Chicago Could Stop Liquor Sales at 10 p.m. - Eater Chicago

"Esam Hani owns liquor stores, bars, and restaurants and says the restriction could push business toward his bars and restaurants like Cafe Con Leche and the Harding Tavern, and doesn’t predict a huge impact at his store, Red Star Liquors." - Ashok Selvam

One of Chicago’s Best Bars Starts a Delivery and Pickup Food Pop-Up - Eater Chicago

"Staying in Logan Square, Block Club Chicago has the story about Red Star Liquors, a store that debuted in 1991. Hani was one of the first to see the neighborhood’s potential for food and drink. It might be news to New Yorkers, but the deli counter gives the longtime liquor shop a bodega or corner store feel. Hani tells Block Club that he needed to think of creative ways to survive as the suspension of dine-in service has hurt his restaurants. Italian subs, lasagna, and salads are among the offerings for pick up." - Ashok Selvam

Google
I made multiple trips to the north side to try their sandwiches; the first time was a bust, as they were closed (even though it was listed as open), and the second time they said they were “out of bread” which is hard to believe given that they’re a deli shop AND they’re part of a grocery store. I just got two turkey sandwiches from their shop and to be honest the food was just ok at best. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great— and the bread was super tough. I am not a fan of bread I have to fight to eat.

Google
Good sandwich place to eat before going to the movies at Logan Theater. They didn't have a cheese only version but they swapped the meats out for me. The menu vegetarian item doesn't come with the accoutrements, so I asked for something different and was accommodated. Thanks!! Tasty bread and fillings.

Google
I usually really enjoy their sandwiches and have never had an issue. Today I got their turkey sandwich and one half had a long hair in it. Then when I started analyzing the other side it seems to be either a piece of a wrapper (not the sandwich wrapper) or maybe a piece of a cleaning sponge? Either way pretty disappointing

Google
I love the sandwiches at this spot I stopped in there today around 5pm to grab a sandwich and the lady who made my sandwich was really nice she has great customer service I’ll definitely keep stopping here to grab a sandwich she makes them really delicious and juicy I give her 5 stars ⭐️

Alec

Google
Usually place is a 5 star, however, I got 2 tunas about 10min ago. No lettuce no tomato and basically no tuna. Added avo and guardians… 2 slices of avo per sandwich. Not sure what the guy back there was doing.

Kyle Bailey

Google
Deli sandwiches are good. Quality varies day to day and depending on who is making it behind the counter, but overall the sandwiches are good.

Google
I was at work and I asked my coworker, " Hey, where can I get a good sandwich?" This place was recommended. I wondered, how good could a sandwich be from a liquor store? this was the most sandwichy sandwich if sandwich ever sandwiched!!! I ordered the turkey sub and it was QUITE DELICIOUS!!! I will be eating here again

Jenna L-A

Google
Order turkey all star club no avocado no bacon no cheese as it is suppose to come with & no pickle as I added. Very plain sandwich for 12.99 plus tax. I told restaurant an useless. I am diabetes an they want me to wait to eat til delivery driver comes to get food back so they can examine it ... Then wait for delivery driver to other deliveries then send me out correct sandwich. No concept of diabetes..& no como. Sense. Ppl do not waste time calling a restaurant on a issue instead of eating if there is no issue. Very poor MGMT... Will not order here again plain bread with shaved turkey lunch meat with nothing on it but lots of lettuce definitely not worth 12.99 Go to Aldi for better lunch meet. Worse restaurant experience an after 2 bite of this plain tasteless sandwich put in garbage will never forget this an do not recommend...Wont ever order here again......

Yelp
Good spot to grab ice cold booze on Milwaukee. I often grab something cold to drink here. On this occasion, we wanted to try the deli sandwich after leaving the walk-in. I got the Italian sub and my husband got the roast beef. They now carry pickles which I added in addition to lettuce, tomato and onions. Sandwiches were clutch. I ended up adding mayo and mustard to mine. The bread was super soft and meat was of good quality. My sandwich paired good with a bottle of Pinot Grigio.

Yelp
The man making the sandwiches is rude and unprofessional. He asked my order several times after refusing to read the ticket for the online order I placed, was annoyed he had to make my mobile order that should have already been ready, and he was super disorganized. Hastily handed me the sandwich without saying a word. The food is fine but the service tells me I shouldn't bother going back. Basic manners would be nice. Not the first time I was disappointed with the employees.
google avatar

Kaylan H.

Yelp
I got delivery and the sandwich I ordered was phenomenal! The potato salad sent out was expired according to the label on the container and smelled a little rough, so I just trashed it, but would def go back for another sandwich.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Man was this a disappointment. Been meaning to swing through and grab a sandwich since they started selling them and finally got around to it. Grabbed an Italian. Bread was beat. Rock hard, inedible. Ended up folding the ingredients into a meat taco like shell, lol The cuts, vinegrette and hot giard were good. But like, a good sandwich starts with good bread. If you're open until 8, and your fresh bread is completely beat by 4, close earlier or get a mid day ship. Can't imagine I'd go drop $27 for 2 on lunch again after that.

Scott S.

Yelp
I like the sandwiches here, the style reminds of Jersey Mike's cold sandwiches with the oil, vinegar, shredded lettuce and soft white bread. There are not a ton of options, but there are enough. The missing stars from me are because the punch card ("purchase 10 sandwiches and the 11th is on us!") gets arbitrarily credited. I often buy 2 sandwiches in a visit, and about half the time when I buy a pair they'll give me just one punch instead of two on the card, even when I point it out. I'd still buy the product without the punch card incentive, but it makes me feel slightly ripped off each time it happens.

Yelp
Picked up sandwiches from here. Bread was a bit underwhelming. I like typical French crusty bread, this was chewy. Deli meat and veggies was standard. Nothing special. Hot peppers were average. Humboldt House still is my #1 sandwich shop in the neighborhood. This place is fine for convenience.

Yelp
One of the better sandwiches I have found in chicago! Great bread, thin cut meat (but not skimpy servings) and fresh flavor. The little bar next to it - the walk in I believe - was also so fun. Highly recommend and I will be going
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches at great prices inside this liquor store/ deli. My favorite is the tuna salad sandwich. Friendly attentive safe service.
google avatar

Jay D.

Yelp
Great sandwiches, super friendly staff too Only complaint is bread could be softer If you come at end of the day the bread gets a little hard
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
Love they added the sandwich counter. Really convenient and affordable. My new favorite italian and the potato salad is solid.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Highly recommend the deli sandwiches. Bread has a nice crispy crust and ingredients were very fresh.

Laura J.

Yelp
Masks optional (owner at register, not enforcing customers). Won't be returning. They do have a nice selection but vibe was hostile and disrespectful on recent trip. Many other places to get alchol where you can count of basic protocol being followed until we're out of this mess.
google avatar

Yelp
This liquor store has a solid selection of spirits, beers, and wines available. I've stopped in a few times to pick up some items, and I almost always find what I am looking for. The store is clean and spacious. The prices for items are sometimes exactly the same as other liquor stores in the area, but other times they are a couple dollars more than other stores. Red Star is a safe choice if you are in the area and need to pick up some alcoholic beverages to drink at home. If you plan on being out at night, I highly suggest checking out the bar that is connected to the store (The Walk in).

Romeo Q.

Yelp
Who would've guessed! Delicious sandwiches, reminiscent of Hero's on Addison, at this wonderful liquor store. We loved the red star club, caprese, turkey, and prosciutto sandwiches. Try it out.

Kyle S.

Yelp
My quality of life score went through the roof when this place started making these sandwiches.

Mike B.

Yelp
The sandwiches from the deli are exceptional. As a newbie to Chicago I'm to be a regular customer. Cheap but heavy on the meats.
google avatar

Gisela C.

Yelp
Hello been going here for years and they are Awesome people. SAM the owner is a great guy n his brother as well. They own other places on the same block that you should visit like the Harding Tavern we love going there great service...
google avatar

Jake B.

Yelp
This place has gone from a nice local store with a great selection of bourbon and beer to an awful liquor store with terribly priced bourbon that straight up price gouges. They are selling allocated bottles of bourbon that normally retail for $24.99 for $199.99! For the particular bottle I'm talking about, that's almost 4 times the secondary value of it! Looks like this store is more interested in gouging all the affluent people that moved into the condos along Milwaukee than developing relationships with and taking care of their regular customers. AVOID AVOID AVOID this terrible liquor store.
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
This store has a special place in my heart. The owners are always really nice and went out of their way to order the beer that I like, even though no one else buys it. They remember who I am and always say hello whenever I stop in or pass by on the street. My love for this store boils down to two simple facts...(1) if there were a blizzard and I had no food I could walk up to Red Star and buy frozen pizzas, beer, chips, and Ben & Jerry's and (2) they give away free limes with the purchase of beer and I think that's cute.
google avatar

Yelp
Whoa! A place on Milwaukee Ave northwest of The Monument that sells Brooklyn Brewery beer? And not only that but it was 12-count variety pack! If thats not an indication of the changing neighborhood, I don't know what is. (But all cynical, anti-yuppy sentiments aside - I was seriously impressed with the selection of foodstuffs considering what a small space it is. its on my radar when I'm in that neck of the woods.)
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Me gusta este lugar!!! esta en el camino llendo a casa. I see hipsters going in this place more and more everyday. nice clean place with a awesoem guy at the register.

Yelp
Being there last night reminded me how much I missed living right down the street from a liquor store, especially a place like this. The guys here are definitely characters. One of them is very social with you about who knows what, but at the same time never looks at you directly in the eyes. He also has some of the most bizarre, scribbled handwriting ever. Another one is overly nice and every single time I left has told be to be safe as though something bad is going to happen. But the place itself has pretty good selection of beers. The have more microbrews (Bells, Three Floyds, Half Acre, Brooklyn Brewery) than you would think a small liquor store would, plus they tend to change them up and bring in new ones. It does get a little bit pricey sometimes but I still went there much more than Tianguis right across the street. I feel like I did that even for food just because Tianguis is an overpriced piece of junk. They totally recognize you and become even more friendly if you get be a regular. Also, $6 minimum for credit.

Yelp
Since Red Star moved one storefront north on Milwaukee Ave to make room for El Pollo Loco it's become a pleasant place to buy the necessities. Especially if you want to catch up on neighborhood happenings with the clerk. A good deal is a 12 pack of Lacrosse Lager bottles for $6.99. Wine selection is decent. They also have toilet paper, Kraft macaroni and cheese and cat food. Open late and 100 feet from my house.
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood establishment for locals. It's been my one-stop shop for liquor since I moved to Logan. The guys that work the cashier are always very nice and very helpful if I have any questions. What I've always been the most impressed with is their beer selection! They carry a wide selection of craft beer and they even tend to get the seasonal beers in! As I'm from Colorado they tend to carry a lot of beers from home which always brings a little cheer to my life. Definitely enjoy the beer selection. Their wine is a little pricey, so keep that in mind. HIghly recommend this place for locals, its the best selection you'll find in Logan.
google avatar

Kara C.

Yelp
Pretty good selection of beer and liquor for the neighborhood but $16 for a six pack of Alpha King? No thanks. Will make the trek to Binny's for better prices on good beer.
google avatar

Sachi P.

Yelp
Isaac is the best part about Red Star. He is kind and helpful and always nice to chat with when you're picking up a cheap 12 pack on the way to a BBQ. They have beer, wine, milk, canned soups, etc. I miss living around the corner.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
A fine neighborhood liquor store with a good selection of wine and beers. I purchased a few bottles of Liberty school wine and the owner and I chatted for a moment about it and expressed interest in it and how he needed to have it himself. A nice conversation. Had my beers I wanted in a easy to reach location. Recommended!
google avatar

Leonard P.

Yelp
I'm almost reluctant to write a review of Red Star, since it's currently undergoing a major renovation, so let me preface this by saying: review subject to change once they finish their big expansion, which looks to include a tap room and everything. That said, it's a decent liquor store -- good price and a friendly helpful face behind the counter, okay booze selection and above-average beer for decent prices. Crown is a lot better, but this place is close by and seemingly always open. We'll see where they're headed down the road.
google avatar

Craig B.

Yelp
Not a bad selection for what looks like a shitty liquor store. They've got your stable 40's, Mad Dog, and $2 Popov Vodka... but they also have a small selection of non-Busch-brand beers, psuedo micro-brews, a half-decent (albiet small) wine selection, and an ok liquor wall. It's not sketchy at all inside (can't say that for some of the other liquor stores in the immediate vicinity) and it's super convenient for aspiring alcoholic L commuters.
google avatar

Jesus F.

Yelp
The most friendly liquor store in Logan Square and easily one of my favorite spots in Chicago. Sometimes I'll stop in just to shoot the breeze with the guys. They are always fun to chat with. They have a huge selection of Beer and Wine, great people, and a laid back vibe. A little kindness goes a long way, something most liquor store owners seem to forget these days. These guys will make you feel welcome.
google avatar

Nicholas R.

Yelp
This place is a further walk from my apartment than another liquor store, but I choose the Red Star because of the sweet, sweet service behind the counter. Dudes love to bullshit with you. They always let me know if some new beer has come back in stock (read: Bells) and tell me to be safe. I'm a grown ass man, but I must smell like a sailor when I'm in there because they're always concerned for my well being. I must say it feels pretty alright knowing those guys have my back. Oh yeah, chick-o-sticks are right on the counter for only a quarter. Needless to say, I rarely leave with any change.
google avatar

Scott K.

Yelp
What a fantastic little liquor store. I do not live in the area, but traveled to Red Star to find a particularly rare and increasingly difficult to find scotch. Not only did I find what I was looking for, but the gentleman at the counter was courteous and fun. For a small, independent liquor store, the prices are really quite reasonable. In fact, for some bourbons and scotches, their prices actually beat Binny's. I'll definitely be back, not only because I like to patronize small businesses, but also because it's a great little operation.
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
Nice guy as all have said and it's a block from my house so I'm a fan.
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
As everyone else has mentioned, the Red Star Guy is so awesome. I once heard him tell a kid he was "buying too much fucking candy" while simultaneously calling the cops on some dude outside while ALSO simultaneously talking about how he left his wife's purse in his mother's car and he was going to have to get it back somehow. I swear to God. Their beer selection isn't great, but what do you excect? I remember Red Star Guy promising that with the next location (one store north) they were gonna have "everything. I mean, even frozen food 'n shit."
google avatar

laura heather h.

Yelp
The corner shop with all the chips and drinks I need. Nothing unbelievable, but perfect for my convenience needs. The brother of the guy that owns Cafe con Leche is usually there and he is super nice as well as all the other employees. My favorite experience there was one day that the upstairs neighbor girls needed something.... maybe scratch tickets? and lowered a bucket for the cashier to complete the transaction. Superb service!
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
Really good prices on 40s and a few other kinds of alcohol (hard liquor isn't too bad here surprisingly). And as everyone else has noted the staff are a hoot. The hyper guy is just NUTS. He will talk your ear off if you let him. Very clean, considering the kind of people who patronize the shop (e.g. me)
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
A nicer cleaner convenience stor, may not have the selection of a pure liquor store, but sells cold beer. One of the nicer convenient stores compared to the dingy messes in logan square. The workers are characters, but nice. Only the 7 Eleven is nicer and cleaner, but thats on Fullerton and Milwaukee, so depending on your location that may not be convenient...
google avatar

Nic N.

Yelp
Decent wine selection, open relatively late, and the staff is always friendly....what else do you need???
google avatar

Alan C.

Yelp
A small and cheap little liquor store. Their selection of cheap booze is key. They have a ton of Mad Dog 20/20 flavors for like $3. Awesome.
google avatar

Nana H.

Yelp
The guy who runs it is awesome- i feel like he needs to have his own sidcom. He makes jokes and is pretty nice ( in a non-sketchy creepy way) They close right before milwakee gets creepy, so you can get your alkie and jog home before the real sketch balls come out.
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
Thumbs up from me. Open late enough, super close to home, prices aren't totally insane, the counter guy let me buy my soda despite being a quarter short and seemed surprised that I paid him back the next time. Quality!
google avatar

Adam S.

Yelp
Friendly, alert employees, and a very decent selection for the size of the place. Well-run, local, and not overpriced. A great little shop.
google avatar

J L.

Yelp
Not a lot new to contribute here just another person chiming in saying this place is really nice. The guy I think is the owner is great, and the 2 guys most often running the counter are also pros. They're nice, they do a good job, they deal with the not insignificant riff raff as well as the (guilty as charged) hipster craft beer types, and do a remarkable job of balancing both. I'm glad both elements are there and don't mind waiting a bit more for it. Been there at least once a week for some time now, not a single complaint. Get your Pabst 30 pack, get your Modelo, Fat Tire, Half Acre, nice wine selection, good, affordable, same with the harder booze, they have whatever you need, cheap to snobby, fair prices. Proper liquor store.

N W.

Yelp
My comrades and I get nothing but greatest vodka here. All part of glorious plan to make Stalin fearless leader once more. Don't tell KGB, but the capitalist pig brew selection most glorious as well.
google avatar

jason t.

Yelp
clean, cheap liquor store with a good selection. the guy that works there is a total "character".
google avatar

Natalie J.

Yelp
decent prices, good selection of tall boys, three varieties of bali shag tobacco, and louis has my vote for best moustache in chicago. i like this place and frequent it often, probably too often.
