I didn't really have much context when it came to looking for rooms for our 2-night stay in Bruges. However, this hotel was very well-rated, and the fact that it was right in the heart of town (and along the canals) made it seem like a very good location. The hotel entrance itself is not right on the street, and it's a rather small entry to boot - making it feel like you are entering into a cozy little retreat even though you are right in the center of town. The folks at the front desk speak English pretty well and were very helpful in getting us set up with taxi rides when we needed them. They also were kind enough to offer us free pastries when we checked out early (6 AM) to catch a train back to airport in Brussels. Although it's a pretty tiny space, there is an elevator that will preclude you from having to lug any suitcases up the narrow staircases.
Perhaps the only downside of the room was the figuring out (and remembering) which way to insert the key and turn it to unlock the door - combined with door hinges that made it a bit of a challenge to turn the knob. Once inside, though, the room has a wonderfully rustic feel to it, with only the flat-screen TV hanging and the air conditioning giving any semblance you are in modern times. With a deluxe room, you can throw open the windows and enjoy the view of the canals that are straight ahead (as well as the many boats that will traverse the area during the course of a day). The bathroom amenities, though, are very updated - granite flooring and countertops, two sinks, and a modern shower, although, like many European-style hotels I have been to, there is not a full enclosure - so it can be easy to get water everywhere if you aren't cognizant of this fact. Overall, though, it's on par with other luxury hotels I have stayed at.
In all, I very much enjoyed our time that we spent in the hotel. Great staff at the front, a great room to stay in, and being able to throw open the windows and let the late summer breeze flow in from the canals - it's hard to beat. Definitely a great spot for a romantic getaway, and easily the hotel I will come back to stay at when I return to Bruges in the future.
