Casual Neighborhood Bistro Little Beast Plans to Expand to Penn Quarter - Eater DC

"He says he’s close to finalizing a lease for a new site to relocate the cafe and cupcake shop nearby. The space is a little smaller — 1,300 vs. 2,000 square feet now — so there won’t be room to make pizza. Gordon wouldn’t give a specific address because the deal hasn’t closed, but he says it will be near Zaytinya." - Tierney Plumb

Google
Love Red Velvet Cupcakery. When my family stayed in Washington DC for a week for vacation, we stopped at the bakery every night for desert.

Google
Purchased one of their daily special cupcakes which looked delicious. It was a mint cake with chocolate frosting. The frosting to cake ratio was spot on and the texture of the cake was great, incredibly moist. The biggest disappointment was in the flavors. The frosting had minimal chocolate flavor and I would have never guessed the cake was mint if they hadn't said so.

Google
I thought then did a great job either the combinations of flavors. The cupcakes were moist even at the end of day. The frosting was the perfect amount. Too much ruins it. I’d eat here again.

Google
Red Velvet Cupcakes is located within another establishment. Which meant that they were open earlier than 11:30am, which was a good thing but I did not like the fact that it did not smell like cupcakes when I walked in😔. My inner PhatGurl was let down!!!

Google
Left: Caramel Latte Cupcake (dollop of caramel in the center) -- moist but prob wouldn't get it again (too much frosting). Right: S'mores Cupcake -- 😍😍😍. AMAAAAAAZING! I love s'nores so this was right up my alley! Definitely would get this again! Downfall, no place to sit and enjoy...you have to go next door to the neighboring coffee spot but not a lot of seating there either. 😕

Google
I pre-ordered a dozen cupcakes for an event—only to have Red Velvet cancel the order 36 hours before the celebration. The explanation given was ‘they couldn’t fulfill the order,’ but it’s hard to understand why a cupcake shop wouldn’t have a dozen cupcakes available, especially when ordered well in advance. Very disappointing since Red Velvet Cupcakery is specifically what the guest of honor requested instead of a traditional cake. PS Also surprised to see significantly fewer flavors on the menu than in years past, when the Chinatown location was still open.

Had the most warm and professional reception fron Angel at this location today. This is NOT EASY during the evening

Cupcake menu. I’ve only tried two so far but B-Day was my fave.

Yelp
We haven't had these in a long time and were pleasantly reminded of the quality of these cupcakes. Light and fluffy. Just the right size. We had the B-Day with almond cake and a light chocolate ganache and The Devil's food cake was moist, and the dark chocolate frosting had a smooth finish. Delicious!

Yelp
Reading the other reviews in recent times, I agree with the lack of presentation and taste of cupcakes offered. I found Red Velvet Cupcakery through the Too Good to Go app that aims to cut down on food waste. The service offers discounted local area store food that otherwise goes to waste and also helps discover many small business restaurants. I am glad I purchased the cupcakes at a discounted price instead of $4/cupcake or $24+ tax. The cupcakes were underwhelming in presentation. The taste and texture wasn't exactly the best. Some of the cupcakes looked like someone else was about to eat it but changed their mind because the cupcake shell was peeled off. The white frosting was runny and tasted oddly sour. The bottom half of the cupcakes were very dry and stale. I ended up throwing away most of it. I get it that these cupcakes were meant to be thrown out or otherwise given away for free. I just didn't expect the items to taste accordingly. I have no idea how long ago these cupcakes were made despite the claim that it is baked fresh daily. Whatever the case is, I won't be returning and I wouldn't recommend it for my friends and family. There are so many other wonderful small business bakeries in the area with higher quality presentations and taste. Sad to say this wasn't it.

Yelp
Picked up half dozen cupcakes from here- Oreo, carrot, and vanilla. The cupcakes were decent, but my the most aesthetically pleasing. Of the three flavors I tried, my favorite was the Oreo. The chocolate cake was not too sweet and had a strong dark coco flavor. I also loved the fact that it didn't have too much frosting! I hate when the ratio of frosting to cake is 1:1 and gets cloyingly sweet. It was the perfect amount of frosting. The carrot cake was also moist with flavorful cream cheese frosting. Vanilla cupcake was ok- not that much vanilla flavor. The cupcakes were a little bit on the pricier side, especially because they look more like no frill cupcakes. However, the staff was friendly and great. It was quick pick up with sturdy packaging.

Yelp
Cupcakes looked nice, but were dry and flavorless. Was told they were baked today, but this was hard to believe.
google avatar

Antwan W.

Yelp
Cupcakes were just ok in my opinion but my family thought otherwise. They really enjoyed them. Maybe it was the one that I had (vanilla bean). To me, it tasted really cornbread like. And a lot of my cupcake stuck to the paper wrapping. I'm not a real cake fan but I definitely know great dessert when I taste it.
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
Came here for their vegan cupcakes. The cupcake itself was very good and moist. What I didn't love was the frosting. I thought it was a little too sweet for my taste but might be perfect for someone who really likes sweets.

Yelp
Best service ever. We stan these cupcake geniuses. Give them your business, give them your money, give over your soul to the cupcakes. Quote: "literally my favorite cupcakes" -satisfied customer

Yelp
Yummmm, sweet and packed with flavor! I wanted something sweet and saw the sign for Red Velvet Cupcakes. I choose the signature cupcake, vanilla cupcake and carrot cake cupcake. Of course I didn't all them all myself. My family enjoyed them all! The kids are begging me to go get more! Will be returning. For half a dozen I paid $20

Yelp
Blink and you'll miss this place, and you'll be missing out on some deliciousness! Set snugly beside Little Beast, this place serves up some moist and tasty cupcakes. I got a half dozen, two chocolate, two vanilla and two carrot cake walnut. Yes, I know - how do you go to a place called Red Velvet Cupcakery and not get a red velvet cupcake?? I dunno but these little babies were calling out to me. Moist, smooth, with creamy icing plopped on top, it was a tasty set of treats that didn't last more than a few moments. This place has different cupcakes every day, so you gotta try it out on different days. Give it a try!

Yelp
3.5 stars. The set up is quite interesting in that it shared space with Bakers and Baristas and it's quite small and narrow. If six people walked in at the same time, it would be hard to move around. When I arrived, the store was empty and after a few minutes, I began to wonder if it was a set up because even though I called out a few times, no one responded. An attendant finally showed up, apologized and said it was busy on the other side (i.e. @ Bakers and Baristas). I picked up half a dozen cupcakes and this will cost you $20 (-tax). 3.5 stars because stores should not be unattended, the cupcakes are rather small for the price point and there was only one gluten-free selection option.
google avatar

Samantha T.

Yelp
The cupcakes are the perfect size. They are very tasty and nicely decorated. Great for personal dessert or to add the finishing touch to an events dessert table. Reasonable prices and the staff is always very helpful.
google avatar

Kerri C.

Yelp
I tried a few kinds of cupcakes- the chocolate on chocolate, the almond cupcake with chocolate and the cookies and cream. The chocolate icing is delicious- creamy, chocolatey and perfect, the vanilla icing is good. The chocolate cake is okay, could be a little more moist, but the almond cake is exceptional (if you like almond). However, I cannot justify the price of these cupcakes even if they are delicious. They're the size of a normal sized cupcake!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, especially after having a dinner that left more to be desired. I should've paid heed to my fellow yelpers. I was wandering around the downtown area looking for some dessert when I came across a Red Velvet cupcake store. There were a few accolades and the cupcakes looked delicious so I was optimistic. I ordered the "Southern Belle," which was their signature red velvet cupcake. On the first bite, I was already saying "no, no, no" in my head and wishing I had a cupcake from my favorite cupcake spot back in California, Cupcakin' Cupcakery. The cupcake tasted like it had been refrigerated- it was not moist, cake texture was off, frosting was a little too sweet. I ate what I could and tossed the rest in the trash, disappointed at the $3.50 I couldn't get back. I should've tried the vanilla bean flavor...it actually looked better. Oh well- you win some, you lose some.

Yelp
I enjoy the signature red velvet cupcake named Southern Belle; been buying it for quite a while. RVC's buttercream frosting is not overly sweet, which I favor. Also, Mexican Hot Chocolate is one that I like a lot, if it's available. I agree with others that inventory can run low. And sometimes the cupcake can be a little too dry, but overall I've had good luck. The box that cupcakes can be placed into for travel/safekeeping is sturdy, useful and attractive; that's important to me. The owner, Aaron Gordon, is an interesting force in the restaurant biz in DC. He's opened and closed several ventures however RVC has proved durable; it's in its 11th year of operation in Penn Quarter, so can be classified as a fixture. Gordon's newest bistro, Little Beast, features RVC's baked goodies.

Yelp
Ok. Presentation was lackluster. Cupcakes were over filled in cups. Delivery was ok. One cupcakes was flipped over. Expected better quality and presentation for the price.

Yelp
Homemade?....Yes! Rivaling the best, of the best in the DMV!?....No!! I came here with some friends, after the Wizards game at the Capital One Arena, looking to satisfy the sweet tooth. I should of known by the dismal selection alone, the situation was about to get hectic. There were only about 5 flavors to choose from, with their signature Southern Belle (Red Velvet) as one of the options. I chose to dive in on a Red Velvet and Cookies n' Cream. So, let's just get straight to the point shall we??....Both were marginal in flavor and borderline grocery store/Costco in taste. I was really disappointed in the Red Velvet which was dry, tethering stale and had no true southern taste of that buttermilk ting or chocolate bite one looks for in a red velvet cupcake. Also, the crown of the cupcake was hard --crunchy like toast! I mean com'on folks. If you're gonna bare the name "Red Velvet" as a storefront....then you need to "bring it" at least on this cupcake for sure. And, the flavor needs to be "on point".....as if Grandma stuck her crusty foot all up in the cake batter!! What saved this poor thing was the cream-cheese icing. It made it at least palatable and easy to swallow. As for the Cookies n' Cream cupcake. The cake itself was dense-moist, but once again I was robbed on the flavor tip. Also, it was a bit too sweet. Overall, 2 1/2 Stars! I haven't been to Red Velvet in years and it seems the impression it left on me back then...is still the same. In the past, the cupcakes were okay to Meh. Nothing to write home about, but at least better than this experience. Also, the price point is steep! I paid over $7 for two tiny cupcakes the size of a Hostess mini-cake. As much as I want it to be, this place is just not stacking up to be anything amazing or a thumbs up for me. This visit and several others in the past has confirmed that. Will not be returning that's for sure. Don't get me wrong here, the cupcakes are not bad or awful. On a good day, at best, they are just average and should be a lot better for the price. I will admit tho, one thing that hasn't change and that they are consistent on...is the basic "uninspiring" flavor options. Compared to other cupcakeries around the city....I think it's time for a makeover and upgrade on the types of cupcakes offered and creativity. Simple red velvet, devils food, peanut butter and vanilla cupcakes...leaves nothing to be desired imho or definitely doesn't warrant for a repeat visit from this place....compared to what you can sink your teeth into at Baked n' Wired, Sprinkles, or even Georgetown Cupcakes....to name a few! I mean Google or Instagram Sugar Vault in DC...Thank me later!! Perhaps this is the reason....why I think I haven't been here in years! Too many better options!! You think!??

Yelp
This has become one of my favorites. I make a point to stop here every time I go to DC. I love the chocolate with the gold leaf. It makes me feel fancy. This was also one of the only places I could find gluten free cupcakes for my friend, so it became our pitstop together. Their frosting is perfect! I don't like overly sweet frosting and theirs is incredibly buttery and creamy. Great cake consistency. Are there better cupcake places in DC? Maybe... but I enjoy these cupcakes... and every place has their own twist on cupcakes. The staff is always great... and it is a convenient location. For people with celiac, sometimes the options are limited.

Yelp
This was my first time hear in DC. I was disappointed that all of the Red Velvet cupcakes were all sold out. As you can tell the other cupcakes...a little lonely and not selling as well. I tried that chocolate cupcake and it was descent. However, you just can't beat a red Velvet cupcake. I hope they will make more Red Velvet and less of the others since folks come here solely for the Red Velvet CupCakes. Better luck next time

Yelp
After a long day of travel, metro riding, talking, humming along, and being awestruck at you and wondering when I would wake up from this dream- all you really need is a cupcake huh?? I walked past this spot several times in the past (Awesomecon trip, Capitals game, Wizards game, Steve, and NYE) and wanted to give it a go sometime. That time provided a worth the wait type experience. Was sort of disappointed because they were out of certain flavors of cupcakes. I would've liked to try the peanut butter and a carrot cake but being there so late in the evening they were out did try the regular red velvet cupcake and the special which was a strawberry type of red velvet that had a small piece of strawberry on top of the pink icing. Pricing is a little bit steep I believe it was $3.50 per cupcake but considering the location of this place you're going to pay a premium as it's right around the corner from the capital one arena and Chinatown with other local hotspots and government buildings. Ordered a couple cupcakes to for me two for you two waters and went outside to find a sitting place to enjoy them. Sitting on the steps of the building and popping open the box while sipping the water was storm clouds rolling overhead right at dusk and the lights coming off of the arena was one of the best and call the experiences I've had in DC to date The cupcakes were very moist the icing was an order didn't have a film to it whatsoever and even though they were your standard size cupcake they packed a big punch in terms of flavor and also moisture in the velvet red cupcake was your standard issue the icing was very very good and the strawberry special that I had also gone with was very very tasty and the icing was almost too good to be true. I would definitely recommend this place as a possible once ever you have a couple of trips to DC depending on your cash flow but if you have the green this is a very good place to spend it and to alleviate those sweet tooth aches
google avatar

Yelp
No complaints here! It's a cupcakery that sells yummy cupcakes that aren't the best in the world, but can get the job done (satisfying a sweet tooth). It's a small space where all you can do is order some cupcakes, grab them, and go. They have a setup with the next door coffee shop where you can bring your goods there to consume. I enjoyed the White Velvet and Southern Belle. Try these 2 out for a great time!
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Two words: Moist deliciousness. If you are a red velvet cake fan you'll love their red velvet cupcakes. Their signature cupcake "Southern Bell" has a delicious whipped cream cheese topping and moist red velvet cake really stands out. I also like that they have sugar free version called "Northern Beauty" which good but not as decadent. Pros: Vegan cupcakes Gluten free cupcakes Sugar free cupcakes Featured flavor cupcakes - My favorite is their salted caramel. Cons: $4.00 for featured flavor cupcakes. That's pretty pricey! Sometimes their cake is a little dry and crumbly.
google avatar

Stacy P.

Yelp
Red Velvet offers a quick sweet Gluten Free/Vegan treat. You pretty have 4 choices in terms of cupcake, either a White Velvet or Black Velvet cupcake, and then a choice of with a vanilla "buttercream" or chocolate "buttercream" Personally, the best combination is the white velvet with chocolate topping. The black velvet has a bit of a bitter taste, where as the vanilla buttercream is extremely sweet and has a funky after taste. The gluten free/vegan options are considered a specialty, so expect to pay a bit more. Currently, they will set you back $4. **Tip - Red Velvet Cupcakery is a small shop that consists of a counter and the cupcakes, so there is no seating inside.

Yelp
This was a recommendation from a friend who loves cupcakes and I love her for it. Red Velvet is the best cupcake spot in the Washington, DC area. Every cupcake is amazing even the basic "vanilla bean" one. I've never had an issue with inventory running low and I've been early in the morning, mid day, and right before closing. Parking is a beast but because service is pretty quick you can double park and run in.

Yelp
A friend told me to get a cupcake in DC while I was there. A cupcake??? Ok then. So on the way to the airport our driver suggested this place. There was a line at 2pm. He said it's pretty long at lunch. I found out why. I do not know what they use or whats in the water in DC but these were the best cupcakes!!!!!!! Red Velvet sounds sexy, well these little cakes sure are!! Thank you from Texas!

Yelp
I haven't been here in years... I used to be a faithful patron when I worked in DC, but I noticed the decline in taste over the past few years. Im not sure if there are different bakers throughout the week, but the quality of the cupcakes that I grew to love, have not been consistent. Overall, you'll get a good decent cupcake...but if you only knew how they tasted a few years ago, your bottom jaw would drop in the middle of 7th and E street. Tip: always ask about their featured cupcake..my favorite one to date is the sweet potato cupcake (i believe it was served with cream cheese icing). This is usually offered during thanksgiving. Also, if you're ever indecisive about which cupcake to choose, obviously go for the name sake cupcake a.k.a southern belle. Also, their gluten free cupcakes are actually delicious when served fresh.
google avatar

Shandelle B.

Yelp
This is a tiny little cupcake shop in D.C. that only got my business because they were open so late. They get two stars because they had a gluten free option. The employee that assisted me wasn't very friendly. I thought the cupcake would be a redeeming factor, but it was dry and crumbly. It tasted like it had sat out in the case for a few days.
google avatar

Kia M.

Yelp
I'm not a big cake fan but I have my cravings from time to time. I've been going to this Cupcakery for years and they never seem to disappoint! Cupcakes are always nice and moist and the icing is always perfect. I've tried various flavors but I think the southern belle (red velvet) and carrot cake are my favorite two. One thing I would love is for the Oreo cupcake to come in vanilla cake with an Oreo icing! Now that would be love. Customer service is always great as well, no complaints here. Until next time...
google avatar

Carroll N.

Yelp
I was still hungry after dinner at Shake Shack and my sister and I had time to kill before a concert so we stopped by this bakery. The Featured Cupcake was completely gone. I asked the associate which flavors were most popular and she said the Devil's Food followed by the Vanilla Bean so I got the Devil's Food. The frosting was creamy, but the cake was dry to me. The flavorcompared to other cupcake bakeries is not extensive, but then again the shop is smaller. The associate was very friendly. I would definitely come back to try other flavors next time I am down this way at Capital One.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife has the sweet tooth so we stopped here for a little dessert on our way to coffee. The service was horrendous (rude, pushy and rushed and a lack of sanitary conditions) and the place was a mess (trashcan overflowing and flies actually hanging out over it). It's a tiny little place that may be amazing at times other than a Saturday evening, but tonight amazing was not in the cards. That said, my wife loved the cupcake so it bumped up to three stars because she's adorable when she gets a delicious dessert :)
google avatar

Sindhu G.

Yelp
Let me begin this by saying that the White Velvet cupcake was delicious!! It had just the right amount of sweetness and moistness that is found on a good cupcake. The cupcake had the right amount of frosting for the amount of cupcake present, which is why I hesitate whilst rating this restaurant. However, the decor was not necessarily present - it was very crowded and there was not much room, and since I went on a Saturday evening, there wasn't much room to stand. I also found the cashier to be slightly rude - the room was not very large and the cashier rolled her eyes several times as I asked for assistance, which I was personally not a fan of. Additionally, the cookies and creme cupcake had no discernible flavors distinguishing it from a regular chocolate cupcake save for a small oreo garnish. Overall, the saving grace for this place was the white velvet cupcake. Do try that if you visit!
google avatar

Yelp
I wanted to discover a new cupcake shop and happened to stumble upon Red Velvet Cupcakery. A small bakery located in Penn Quarter next door to the coffee shop Baker's & Baristas. We encountered no lines on a Sunday afternoon. After looking at all our options in the glass case, we decide quickly on the Devils Food and Hazelnut cupcakes. One bite into my hazelnut cupcake, and I was disappointed. It tasted like a muffin with over the top sweetened frosting. No hint of hazelnut, in my opinion. My fiance's devils food cupcake was rich and good, but nothing to rave about. Overall, I feel like there's plenty of better cupcake shops in the District and this one is forgettable.
google avatar

Chirantan N.

Yelp
Located in Chinatown, this cupcake shop definitely feels a bit hole in the wall (for better or worse). It was very crowded for the space when we arrived. There is no real decor element to the space - perhaps not as much an aesthetically pleasing date spot as, say, baked and wired or district doughnut in Georgetown. That being said, the cupcakes were not bad and reasonably priced. I got the cookies and cream cupcake, which tasted good with the buttercream frosting. I didn't really get that much of the Oreo flavor from the cupcake however- it mostly felt like a chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting. Not bad overall but I would not go out of my way to come back here.
google avatar

Yelp
Stayed at an Airbnb for my visit in DC and went here several times! They have a great selection of hot teas and amazing cupcakes. I tried the carrot cake and birthday cupcakes. So so good. Not too sweet and super flavorful!
google avatar

Yelp
On my quest to try every cupcakery in the District, I've now had Red Velvet twice. The first time, a friend had ordered a dozen cupcakes and the Southern Belle (aka a red velvet cupcake) was great. However, it seems that only their catered cupcakes have anything going for them, as the cupcakes in store are dry. The gluten-free white cupcake was probably the most mediocre cupcake I've had all year...and it was dry. Nothing hurts a southern boy's feelings like a dry, bland cupcake. When I put my fork into it, I heard a loud "crunch!" The icing was also hard, and the whole cupcake tasted as if it could have come from any grocery store bakery. They have a nice little storefront and, as others have commented, it's really small inside. There is a single high top table in the corner, but not one iota of seating, so you've got to grab your cupcake and go. They don't have a huge flavor selection, although it's great that they offer two gluten-free options and a sugar-free selection as well. These options earned them an additional star. I guess I might consider Red Velvet if I'm catering a dozen or so in for someone, but if I'm just in the mood for a cupcake, like I was today, I'll definitely pass.

Yelp
As I stated before, I don't give one star reviews easily. From the service and cupcakes this place deserves 0 stars honestly. After having a delicious lunch at Luke's, I decided to pick some sweets. I entered and the place is very small. Very limited flavors. The first employee I saw, saw me, on the phone, ok but no gestures or any verbal communication on her end. She continues this for a few minutes and then another human being shows up and then it seems ok. I didn't like the options so I chose a vanilla cupcake and their special of the day, cherry jubilee. I reach the register and she has them on a napkin?! I told her, these are to go. She said oh I thought you wanted them now?! What give her that idea? My hands were full! My purse my lunch bag and my water? How could I carry two cupcakes on a napkin back to my office? Ok so she boxes them and tells me my total. I wasn't offered a loyalty card as my co worker remind me, so I asked for one. Got one and I left. Later on that, i divulge in my cupcakes. I close my eyes and sink my teeth and I'm disappointed. Vanilla cupcake was hard and stale. The cake portion very flavorless, no flavoring and it wasn't sweet. Cherry Jubilee was the worst cupcake known to life. Awful. The icings awful and stale. At this point, grocery or even Costco cupcakes would be so much better, and yes I should have read the Yelp reviews first. Baked n wired is so much better!!!
google avatar

Kevin G.

Yelp
Great cupcakes with an exceptionally sweet topping. The cakes are really dense which brings on a craving for some milk. We got there late in the evening, but there were still some good choices to choose from. If you have a sweet tooth and are out roaming the streets of the city stop in for a treat.
google avatar

R N.

Yelp
Peanut butter cupcake frosting had enough peanut butter taste and was not overly sweet. Cupcake was a bit dry. Devil's Food cupcake was chocolatey in both the frosting and cupcake. Again, the cupcake was a little dry. They weren't bad, but they're forgettable. I've had better cupcakes elsewhere but it's a convenient place to get cupcakes in the Galleryplace area.

Yelp
752 reviews.. and here's mine since I've been visiting since they opened. They are convenient and are usually reliable to satisfy a cupcake urge. I love checking out their featured flavor of the week (fig and olive oil, flourless chocolate cake and more!) Last time I visited they tried to steal my heart with a Dark and Stormy cupcake. Cupcakes by the flavor of my favorite drinks? Swooon! Sometimes they are inconsistent with cupcakes being dry, which I've taken away a star for. Nothing like feening for a cupcake and getting one and it's dry and unappetizing. I do love their variety for their featured flavors. My favorite permanent cupcake is the summer time cupcake (with coconut).

Yelp
I'm already plotting my next visit! This quaint and cute little shop is ah-mazing! Stopped in on a Wednesday afternoon and ordered 4 cupcakes (2 for moi and 2 for a coworker). First, I need to say that it was soooo hard to choose with all of the flavors staring back at me, buttttt I finally settled on a cookies and creme and a vanilla bean and got my coworker a cookies and creme and a southern belle. Both the cookies and creme and vanilla bean were on point! Seriously, the frosting was not overly sweet and the cake was soft and moist. Everything a cupcake should be! Oh and the vanilla bean had a little crispier edge than the cookies and creme that I freakin loved (not sure if this crispy edge is a norm, though). And their prices are VERY reasonable!! I will 100% be back to this little gem for more of their delicious sweet treats!! P.S. If you walk to/from here, as I did, you won't feel so bad after partaking in a cupcake, or two!

Yelp
What a cute place. For a late night snack after one of my favorite times with you there was a place to pick up something for our sweet tooth/teeth. It was honestly the size of my closet but don't let that count you out. They must sell out quickly and it looks like they have different cupcakes of the day and different types of red velvet cupcakes or white which is what I ordered. If I had to vote I would say that of course the red velvet cupcake was the best icing was beyond this world. They sell water which if you do buy one there's a coupon on the side so I would suggest keeping the bottle. I usually say pictures for yelp but I was so freaking hungry for this cupcake that I literally took no picture of it.

Yelp
I went to the Taste of DC this past weekend while here visiting DC. I had a really good cupcake so I was definitely in the mood for one again today! I was in the Penn Quarter area and decided to check out Red Velvet. I have pretty specific, but reasonable things I'm looking for when I have a cupcake- one of the most important for me being moist cake. Today I got a Cookies N Cream and a Devils Food cupcake from Red Velvet. The icing was decent but the cake was very dry on both cupcakes. If I were to have just had one (which I didn't because I'm a savage ) then I could chalk it up to a bad batch or something. But both were crumbly dry unfortunately. I used to live in DC and without mentioning the other places, there are some options I'd recommend over Red Velvet.

Yelp
We went with southern belle, how can you come here and not get its namesake? Very moist cupcake, and not overly red-colored. Frosting is awesome! Not too sweet, very cream-cheesy. Quick and delicious treat, worth a stop.

Yelp
It's been a while since I had cupcakes, so I decided to get some for my drunchies instead of going for some other fatty food. I walked in pretty late in the evening but there was still a lot of options left. I ultimately asked the lady behind the counter which was most popular. She recommended the red velvet (and we all laugh at the drunk girl for not getting the hint in the name of the place), so I walked out with that. I didn't expect much, and it was pretty small for its cost. The frosting was the best part. It was light yet tasty, and it wasn't overbearingly sweet. I also hate when cupcake places top on the icing as if it's its own thing. It should complement the cake itself, and this place pulled that off well by topping just enough for every bite but not putting too much. It'll hurt my wallet, but I'll definitely be back to try more.

Yelp
Conveniently located a short distance from either the Gallery Place (Red, Yellow, and Green lines) or Archives (Yellow and Green lines) Metro stops, this establishment is an area staple. Located next to Bakers and Baristas and across the street from Starbucks, this little shop is a great place to grab a quick treat and a cup of coffee (at either Bakers and Baristas or Starbucks). The cupcakes are of standard size and are reasonably priced. There are usually 8-10 options from which to pick, including a "cupcake of the day". There is very limited seating, so don't plan to hang around for an extended period of time. The champagne cupcake is a rare find. If you find it, give it a try.

Yelp
Fantastic little cupcake shop with reasonable prices! The namesake red velvet is quite good, but if you're only going to get one item, I suggest the cookie sandwich with buttercream filling. I can only eat half the time, so it's perfect for sharing, but it's cheap and absolutely unlike anything else you can find in the city. It kind of reminds me of the Mrs. Fields cookie sandwich! Last time I was here, a man behind me in line asked "are these better than Georgetown cupcakes?" I just laughed because there is literally no comparison. While Red Velvet may not the BEST Cupcakery in DC (that award goes to Sweet or baked & wired, depending on who you ask), these are by far the best cupcakes in downtown DC and at $3.25 each they are totally worth it to fill the need for cupcakes. All of this said, I recommend the place next door- same owner (so you can feel good about supporting a local business) but WAY better desserts! The chocolate caramel tart/cake is downright sinful.

Yelp
To satisfy a sweet tooth after dinner, our group opted to forgo dessert at the restaurant in order to stretch our legs and walk the short distance to the cupcake bakery we noticed was open until 10PM. Walking into this tiny establishment we were greeted by a friendly and welcoming staff. They had many cupcakes on display behind the glass in multiple varieties that were clearly marked. Those were the highlights unfortunately. The first reaction was that for $3.50 each, they certainly were small cupcakes. Think not a full sized cupcake as you would make at home for your kids or purchase at most other bakeries and not those mini, bite-sized cupcakes either, but something in between. For $20 you can get half a dozen which is a savings of a mere 22 cents or just under 5% per cupcake. It hardly seems like a bargain, but I could see that for a group of four how it appears to make sense to get two extra for the all in price of $22 (yes $22). Most importantly in the rating is the taste. After all, that is what we stopped in for as a means to satisfy that dessert craving. We ordered the specialty Devil's Food cup cake which was probably the best in terms of overall flavor with the moist chocolate cake covered in chocolate ganache icing. The Cookies & Cream was chocolate based with vanilla icing which was similar to the Black Velvet. Also ordered were the Peanut Butter Cup and the Vanilla Bean (vanilla with vanilla icing). All were average in taste and not the freshest or most moist cake as we had hoped. Between the lackluster taste that none of us claimed that we would soon rush back combined with the small size and high price I have rated Red Velvet Cupcakery with 2 stars....you can do better in this competitive environment.

Yelp
We were a little disappointed for the price we pay we expected the cupcakes to be fresh and they were hard and tasted old.

Yelp
Fast and efficient bakery in the Chinatown area Their cakes are cheaper than Georgetown cupcakes and less sweet which I like! One star off because their cakes were a bit dry but still loved their flavors and the fact that you get a free cupcake the next time when you buy a water bottle.

Yelp
Hands down the best Customer Service experience I've had in a long time. I ordered a dozen cupcakes through Uber Eats for a colleague's birthday. The order arrived promptly and I stashed the cupcakes away. A few hours later, I opened the box cupcakes...and it looked like the cupcakes were shaken like a snow globe. Pics attached. I was pretty upset and reached out to Red Velvet to rectify the situation. The Red Velvet manager - Steve -followed up immediately to help resolve the issue. He explained that the damage likely occurred during the delivery and I would have to contact Uber Eats for a refund. That made sense to me given the fact my delivery guy rode up on a bike with the cupcakes in tow. But to my surprise, Red Velvet offered to replace the cupcake with a fresh batch and he personally delivered the cupcakes to my office. I will absolutely be exclusively working with Red Velvet for future needs. Thank you Red Velvet!

Yelp
Cupcakes were overpriced, dry, and dense. I got a caramel latte cupcake which claimed to have caramel filling in the center, but all I found was a pea-sized amount that I would've missed if I wasn't looking so hard for it. The best part was the frosting but even that wasn't anything special. For $4 a cupcake, I was definitely let down. It would make more sense if the cupcake was bigger and priced 4 dollars but they were literally just a standard size and tasted like they came from a box mix. Coming from New York, I've had much better when it comes to cupcakeries. I say skip this one.
