My best REI story comes from Cali, but you'll appreciate their return policy. I decided to glissade Shasta in June and the chute was pure ice. Reaching speeds way too far from safe, I knew I was going to brain myself on some boulder if I didn't change my velocity. Kicking myself from the slide, my entire body came to a stop only after grinding across a field of rocks and scree. In the end, my butt looked like a Looney Tunes firecracker had exploded there. So, I moseyed into REI (it may have looked like a mosey, but it was really just my sore bottom), and explained that these snow pants weren't up to snuff. The employee looked at the shredded remains, but took them back.
REI is mecca for the outdoorsies. I know that in the Michigan suBLURBs they cater more to the walking and biking crowd. But it's just reassuring to know that climbing gear is available for me when I head back out West, or that super-awesome kayak when I'm ready to upgrade.
As with each of their stores, quality does not suffer from the chain. Often times (and this is so, so true along Haggerty), chains mean Marleyesque manners and Scroogerific service. Not here. REI trains educated employees who will spend time with you to make sure that those hiking boots or backpack fit just right.
Since this is a co-op, 10% of your yearly purchases will come back to you (as "part-owner") sometime in late Winter/ early Spring. You can cash this out, but it comes with a nice coupon so you may wish to splurge.
Some people think that REI is pricey, but I've been an outdoorsman for 20 years, and prices do not get better for such lite, durable equipment. This isn't Gander Mountain or Cabela's, so car-campers may wish to drive up to Novi or over to Dundee. But for those who actually plan to leave the road when they visit the Smokies, you'll find everything you need.
In the summer, REI offers cool passport activities for the kids, and there's a 20-foot (or so) rock-climbing wall in-store.
A "big-box" store that maintains the personal touch. A one-stop shop for all of your 'biners, or a new Life Is Good tee.
