I went here to purchase a Thule rooftop cargo box. The 1 I was interested in runs $1049. There was a Yakima box next to the Thule boxes. I was trying to open it when an male employee approached and said not to fiddle with it, I might break the key off in the lock. I assured him I would not bit he insisted. I told him if I couldn't work the mechanism then it was too difficult and not worth the money. I asked him he wanted me to just leave if I wasn't allowed to view items I might spend a $1000 on. He wouldn't respond but again warned me. I asked again if he wanted me to just leave and he walked off. I then easily opened 3 different Thule displays and was about to buy the Motion 3, but his encounter left a bad taste sorry left without buying. Pics show their item shelf tags. AVOID THIS STORE! I did end up buying the Thule rooftop box at the Ann Arbor REI‼️ The staff was so accommodating that I even became an REI member‼️ Ann Arbor Mi REI - AMAZING‼️ Northville Mi REI - HORRIBLE‼️

Google
John is great! Helped me get some new boots for my honeymoon to Norway. Extremely knowledgeable. Gear guru for sure. Lucky to have gotten help from him all while he was helping another customer too. Thanks John!!

Google
Rob in the bike section was extremely helpful with getting me a well fitting pair of cycle shoes. Everyone else in the store was also very friendly. Probably the best customer service I've had in any retail store!

Joseph Lee (Jo)

Google
The interior was louder than I thought, and the food waited 40 minutes.

Good vibes

Google
I've made about 5 trips here and every single time I'm asked if I need help in every department. Today, Margaret helped me find a pair of shoes that worked perfectly for what I needed. She also went above and beyond and shared stories in which she had the wrong shoes in the past and it nearly ruined vacations. She also showed me a lace technique for backpacking a descent that is much more comfortable. 10/10 would recommend her and this store

Google
There's a lot to see here: high-end apparel to freeze-dried meals, climbing ropes and water filters. Good selection of cookware and camping equipment.

Google
We were helped in our quest for new hiking boots by the staff member and found some comfy well fitting boots with ankle support. The cashier was also patient while I took forever to remember the phone number associated with my account. It was an overall easy and worry free shopping experience.

Google
First time at this store and it was the first positive experience I’ve had at any REI. All of the staff was friendly but Tom D was above and beyond. He was extremely professional and knowledgeable for all things footwear. Entirely changed by perception of the REI brand/name.

Yelp
I've been to more REI's than I could possibly count across the country. This was by far the best customer service I've ever had. Probably will come back here over Troy location next time

Yelp
This is my first time back to REI in a few years. I was very disappointed with how I was treated and the lack of professionalism demonstrated by the personnel in the shoe department. We were not greeted nor spoken to in a courteous manner. We recognized the store personnel were busy assisting other customers so we took the initiative to look at shoes and found a design we liked. We brought the selection and waited until an attendant was available. The attendant was rude and condescending in tone, insisting I was mispronouncing the shoe brand name. I found this very unprofessional in how it was communicated as well as she thought it was necessary to bring this to my attention. I didn't appreciate this type of customer service. I will not return to this REI nor recommend it to my friends anymore.

Yelp
My mountain bike needed some tuning up and Jason did a great job of taking his time and taking notes before he gave me an assessment of what needed to be done. Based on the things that the bike needed, Jason suggested comprehensive tuneup which did save me some $. Overall, I am happy with the speed at which they worked on the bike. I got a text message that the bike was ready to be picked up. Jason knows what he is talking about. Everything went well.

Yelp
Friendly staff helped me find a pair of hiking shoes/boots. Having wide feet they helped me with 5 or 6 pairs. Eventually found that Salomon made the best pair for me. Opted to get the 30 dollar membership since I expect to buy some more outdoor items soon.

Yelp
Recreational activities is right. Sleeping bags are hanging from racks here like pieces of clothing. Gigantically tall standup paddle boards. Variety of bike racks and bike accessories and a few bicycles too. So many interesting items. They even have stroopwafels, love them. Missing them the last 5+ weeks now.

Robin A.

Yelp
At checkout the cashier, Christy, became very frosty with me when I declined donating to their pet park project. "Oh, so you don't want to help the people in wheelchairs?" I felt like I was in an episode of South Park. LOL! Nice try with the guilt trip. If I could give 5 stars to the lovely lady who helped me with shoes I would, but unfortunately her name wasn't on the receipt.

Yelp
I had problems with my tires. I bought a small part, but it would not be in for a week. Terry from the bike department took care of fixing the tire problem even without an appointment. It ended up taking him at least a half hour. This is some of the best customer service I have ever received. I will continue to shop there.

Yelp
Still a great shopping experience here. Needed to look for some trail hiking shoes. Angelika helped me pick out a pair. She had plenty of useful info and set me up with a nice pair of Merrill Moabs. I have always appreciated the help I get at this location. I don't shop here often but when I do I am never disappointed. Erik was very pleasant in cashing me out. All associates were wearing masks and hand sanitizer was available.

Yelp
Oh my goodness - this place is so OVERWHELMING. Here's the deal - if you don't know what you're looking for and haven't done too much of research then I highly suggest you step away. This isn't your normal outdoors shopping; this is mainly for serious outdoor people. You will literally come out an arm and leg - don't get me wrong you'll definitely find what you need here especially if it's a special items. If you can't wait for your amazon shipment to get in than here's your last minute shopping area - high in purchases and some clearance items are basically down to normal prices. Staff is very helpful - if you know what you're looking for but don't come in here blind and/or without a friend who knows a little information. What I also found out when i recently walked in is that they offer some items that you can rent instead of paying full price for an item you know you'll only use ONCE. **Think about that option**

Yelp
My favorite/Go to place for my adventure needs. I love REI, for their quality of service and products. the employees are very helpful and nice. The best selling point is the technical help you receive when you are shopping for something. with 10s of hours of online research and you still don't know what to pick. they will solve it for you in few minutes. and the best part if that don't work out bring it back. they have everything you might need for your outdoor and idoor adventure. kayaks, backpacks, meals, energy bars, cameras, cloths, jackets, bikes boots etc etc, and plenty of options and all high quality brands. they do service bikes as well. One small thing. they do not carry extended sizes like Long pant sizes and shoes beyond 11( no half sizes). so I end up ordering all possible sizes online and return a lot.

Paulinusia A.

Yelp
The most insufferable people work here. The cashier decided it was appropriate to point out my chapped lips and try to upsell a membership that I did not want. She would not take no for an answer and did not listen to me the first time. I allowed her to ring up the initial amount because she told me that I would get $30 off my purchase today but failed to mention that 1. I couldn't use that $30 today and 2. The membership is an additional $30. She also gave me a peering stare when I told her I didn't have a favorite national park. I don't hike. I went here for running shoes. No need to be judgmental. Overall the most annoying experience. I was about to walk away simply from this one interaction with this woman.
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
Over half the people in the store did not have masks on. Come on REI you can do better.

Brian A.

Yelp
Poor customer service. I bought a pair of walking shoes last month. I took them back as they were showing excessive wear. REI would not replace them as they said they had "excessive wear". They would even entertain the possibility that there was something wrong with shoes. After decades of being a customer of REI they have lost me as a customer.
google avatar

Yelp
We love this place and you can get great deals online and then check to see if it's in the store. They will match their online price. Even though they don't seem to keep the inventory updated with pricing on the store to match, they still get 5 stars for being a great company.

Yelp
Nice place - the manager (I think Raul?) was a super good guy - had a little issue with a return and he stepped up and did it right. Thank you.

Elana L.

Yelp
I came in to look at sandals. I found the pair I like but needed to special order a size they don't carry in store. The 2 people in the shoe department were very helpful and brought out everything I asked, super nice. They directed to me customer service to make the special order. The cashier said that they don't carry that size (woman's 5) and was pretty sure the brand didn't make that size. Didn't bother checking further. While standing in the stores front area, I went on olukai's website, found the sandals I wanted in my size and ordered them online. Only took me 3 minutes. I would have preferred to support giving my money to a brick and mortar establishment, but they didn't want to bother helping...disappointing customer service by the cashier.

Yelp
I visit REI often, different locations around the US. I bought my Black Diamond distance z trekking poles and snow baskets here last summer. I didn't research the installation of the baskets to the poles until a snowshoe weekend but it turns out that I need a different tip for the poles. No big deal, I'll stop by and purchase them as well. They still have distance z in stock and the baskets too. They do not have the extended pole tips. At all. Pretty disappointed. All said and done I bought the adaptors elsewhere. I don't have the same blind faith that I once did in your inventory REI
google avatar

Naz K.

Yelp
Understaffed and the few that working there have no clue about the product offered at Rei. I could get the same products online much cheaper. Due to the lack of service in the store I ended up anyhow googling for the information. Not worth the long trip to REI and such a waste of time.
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped in the bike d department and the person that waited on me was a bit disappointing they were not real friendly it was kind of a turn off. thank goodness though I went to the shoe department and the two women sales clerks were very friendly they redeemed location!

Tyler M.

Yelp
The store is set-up like it's April 2020. Clerks are completely surrounded by plexiglass. There are tables acting as obstacles in front of the counters so you can't get too close. Employees are all masked so you cannot see them smile. This all made for a very cold and unwelcoming shopping experience. This used to be a great store to visit.
google avatar

Vandana S.

Yelp
This is the store to be if your just started to do adventurous trips . They help you with all your questions doesn't have to be just about their. products but u can ask them about any questions about ur trip or which trial is easy or hard . They always answer ur questions with honesty. The bike shop in store is lil busier then the rest of the store may be they can add more staff in that part of the store. Yes they are lil on the pricier side but their quality of products are really good . They also have garage sale often so U can also check that out.

Yelp
This place is not for the casual outdoorsperson. It is for hardcore bikers, backpackers, etc., and upper middle-class wannabees that can burn through a grand on a bike or $300 on a down sleeping bag. I am neither, but I still love this place. My Fred Flintstone feet are happier than they have been in their entire long, becalloused lives since I have become a convert to the Keen crowd. Most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I am actually resorting to shoe-gooing the heel of my older casual pair, even though I have a newer pair. God I love those shoes. It nearly brings a grown man to tears. Our Coleman stove finally gave up the ghost after 10 years of car camping. REI staff hooked us up with a dual fuel version that will outlive the apocalypse. This thing is built like King Kong's brick you-know-what, and nearly EVERY piece on it is replaceable. I hope to find a special recipient for it in my will. For the budget-minded, you can pick up some pretty good buys on clothes from the Clearance Rack. The other review hit the business-end details, so I won't repeat other than to say it is worth it being a co-op member. Just join.
google avatar

Kelley W.

Yelp
I love REI! I'm a member of the co-op, have REI gift cards on the top of my gift lists, and find the employees to be huge asset. While I like Darin E's description of the store, I do think that thanks to the incredible customer service this place can be for the casual outdoorsperson. I'm not a hardcore anything (except eater, maybe?) but I love to hike with my dog, camp, ski, travel, and ride my cruiser around town. I have been to this location many, many times for a variety of reasons. I am particularly fond of the shoe department guys that sold and helped me learn to adjust my Chaco sandals which have become my favorite pair of functional footwear. I also recently went in for some new hiking boots - I thought I was set on the Merrell Chameleons after lots of research but asked the guy what he thought would be best for a hiking boot that works for snowshoeing in the winter. He recommended the Keen Targhee II because he uses the men's version for exactly the same thing and found the comfort and water protection to be highly superior. That's what I like - employees that not only know their product but actually use it. I fell in love with the Keens and thanks to their ultimate return policy (no seriously, http://www.rei.com/help/guarantee.html) I bought them that day. Other highlights include searching for the ultimate bug spray and getting a recommendation from an ex-military guy that works there, he made solid recommendations that were spot on and made my Costa Rica trip far less itchy. I've also enjoyed sampling the wide variety of Larabar flavors - you get a discount when you buy 10 or more! I love that the backpack selection has weights and things for you to try out to get a real sense of the product you're buying. Plus, the dog products are pretty rad too! Clearly I am one of those people that can just wander in this store for an hour or so :) I think you get the idea from reading all the reviews that it's as much a store as it is an experience. In my opinion, generally you will pay a little, not a lot more for products here but I find that the resources from the staff to workshops well worth the modest price increase. I like that as a co-op member I get 10% back and get to take advantage of the member garage sale to find great deals on used (often quite gently) equipment. I dig the REI brand of equipment that is equal to it's brand name counterparts at a better price. Bottom line, if you're looking for something in this shopping genre, it's not going to be a waste of your time to venture in and check it out.

Yelp
This location is hit or miss. Some of the staff bend over backwards to help members, others seem like you aren't good enough for their time. I went in there today with a few questions about hydration packs, seemed like I was bothering them with my questions about Nathan products. Selection seemed limited as well. I also asked and waited to find out about law-a-way on some clearance bikes, one person said he would get "a bike guy" to help, that "guy" never returned. This isn't the first time I have left emptied handed or found help in this store to be lacking. It's almost if the shoe guy's are the only ones who want to help. Everyone else is always too busy or just willing to gaff you off. I went to Running Fit, bought what I needed/ wanted and went home.

Yelp
If I have to shop it mine as well be here. Great clothes and gear. Yes the prices are a bit higher than other stores but their try and return policy awesome. I've taken back shoes 3 months later that I thought were wearing out faster than they should and they took them back no questions asked. The 15 or 20 dollar lifetime membership is a great purchase-It gets you into their REI garage sale that is twice a year, discounts on trips, and dividends paid back at the end of each year on regular merchandise purchased. Staff knows

Yelp
Hard to beat a place where you can return anything, any time, for a full refund. I bought a pair of climbing shoes at REI and realized after two wears that they weren't the right size. So, I returned them, fresh off my sweaty climbing feet, and got the size I needed. No questions asked. The service is amazing, the people are always incredibly helpful and non-pushy, and if you're a member of the co-op (as I am), you get a dividend each year to buy more fun stuff! In addition to the service, the inventory is also awesome. For climbing, hiking, biking, camping, etc., REI beats all its competitors in my opinion. If you need something for your outdoor adventures, REI is the place to be. :)
google avatar

Kellie D.

Yelp
The prices here are quite expensive, but you can't beat the excellent customer service and knowledge employees at REI bring to the table. My partner and I are just beginning to hike/camp and REI has been a life saver. I would definitely advise becoming a member for $20. You can return anything you buy here up to a year after purchase. This was useful when we bought hiking shoes and after walking a long trail, found out they were rubbing in the wrong places. Glad we didn't waste $150 on a painful shoe! We went back and exchanged and are now happy campers! Definitely go to REI for advice, but always be sure to price check online/Amazon we have saved a ton of money and feel like we now know what to look for in gear!

Yelp
My best REI story comes from Cali, but you'll appreciate their return policy. I decided to glissade Shasta in June and the chute was pure ice. Reaching speeds way too far from safe, I knew I was going to brain myself on some boulder if I didn't change my velocity. Kicking myself from the slide, my entire body came to a stop only after grinding across a field of rocks and scree. In the end, my butt looked like a Looney Tunes firecracker had exploded there. So, I moseyed into REI (it may have looked like a mosey, but it was really just my sore bottom), and explained that these snow pants weren't up to snuff. The employee looked at the shredded remains, but took them back. REI is mecca for the outdoorsies. I know that in the Michigan suBLURBs they cater more to the walking and biking crowd. But it's just reassuring to know that climbing gear is available for me when I head back out West, or that super-awesome kayak when I'm ready to upgrade. As with each of their stores, quality does not suffer from the chain. Often times (and this is so, so true along Haggerty), chains mean Marleyesque manners and Scroogerific service. Not here. REI trains educated employees who will spend time with you to make sure that those hiking boots or backpack fit just right. Since this is a co-op, 10% of your yearly purchases will come back to you (as "part-owner") sometime in late Winter/ early Spring. You can cash this out, but it comes with a nice coupon so you may wish to splurge. Some people think that REI is pricey, but I've been an outdoorsman for 20 years, and prices do not get better for such lite, durable equipment. This isn't Gander Mountain or Cabela's, so car-campers may wish to drive up to Novi or over to Dundee. But for those who actually plan to leave the road when they visit the Smokies, you'll find everything you need. In the summer, REI offers cool passport activities for the kids, and there's a 20-foot (or so) rock-climbing wall in-store. A "big-box" store that maintains the personal touch. A one-stop shop for all of your 'biners, or a new Life Is Good tee.

Farhad M.

Yelp
My review is for this store's bicycle repair shop & team. I had an issue with my bicycle's gear shifting. My dealer was blaming this on my shifting method. I brought my bike to REI. The REI team diagnosed the issue due to a broken small part. They replaced the part & fixed the shifting issue. In addition they replaced the damaged rear tire that I had bought from REI earlier. This was done free of charge. The team was very professional & technically knowledgeable. I am very satisfied with my experience.

Johnson B.

Yelp
Went over the w/e to look for a pair of Merrell shoes, to replace my old pair. Unlike DSW, they had them in stock. Yeti and Nick were great. They were able to explain the differences to me between some of the styles and sizes. Walked out w/ a brand new pair of shoes. I worry about being able to get them again; ordered another pair of same, which were already delivered to my house, yesterday. We joined the co-op, and are looking forward to going to their big clearance sales. We like the quality of their inventory, a close enough location [Northville], and all of the staff we dealt with, were terrific.
google avatar

Kristine G.

Yelp
We just got asked to leave, a bit rudely. Partially our fault, we assumed that all REI's have the same policies and allows dogs inside (since they sell gear for dogs), but this one doesn't. The REI personnel didn't have to be such a jerk about it, though.
google avatar

Erich Z.

Yelp
Ok, it's better than any of the other outdoorsy stores out there by a long shot, has much better selection and prices, and it's a co-op, so if you're a member you get real benefits, and it doesn't cost a ton like Costco, and you don't have to be a member to shop either. I was for the most part happy with the customer service and selection, though the clerk at the register was impatient and a tad rude when some things rang up at the wrong price. That's what you get in a college town though, I suppose.
google avatar

Alexandra K.

Yelp
Knowledge staff who are genuine. Never had bad customer service here. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Ned S.

Yelp
Great selection and customer service. Very helpful with returns as well. Got my backpack from here that didn't fit and they helped me to find one that fit well.
google avatar

Margaret W.

Yelp
When I was in there, I couldn't find a staff member to help me and when I finally did, I received a "canned" sales speech. Could NOT ride the bike outside but could ride it IN THE STORE(??). Understaffed/long wait to try on shoes. Product knowledge below average (looking at bikes, athletic shoes, and bike clothing.) They may do better in other areas of recreational items, on other days/ different times of the day :-)
google avatar

Tom F.

Yelp
Climb, climb, climb!!! Race your bike, and camp out. This place is seeeeerious about the outdoor sports. I mentioned that I went climbing in a recreation center http://www.yelp.com/biz/livonia-community-recreation-center-lcrc-livonia#hrid:OuLRKzdwq45lPfb3RAP44w/src:self Before I went to actually climb, I went here to see if I needed any special equipment. They have some real cool shoes for climbing. They actually have a small wall to test any equipment you may want to purchase. Climbing stuff aside they have a great selectin of bicycles for the serious biker, both racing and off road biking. They even had the special clothing for bikers. Then I thought I would try on some clothing. They had a sale rack. I put on some real tight biker shorts and shirt......I thought my wife and daughter were just going to bust up. They were laughing so hard they were crying....fat man in tight shorts....with black socks ...wow...not a nice picture...I think I'll stick to tennis. They also have camping equipment The staff is very accomodating. Since I wasn't sure what I needed they guided to what I may need.
google avatar

Phil M.

Yelp
Staff is stellar and beyond helpful. Multiple staff members helped me throughout the last couple months as I have acquired hiking boots and other backpacking gear. One staff member in particular helped me a great deal finding a backpack that fight and was comfortable with a lot of weight in it, which took a bit because of my mild scoliosis. He even told us not to get the backpack that day because a coupon was coming out later in the week so we could save 25% on it!
google avatar

Toni B.

Yelp
The sales associates at REI are customer service stars! I'm serious. I needed help finding a kit to fix a rip in a ski jacket for a friend and I had one sales person go over all of the options with me explaining how each one worked (all under $7 for those who want to know). Then I went shopping for winter boots and found a pair they didn't have in stock. The sales person in that department looked in the backroom three separate times for me and when he couldn't find the size and color I needed gave me the exact information for the boot that I could use to order off the website. And this was on a Saturday while they were extremely busy. The store looked amazing - clean, well stocked, and obviously the customer service is above and beyond what can be expected.
google avatar

Tanya L.

Yelp
The selection was meager (mind you, all I wanted was a fleece), customer service lazy and poorly informed (oh no, says the young female, we don't have any more Patagonia--while standing ten feet away from...yup, more Patagonia), the sizes picked over (everything was either in XS or XL). But what really pissed me off is the amount of pushy effort the cashier made to get me to buy into their co-op. What part of "No, thank you, I'm not interested" is so hard for you to understand? All in all, the only reason I even bought anything there was because I had a gift card; I will probably not be going back there in the foreseeable future.
google avatar

Katherine A.

Yelp
This place has always been fun to walk around, buy things for upcoming trips, and even learn a few tricks of the camping trade. However, I must recommend this location specifically because of an employee there, Mark. A few weeks ago, I went there looking for a sleeping bag and Mark spent over an hour with us trying to find the right one (I'm super tall, so it was tricky to find one long and warm enough), and even called around and their online/outlet center to get me a better price. We went back this weekend just to browse, and he remember our names, asked if I had received my sleeping bag in the mail, etc. It was so nice to know he cared and remembered. Totally recommend this place! Happy Adventure-ing!

Abbey H.

Yelp
I was not satisfied with the customer service at this REI location. The employee fitting me for a backpack fitted the backpack incorrectly. She was condescending, unhelpful, and unprofessional.
google avatar

STEVEN B.

Yelp
Love this place. Spend way to much time and money here.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
Got my mountain bikes tuned up here. They did a good job. Got a pocket knife with my yearly refund. Hell yeah!
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
I purchased a canoe from here about 3 months ago for the summer. The sales staff was really friendly and beyond helpful. I had an issue with the oar being damaged when I opened the box. I took it in, but nobody in the customer service department would handle the issue. They claimed that it had probably been damaged after purchased and on the drive home. So be it, I bought a piece to replace it. I wasn't really pleased with the customer service, but the selection is excellent and the prices are pretty fair.

Dee P.

Yelp
REI was so helpful when I was in the other day. I needed to buy hiking shoes and I tried on about 5 pairs before I found the perfect pair. They were so knowledgable with how the shoe should fit and took their time to explain things to me. Thank you REI for making my next hiking trip comfortable!

John M.

Yelp
Great product line, even better employees. Return policy is second to none!

Lisa F.

Yelp
Awful experience with REI today. Drove 15 miles round trip at lunchtime fighting traffic, construction and their insane parking lot (all perimeter spots are eateries ) and they did not have the product that the web-site assured me they did. The line for check-out was long and it took way too long for an associate to call for more help. Helpful tips like - always call to check inventory do not sit well with me. I'm in logistics and frankly if I can't believe your inventory confirmation feature on web-site, why do you have it?

Fred W.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this REI. I mostly use them for their cycling equipment and services, but I have also purchased tents and sleeping bags. The knowledge and expertise they exhibit is outstanding. They recently helped my purchase a backpack for my bike trips that is perfect for me and it was even on sale. I have had them work on my bikes before and they do a great job at tune-ups or overhauls.

M H.

Yelp
After my first visit to this store, I am sure to return. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, the store very neat and organized, and they had a wide variety of gear for all kinds of outdoor activities.
