The Best Halal Food in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"This family-owned Beaverton Egyptian and Iraqi restaurant serves an expansive menu that covers classics from both countries. Lamb shanks arrive both as the fall-apart tender, braised quzi ala timman, an Iraqi preparation served over rice, as well as fatta, an Egyptian dish with rice, pita crisps, and garlicky, tomato-y sauce. However, it’s hard to skip yet another preparation of lamb shanks, which caramelizes them with pomegranate molasses and a fragrant blend of saffron and cardamom. The Egyptian-style roast chicken, with beautifully browned skin and a biryani-esque rice laden with raisins and nuts, is another winner. Online ordering is available through Clover and the restaurant features indoor and outdoor seating." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
Excellent food and service! Small place, but the Egyptian decor was nice. I lived in Saudi Arabia when I was young and really miss the food, so I'm always on the lookout for a place to get my hummus fix. This place has been one of the best I've have in the States, definitely the best I've had in Oregon. We had a nice chat with the owners about where we all had lived, and how much has changed since I was last out that way. I will definitely be going back frequently!

Iris S. L.

Google
Small, local, family style Mediterranean restaurant. Only about 30 or so seats available. We were seated at a smaller table at first, but they changed us to a bigger booth when it became available ♥️ The food took a bit to come but it was worth the wait. Loved everything on the appetizer platter. My Beef kabob and chicken shawarma plate was flavorful and HUGE!! (Enough to bring home and savor it again ♥️) Definitely will go back to try other things on the menu.

David R.

Google
Some of the best hummus you can find in Oregon. This place is in downtown Beaverton. It has freshly made flat bread. Perfectly cooked kabobs and great shawarma.

Google
I enjoyed the food alot. I ordered the lamb and it was very good, cooked really well and melted perfectly. However it had almonds on them. I'm allergic to almands, at first I thought they were peanuts until asking. It did not say on the menu that that dish had nuts or in the picture. They told me that the manus were not fully up to date because the company that did it messed them up (there are also several spelling mistakes). The owner seemed really nice and friendly and I still had a good night because I had Benadryl on me. But I hope that they can get better menus soon because that is an issue. The food overall was still great despite that.

Google
Food is amazing! Really enjoyed the Beef and Chicken Mix Plate. Owner told me to try something new and it definitely paid off. I think it’d be hard to go wrong here. Get a Vimto drink too lol. Never had it before, but it went perfect with everything.

Google
I knew this place would be wonderful as soon as I walked in. We ordered the lamb shoulder and a few other dishes to go, and the lamb is unbelievably good. Everyone was happy and we have plenty of leftovers. Can't recommend this place enough.

Google
Came here late one night in Portland. Blown away by the service — we were promptly seated, given a full overview of the menu, and ever personal recommendations from the chef himself. He made it very clear that we ought to explore the Egyptian-Iraqi cuisine his family was sharing with Portland, so he insisted we get Moussaka, a lamb plate, and kabob plate. We were served in no less than 15 minutes and were blown away by the freshness and attention to detail. The lamb was fall off the bone tender, the Moussaka paired incredibly well with the fresh bread, and the Iraqi tea reminded me of many fond times in CA. 100% recommend if you’re in Portland.

Emily B.

Google
5 Stars I had the caramelized lamb shank and the best baklava I’ve ever tasted. The owner and his wife were kind and welcoming — they truly made the experience. I’ll be back every time I’m in Portland. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The food was sooo amazing! We got the most delicious Beef Kebab and Shawarma plates! The Iraqi bread was so warm, soft, and a perfect pairing with Baba ghanoush (tangy & fresh eggplant). The beef kebab with the spicy aioli sauce was perfectly seasoned and yummy! Super big portions too, you will leave with a full tummy. Price is super reasonable and affordable. The uncle who was our server had a 100/100 customer service. He was kind and you could tell he really cared for the community. Big applause to the chef! We will definitely come back at least once a month!

Yelp
1-Star Review Absolutely disgusting experience - avoid this place at all costs. The moment we walked in, my shoes made that gross sticky sound on the filthy floor - should've been our cue to turn around and leave. We ordered anyway, only to sit there listening to microwave doors slamming and constant beeping from the kitchen. Who goes out to pay restaurant prices for microwaved reheated meat. I could do that at home. I don't think anything was made fresh today. The half chicken tasted outright off - weird, stale, and borderline unsafe. We took one bite and pushed the plates away. Couldn't even force ourselves to eat it. Total waste of money and an instant regret. Dirty, cheap, and serving reheated food. Never coming back.

Yelp
This place is nasty!! Floor is sticky, everything is sticky! I saw the cook, get the knife and wipe it on their pants and go back to cutting. I have no idea how this place is survived health inspections it is by far the most disgusting restaurant I've ever seen!!!! The smoothie/icy machines have a line on them from where they were like three days ago. I'm not even sure they've ever been not even sure any of this place has ever been cleaned. It's nasty.!!!!

Yelp
Amazing and often overlooked restaurant. The food was hot and fresh and the service was excellent. The building clearly has been a lot of things (Railroad office, salon, etc.) so there's some love needed for the structure, but the food was wonderful.
google avatar

Peri S.

Yelp
The owners are a wonderful couple. They have a great sense of humor. We ordered the chicken shawarma plate with hummus and Iraqi bread, baba ghanouj, and Iraqi tea. The portions are large, the baba ghanouj is flavorful and covered in delicious olive oil, the shawarma is flavorful, and the hummus is some of the best in the Portland greater metro area. The Iraqi tea is served traditional style in a copper ornate kettle and glass inlays in the cups. Sugar cubes are provided. Love this place!

Yelp
The food is delicious! Had the t Egyptian lamb shank(owner recommended for flavor), and was the best lamb I've had since a kid. I really enjoyed the restaurant. The owner is extremely friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is super clean and I love the decir.

Marsha O.

Yelp
All I can say is 'Don't Go' There are so many wonderful Middle Eastern restaurants in Portland and this one is at the very bottom. The food that was served to us was barely reheated, cold and tasteless or stale. When we complained the server ( likely the owner) went back into the kitchen and we could hear a screaming match between him and cook. They were not accommodating or gracious. So very disappointing and clearly no one cared!
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
Just go! You won't be disappointed. The food is wonderful. We wanted to try new things and got the Moraco lamb and vegetarian Koba mix. The lamb was juicy, tender in an apricot sweet sauce. The Koba mix had 5 different dishes, yummy to sample each one. The falafel was flavorful, light, crispy and delicious. Sambossas vegge was so delicious, filled with tasty veggies and a slightly spicy dipping sauce. Falafel was flavorful and tasty, ordered more to take home. Great friendly service and delicious food!

Yelp
Excellent Egyptian and Iraqi food! There were only a handful of tables inside so we were lucky to get the larger table in the restaurant. The husband owner greeted us when we entered and made suggestions on what to order for our table of six since the menu was a bit overwhelming. To start, we got a large Hummus plate with Iraqi bread. The owner brought out the food and let us know to eat the bread while it was warm. The bread was chewy but firm, it went well with the delicious hummus. We also got the Egyptian Mousaka which is stewed vegetables in a vinegar tomato sauce. I love anything vinegar, so I really enjoyed this dish. We also ordered the Mix Kabob Beef and Shawarma Chicken over Hummus, over Iraqi Bread. The kabob was juicy and freshly made, I preferred it over the chicken. There were other chicken dishes that looked better, (like the half chicken or quarter chicken plates) so I would try those next time. Also the Iraqi Lamb Shank was super tender and flavorful, so I highly recommend it. This was such a great meal served by the lovely owner, it was a great meal to kick start the month of Ramadan well!

Yelp
Food was amazing! Staff was also fantastic! Would totally recommend this place. Is a bit expensive.

Melissa P.

Yelp
Delicious food! Babaganoush and Iraqi bread are standout. My friend got lamb kabob and loved it! Owners are very friendly! Check this place out!

Yelp
Great food . Small hole in the wall Restaurent but good food . Price is good as well . Open late

Jerica P.

Yelp
Very delicious! I had the chicken shawarma sai. I would order it again and again! The flavors are amazing. I really enjoy this restaurant.

Yelp
Food was awesome, I got the spicy macaroni and chicken. Portion was huge and food was absolutely delicious. The service was friendly. Can't recommend them enough. Ambiance is cozy, its a small place but there was ample space and seating.

Eli B.

Yelp
The guy at the front was a bit rude. The food that he gave me had a hair in it. Lastly, the I ordered a desert that they completely forgot to include. Would not recommend unfortunately.

Yelp
Came to celebrate my new name change. We meant to go to the Cafe next door but came here instead. The woman was the hostess ,waitress and the cook!! The food was bright and so tasty. Coffee was an awesome treat to end the meal. They were so sweet and the place felt cozy. Wish it was s little cooler

Yelp
Our first time here tonight. Small mom and pop place. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Flavorful and I didn't use the salt shaker once, lol! Highly recommend this place!

Bart M.

Yelp
Amazing! I would be back here every day if they were open that often. The moussaka is a gift from the gods.
google avatar

Yelp
Always wonderful food here. Recently, I had a gorgeous lamb shoulder. The owners are so kind and wonderful, and they make the best recommendations.

Yelp
We popped into Rehana today on a whim while visiting from Colorado. It is, without a doubt, the BEST Mediterranean food I've ever had. The owners, husband and wife team Rasha and Moataz, specialize in authentic Egyptian and Iraqi cuisine that is phenomenal. We really enjoyed the special hot black tea which is so flavourful. The Iraqi flatbread was delicious and soft, and the Hot Mazza plate was pure perfection. Their hummus is literally the best I've ever tasted. In addition to the amazing food, the service was incredible too. Moataz was our server while Rasha prepared our food. They were both so welcoming and kind, and made us feel like we were visiting the home of friends. They clearly put a lot of love into this place and it's very special. 10/10 HIGHLY recommend.

Crystal B.

Yelp
Just visited for the first time and this place was sooo good! We got the chicken shawarma and chicken kabob plate and both were amazing and served quickly. The owners were nice and attentive and even gave us a dessert on the house since it was our first time in. Will definitely be back again!
google avatar

Yelp
A very cozy family restaurant! When I came in, I instantly knew I was in for a good time. The family-owned business had very attentive staff and were extremely patient. They were the best! The food was also very good and delivered promptly. I ordered the Iraqi hot tea, which was totally worth it! There was enough tea for two throughout the two hours we stayed. I ordered the Gyro sandwich, which was very filling! Support your local businesses because there's always gems like these!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food with huge portions. The owners were incredibly nice and even offered us Egyptian dessert to try as it was our first time. We ordered the beef kebab/chicken shawarma on Iraqi bread that was the size of the table! We also ordered the baba ganoush that was wonderfully smokey and texturally delightful. Definitely would recommend if you're in the area, or even if you're not! Worth the drive to try.

Yelp
I found Rehana on Yelp recently, and the whole experience was delightful, and Rehana's food is exceptional! My 10-year-old son and I walked in the door and we were greeted by the owners, quickly followed by 2 deserts, gifted to us, just as a welcome for it being our first time. One a rice pudding, and the other a puff pastry with cream and pistachios called Warbet. The Warbet pastry is phenomenal. I do like my donuts, but I'd take Rehana's Warbet over a donut any day for a treat... airy crunchy outside, and the inside a silky smooth, not overly sweet cream. Being our first time we decided to have a few extra things off the menu, with the bonus of having enough to take home. And we had plenty! We went with the leg of lamb, Baba Ganoush, beef kabab, chicken Shawarma and the pita bread. My son pleasantly surprised me in wanting to order the lamb, and proclaimed the best lamb ever. I have to say I agree. The leg of lamb is fall apart off the bone tender, an absolute gorgeous cut of meat, and a perfect marriage of spices and seasoning. The ground beef in the kabab was mouthwatering delicious, perfect in texture, and the spices vibrant but not overpowering. I usually find Kafta kababs pungent in cumin and too salty... but not this one, Really, Rehana's is much better than any I've had in my lifetime, eating Middle Eastern food here in Portland. The Saffron rice, salad, baba ghanoush, and chicken shawarma are just as good if not better than I've had before. The restaurant itself is welcoming, warm and clean, but no frills. The owners are humble and so welcoming, that in combination with the incredible food, who wants frills? Not me :). My mouth was singing with the delectable flavors for hours after. My family loved the leftovers. I can positively say Rehana is now a place we will be seeking out for special occasions, as well as family nights.

Michael J.

Yelp
Delicious! The tea was wonderful, the Iraqi lamb shank delicious, and the chicken + rice was excellent!
google avatar

Arnab K.

Yelp
It's a fine place with a large serving size for their price. The service is a bit slow and ambiance could be better. But in any case what matters is the food which is good. Try it out.
google avatar

Amber A.

Yelp
The flavors here are amazing! They really know how to use spices and cook meat to perfection. The Egyptian chili is so uniquely tangy and we enjoyed it very much. I believe the restaurant is family owned and we felt that friendly attentiveness during our stay. Thank you for bringing this unique flavor to Beaverton. A+!
google avatar

Yelp
Omg so good. I don't know what they did in that hummus but I'm in heaven. Kind humans, delicious food, will be back.
google avatar

Marjorie O.

Yelp
Food is delish!! This is my first time here and i will definitely be back to try more foods. I ordered the combo plate with salad and all the meats are very well seasoned and tender! The prices are reasonable. The staff are friendly and welcoming. I will be back soon
google avatar

Ishan P.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. I always get the iraqi bread kabob combo. Sooooo juicy and deliciously seasoned. The iraqi bread with hummus and arabic salad go very well together. Highly recommend this restaurant. Would be 5 stars, just a little expensive for me.

Yelp
We enjoyed a delicious dinner here tonight. I'm super happy to have discovered this place. We had the chicken kofta and sweet and sour lamb shank with caramelized onions as well as the Egyptian Mousaka eggplant that was absolutely scrumptious. It had the perfect balance of spicy and tangy and the owner told us it can basically pair well with anything and he was not wrong. My chicken kofta was also super good and was nice and moist, flavorful and had a nice balance of flavors as well. The caramelized onion sauce on the lamb shank was super tasty too. We have leftovers for later and didn't even get to try everything we wanted but will for sure be back again. The place was very clean and the service was super attentive. Great find and grateful to have a local restaurant like this.

Valery R.

Yelp
I've been searching for a place with good Mediterranean food for over a year, and Rehana is the first place in the Portland Metro area that serves meals that truly taste the way they're supposed to. The place seems to be family-owned, which adds to its cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The service was friendly and just the way it should be. We started with a fattoush salad as an appetizer and had beef kebabs as the main course. Both were absolutely delicious. I must highlight the quality of the meat--it was tender, juicy, and exactly how a kebab should be. The portions are also generous, so you're likely to feel full for the rest of the day. However, if you can, save some room to try their delightful desserts, tea, and coffee. Overall, it's a 5 out of 5 experience, and I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves Mediterranean / Middle Eastern cuisine.

Finn S.

Yelp
Incredible! Went there with a group of friends and the food was worth every penny. Good amount of food and staff was super nice.
google avatar

Yelp
This hole in the wall restaurant is located in the heart of Beaverton. It's owned by a lovely couple who makes a variety of halal and middle eastern food. The appetizer we tried is a deep fried rice ball called Koba. It's filled with meat and they have vegetables ones too. A unique dish that was very enjoyable! The sambosas was nice deep-fried filled with ground beef and tasty too! I enjoyed the Lamb shank tasted very tender and great flavors. It comes with rice and salad and don't skip put on the spicy garlic sauce. The beef kabob plate is tender and great spices in the meat. It comes with rice and salad and a delicious plate all around! Don't forget to try their cheesecake made in house along with some tea on the side. They also have baklava and other great items too!

Tim D.

Yelp
Food was great, owner was friendly. Besides the rice/meat dishes, enjoyed the Mezzah plate; comes with pita, and we ordered some extra Iraqi bread which was super good.

Julie S.

Yelp
This was my first time visiting this restaurant and I won't be back. My husband and I were planning to eat there, but the dining room was in such disarray (Stuff all over the table in front, takeout containers piled along the window, someone's jacket thrown on the floor) when we walked in that we decided to order take out instead. It only took about 20 minutes, but the food was cold after our 10 minute drive home, which means it must have been luke warm when it was served. The portions were adequate, but certainly not generous, and I've eaten much better Mediterranean food.

Lynne E.

Yelp
The falafel plate made me cry happy tears. I have not had such a perfect meal In a really long time. Can't wait to come back for more. Thank you Rehana!
google avatar

Pearl B.

Yelp
Limited menu but not bad. More on Mediterranean than Egyptian. However it was not very pleasant dine-in date night. I was overwhelmed with the smell. The place is kinda of rancid (hard to describe grease + damp) Definitely NOT enough ventilation in the "kitchen" behind the counter. The table was not dirty but not clean look either. Doesn't matter how far from stoves, my jacket got stinky for days. To respond to owner. What I tried to do? It's called "review". Directly from customer that paid for their meal and wasn't happy with the value but gave you good tips anyhow. Hope you can take it with open mindset and welcome to our town.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
Amazing experience. The food is incredible and very affordable. Delicious Mediterranean fare served by the friendliest family. We were treated to an amazing experience when going out for my friend's birthday dinner. The kabobs were tender and so flavorful and not at all dry. The rice is delicious and the chicken was flavored perfectly. We also enjoyed a hummus plate with bread, and it was some of the best I've had! Overall I loved it and am looking forward to returning soon!
google avatar

Beth M.

Yelp
Wow....just....Wow! After some research tonight to find a new place for some Mediterranean food, I found this place. My goodness, am I happy we did. Upon arrival we were greeted with sweet blinking lights and festive music. The owner welcomed us immediately. So charming and kind. We ordered a Mezzah plate. Dolma combo, falafel and then kebabs and shwarma atop Iraqi bread. Everything was perfection....and is homemade by the owning family. The baba and falafel is like none I've had anywhere else and all the meats were fresh and juicy. Nothing dry, overcooked or tasteless here. Everything is full of flavor...and the desserts are equally as delicious. We will definitely be back!! Thank you for a wonderful evening.
google avatar

Jon B.

Yelp
Wow, those food was great! My friend and I went here for lunch and both had an entree served on a giant soft flatbread with hummus. I had the chicken kebab + beef shawarma. The owner kindly pointed out that the best part of the bread was in the middle under the hummus! We also split an order of musqaa (?), which was fiery enough but not mouth-burning. The owner also gave us a taste of two different desserts- also a "wow". On the downside- the physical plan of the restaurant isn't very ... well, it isn't really very much of anything. It's the proverbial hole in the wall kind of place. Go here for the food and the friendly service. (I think a hole in the wall place can't get 5 stars.)
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic food and service that makes you feel like family. Awesome music fills the air during your meal. Highly recommend everything! The kabobs, shawarma and kofta, as well as the rice and hummus! Coffee is excellent in addition to the dessert! Treat yourself to this authentic Egyptian/Mediterranean experience!
google avatar

Kitty K.

Yelp
This is the 3rd business in this space in less than 3 years, and this is by far the best! Good portions and presentation. Nice variety of choices and some not so common choices. Desserts are all made in house. The owner is an absolute delight and provides very hospitable service. Will certainly return to try the rest of the menu.

Brielle W.

Yelp
Incredible food, flavor, and service. The spicy macaroni and eggplant special were phenomenal. A lot of options for vegetarians. Don't skip the Iraqi tea!
google avatar

Amelia G.

Yelp
Went here for the first time the other night and absolutely loved it. Upon arriving we were greeted with a friendly welcome and great music. Everyone was super helpful and informative about the menu and our food came out quickly. Everything we had was delicious and we are excited to come back and try more. Would definitely recommend this place!

Lmnop P.

Yelp
10/10 would go again. Absolutely the best Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food I've ever had, and made with lve you can see, smell, feel, and taste. Do not miss this place!

Hanna I.

Yelp
I had an amazing experience with the customer service! Since it's Ramadan, the staff were incredibly kind and understanding (very Muslim friendly) They even went out of their way to accommodate us by preparing our food later so it would be warm and ready for us to break our fast. The hospitality was exceptional, and the food quality was fantastic. Clearly made with care and love. The owners were the first to greet me with a warm welcome. I will definitely be coming back again!

Yelp
What a hidden gem.... Staff was amazing and even helped my partner not just have another Gyro but try some authentic cuisine -- WOW!!! It did not disappoint. Also, as a dj the downtempo, Middle East inspired beats made for a cool vibe.
