The Best Restaurants in East Portland | Eater Portland

"With shiny gray walls lit by Edison bulb chandeliers, Remember Spirits and Restaurant shares space with the neighboring unrenovated strip mall bar (they have separate entrances). It’s also a welcome Chinese surprise in an area dominated by General Tso. Instead, diners will find a short menu of dumplings, noodles, and buns. Try the steamed and fried bao zi filled with pork and sauerkraut, followed by stir-fried beef noodles kissed with wok hei." - Rebecca Roland

Third time here, read this. Food always has been delicious. Got pan fried BBQ pork bao. Bun was tender and crispy. Also got crispy cumin tofu and was surprised how tasty it was. The server was sweet and shared her Halloween candy with me too! Haha. Place has been open 1 year and omitting the reviews before that this place is actually a 4.6 rating. What's holding this place back? My guess, internal relationships and mixed atmosphere. I doubt it could handle being busy but still come try the wonderful food!Honest.

This is the first time I've ever felt moved to review a restaurant on Google. By far, my favorite dumpling in Portland. Staff is so kind and lovely, space is nice. FOOD IS OUT OF THIS WORLD. Recommend the scallion pancake, pork and sauerkraut bao zi, and honestly everything else is dank too.

Best Sezchuan chinese I’ve had a very long time. The bowzi are the best in town. The Soup dumplings are amazing. The mapo tofu, the rices dishes, havent had a bad bite so far. I eat at this place twice a week at least, staff is friendly, a true mom and pop type place too. A+++

I took my kids and partner to dinner here because we received a coupon in the mail. Excellent service and a very clean nice dining experience. We really enjoyed everything we ordered. The special beef fried rice and soup dumplings were especially good. We will definitely be back!

There are no burgers, no fries, no milkshakes etc...... it's all Chinese food. We ordered chicken fried rice. The menu didn't indicate it was spicy like it did with other dishes but when we got it home it was so spicy we couldn't eat it. We also got the beef dumplings. They were more like wontons with an unrecognizable blob of something in the center that tasted what I imagine wet dog food would taste like. The bartender was nice but a little preoccupied with anything other than customer service. She forgot to put our order in so after 20 minutes we inquired about our food and she said "oh, they didn't see your ticket so they're just now starting your food". Mind you, we were 2 of only 4 patrons in the whole place!! And the only ones who were ordering food. She never asked if I wanted anything to drink. But she made sure my man had his drinks in a hurry. Just before we got there, apparently one of the restrooms was flooded with water. Rhe owner decided to vacuum the water up with a really loud vacuum that I believe was a regular vacuum and not a wet dry vacuum but that's neither here nor there. It was extremely loud and obnoxious and made it difficult to play video poker. The machines were very hungry and barely let us play but that's not their fault. Anyways, I just thought I would share my experience with that place. I wouldn't recommend it.

Best bao zi and Xiao long bao I have had. Everything that I have tried off the menu I would order again. My family and I love to eat here every few weeks, the staff is always nso nice. The beef scallion pancake and fried rice noodles are great.

Google
This review is for the Remember Chinese Restaurant, not Cleary’s bar: the food is excellent. We had mapo tofu buns, a scallion and egg pancake and a sesame noodle dish that were all delicious. Interesting, quality Chinese food served, not the standard dishes found at most Americanized Chinese restaurants. Friendly staff. We will be back. Highly recommended!

Yelp
My first (and probably only) experience was subpar. As the only customers, we sat in an empty dining room for at least five minutes until finally flagging down the elderly bartender in another area. She then summoned the owner/cook who was very pleasant. We barely touched the Mapo Tofu. The sauce was decent, but there was something very off with the tofu. Portion was very generous though. The Special Beef Braised Rice was better, but still meh overall. Too many tough fatty pieces stood out. A side order of rice was ample. The menu is quite vast, especially the alcohol options. The Beef Scallion pancake was good, not great, but again, a good deal. The interior is definitely bland and dated. I suppose you come for value given the portions. Reviewers seem to like it so maybe listen to them.

Yelp
Love their bbq pork buns!!! It takes 20 mins to make after ordering but its so worth it and the ladies at the bar are a vibe!

Yelp
I got the Xiao Long Boa and the Beef Noodle Soup with picked veggies. it was all delicious. I look forward to going back and trying other dishes.

Yelp
Very sweet little restaurant in shopping center that has had struggles. Definitely would recommend giving it a shot though. Service was very attentive since it was pretty quite. Got the Xiao Long Boa and the Shrimp Fried Rice Noodles both were excellent. Will for sure come back!

Yelp
Best Szechuan Chinese I've had in portland in a very long time. The Mapo tofu is perfect, and they don't skimp on the tongue numbing peppercorns. The Bowzi are great, and i could eat two dozen of the soup dumplings. Beef noodles were on point too. Place is a hidden gem. Staff is also extremely friendly, clearly a family operation. Everything done with a lot if care. And open late! Go there. And eat dumplings.
