It was like stepping back in time and thoroughly enjoyable!! We saw the 2004 Phantom of the Opera! The theatre was clean and all the workers were very accommodating volunteers. Patrons are able to participate in a 50/50 raffle drawn at intermission. The concessions are priced at 2000 prices or even lower! Lastly they offer tshirts and sweats reflecting the shows played. The only slight negative are the seats which are a tad uncomfortable. but the experience is worth it. We will return for sure!

Google
Second movie/play I've seen here. Wonderful theater. Reminds me of the movie theater that I grew up with. Highly recommend taking a look at their website and finding either an older movie to see here or a play. Watched Phantom of the Orpera and saw the live production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (I'm no longer a virgin, lol), 'because it's only a jump to the left and a step to the right.'

Sarah H.

Google
Phantom of the Opera was the most fantastic experience I have ever had in a theater. The organist was exquisite, until we actually saw her playing - I thought the overture was being played before the movie. We were able to enjoy her performances during the intermission as well. I am looking forward to our next visit πŸ’—

*Covers mouth* The hottest historic movie theatre in southeast Michigan is The Redford Theatre. This place has everything. An organ player working 17 sets of keys knobs and buttons like an astronaut preparing for lift off. An old timey marquee that makes you think you accidentally ended up at a concert. An interior reminiscent of feudal Japan that makes you say, "am I about to see a movie or fight 6 ninjas"? Fresh popcorn with REAL melted butter. A candy selection that Willy Wonka would blush at. Custom t-shirts that scream, YES I SAW A MOVIE AT THE REDFORD THEATRE. Last but certainly not least the wonderful volunteers who staff the entire venue from top to bottom.

Google
My first time going to the Redford Theatre. I loved the concession stand and the old-fashioned organ which was played by a gentleman before the movie and at intermission time!

Google
Our friends from high school (kids out of the house now, so they're freeeee!) looking for "old people adventures" invited us along to this totally volunteer theater in Redford. What a delightful day it was! We saw a 1947 movie I'd actually never seen before . . Miracle on 34th Street, and it was really pleasant. Seats are very comfortable and there's actual foot room! A lovely woman competently played the huge old theater organ before the show and the local fellas with model trains in their basements had set up an incredible diorama of display.

Google
Amazing place to see a movie! Especially during the holidays! πŸŽ„ Make sure you check out the concession stand, great assortment and excellent prices. 🍫🍿🍬

Google
It was our first Candlelight concert and we loved it! I would highly recommend these concerts. #candlelightconcerts

Yelp
Maybe be a Christmas tradition now! This is an awesome treat! Excited to see what the mystery movie is!

Yelp
Iconic historical theater. It's gorgeous!Completely run by volunteers--amazing people! Showing movies from all decades. I went and saw The Sandlot, fun movie from my childhood. The concessions are so affordable!! You can't beat the prices! Cash is definitely preferred. Please tip! All money goes towards maintaining the theater. They have an organist who plays before and after the movie, as well as intermission. The bathrooms are very clean and there is fun merchandise for sale in the lobby. It's such a great experience!
google avatar

Veronica D.

Yelp
Hidden gem and MUST see!! It is amazing that this is ran by volunteers. I went and saw the grand budapest hotel and then went back for the Empire Strikes Back. I loved it so much that I actually want to go back and bring friends for Candy Man for my birthday in October! Thank you to all who volunteer and keep this beautiful theatre open!
google avatar

Tiffany Z.

Yelp
Keep supporting history! Untouched theater showing classics throughout the year. Christmas is extra special with their decor, huge train setup, organ player at intermission and old timey Christmas movies. And Santa is there too!
google avatar

Lisa K.

Yelp
A true gem. Loved the organ, the crowd, volunteers, movie and popcorn! Cheap prices but make sure to tip because the money goes toward restoration.

Yelp
What is not to (mostly) love about the Redford Theatre, especially when it comes to their annual Three Stooges Fest. A sea of middle-aged, boomer, white guys come to this event. I think I was the only Asian girl in the place (and generally everywhere, for that matter, in the midwest), though the theatre has a lot of Asian themes in the architecture. So, I guess I was not TOO out to place. Everyone is warmly welcomed. Anyway, they show a lot of old movies and host live events such as concerts, plays, musicals, etc. Get tickets online to guarantee general seating. Ambiance: They celebrate their centennial birthday in 2027. Lots of beautiful, thoughtful, detailed craftspersonship. Renovations done and ongoing to keep it alive and kicking. You are transported back in time as you walk in, like Cliff Bells in Detroit. Service: All volunteers. This is a non-profit establishment. The staff BELIEVES in magic and making your experience worthwhile. One of the best highlights of this place is the LIVE organ player that entertains and hypes the audience before the show begins. WATCH the player appear from under the stage! It's quite a sight to see and sound to behold. They usually hold a 50-50 raffle. I won a shirt and not money, but the first couple winners won $100! The snack counter has REAL butter for popcorn. This. Is. Worth. Going. And, they have, literally, every kind of candy too. Prices are quite reasonable. Parking: Street, and fenced lot next to the theatre. It gets full quickly, so arrive early. Doors open at least an hour before every show. In all, lovely establishment for an outing to check out. I think what makes this place cool is the people that come to support it -- they are excited to be there. I went to the Sound of Music Singalong, Napolean Dynamite and Princess Bride shows -- and EVERYONE is saying all the lines! See me laughing at the next Stooge Fest! NYUK NYUK NYUK
google avatar

Ranyia T.

Yelp
We to see the Sound of Music Singalong. First let me start by saying it is an older theatre it was great. I love it, the tickets were $8 but then you go to get concessions they have all the old candy popcorn big bag was $4, candy was $1.50. It was fast and efficient works who by the way are ALL Volunteers! They have an original old organ with someone playing it before the movie and during intermission, Along with a train village on display that they light up and working before, after the movie and during intermission. The also of people dressed up before the show like someone from the movie itself taking to the audience and during intermission they have a raffle.

Yelp
The Redford Theater is an awesome place to see a movie (and get some great popcorn with REAL BUTTER!). They have lots of great classic movies, and events. I went on this occasion to see the 40th anniversary of The Wrath of Khan and the one and only William Shatner. The place was packed, but the volunteers did as well as could be expected. Bill's Q&A was so entertaining, and his stories were like a roller coaster - you knew where it started, more or less where it was going to end, but the middle and how you got to the end was anyone's guess (including his). The decor is Asian inspired, and they keep things pretty clean. The concessions and gift shop are must stops, but bring cash for that yummy popcorn! This is definitely worth a stop, check their schedule online.

Yelp
My niece is a HUGE Davie Bowie fan. So when it was brought to my attention that A Labyrinth celebration was going on at the Redford Theater, we knew we had to take her! She was so excited! The Goblin King Players were dressed to impress and walking around meeting guests. The audience didn't disappoint with their costumes for the event either. There was a little bit of everything! They held a 50/50 raffle and a costume contest. This was not a shadow cast event but there was a live band there playing all the music. They pulled out all the stops for this event! It was super fun! I'm planning on coming back to see the Hocus Pocus Shadow cast showing. It's one of my favorite movies. I can't wait. My niece must have enjoyed herself because she kept my sister up until 1 am to tell her about it. I am gonna miss this girl when she goes back to college.
google avatar

Carolyn E.

Yelp
You really should try and come for the holiday season - they have the most beautiful elaborate trains set up. It's such a nice, affordable family night - tickets are $5 and concessions are very inexpensive. This is a volunteer-run theater, so all concession money goes back to the theater. A beautiful gem in the city.
google avatar

Yelp
The Redford Theatre is a cultural gym. There are so many different performances and shows that are held here on the regular. Please feel free to check their site so that you won't miss out on any of the movies that you love. I've come for everything from the celebration of Prince's life to Clue with a shadow cast. I've loved them all I have to say. The Redford theater is right across from Sweet Potato Sensations, too. So don't short yourself with the stay in the community. Make sure that you get all that you can in this area while you're there.
google avatar

Chris-Julie S.

Yelp
A beautiful a piece of Detroit history, a gem along with the people who have maintained it. We attended the Christmas show Organist John Lauter and Big City Swing Band. The program was fun, light and diverse. We've already planned to come back to see Casablanca in a few weeks. Bravo!
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
I had heard good things about the Redford and even though I realized that movie lovers worship here I still hadn't been. But they and a friend got me here with the 5th annual Noir weekend. 3 days of noir double features. Some shown in 16MM and introduced first with obscure facts or watch for or notice this or that info. It's completely volunteer run and they do it well. Eats are varied and reasonably priced. Oh and it's across the street from Sweet Potato Sensations Parking is attached and there's lots of it and an overflow lot too. They have lots of different movie themes. They don't do first runs or current movies but that's the point. And the organ. It's something to see and don't let the organist get in a boogie woogie or blues mood. I didn't even think it was possible. I enjoyed myself and you should take a look and see if they have a theme that interests you and take some friends to do something different. But talk once the movie starts or check your cell phone and your neighbors may politely check you. But i came to do something different so didn't take offense

Yelp
I was able to see a movie premiere here, where the theater allowed the hosts (movie producers) to provide drinks, cake, and a photographer for the guests for the night. The theater itself is beautiful and exudes a Japanese theme complete with artwork, stage, and ceiling made to imitate a night's sky. The theater popcorn leaves more to be desired (highly artificial and greasy with fake butter), but the prices are cheap, so you ultimately get what you pay for. Candy and soda are also available, as well as sugar-free candy, which I was surprised to find they offered. The theater has balcony seating as well, and for this winter season, they showcased Christmas decorations everywhere, including a Christmas tree and Wintery train models running through a small replica of the area. Overall, it was a well-kept building with interesting events and provided an exciting night to go out and enjoy yourself in a non-conventional theater.

Yelp
I just I love this place! Honestly, I don't think I would change anything about it. The staff is always so courteous and made up of volunteers, so it makes me actually feel good about going and supporting this establishment. They show some of the best classics and it's just a cool and cheap spot to go hang out with friends for a couple of hours. I really wish however, that there would be more dining establishments nearby. That could really be a new hotspot in metro Detroit!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a must visit to any bucket list and classic movie lover. Freshly popped popcorn with real butter makes the experience alone worth it. The inside of building is beautiful (checkout photos posted) Have seen "Singing in the Rain" and a "Three Stooges" Marathon here. Never knew back in the old days movies had intermissions halfway thru movie. Well here at intermission a organ pops up out of the floor and someone plays on it. Something you have to see to enjoy so highly recommend to all

Yelp
Another place I haven't left a review for that I love! The Redford is the coolest, cheapest, and most beautiful place to catch a movie. This is a great theatre for a date, going out with friends, or taking the whole family out. Their schedule is available online and they always have a variety to choose from. $5 movie tickets (cash or card). Ample secured parking. Super affordable concessions (cash only). 50/50 raffle. Unique, custom print shirts.

Yelp
This theater is GORGEOUS. Honestly, one of the most impressive theaters I've been to in my life (and I'm a movie buff so I've been to many). The theater itself has got an Asian theme to it in it's architecture. Beautiful gold hues and red velvet curtains. Just the way a classic movie theater should look! Upstairs the balcony seats many and has comfortable seating with a fantastic sight line (from now on I will always see a movie here from the balcony). The ceiling is gorgeous...a deep blue sky with sparkling "stars." I could stare at the ceiling all night and be happy. The space is actually pretty huge. I think it seats around 1,500 people which is pretty massive. I was last here for their screening of "To Kill a Mockingbird." It was a special occasion as they had brought in Mary Badham who played Scout in the film (and was Oscar nominated for the role!). They had done a lot of fantastic promo so the Saturday night showing boasted a crowd of 1,100! The largest audience they've had since the 1980s. So great for them! The entire staff is volunteer run which is really impressive. Everyone who works here does it because they love the theater and film. They're just so passionate about what they do and what they bring in. Like the Mockingbird event. They don't do celebrity guests often but when they do, they go all out. It was a fabulous experience. Also--CHEAP. Movie tickets are $4 typically. Popcorn, soda and candy is a steal compared to chain movie theaters. And the popcorn is really good, with real, honest to God, butter to serve on top. It's almost embarrassing for other movie theaters when you think about how much the jack up the prices and still don't serve as good of a product and experience as the Redford Theater. Of course they only show classics (every other weekend of the month on Fridays and Saturdays) so you won't catch any new films here but that's part of the appeal and beauty of this theater. If you're a classic movie buff or just looking for a unique night out in Detroit then get out here for an affordable and special night out!

Yelp
I am so happy to be going to the Redford Theatre again. The first movie I ever saw was in this theatre. And my mom used to give my brother, sister and I money to walk to the theatre when were we a little older and we would watch the double feature, all the cartoons and then walk home again. I'm sure it was a cheap way to get 3 out of 4 kids out of the house on a Saturday! Coming back as an adult is a small piece of deja vu that hits as soon as you walk in the building. Thanks for a little slice of my childhood. I'll be back soon for another movie. (And for those that say it's old movies - think of it this way, if you haven't seen the movie before, it's not old. It's new to you.
google avatar

Deb M.

Yelp
What a beautiful building! I love the feel of this place, and can imagine what it must have been like during the days when theaters were new to society and were considered an 'event'. I was there for a movie premier, complete with red carpet and all. The evening was semi-formal and it was nice to get dressed up and go to the theater. I imagine it was reminiscent of times past, and I was thrilled to be there. Sadly, because it was a premier for a local movie, the evening didn't follow the normal format and there was no organ music. Also, the sound quality was really bad, but I will not blame the theater for that as I do not know the reason it was bad. It was just off, kind of muffled. I will definitely keep my eye on what is playing, especially around the holidays. I would love to go back and think this theater would be an awesome date night outing!

Yelp
If you live in metro Detroit and you haven't been to the Redford theater, do yourself a favor and check out their website right now. The Redford theater is an old theater that is keeping up with the times. They bring in old films or classic films and play them on par with the seasons. In the mood for something scary or traditional around Halloween or Christmas? Their schedule will have classics like Young Frankenstein, Evil Dead, Miracle on 34th Street, or A Christmas Story with some of the actor's. Love The Three Stooges, or remember when your parents or grandparents used to watch them? They have that too. Charlie Chaplin? Check. Singing in the Rain? Check. Movies you always wanted to check out on the big screen but never got a chance? Yeah they'll have that too. They also have an organ player that sets the whole mood and reminds you of the theaters rich history. They will sell merchandise for the movies that you won't be able to find anywhere else. Think old school movie posters printed on a t-shirt of your size and color choice. That is so cool. The Redford is also operated by volunteers. Everybody that you see is donating their time because they want you to experience what they love in the theater. That's just good people and good business. The concessions are super inexpensive, because they don't have to pay royalties to Hollywood to rent their reels. That is also cool. A one or two dollar bag of popcorn will certainly sit well with me. Check out the schedule go and see a movie for five bucks and then remember to tell your friends and go back as often as you can.

Yelp
I have had the pleasure of seeing a couple of movies here. It's pretty amazing to see the pipe organ before the movie starts. And it is super cheap. It is worth checking it out.

Laurel N.

Yelp
Saw JAWS here. Well kept place. Staff is very friendly. Let me repeat that....staff is very friendly. I will visit again and will mention it to friends with hope they visit as well. We sat in the balcony for the first half then after intermission we sat on the main floor. Both gave a very good view of the screen. Restrooms were clean.

Yelp
I went to the Redford Theatre for the Noir City Detroit film festival and couldn't believe the value for the $25 VIP Pass. What a steal. Three days of films noir double features, Q&A meet and greet with the Czar of Noir Eddie Muller, a collector's edition comic book 'Batman in Noir Alley' PLUS a jazz singer for the opening act. I will MOST definitely be attending the 3rd Annual Noir City Detroit film festival next year.
google avatar

Ken J.

Yelp
The historic Redford Theater is a gem. An absolute classic to be honest with you. The detail, the colors, the work that is put into keeping this facility as top notch as it is... is amazing. And yet, a ticket to a movie costs.... $4. How in the world could that be? Its because all of the concessions fund everything, and through donations from wonderful patrons... they make sure everything is as good as it could be. Popcorn is popped fresh right then and there, they use real butter, and concession prices are DIRT cheap!!! Make sure to get into the 50/50 raffle too! The one thing that really makes me happy, is that the beginning of the movie... a giant United State Flag is shown.. Everyone... repeat... EVERYONE... stands up and says the pledge of allegiance. Call me proud of our country, call me whatever. It just makes me happy. I'm just hoping that one day they bring back Braveheart so I can see it on the big screen. :)

Yelp
This is the coolest theater ever! It kind of feels like you've gone back in time when you go. I love that they show old movies, and I think they've got a pretty good selection. They take suggestions for movies as well. I love the organ during intermission - you don't get that at any other theater! I also really appreciate that they keep their prices reasonable - it makes for a really affordable date. The theater itself is absolutely beautiful and there's always ample parking in their lots

Yelp
Very unique classic film theater in the former downtown Redford that was annexed by Detroit in the twenties. I first came to the Redford with my good buddy back in 1994. We used to go frequently. Back then, it was a fledgling theater trying to bring people in. In serious disrepair, there was no one in the balcony in those days. Most of the attendees were old people at the time. As I recall, we saw High Noon. The theater is owned by the Motor City Theater Organ Society with overtures preshow and during intermissions. Movie tickets are around 4 bucks depending on the show. They play Fridays and Saturdays about every other weekend with some matinees. The staff is all volunteer. Candy and pop were 1 dollar for years but that has changed slightly. Still, one of the best values ever and one of a kind to the classic film lover. Even if you've seen the film, go for the experience. The Redford was built in the late twenties as an Exotic Revival style with with many deco and midcentury accents that have been added over the years during several mini remodels. The lobby has been completely rehabbed and the balcony seats were replaced with period repro seating. The interior features a Japanese-Asian Dynasty theme in Red and Gold accents. The ceiling is painted in sky blue with faint white clouds, little white stars "twinkle" throughout the show. In December of 2000, Carolyn Grimes who played Zuzu in Its a Wonderful Life made an appearance and spoke of her time working on the film as a child actress (she would've been 6 or 7 at the time). During her part when she was in bed sick, the audience cheered loudly! That was very memorable. When Charade played and Cary Grant's character Brian Crookshank admits to Audrey Hepburn that his mother lives in Detroit, the audience exploded in applause. When artist Prince passed away, the theater did a special impromptu feature of Purple Rain. The theater was packed for several shows that weekend. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance online via an app. Great place to take a date and if she's not into it, find another date. (It's worth noting that Scotty Simpsons Fish n Chips is only about a mile away-another great classic spot that's been around for 70 years.)

Yelp
This is my second time attending Redfordd Theatre... OMG I love the structure of this building. It's a little chilly in there, so make sure to have a light jacket or maybe even bring a small blanket. I don't care if they are showing new or old movies but you can bet $4 a show. I would highly suggest if you are bring a lot of kids, then to maybe bring in your on snacks but if you are solo, then you can buy from the stand. All funds goes back to the building to keep up maintance. Please note -- CASH ONLY!!! (I would have given 5 stars if they accepted plastic) I was lucky enough where someone purchase my popcorn/drink because I only had plastic... I prefect stranger which I give a BIG huge too! (it's surprised her a little but it's the little things that count) So enjoy the show and support REDFORD!!!!
google avatar

David O.

Yelp
Full disclosure demands that I mention that my parents volunteer here, so as to avoid too much abuse I grant it 5 stars. Without a doubt though, the price of concessions is the best you are going to find in a movie theater. I need to ask if they just sell them at cost, because this might be one case where its cheaper to buy them here than to just sneak in your own. The sound system (as of this review) may not be completely up to par, but they have to pay for that stuff out of the theater budget, instead of having a big corporate office pay for it. Fortunately most of the older movies they play are in Mono, or don't require a lot of Surround Sound. The seats are also a bit vintage, so if you are one of those people whose butt gets sore after a bit of sitting in the theater, you'll probably have that problem here too.. Just fair warning. If you are looking for a great "old theater" experience to see a great older movie this is absolutely the place you want to see it. My parents put a great deal of heart and soul into the volunteer work they do here, and I know they aren't the only ones! Even if you should discount my review because of my bias, I think you'll find enough other Yelp reviews fully in favor of visiting the Redford

Yelp
Been here a lot over the lady few years. I live they show movies I missed in theaters. Most were new when I was a kid or before I was born but a good movie is a good movie . We just saw Indiana Jones and Raiders of the lost ark. Wow..just wow. One of my all time favorites in the big screen!! We came last year and saw Evil Dead around Halloween. That was a super cool experience too. I always feel safe and popcorn/drinks are MUCH cheaper than any other place. So glad I found this place!!

Yelp
Love it here! Beautifully restored old theatre. Great schedule of classic films. Ridiculously cheap concession stand. Pipe organ performances before the show and during intermission. Run by volunteers. All proceeds go toward further restoration of the theatre. Amazing! This is one of the great attractions in the Metro Detroit area.

Yelp
This beautiful theatre was built in 1828, during silent film era!!! So cool! It has a full stage with fly space for doing actual theater as well. The Japanese artwork that was painted over during WWII and the beautifully decorated gold organ have been fully restored by volunteers, and the seats have been newly covered with a pretty turquoise velvet! It's just $5 to see a film on the enormous 20 foot x 40 foot screen! The place was almost full (and there are 1661 seats, including the beautiful balcony seats!) for the last showing of Casablanca this year (it's the theater's 90 year anniversary and Casablanca's 75 year anniversary!!!). The crowd thoroughly enjoyed the film, laughing in unison at the classically comic lines while the blue ceiling twinkled like the night sky. But, as awesome as the film, Casablanca, is, the best part was intermission! The beautifully restored organ rose up out of the ground and a gentleman played expertly and very enthusiastically for about 10 or 15 minutes, while the attendees were invited to come up and enjoy a lighted miniature Christmas town at the foot of the stage. There were trains whizzing through the town as the music filled the theater... It was magical! The Redford theater is a must see for anyone able to do so! They have a great lineup of movies and they will be having a live theatrical production of the musical, Shrek, the last weekend of April and first weekend of May, 2018. I would never have known about this theater if I had not been cast as princess Fiona! So excited to perform in such a historic and beautiful theater!!!

Yelp
AMAZING community treasure nestled into a small neighborhood on the western edge of Detroit. I've been here four times as of this writing and have found each visit to be unique and always classy. Impressive that the complex is run by volunteers, who obviously take considerable care in maintaining the facility and keeping features interesting to the surrounding community. Two of my visits have been for VIP events, which appear to be at least a twice yearly affair at the Redford. Both times, the cinema staff has put together a tasteful tribute, allowing fans to have autographs and a quick meet and greet with the visiting artist, and then they will introduce their film or film(s), with accompanying anecdotes, to the crowd. The cinema always includes an intermission with the feature. Interior has been painstakingly and beautifully renovated to maintain the original architecture and designs. Also features an organist performance that is not to be missed!

L K.

Yelp
Love and support the Redford. Attended the showing of Planes Tranes and Automobiles on 11/7/20. WARNING NO POPCORN sold in concession area! Candy, Pop available but some genius decided not to include popcorn. Concession volunteers had masks, gloves and separate person handling money. Redford Theatre always had the best popcorn and we really look forward to it when attending a film here. Just FYI, the Farmington Civic, which is a classic old movie house sells popcorn w their movies. If I had known this in advance, I wouldn't bought tickets . Theatre should disclose the NO POPCORN because popcorn just goes with watching a movie, it's classic.

Yelp
I've only been here once but I absolutely loved our experience. We took in a showing of Purple Rain on 33mm very soon after Prince passed away. The theater itself was great, all the staff we encountered was cool and the overall feeling of celebration of Prince was awesome to be in. I'd go back there for other films for sure.

Yelp
This is such a gem. I've been coming here for years and I have zero complaints. The volunteers at the theater are so proud of and obviously love and cherish The Redford. It's a huge theater, they show wonderful films, and the popcorn is served with real butter and is only $5!!!!!! I would go to this theater over any other!

Yelp
This really is a little gem. Definately a December "must do" for families. They show movies like White Christmas, A Christmas Carol and A Christmas Story (you'll shoot your eye out). First rate, friendly service. Great concession with just about every candy under the sun. Please add money to the tip jar - - - goes toward restoration. Love to look at the "star filled sky" during the intermission. I LOVE this place! Also wheelchair accessible.

Yelp
I've only been here a couple times but each time I've seen a movie here, it's a throwback to a simpler time. This is how movie houses used to be. Thankfully the Redford is still around! My favorite part of the whole place is the organ. 30 minutes before the movie you get a great concert on the organ and then again at the intermission. The ceiling gives you the feeling that you are watching outside. Even cooler about this place is that it is all volunteer run. I love that each performance starts with the National Anthem on the organ. Great place, great experience, great environment. Give it a visit!

Yelp
What a great place to see a movie. They also have many events that not many places partake in. I was there with my daughter for the George Romero Festivities. We both had a blast and the place was clean and everyone who worked there was really nice and accommodating. We've been back once since but can't wait to go back again to this historic and beautiful place.

Yelp
Love this place! Went last evening for"White Christmas". What a great way to get into the spirit, always a fun outing with friends and family. Few affordable nights out anymore, only 6 bucks! Great value for and entertaining, nostalgic tradition.

Yelp
One of my favorite theaters in the metro detroit area! Love coming here to see anything from 1920s era silent movies to modern movies and everything in between. Such a good vibe with a really cool interior. Tickets are cheap and it's such an amazing place to visit. The organ is also a really nice touch as it plays before every movie. Concessions are also not horribly over priced and they have a really nice staff! I look forward to visiting again!

Yelp
Located in Redford, this beautiful theater is known for showing classic movies throughout the year. We attended a Shadow Casting of the Halloween favorite Hocus Pocus. Being my first visit to the Redford, I did not know what to expect. However, I was happily surprised by the theater itself and it's beautiful architecture inside. The showing we attended was sold out, so parking was quite packed and diverted to various areas surrounding the theater. And the theater itself was very packed with attendants. Despite this, the showing was still very organized and made for a great night. The theater hosts a concession stand, complete with popcorn, drinks, and snacks for your movie needs. However, concessions were cash only when we were in attendance, so prepare for that. Seating was similar to other theater seating and holds quite a mass of patrons. If you're sitting closer to the stage/screen you also get to witness the beautiful oriental themed design that surrounds the stage. Check this place out to make a normal night out to the movies something truly special!

Yelp
Awesome theater to go to for a movie or a play! In fact it is one of my favorite theaters in Michigan. I love the blue starry sky. I love the organ player. I love the cool cool events they have there! I have been there for Mary Poppins and to kill a mockingbird when scout spoke to the audience. Also, recently saw the music on Matilda. You should find an opportunity to go to this theater because it is a really special place.

Yelp
Last Saturday, with the NCAA final four underway in the big D, I thought at the last minute it would be a good time to check out the Redford Theater's bi-annual 3 Stooges Festival (Thanks again for the heads up, Yelp!). I called ahead to try to get some parking info but, the prerecorded message mentioned nothing of it. It did say to come early for this event. That was a luxury I didn't have, unfortunately, being a last minute decision. Getting there was also hampered by the inane directions provided by Google which not only sent me a mile further north than necessary but also sent me through a stop and go construction zone on 7 mile. To Google's credit, it did provide me with a satellite view that revealed the apparent parking lots. We wound up parking in a lot behind the theater and walked about a block to it. The area is like much of Detroit and on the sketchy side, so practice safe pedestrianizing. The place was filled to capacity with Stoogeafiles. The popularity of an inexpensive night out at a historic theater shouldn't have surprised me. When you enter the lobby, after you get your ticket torn, you are greeted with a sprawling line that is for the cheap yet varied concessions. The lobby is made even more busy by the selling of 50/50 raffle tickets and souvenirs. We entered the theater to the recognizable strains of popular tunes on the theater's organ. The crowd 's attitude helped to set the stage (sorry--bad pun) with their clapping (and a few dancing) along to the music. Before the show started, general announcements were made and game scores were also provided. With the news that the Spartans were winning, people were as cheerful as could be expected. The shorts were thoroughly enjoyable. The crowd sounded as if they were seeing the Stooges for the first time. A woman across the aisle from us, God bless her, had a whooping laugh reminiscent of Goofy falling down a mine shaft. This definitely added to the overall fun-factor for the evening. The theater even showed an additional short because one short advertised didn't get to the them from the distributor. All in all, if you want a big bang for your entertainment dollar, look no further than the Redford Theater. You'll have a great time while supporting a non-profit gem. P.S.: I look dashing in my 3 Stooges t-shirt!

Yelp
Picture this: A rainy evening in Detroit. It is 1948. The cars on passing the corner of Lahser and Grand River are an assortment of Packards, Studebakers, Nashs and Hudsons. On the marquee is a title "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" with Humphrey Bogart. You park the car or get out of the taxi in front of the movie palace. You join the line and pay your quarter to see the flick. walking into the theatre, you are enveloped in red velvet/ Walking to the concession area, you get a box of popcorn and it is liberally topped with butter.... Then you walk into the theatre itself, An organ is playing the songs of the day, so you settle into your seat, a richly appointed affair that caresses your tired body. A smile comes to your face as the movie begins and they lower the organ back to the floor level. All except for the old cars and the prices, this is what I experienced last night at the Redford. The movie was stellar as was the organ music, and I had an absolute wonderful time. It is too bad that these kind of movies are not shown in this kind of venue any more. But, there are a lot of people like me who appreciate old movies. They have these events on the awerage of twice a month. Parking is secure, and free. Once you go, you will be back.

Yelp
I really can't say enough about the Redford Theatre. Their selection of classic movies has drawn me there on a number of occasions, and I'm never disappointed. The latest venture was to see Gone with the Wind. Undoubtely one of the longest movies ever created. Since LivingSocial had a special going on, the theatre was absolutely packed. However, every seat has a decent view. Plus it's kind of fun to see a movie from a balcony. Although there were some idiots sititng behind us, we made it through the movie with flying colors! They even had an intermission which made me think I was seeing a Broadway show. This place is a true step back in time when going to the movies was an event. It has an Asian theme to it which I suspect has something to do with the old Grauman's Chinese theatre in Hollywood. Although the theatre is old, it has been maintained extremely well over the years. The organ that plays is perfect 'old time' entrance music and gets you in the mood for a classic film. Not to mention concessions are cheap! They are a non-profit theatre so please go there to see a film and keep the place running!

Yelp
We flowed up to the balcony, hand in hand, to a serenade of old Christmas classics played by an enthusiastic organist delighted to charm children and adults alike. The patrons waiting in the audience lent their voices to "Holly Jolly Christmas" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," and parents led their children and a few bashful teenagers up to admire the holiday railroad shuttling miniature trains through a snowy village. Five minutes later, the red velvet curtains peeled back to display the Stars and Stripes. A few bemused glances aside, the crowd stood in a rolling wave from the back out. Red-and-white hats were doffed. Hands went to breasts. The organist struck the first chord, and well over two hundred voices -- a packed house, as many as that would be -- joined together in a honeyed immersion of "Oh, say can you see..." Volunteer docents crept between the aisles afterwards to be sure everyone was settled and content, then the lights dimmed down. The glorious Christmas tree saturated in lights went dark, and even the Christmas wreaths on the restored Japanese buildings flanking either wing turned into starry pinpricks like the luminous sparks overhead on the cloudy projected sky. For the first time in my life, I got to see "It's a Wonderful Life," a staple of every holiday season since before I could talk, on the big screen. Jimmy Steward smiled, glided, and stamped his way across the silver screen. Bedford Falls danced with snow. Jokes lost on me as a child and a teenager suddenly sprang to life with rich detail. We all laughed at the antics the way television never quite captures, sharing a special moment with the whole group. A pair of teenagers below me sighed at the romantic gestures, their parents grinning and transported back to younger years. We were all back in 1946, alight with wonder. Not a peep interrupted the movie. No cell phones, no crying babies, no rude people muttering to one another. Intermission hit and all the life and activity resumed. Now I know why these movies and shows were scripted to accommodate a break. A more civilized, genteel era comes alive again in the Redford Theatre, and all for $4. My god. Once it has its spell on you, you'll never be satisfied by a rental off Netflix and bad microwave popcorn. Come down, be enchanted by the experience. You'll be glad you did. Extra special hats off to the volunteers who PROPOSED on stage while we were there, under the pretense of a yearly award to honour the fiancee. As soon as the award was announced, I turned to the beau and said, "It's a proposal. Watch." I was not disappointed. It was the icing on the cake, and I was definitely not the only weepy soul there. The standing ovation and roar of approval suggested the audience agreed. Oh, Redford. You are the polished, golden soul of Detroit and I am in love.

Yelp
What a gem! This old theatre that has been in continuous operation since 1928 plays old movies for around $4 a ticket. They also occasionally have special guests who starred in the movies to make appearances and meet and greets before the show. They have ample fenced in and secure parking and the aisles have a lot of leg room. The theatre is a not-for-profit so the concession stand is very reasonably priced and they offer custom made shirts for each performance and they do a raffle at intermission. While there are not many restaurants in the area, if you are going to a performance, I would recommend eating elsewhere, but definitely check out this beautiful theatre!
