Reilly's is considered more or less an insitution in Biddeford. They have been in business for 100 years so they're doing something right.... sort of.
They're well-known for their chocolate frosted donut. Luckily, today (Friday) if you buy one you get one FREE. Who doesn't love that? So I got 2 chocolate frosted and their maple cream donut also looked pretty awesome too. I'm a sucker for maple anything. I paid and dug in, in my car so my coworkers wouldn't see me pigging out on so many donuts.
First inital thought and taste on my maple cream donut? Smells great, but tastes gross. Extreme disappointment. Though there was a generous amount of 'maple' cream there was virtually NO maple flavor. All I could taste was.. crisco... or whatever fat laden product used in this cream. though the cream was light smooth and creamy there was not enough maple flavor for me to instantly think it's maple. It was a pretty donut and I had high hopes, I would have even taken a picture because it is a cute looking donut.
I understand the appeal of the chocolate frosted. First, let me start out by saying people must love these because they are cake donuts. They are not normal donuts, but cake donuts. Though tasty, not too heavy tasting, but being very tasty I was happy with it. The chocolate frosting, though VERY LIGHT handed is delicious and just amount of chocolate flavor and sweetness. It could really use more chocolate frosting.
Overall, it really depends on what you order which can result in a wonderful experience or pretty subpar in experience. I first went there and I got a whoopie pie and a donut twist with raspberry on one end and lemon on the other. The twist was great. HUGE, light and fluffy. The whoopie pie is not the style I like. It was far too dense, dry and hard-cake like. The cream in the center was lacking in flavor. Again, tasted like crisco. My second time I got a boston cream donut and something else that I don't remember. But as you can see, if I cannot remember the second donut then it really isn't worth remembering. The boston cream was good. But for 1.10 it should have been a little bit bigger (as you can see in the picture I posted). Also, when I was there, the display case left of the register we saw a fly sitting on a baked good. That was a turn off to say the least.
So all in all, if you like a nice cake donut, Reilly's is for you. They have a lot of other... old world(?) baked goods. Nothing fancy, donuts, creme horns, danishes, fruit bars etc. I wasn't super impressed, but this is the only place close enough to satisfy a donut craving that isn't DD.
