Where the Issaquah Alps’ mining past meets lush second-growth forest. Choose mellow loops, Coal Creek Falls, or longer links; Trailhead Direct has served this area in recent seasons. Regularly recommended by local hiking clubs. No pass required.

Lush forest, well maintained trails and excellent signage for trails. This mountain pays homage to the mining industry that was there at one point. Pay attention to the signs that talk about all the abandoned mines. Aging shafts can cave in, so important to stay on trails. Be careful not to step on the locals/ the banana slugs. Loved it. Would definitely go again!

Huge place with many adjoining trails in one area. Can get lost. The coal creek falls are supposed to be in this area but I nor many others were there looking for the falls with no luck. There’s bears and cougars and more wildlife so the dog may run off if not on a leash and it’s too big of a place for them or you to get lost. I couldn’t find any creeks or streams either which would have been nice for cooling off . Plenty of parking. Port o pod died no real restrooms. Lots of continuous uphill walking.

This trail is well-marked and easy to follow, which I appreciated. However, it was extremely quiet, and I didn’t encounter any other hikers, which made it feel a bit isolated. While there were a few glimpses of wildlife, the scenery was a bit underwhelming, and I had hoped for more impressive views.

It’s a quiet, clean and nice trail. It’s a good place to bring kids too and there is parking available. Not a typical water fall hike. Good for fun hikes, walks, or running.

Great trail ( the little that we took) we had several Littles in our group. Almost packed the jogging stroller but glad I didnt- not stroller friendly! But easy enough for a 3 yr old to explore and climb the steps etc. Parking can get tight

Beautiful trail. I’d give it a 1/5 in terms of difficulty. There are a few different trails which are all interconnected. Would recommend to go on a few different ones as each one is unique. The trail can get a little muddy if you’re going after rain. There are a couple of waterfalls in this network of trails

Simply the greatest place to take the family for a hike. We loved coming here to get outdoors and indulge in what Washington has to offer. Don't miss the Coal Creek mine shaft and storyboard.

Hidden gem. So close to the city, yet very peaceful and well maintained. Easy but have enough up and down to let your heart rate rise. Perfect for exercising for both for less active person and athletes whose want to run the trail.

Yelp
Fantastic area to walk/hike (mild) near Bellevue/Issaquah/and Renton. This is just one of more than one trailhead and/or entrance to the Coal Creak area. There is also some entry to the Tiger Mountain area. If you take the Red Town trail, then you can view parts of the old coal mine (I mean, really, "parts," like very minimal parts - but still very cool - one thing not minimal is the giant maw that signals an air shaft); and there is a lovely waterfall - particularly if you consider it's about five minutes from the road - that's pretty awesome. The trail is well maintained, and the parking lot does get full, yet we did not find it "crowded" on the trail, per se. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Very busy trail specially during the weekends. This is where most people park when going on a hike for Coal Creek Falls or North Folk Falls. So, this hike area is for all types of hikers: novis and advanced. Small children are ok with this hike. Lots of early morning runners too. And of course feel free to bring your furry friends We got here before 8am to find a parking spot, at 10am it was fully packed. So consider that. Oh! And also don't leave valuables in your car, sadly this area is famous for car break ins. Other than that the views are pretty!!! Coal Creek Falls are pretty (but crowded) and the Cougar Mt Lookout is small but worth it. Enjoy!!!

Yelp
This is where I park to when I want to go on the Coal Creek Hiking Trail. The main parking area can get full pretty quickly, especially on the weekend, but there is a side parking area. The trailhead is a good spot to start your hike on the trail. The nice thing is you go uphill first then get to come downhill once you get to where you want to turn around. I usually take the trail to the waterfall (it isn't huge), walk around that area, then come back to the trailhead.
