I finally got a chance to stop by Remas today with some friends. There are a couple great Yemeni places in town already, but I'm always happy to give a new place a chance.
The new owners did a great remodel with the former L. George's space, it looks classy and clean inside. The manager (and wife?) were very incredibly welcoming as well, they provided great service and explained things to us when we had questions. All of us are familiar with yemeni food, so we were eager to try a new take on it.
We had a big group, so we split the "Remas try for 6" which includes Haneeth, Masloug, Meat & Chicken Gallaba, and is served with Rice, Soup, or Salad (and a big smattering of super crispy french fries!) We also got a bowl of Remas Fahsah and tuna fahsah (a first for all of us) as well as some saltah, and plenty of bread.
The hosts were gracious enough to provide us with some free soft breads and hummus (delicious and smooth) when they brought out the salad - covered with good fresh vegetables and a delightful thick ginger and carrot dressing. The soups and bread came out next. The tuna fahsah was hearty, the flavor wasn't fishy, and the spices blended perfectly. The lamb in the Remas fahsah was well spiced, falling apart, and would be a great food for when you need something to make you feel loved. The saltah was similarly well made, extra hearty and chock full of vegetables.
The gigantic platter came out and wowed all of us. Tons of rice, fantastic haneeth and masloug, falling off the bone with tons of flavor. The haneeth is a type of roasted lamb, while the masloug is simmered in broth. Both were very good, I preferred the haneeth with its flavorful outside layer, but both were excellent. The gallabah was mixed in with the rice and very tender.
I would not hesitate to come back here and order anything on their menu (on top of yemeni food they have plenty of mediterranean dishes, breakfast, and a kids menu), with a side of a sweet and fruity smoothie or a spiced sweet tea.
The staff and owners did a great job and I'd love to see them succeed in this space!
