Great service, good food and nice choice of beers. We ordered the pork burger, beef pasta and onion rings. And two beers. The onion rings were average, and the pork burger was good. I’m a pasta fan so I particularly enjoyed the pasta. Well-cooked, rich sauce and generous portions of tender beef. Highly recommended!

Wonderful place for stopover on the way to Tauranga! Excellent service, food and drinks. Menu was great! Can highly recommend the banoffee pie😊😊

We stopped here for a drink and afternoon tea. The staff were friendly and welcoming as well very efficient. We ordered a couple of sides and the portions were very generous. Interesting memorabilia on the wall celebrating Matamata's sports history.

Had lunch there, they were obviously busy with a couple of Christmas parties. Prompt with menu and entrees but we had to wait longer for our mains to come out. The food was nice.

Really delicious meals and entrée. 2 adults & 1 child. We got the specials board of deserts the cookie monster & chocolate brownie which sold out really quickly. Have been to both matamata & morrinsville bars and will definitely be back again. Was pretty busy when we came in on Friday night and all our meals & drinks were perfect. Keep up the good work team.

Excellent food with fast and friendly service! We stopped here for lunch before our Hobbiton tour and were were glad we did! Waiter recommended the Pork Belly Boa Buns and they were excellent, highly recommend them! Fun little pub near Hobbiton! Highly recommend stopping by if your in the area!

Just wanting to have some light food when passing by this town, we found this bar that has nice atmosphere and decided to get the pork sliders and a glass of lemon tea. Staff was friendly and the service was amazing! Despite only ordering one dish to share, they helped us to divide the food without any instructions, though I was confused at first. The taste was fabulous and the lemon tea was tasty. Would recommend anyone to enjoy their night here 😃

We came here after our tour at Hobbinton, which capped off the perfect LOTR themed morning. The ambiance included Lord of the Rings memorabilia and the pizzas on the menu were named in honor of the trilogy. The service was great and our waiter asked for our names so she could address us personally. Food came out quick and hot. Portions are big enough to share so everyone can try each dish.

We arrived in Matamata to meet the bus for our tour of Hobbiton, but we had about an hour to kill before the meeting time (and it was raining!) . Luckily, The Redboubt was open and was a nice warm place to kill an hour, have amazing snacks, and a few drinks. The Redoubt is located right at the I-SITE where you meet the bus, so you definitely can't miss it. It's decorated in all Lord of the Rings decor, down to the Hobbit hole style doorways/windows, getting you totally ready to get immersed in the journey you're about to take. We ordered a few beers to start and they arrived cold and crisp - definitely refreshing for a fun day in Hobbiton! Food-wise, we ordered the 3 Slider Selection, and picked the chicken, cranberry, burry, and brie sliders. They were super tasty and actually pretty large for "sliders" - and it even came with a small side of fries. We also shared the Redoubt's Famous Seafood Chowder, and it was super warming and hearty, but not too filling as it's seafood and not a heavier meaty base. With the delish food, awesome ambiance, and plentiful drinks - I definitely recommend stopping here if you're in Matamata for a Lord of the Rings tour, or for any other reason!

The pizzas and the service weren't all that great. There are better places to eat at.

This place was definitely a hidden (well not soooo hidden) gem! Located almost directly across from the Matamata I-site center, you really can't miss it. I have to admit, I didn't have time to find a place to eat in matamata while we waited for our bus to Hobbiton so it was just by chance we decided to give this place a try. Very cute seating area outside and we were going to sit out there but Leo (aweeeesome server!!!) told us there might be a lot of flies out there. So we opted to sit inside instead, thank you Leo! If there's one thing I hate, it's swatting away at flies while trying to eat a meal! We decided to order a few things and just share. My son ordered the kids pizza and my husband and I ordered the Buddha bowl and the Eowyns blessing pizza. The Buddha bowl was sooooooooooooo good. You have to get this if you're looking for a healthier option. It was beautiful and colorful and tasty. And let me tell you, the coconut rice is to diiiiiiieeee for. Best coconut rice I've had. Service was wonderful and our food came out pretty quick. We were ready to enjoy hobbiton on a happy stomach! If you're waiting for the hobbiton bus, make sure to stop in here to get a bite to eat before you go!

Very close to the tourist center (which looks like a hobbit house) and seems like a solid option for a sit down meal and drink here in Matamata. I tried a cider (good, a little sweet but still pretty light) and got the Buddha bowl. My boyfriend got the curry. I liked the Buddha bowl! Tasty broccolini and maple roasted kumara, half an avocado, beets, chicken, and rice. Was pretty refreshing! And they played happy birthday for 2 patrons while we were there on a Saturday. So obviously pretty festive.

We loved this place, the food was so incredible. We had a steak that was huge and cooked perfectly as well as a crispy pork dish. The stone bread side was perfection, and the fries were thick hand cut fries. I really liked the ambiance and our server was super nice. If I lived near here, I would make this my regular hangout!

The staff here is so friendly. We had Christina for our waitress tonight and she was absolutely amazing. She was very attentive, friendly and just amazing. The food was delicious, the atmosphere is awesome and the service was perfect. We chose this place after our B&B host recommended a handful of places. I had the ravioli which they make 100% from scratch. My husband had the cheeseburger and polenta fries which he said was delicious. My mum had the ribs which she devoured. The beer selection is fun...my hubby did the sampler and enjoyed all of them. If you're in the area, I would recommend this place.

This place was recommended to us by our tour guide at Hobbiton. Went in for a quick bite and a drink. It was a really great place! Good food, great service, and the band was really good! I would definitely recommend the place if you're in the area!

On a vacation in New Zealand with my family for the first time. We had a lot of long drives through the countryside and we happened to walk into this restaurant just for a pit stop to get some lunch. Everything my family had was amazing. Would definitely recommend the chicken soft tacos, and the burrito bowl! Service was amazing as well, quick and friendly!

We visited this pub/bar/eatery once for lunch and once for after-dinner drinks during our stay in Matamata. The lunch atmosphere is clean, cozy and welcoming. In my opinion, any menu that has Lord of the Rings inspired names is already off to a good start. We expected pub food and that's what we got. The fish and chips were average and the pizza I had was pretty good. It was a decent place for lunch - but don't go in expecting anything other than good, hearty pub food. When we returned in the evening, it felt like a local hang, and there was a rugby game on that gave it a more lively atmosphere. The bartender was friendly and chatty and we had a great time.

OH. MY. GAWD. I don't even know where to start. Service was so amazing!! The Mojito...the Mojito! If I didn't have to actualy try and do adult stuff the day we came, I would have stayed for just that. The food was beyond delicious!!! I'm from the States. I'm a foodie on top of that. I grew up with the Southern Cooking mentality. We have an old school saying, "It is Slap Yo Momma" good!!! Slogan on the window says good, but it should say phenomenal!!! The chef is a genius! If we are doing 10/10...this place gets 100/10!!! Will definitely be back!!!

We loved our visit to Matamata... except The Redoubt. Very surprised as the reviews seemed good... but we had two different servers, both acted like they had never had a customer before and the food was TERRIBLE. We ordered mussels (which were the fishy and poorly prepared) and on the server's recommendation the ribs (which were cold and came in some sort of bland gravy rather than BBQ sauce). There are plenty of other delicious restaurants in the cute little town center of Matamata... skip the Redoubt!

Super cute restaurant and bar with food that's far from your average pub fare. Service was friendly, and it was nice sitting outside on the big wooden tables with fresh flowers on each. We tried the Radler fish & chips (chips swapped out for avocado & tomato salsa + coriander? No problem) plus the scallop salad. Both were fresh, delicious and we polished the lot off! Only criticism was that the scallop dish could have had more scallops. Highlight was the homemade tartare with crispy capers.

We had an amazing day traveling through New Zealand today and found an awesome place to stop for a few pictures and then an even better place that had a $15 Steak special that we couldn't pass up. A most definite stop in Matamata if your travels bring you this way. Enjoy!!!

This place is very overpriced, you can tell they just want to take advantage of tourists. The cocktail was so sweet I couldn't drink it. The pizza was really heavy and the cream cheese added on top was an odd addition. We ordered "Saurons fury" and cool as bro cocktail. My husband enjoyed the beer taster at least. We wouldn't return.

Great food beer and service. Cool decor too. My raviolis were good maybe a bit rich with the sauce. Gotta love water out of a gin bottle. I felt like a true alcoholic

The food, service and beer were so good I added a place on yelp. Try the risotto. Sean was an amazing server.

I came down to Morrinsville for a 21st a day early, and the b&b had a menu for the rebound so I thought I'd give it a try, as a person on my own I was seated at the bar(very busy). The manager on duty introduced himself and asked my name and the bar staff chatted with me and asked after my meal a very friendly bunch. I had the bacon covered chicken with beetroot resoito, sounds strange but it was absolutely delicious. I would fully recommend the redoubt bar to anyone stopping in morrinsville.

This place has the best lamb that I have eaten in my time in NZ. I picked it because all the Hobbits are there and was extremely satisfied

Cute little pub with a cheesy lotr theme but when in the area i guess. But imust say the bacon wrspped chicken with cous cous was the most delicious meal i had. Just perfect. The pizza was just ok, not as spicy as the description suggested. Service was good but a little absent at times. Great place for a casual meal.

Great atmosphere and excellent food. The cocktails were spot on - only fly in the ointment was the use of plastic straws - thought everyone had moved on from them.

Love the décor, since it was located in Matamata, there were Hobbit/LoR decorations. We ordered Theodin's last wish, which had olives, basil, and tomatoes. If ordering pizza, request that the pizza is cooked a little longer because the toppings made the crust kind of soggy. It had good flavor, though. Since it is a thin crust, order a large if sharing.

Wow...what a wonderful meal. The food was reasonable and tasked as good as it smelled. Our server was wonderful and had a wealth of knowledge about the area in general. We were with our two kids ages 11 and 13. They enjoyed as much as us.

Ordered ravioli, beet slaw, stone bread, wine and beer - none of it was awful, but also not good. Couldn't even get freshly cracked black pepper. Guess I'm a snob. Would've rather been hungry. No stars for food, but servers were great, and the atmosphere was lively,
