How Coffee Shops Became the Best Places to Drink Wine, Beer, and Cocktails | Bon Appétit

"Exceptional espresso made from a rotating roster of roasters sits alongside a well-curated drinks program of cocktails, wine, beer and amaro; the wine list includes local natural producers like Liten Buffel as well as bottles from France and Slovenia, while the constantly changing beer selection leans on New York craft brewers. Seasonal spritzes are a highlight even in deep snow, snacks make it easy to linger all day, and the relaxed, bouncer-free, TV-free corner space offers a chill vibe. The owners intentionally lean on higher-margin alcoholic offerings to keep coffee affordable, making it as appealing a spot for an evening drink as for daytime espresso." - ByAlex Delany

Google
I was so excited to try this place since I saw the pictures/instagram, their espresso drinks looked great- I ordered the brown butter sage iced latte w/ oatmilk, unfortunately when it came out I thought it was curdled… instead it was the butter that had turned back into clumps of butter :( I wish someone would have mentioned when I ordered it that it should be ordered hot only- definitely did not enjoy trying to drink it while chewing butter clumps.. very disappointing considering it was almost 7$ and went to waste.. would probably go back and try it hot another time when it’s not so busy

Food was delicious! Cute, cozy cafe. Offers very limited seating indoors and some outdoor seating. Plan to park along a side street. Staff was very friendly.

Google
I got the “egg on a roll #2” if I remember correctly, which had goat cheese and bacon. It was pretty good. The coffee cake my friend ordered was really good, and my coffee was great, I think I ordered the iced bombon. My friend got the brown butter sage latte which I also really liked. It had more of a savory flavor which was unique but I actually enjoyed it a lot.

Review of Remedy House, Buffalo Remedy House in Buffalo has a very charming and lively ambience that immediately catches your attention, even from the outside. Although we did not go inside, the atmosphere itself spoke volumes about its popularity and appeal. On a pleasant weekend morning, we saw many people sitting outside and enjoying their breakfast, chatting over coffee, and relaxing in a cozy environment. The place has a warm, welcoming vibe with a mix of modern and classic café aesthetics that make it perfect for casual gatherings or quiet mornings. The outdoor seating area looked well-arranged and comfortable, and the crowd seemed to be a good mix of locals and visitors, which gives a sense of community around the café. The overall setting, with its natural light, greenery, and calm surroundings, made it look like an ideal spot for brunch or a morning coffee. Even without stepping inside, one could feel the positive energy and pleasant rhythm of the place. Remedy House seems to be one of those spots in Buffalo where people come not only for good food and coffee but also for a peaceful and enjoyable experience. Definitely worth visiting next time.

Google
For the steep coffee shop price, I was expecting to get something a little better than a mocha which consists of mostly ice and milk right out of the jug. I have had much better coffee pretty much anywhere else. Also I can appreciate music, but not loud country music blasting in a coffee shop.

Google
Love it here! My friends and I come almost every weekend to hangout and eat their chicken salad sandwich and the BLT in the summer. Perfect place to walk in the evening to get a drink. Shoutout to Emmy V

Google
We visited here while staying in the area, and we can back each day for their coffee which was great. I will say the coffee is much better if you order it for there and it comes in a nice mug. The taste and presentation were so much better. One day they ran out of mugs and we had to get a to go cup. We were so disappointed it because it just wasn’t the same. It is located in the middle of the Five Points neighborhood with plenty of outside seating so you can enjoy the views, etc. The area seems to be a local hub of sorts with people walking all around on the weekends. 10/10.

Google
Came in and tried the salted caramel latte, wasn’t a fan at all. Not sure if it was a bad batch or what though. My gfs cold brew tasted better than mine so maybe it was just what i ordered. The customer service was excellent. I wasn’t a big fan of the other customers who have no manners whatsoever considering how crowded the shop is on saturdays. Might come back to try something else though eventually.

Yelp
It was such a good experience! They were so friendly and both the food and drink were really good. I have some dietary restrictions and they were very accommodating.

Yelp
This coffee shop is overhyped, the prices are kind bad and the last few coffees I've had here have not been worth it. The flavors really aren't my thing and the place is almost always packed -- meaning your wait is rough. There's other places that are more worth it that are nearby. The ambiance is beautiful don't get me wrong -- but the hectic back and forth of customers and servers makes the place a little much at times.

Yelp
A great stop for my first "office" of the morning and my first coffee, though the lack of accessible power outlets meant that I was only here for an hour until the power ran out on my laptop and it was time to head onwards. Remedy House appears to be a former home with seating inside and tables outside. I chose a cortado this morning and it was excellent. Served in the proper glass, the right amount of coffee and whole milk. They also have a bunch of baked goods. Friendly service, a neat vibe. But this isn't a laptop hangout. Yelp
Went for lunch and got the chicken salad sandwich, which was definitely not what I was expecting. If I hear chicken salad then I'm expecting something a bit more creamy and mixed together, but this was more like sliced pieces of chicken on a sandwich versus more a traditional chicken salad. It had an interesting taste to it, but I probably wouldn't order it again. I also wanted to check this place out again since the owners had changed and I wasn't sure what might look or be different. I feel like the items I saw on the menu seemed like the same stuff from before or similar at least, but the verdict still out if this will still be a lunch by check out regularly. That said dessert is still one of the better things I enjoyed for my experience. I got the chocolate chip muffin, which was a good size and maybe had a bit too many salt crystals on top but was still good.

Yelp
Ran into this place for a to go coffee. Both the latte and iced espresso were delicious. If you go, plan to sit down and relax. The atmosphere is like a European cafe. Yellow and navy reminded me of the Van Gogh yellow cafe painting. People eating looked satisfied. Inside is clean and modern. Will try again if we're in the area.

Yelp
i'm not a sandwich gal but these sandwiches i loved. not soggy, not too juicy, just crisp enough, filling but light. VERY fairly priced as well!! the staff was extremely friendly. the store itself is very cute and uniquely shaped (a triangle?) with tall windows that open so you are basically sitting outside because they open all the doors on a nice day lol. they're usually pretty packed at popular times but you shouldn't have a problem sitting down anyways with a short wait.

Danielle S.

Yelp
One of the best coffees in buffalo. And the EGG ON A ROLL WITH AOLI !! FIREEE. The seating is so limited in the winter so get there earlyyyyy. But in the summer the patio is to die for. Fast service but the food sometimes takes a long time.

Yelp
Happy to return here for breakfast. This place is small and it was hopping! Always great service and great drinks. We came here as we're making our way along the Tom and Jerry trail. This was definitely one of our favorites! My partner ordered a breakfast sandwich which was good. I got an interesting breakfast that totally made me think... This seems so European, it was delish and served with homemade jam. Great location. Fun people watching.
google avatar

Miguel V.

Yelp
The food was at least decent. I visited their website and found a breakfast sandwich that sounded incredible, only to be informed that it was no longer available. I was thoroughly disappointed. The ambiance is fantastic, but the pictures don't do it justice. It appears larger in the photos, but it's actually quite small in person. I had to sit outside on the rain-covered patio. It's located in Five Points, which is supposed to be a trendy area, but it gave me a Kensington vibe. The service was terrible. It seemed to take forever to get our sandwiches, and they weren't even that good.
google avatar

Myra C.

Yelp
The place is beautiful the service is great! Very fast the food yummy!!! I got a cortado and a yummy sub, so sad that it's closed now.... The ambiance was beautiful!
google avatar

Yelp
Go to spot to walk to on the weekends. The egg on a roll with cheese, prosciutto, and garlic aioli is my hands down favorite breakfast sandwich in Buffalo. Getting a window seat when the sun is pouring in is the cherry on top. It gets really busy on the weekends so considering ordering a head or just go to chill when you're not in a time crunch. In the summer the sides open and sitting outside is really nice too!

Joshua L.

Yelp
Remedy House is a must-go in Buffalo for brunch style foods in a chill dine-in or takeout space that caters for a casual coffee or a heavier weekend meal. The lattes, iced or hot, are high quality and stay smooth till the last drop in the cup. Having gone a few times, our favorite food item continues to be the pumpkin french toast which leads you to feel like you are eating the feeling of fall itself! The savory items like the chicken salad sandwich, the egg roll, and the cafe breakfast are also really solid options for those who want a full brunch flavor experience. Indoor seating could be quite packed but they have nice outdoor seating as well as rock slabs to chill on. Servers are generally great and get your orders back accurately and relatively in a timely manner.

Yelp
This is a nice little coffee house with indoor and outdoor seating. It's a nice neighborhood to walk in and then sit down, have a hot or cold beverage, and just take in the vibrant life within the neighborhood.

Yelp
This was such a cool place. It was my first time stopping in with my daughter. There is patio seating available in the warm months, but being February, the limited seating meant we had to take our order to go. Little bit of a bummer there, but the staff were very friendly and helpful. The place had a nice feel to it, little upscale feeling. The food is simple but SO Good. I got an egg on a roll, and my daughter got a seasonal egg on a roll which had their homemade sausage as well. The bread was outta this world. I could tell just by the feel of it still closed with the wrapping on it, that it was quality bread. And oh it was! So hard to find, just doesn't exist in most common places. Simple simple food can taste so amazing with fresh quality ingredients. I could taste a bit of cracked black pepper on my sandwich along with very nice cheddar. I could go on and on. Did I mention the bread though?? Oh, and their pastries looked so amazing. A pastry chef had to have made those. Very above and beyond just normal bakery items. For coffee I tried the cafe bombon. I was surprised that it came out iced. Thankfully it was still 20 degrees and not 5 like today haha. My daughter tried the chili mocha. It had quite a kick to it, and we were surprised to have found a chili pepper inside. I give you a big gold star, and will definitely be back when we have a better chance of scoring a seat.

Yelp
Came here for lunch and had an ok experience. Drinks- I ordered an iced jasmine green tea. It was pretty good! Food- I ordered a half Tuna hoagie, which came with a bag of chips. The hoagie was amazing, the tuna salad was so incredibly flavorful too! It was filling, but also messy. Service- staff was friendly, but the service was inconsistent. 4 people who ordered after me got their drinks before my iced green tea came out. I got my hoagie so long before my friend (who ordered a Turkey hoagie), that I finished mine before she got hers. Seating- there's no indoor seating, just outdoor if you can find it. Overall- food and drinks were good. Prices were fair. Service was friendly but slow and inconsistent.

Yelp
3.5/5 stars I felt like the coffee they served was overpriced for what I got. Was it the most terrible coffee of all time? No. But was it one of the best I've had in Buffalo? Also no. And for that price, I had to knock it down one star. The place itself is really aesthetically pleasing so I would come here if you wanted to catch up with a friend. But I originally came to study, which was my mistake. They had no plugs to charge your things or wifi. This however is my own fault and I shouldn't have assumed but this is why I knocked it down half a star. I do like how they close later than most coffee houses, and I do plan on coming back to try their food.

Deborah A.

Yelp
The restaurant Smelt, had bad service and over priced. They don't pay attention to the orders.

Yelp
Cold brew was awesome and you can actually taste the notes//flavor of cocoa. Decent prices and cute vibe in there.

Yelp
Highly recommend this west side gem. Delicious breakfast sandwiches, great coffee and pastries! Try to get a spot outside when the weather is nice! You can also order ahead online on their website.

Yelp
Coffee and pastries are fine but nothing out of this world. Service is pleasant but very slow.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for a yummy breakfast sandwich, and Remedy House Espresso has one of the best in Buffalo, NY. Located in the West Side of town, the location is super quaint as it sits on the corner. The staff was very kind and helped me navigate the new intro and exit section that they designed to accommodate social distancing guidelines. As for my breakfast, I got the Egg on a Roll with bacon and garlic aioli. YUM! Every bite was even more delicious than the the last. The bacon and garlic are add-ons, but I highly recommend that you do so! You can also add prosciutto or you can opt for a gluten free roll if. As for my beverage, I decided on a vanilla latte and I'm so glad I did. Perfectly made and enjoyed until the last drop. This was my first visit, but I will definitely be back! They have a very easy online ordering system, and I'm looking forward to being able to dine in once restaurants are able to reopen. Place your order soon, because you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Charlynn R.

Yelp
This was the best breakfast sando I've had in a while!! The online ordering was a breeze and pick up was ready on time! They even have butter block pastries up for grabs. If I could indulge for this breakfast every day I would!
google avatar

Leslie K.

Yelp
Lovely little cafe with good coffee and select bakery offerings. The inside is small and especially when there is a line, it can feel cramped indoors. Hopefully you meander over on a nice day and are able to snag a European cafe style table outdoors. Espresso drinks are better than average, I cannot comment on the drip. They do have a full drink menu including teas, as well. Baristas are hit or miss. I experienced a couple very friendly and helpful guys behind the bar and one female barista with a couldn't-care-less attitude. Get the breakfast sandwich. The pastries are ok but can get better ones elsewhere in the neighborhood. The sammy with the seasonal flavors (I had one with mozzarella/ pesto) was very good! You're paying a lil extra for quality here, mind you.
google avatar

Janus C.

Yelp
Looove this cafe! Love the bright yellow umbrellas, their seasonal lavender vanilla latte was delicious, as was their iced chai latte. Their hoagies are substantial and yummy, but their egg sandwiches are my absolute faaaavorite.
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
Simply the cutest little cafe with amazing coffee and likely delicious food (I haven't tried any myself yet but will be back soon to dig in!) Came here with a friend on a Wednesday afternoon and there were two other people in the shop. Extremely nice staff and fantastic service. We both got the chili mocha latte: A double shot of espresso with house-made chili mocha syrup and steamed milk. HIGHLY recommend if you like a little spice! Definitely check this place out!

Yelp
To start ... not very friendly counter service. That's HUGE - and here it was severely lacking in both personality and graciousness. Brown butter chocolate chip cookie. Pretty Good. Cafe Bombom done completely wrong ... in of itself it tasted fine - but a visual mire. If I was specifically meeting someone - I might think about returning - but other wise; I can't see myself making the effort.

Yelp
COVID-19 Update: I sooo miss having coffee at Remedy House. While they are open for contactless pickup until 2pm, their space is so quaint and bright, you can't help but miss a morning where you enjoy a cortado or one of their amazing salad and sandwiches. It is one of those spots that just brightens your day to be in. I can't wait until I'm able to walk in again and enjoy a conversation with a delicious cup of coffee, amazing mocktail and a baked good. Here's to hoping we can do this again soon! Thank you for continuing to exist Remedy House to all of of us who continue to support our local coffeeshops!
google avatar

Yelp
Why change the best breakfast sandwich I've had in Buffalo? Well they did!!! We just returned from Florida and our hitting the restaurants we miss. First they changed the roll, which used to melt in your mouth from a bakery in East Aurora. They didn't stop there, they changed the cheese. Well they were still very busy however, I won't be back!!!
google avatar

John V.

Yelp
This place is awesome! The staff is very friendly and intelligent about their product. The manager was very polite to us when my girlfriend and I stopped by!
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
I've been back to remedy on numerous occasions, and I can honestly say it is a staple in the five points neighbourhood. I am absolutely never disappointed, every penny is worth both the experience and the great coffee/espresso and mouth watering baked goods! I cannot write in words how AMAZING the almond croissant is, like if diamonds were edible, it is the Aston Martin classic car of classic pastries, a piece of art, flaky with butter, gooey sweet middle, flaky crust outside with a generous coating of slivered almonds and sweet sugar. Pair it with a handcrafted latte or cappuccino to dip those flay tendrils in and you will be the happiest person on earth. 6+/5 stars if that was an option, must actually make it for happy hour one day too!
google avatar

Maria B.

Yelp
I've been here a number of times. Love the seating. The logistics feels difficult and I'd think they could make them easier. The coffees are good but they take forever. Or so I thought. Then I ordered a sandwich one day. It was very good once it arrived, but it took longer than forever. I'd give 5 stars if it was easier and slightly more efficient. Street parking.
google avatar

Hannah L.

Yelp
"This must be the place," I think as I walk in on the black and white tiled floor. Blue walls and a cozy space confirm that Remedy House must be the place for great coffee. I enjoy stopping here to chat with friends or to do work. When the weather is nice, the patio is the perfect place to sip and think. The coffee itself is delicious. I get a cappuccino almost every time I venture in, and I'm never disappointed. Their menu is on the short and sweet side, which is never a bad thing! I'd love to try some of their other offerings. They do offer a few baked goods here and there, as well. Staff is super friendly and brings your coffee order to you. Seems to be a place full of regulars, I get a sense of community inside. 5/5 for a reason. Get yourself to Remedy House!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
They have decent food, the coffee can be hot or miss depending on how busy they are. I highly recommend the Italian sub~

Bob G.

Yelp
Food and coffee are awesome and affordable. This place has great ambiance, service and value.
google avatar

Susan N.

Yelp
Cute little cafe on the west side. It's pretty small inside and can feel cramped when it gets busy. There are a few tables outside to enjoy your food. I ordered the egg/cheese breakfast sandwich and it was pretty good! I would return to try their coffees.
google avatar

Selina S.

Yelp
Remedy House is a really cool place, it has cocktails to pair with your coffee as well as an array of breakfast food. There is both inside and outdoor seating and both are very cute in their own way. I'll usually grab a coffee from here and then head over to a nearby pastry shop for something buttery...
google avatar

Lara H.

Yelp
Fantastic neighborhood coffee shop with friendly staff and great coffee and tea. I am a tea-only drinker and I loved their iced tea - we actually went two days in a row! They also have a delicious breakfast roll sandwich and a few other food options.
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
If I lived in Buffalo, I would also live in Remedy House. This spot is as darling as they come. To give you a taste, picture sidewalk seating straight out of a European city, wrap around floor to ceiling windows that also serve as sliding doors, a delicious and creative menu and the best darned playlist (bring on the Billy Holliday!). The light pours throughout this triangular (think Flat Iron in NYC) shaped building. It's also conveniently located a stone's throw from Five Points Bakery, a landscaping/plant shop and a cute West African apparel boutique. I enjoyed every minute of my visit and wish I didn't have to leave. Bonus from the inside: being able to see all of pups through the big windows hanging out on the sidewalk!
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
I love a coffee shop that also serves wine. I love it even more when it comes in a pretty glass. I love it the most when it also serves up mouthwatering breakfast sandwiches with PROSCIUTTO. So yeah, I love Remedy House. Pre-COVID this was a fave spot to come with my laptop and get some work done or meet with a client or colleague. Now it's usually a quick treat when I feel like I deserve something special. Summer and warmer weather is very nice here. Lots of spots to sit in the five points area. Bees can be a bit of a hassle but they are just trying to live their lives. But for real get the egg on a roll and add prosciutto. You will not regret it!
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
Love the location of this coffee shop right on the corner W.Utica and Road Island - iron shaped building between Five Points Bakery and Urban Roots Market. I would love to come here in during the warmer months in Buffalo and sit outside at the cute tables! I had a latte today, it was well made and had a nice amount of froth. No indoor entry right now - have to order and wait outside. They have a yellow awning to stand under while ordering. I'll be back! Support local!
google avatar

Daisy K.

Yelp
Extremely cute (but tiny) cafe. The smallness adds to the charm in my opinion. I've been wanted to come to remedy house to try their seasonal flavors and the Lavender vanilla latte was not a disappointment. Sat outside to enjoy the morning and was happy even when it started to rain. Lovely staff. Right next to butter block which is an added bonus.
google avatar

Mehrul Singh R.

Yelp
Always have a good time visiting Remedy, and it's so convenient to grab baked goods from Butter Block, then enjoy coffee and something to eat. The staff is welcoming and kind, the service is quick. They also have a separate area for pickups for online orders. I got their honey tahini latte, which might be seasonal but was perfect!! This may be new favourite latte.
google avatar

Einas S.

Yelp
How adorable is the Remedy House!!! There are lots of tables outside to watch the families and couples with their dogs and babies go by while you sip one of their many beverage choices. You order on line and they give you a pick up time. When you arrive you go to the yellow awning and they have an open window where they deliver your order to you. The staff is really cheerful and seems to know all their regulars by name. The Veggie Hoagie we selected, was filled to overflowing with carrots and artichoke, lettuce , radishes and Avocado! The whole loaf of bread was fresh , toasted and delicious! It came with the chips but we also got the Farro salad which was delicious! It had carrots and raisins and pumpkin seeds and the dressing wasn't too heavy or greasy. We got Maple Yogurt with Granola for dessert. They have a wonderful dessert selection but on Mondays they aren't available. But the yogurt was delicious and we were stuffed after everything anyway. But definitely planning on going back on a different day to try the desserts. So go sit outside in their charming garden setting and enjoy a meal and the atmosphere.

Yelp
In town for the weekend and this spot is such a vibe. The coffee was amazing and their egg sandwich came on this amazing piece of bread that I'm kinda craving getting another one tomorrow!

Yelp
I saw a couple of reviews starting with "hidden gem". That is really true for this place. On the corner of Rhode Island and W. Utica you will find the Remedy House Espresso. It is a wedge shaped and almost "see through" place with big glass sliding doors on both sides. The day I was there the temps outside were far from terrace weather, but I can imagine nice outside seating in the summer. Remedy House is not very big, the tables are close together, but somehow that is not bothering. Some tables have a marble top, it seems to be recycled marble, very nice. They have everything you expect in a coffee shop, of course, but also a full bar. The cappuccino was excellent and they make every cup into a little piece of art. A heart, a leaf, great. Did I mention the taste was great? They also have some small bite plates.
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
Hidden gem alert! Let your classy hipster self loose when you come here. Remedy House is well named, because I can guarantee they've got the juice to nurse you. You'll be absolutely charmed when you step in the door. I've passed by this little spot on the corner before, and have heard it be mentioned in passing on occasion, but never thought to check it out until Alex L. recommended it! The exterior definitely masks just how gorgeous this place really is. The kicker with this place is, it's not your average coffee shop. Yeah, they've got the essentials - espresso, duh, and lattes (+ gorgeous latte art!), even loose leaf tea for those of you who don't like to down a cup of coffee all the time. BUT, they've also got a full-bar here. Wine, cider, the local stuff too! I don't know many places in Buffalo where you can get a glass of wine and a latte under the same roof - definitely makes this place totally unique. There's also some small bites here, like pastries, and I've seen a super cool cheese board in pictures that I'm interested to return and try. I wouldn't expect to come here and stuff my face though, they're definitely more like 'snacks' than anything close to a meal. Still. This place is all-around great. It's a fantastic space to relax and work in for a few hours, catch up with a friend, or just chill. (Lastly, the pillows on the bench they have here seriously make for the most comfortable, relaxing experience. Highly recommend them.)

Eli R.

Yelp
Best staff and best cold brew always feel at-home when i stop by this place. And the adaptable windows in the summer is a real treat!
google avatar

Gina B.

Yelp
Smells just like my grammas house. Coffee was great, breakfast was great. Such a cool vibe!

Jessica W.

Yelp
Remedy House is a place that's actually become easier for me to go to with the pandemic. Before, the interior was very cramped and always busy, and not stroller-friendly. Now that ordering and pickup take place outside, those are non-issues. Plus, I appreciate their online ordering system and the ability to order ahead of time. I'm limiting my caffeine intake at the moment so I've abstained from Remedy House's beverages, but the food is quality. I believe the pastries come from Butter Block, and they are excellent. The one I don't like so much is the milk chocolate pistachio brownie. I like pistachios, but I don't like them in my brownies. I also prefer a dense, fudgy brownie, and these are more cake-like. For savory food, I've had the veggie hoagie, and the egg and cheese on a roll. I like both a lot; they both use fresh, good ingredients and they're delicious. I did feel that they were both hard to eat, in that I couldn't really get my mouth around the whole sandwich. The breakfast sandwich was especially messy because the roll itself is pretty small, and the egg ends up spilling out when you bite into the sandwich. If you're not eating on-the-go, this isn't a big deal, but if you are, it's a hassle. Still, the food is good, the staff is friendly, and it's within walking distance of home for me, so I'll be back.
