At first glance, Regent might look like just a bakery based on their expansive wall of buns and shining cake display. However, they also whip up a selection of Chinese entrees in the kitchen and offer various teas and coffees. From here, you can grab a meal, dessert, snack and drink... truly a one-stop shop!
Three of us stopped by one Saturday afternoon to pick up an assortment of pastry items along with an order of chow fun for lunch. Lots of carbs, but hey, it was time for a weekend treat! We grabbed a tray at the entrance and began piling on buns (individually wrapped) filled with red bean, custard, and BBQ Pork just to name a few. I'd say the average price among the bun selection was about $2-3 each, which is not bad considering how huge they are. We paid for our bread items and stepped aside to wait for our order of chow fun which was ready within about 10 minutes. During our visit, the employees kindly answered a couple of our questions and interacted with all customers in a friendly manner.
+ Beef Chow Fun, dry ($10.95): At first, we were a little bummed that Regent's version didn't have the charred wok flavor that is a common characteristic of most chow funs. However, it was less oily, less salty and contained meaty pieces of tender beef, so we enjoyed it overall. For the price, the serving seemed a little small, but fed the three of us.
As for the buns, they all seemed to have the same doughy base, which was fairly airy, a tad sweet and had a nice chew to it.
+ BBQ Pork Bun: The serving of pork was not only generous, but the pieces were meaty as well. Much better quality than a char sui bao with minced meat that I've encountered at other places before.
+ Beef Curry Bun: Chopped beef mixed with a yellow curry made for an aromatic and savory pocket. I personally didn't care for this one much, but my mom enjoyed it.
+ Coconut Bun: A buttery cream filling was piped all the way through with a coating of coconut flakes on top. It was like a true dessert!
+ Red Bean Mochi: The interior of the bun was lined with a layer of mochi and housed a glob of red bean which made this bun very heavy. Since the mochi wasn't too noticeable anyway, I'd recommend the regular Red Bean Bun instead.
+ Custard Bun: With a sweet swirl on top and filled with a rich custard center, this one is best paired with a coffee or tea.
We've been to Regent a couple times previously and have always been pleased with our experience. The next time we return, we'll need to try their egg tarts and more from their hot menu!
