter with cool hair. Great patio with a street that has real cars on it.

Abigail S.

Yelp
The dishes were so amazing, one of the best we've had all week. The service was great we appreciated Jack's hospitality. The venue was small but really nice and was not overstimulating and clean!!

Yelp
We've had Thanksgiving dinner at Red Sky for several years, and it's become our tradition. At the beginning of November we contacted them to make sure we got our reservation in early. We were given a number to text, which we did, sharing all needed details. We never heard back with a confirmation, so called last week to make sure they had our reservation. I was told they're now full. I explained the situation and was told, 'Oh, sorry about that.' He gave us another number to call. Long story short, we've called and texted numerous numbers for them, left a message through Facebook Messenger, etc., and have gotten NO response. I guess they're not hurting for business. I recommend avoiding Red Sky; there are too many other great restaurants on OBX.
google avatar

Amanda-lee P.

Yelp
Underwhelming. We got the ribeye, mainly because the menu was so sparse. Zero seasoning. I've never eaten a ribeye with so little flavor. They have three cocktails to choose from and I got the lemon cello margarita which was undrinkable.

Yelp
Where to begin.(We had 13 people) 1. Don't take an 8:30 reservation if you're not going to give them the same level of service that you are going to give earlier diners. * we watched the other tables being treated with so much more care and they even brought a dessert platter to show the customers dessert options. * we had our walk up with bill in hand and said "Are we all set or did you want to order dessert?" * when my wife ordered a glass of wine with dessert the waiter had to get it himself because bartender couldn't be bothered. He was too busy cleaning up the bar Those are just a few examples. 2. They took our reservation and then overbooked after the fact and took away our outside seating option instead of making the later reservations sit inside. Showed no cares at all. 3. Mixed drinks were not good, dirty martini was swimming with vermouth. They ran out of a drink ingredient and then decided to bring two drinks to the table our party didn't even order instead. Also did NOT taste good. 4. Most the Food was cold and while some dishes were good others were bland *scallop apps, were cold. *the scallop Capesante was bland and scallops were cold. * lobster cream soup was cold and ended up being last bowl of soup they had. *they dumped the coffee before asking us about desserts and when one of our guests wanted a cup the waiter told us it would be fresh because they just threw it out. Sadly it tasted burnt, because they probably used the same grounds that were used on the previous batch. * my son love the chicken tenders though. 5. Menu options were not available, and when one of our friends showed disappointment she couldn't order it, the waiter said "That's what you get with 8:30 reservation." 6. I watched their entire staff standing in the kitchen our food on the service table and no-one grabbing them. Which explains why our food was cold. Last but not least...... #7 if you're going to constantly touch your long sweaty hair to re-tie it, please for the love of god, wash your hands before you come to service the table. When the bills came we were automatically billed with 20% because of how many people we had. Normally I would have no issues with that, but the entire service by the over all staff did not deserve that % of a tip.

Yelp
Delicious meal and good service. The crab dip, beef small plate, and scallops were all delicious. Shrimp and grits also very good.

Yelp
We dropped in for a couple cocktails. Got a Manhattan and a vodka martini. Vodka martini was good. Manhattan average. Manhattan was $24 versus $15 for martini. No drink menu so no clue about prices. Maybe our fault but felt gouged. Never going back.

Yelp
Good was good.....service even better. Can't believe after almost 10 years, that's the first time I've been there. Be back next year for sure.

Michele S.

Yelp
Not our first time at Red Sky. Was really looking forward to our dinner based on positive experiences in the past. Last night was a big disappointment! They sat a couple in a room with the loudest large party - deafening ( not their fault but really ?!) Our meals were pretty bad Southern chicken Parm - overcooked chicken and cold Mac n cheese Salmon special was ok - per hubby - but the asparagus was not cooked and was cold Dessert - looked good but failed on taste So many great options in OBX - hoping this was just a bad night for the kitchen
google avatar

Katie J.

Yelp
Great beach dining spot! The food was plated beautifully and tasted great, and the service was wonderful. I will say it was pretty loud in there at full dinner time, so consider that if you want a quieter evening, but in general the ambiance was fun and inviting. Would go back and take the family.
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
Chicken parm was by far my favorite dish. I tried a bite of everyone's, haha. The chicken parm is unique in its flavor/presentation. Pesto flavor is involved. It's the dish that makes me want to go back again!

Yelp
Decent pop in spot in Duck. Owned by same person as NC Coast (also in Duck) only relevant because some of the menu items are similar with NC Coast being a bit more upscale with a far superior ambiance on the Currituck Sound. Service has always been steller.

Greg C.

Yelp
Excellent service. Good menu selections. Atmosphere is casual cafe. Make a reservation.

Yelp
This place was so good we hit it twice on our vacation! We showed up on our turnover day Sat and were able to get a table late in the evening. What a treat after a long drive. I wasn't super hungry so I opted for the tuna bite appetizer and the crab soup. Both excellent. I don't eat a lot of fried food as the grease upsets my stomach, but this was perfectly breaded and not greasy at all. The Peruvian sauce was the star of the dish. My husband opted for the fresh catch with lump crab, hollandaise and asparagus. So delicious we went back a second night later in the week. This time I went for the mixed grill and my hubby tried the southern plate. The mixed grill was so good! The shrimp were perfectly cooked and the beef hit the spot after a week of mostly seafood. My husband's fish was yummy and I snuck a few French fries. I'm glad I didn't order the fried bc I wouldn't have been able to stop myself from eating every last one.

Yelp
I enjoyed this restaurant - enough options that you don't break the budget, but also some fun twists. Highly recommend making a reservation - it was packed and seemed a bit overwhelming for the hostess even with reservations. The tables also did not get cleaned right away so potentially a staffing issue. I think that there are multiple dining areas, but the main area with the kitchen is where a lot of the "action" happens. Our server, Starla, was great. We got slices of key lime pie and found out that the desserts are homemade each night! One thing that I will note for the meals - my sister-in-law and I got salads, and my brother and husband got entrees (southern parm and grits, respectively). While all of our meals were delicious, the dinner entrees were noticeably smaller than the salads. Why I gave it 3 stars: 1. The hostess seemed to need redirection from the owner and other wait staff to get everyone checked in and seated; and 2. The guys were still hungry when we left because their entrees weren't filling for them. For the prices of the entrees, I guess I would expect that we'd all be full.

Yelp
Had the charbroiled scallops with jasmine rice which had a chilli bite to them. Unfortunately, the rice on this dish was under cooked in places. The waitress however was good and discounted meal. Menu selection for this place is minimal. Not much to pick from.

Yelp
Service was terrible. Waited so long for our drinks. Once we got the drinks it was just ok nothing to special. Ordered the French onion soup and catch of the day.... Just ok. The soup was cold and the catch of the day was just ok. Not sure if we are in this area I would come back. My son lives in the area and he said this will be the only time they visit this place. They only had one other table in the place that had people at them... Dear lord it took forever to get anything.

Yelp
My wife and I just celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary today. Our meals were well prepared and the service was spot on. Chance and the chef did a wonderful job. The ambiance was perfect for our special occasion. We will return in the future.

Matt F.

Yelp
Red Sky is great. Staff was friendly and attentive. We started with the Crab Dip. Highly recommend it! We got the following dishes: 1. Seared Scallops w Rice- nice and light, fresh tastes! 2. Shrimp and Grits- I think depending on the chef, this dish can be different. I was here about a month ago and the dish was kind of plain. The dish we got tonight was 2x as much food, and had a tangy sauce. Very good though. 3. Southern Parm- again this dish was a little different. The chicken breast had a little more black pepper but the mac and cheese was spot on! 4. Fried Southern- this is classic Fried Fish, Fried Shrimp, and a Crab Cake, over fries and slaw. Slaw was excellent as were the fries. Shrimp were huge and the coating was like tempura. The fried fish might have been the best. The crab cake was a little salty. Service was much better this go around, more attentive. The dining room needs to crank down the A/C. It was hot!

Yelp
This place just doesn't care about their customers. On a Saturday night, we were one of four tables on the patio, and each one had a problem. Sadly, we were the first of the tables sat, so we got to experience our issues, then watch those sat around us experience their own issues. In our instance, we think our server just forgot to do his job, at least, that's what we're hoping instead of the alternate option of him just choosing not to do his job. Though with it taking up to 10 minutes to get a canned beer, on two different occasions, the work ethic definitely needs to be questioned. Our app took 20 minutes to get to us, and when the table behind us got there's before us, after sitting down way after us, we should have seen the writing on the wall. Shame on us for not trusting our gut and just walking out then. If we had, we could have simply avoided the unneeded drama to come, but sadly we didn't trust our gut and I guess just hoped to fill it instead. That hope proved to be a false one and then some! When our app did come the runner gave us 2 side plates for 3 people. We asked for another, she checked the nearby bus pan for one, and when one wasn't there she couldn't bother herself to run to the kitchen and come back with one for us. Then the entrees took forever (another 25 minutes), but we did get an update 20 minutes in (after we got the app) that my daughter's kids menu fried shrimp and French fries came up undercooked and needed to be redone. Not finished for some reason, but started from scratch. I asked how the cook didn't catch this before plating it, and we were told the cooks are students from Asia and don't really know how to cook using a deep fryer. Ok, that's concerning to say the least. Then 5 minutes later our food did make its way out of the kitchen. My wife and my food were ice cold, yet my daughter's was piping hot, but "not all the shrimp were cooked yet", so "more were on the way" according to our server. We got the "privilege" of speaking to the manager after sending our cold $30+ entrees back, and were met with nothing but a combative attitude from a manager who can't take responsibility for the failure that was happening all around him. I asked why the entire table wasn't refired when the simplest entree wasn't cooked properly, and of course there was no reason given, so they were perfectly fine serving cold $30+ entrees to save a buck over making sure everything served was 100% up to par and honoring their restaurant's reputation. This shows they have no standards except penny pinching and hoping the customer is dumb enough to eat and pay for their failures. In the end, the manager was so delusional that he thought we'd return another time. This, after he came to us not to apologize, but to be combative. Ultimately, we're on vacation and thought we'd try them out. Big mistake! Not only did they fail miserably, they left my wife and I stuck trying to figure out where to get dinner in a pinch before everything closes for the night. Clearly, we have zero reason to return. After dealing with the manager, the decision not to return was a no brainer, and the desire to save anyone who would listen to do the same led to this review. Don't make the same mistake we made. Don't go here. They want your money, but they don't deserve it. They simply aren't willing to put in the effort to earn it, so don't give it to them.

Tasia R.

Yelp
Staff was really nice and attentive. We sat at the bar by the kitchen area watching all the delicious food go out. A bit of an upscale vibe but with some comfort food options. Tried crab dip and chicken parm which were both delicious. We were even given extra fresh chips to take home with our leftovers.

Yelp
Disappointing - ordered fish tacos: shells were stale, the fish was bland, dry and overall not good at all.

Yelp
Very disappointed that I could not enjoy Red Sky Cafe today. We have been dining in AND taking out from this restaurant for years, but tonight when I called to place an order for takeout, I was told that they're not accepting carry-out orders today. I had to ask the gentleman on the phone to repeat what he said because it didn't make any sense to me. I guess their dining in business is doing so well that they didn't need any extra orders during this off-season spring week? I don't know-- seems like during a pandemic, you'd still be encouraging people to order takeout. But maybe this red state doesn't worry about COVID-19. I really don't know.

Yelp
We were looking for some place to eat after a long morning of sightseeing. A lady recommended this restaurant and we were pleased. The food was good and our server was attentive.

Yelp
The service was very good. The food was nicely prepared. But, over priced based on portion sizes, especially the appetizers. The wines are expensive with less than generous pours. Not a place that I would recommend or return to. Overpriced.

Yelp
On the 15July2021. Dinning at the Red sky Cafe after spending time at the beach was a night to remember. Service was friendly and well attentive until the restaurant was getting packed by new customers. She seem to hold her ground despite the increase wait time on our part. Service is average at the end. Drinks: I had two alcoholic drinks that tasted very well. To be honest they were juices with almost zero alcoholic. Good for taste. Looking for buzz not happening with their drinks. Food: -The crab dip appetizers: rich in the creamy bland sauce with zero crab. If there was crab then it was brutally buried by the blandness. -The scallops with the bacon jam: Sweet with a bit of heat and with each bit was just of sadness filling my soul of bland and overpowered sweetness. -Salmon piccata: The lord of bland and the virus of sadness. I was told by my wife that I looked depressed while eating this meal. The capers had zero taste. The risotto was heavy with its starch and when it comes to risotto it so post to have a nice creamy spread. It was dense enough to use it as cement. The sauce or lack of sauce might as well be water. The salmon needs to be repent for the abomination and suffering for its cooking process. Bland, bland and bland. Zero flavor. This dish is in need of everything to help bring out the flavor it can deliver. Price vs value: How the hell people keep coming here for its price point is beyond me. Either people are desperate enough to find a meal and don't give a damn on price or their taste is just as bland. Don't even fathom to dine at this place. Please dine at the nearest gas station.
