12 Best Rooftops and Restaurants for Outdoor Dining in Asheville | Eater Carolinas

"The sister restaurant to downtown’s Bouchon, this casual East Asheville brasserie offers the same menu of comforting Parisian classics in a warm and inviting space decked out in modern French country farmhouse decor — oh, and there’s ample parking, too. The pommes frites are a must, as are the lobster-filled ravioli, quiches, and fresh PEI mussels, which are all you can eat on Tuesday and Wednesday. The spacious covered patio overlooks the pétanque courts, which — should you find yourself stuffed — is a great way to let your food settle while you play so you can grab some dessert to go. The creme brulee, based on an original recipe from 1691, is a great sweet finish." - Brook Bolen

Farm-to-Cocktail Bar Opening in Durham - Eater Carolinas

"RendezVous, the sister concept of French comfort food restaurant Bouchon, has a summer 2018 opening set for 184 New Haw Creek Rd. in east Asheville. The locations will share the same food and wine menu, which boasts steak tartare, a cheese plate, moules frites, and more. As a bonus, RendezVous will be outfitted with eight pétanque courts — pétanque is a game in the same sports family as bocce." - Katie Toussaint

What can I say? Every trip to Asheville, I make it a point to stop in @ Rendezvous for a traditional French meal. Michel runs a tight ship and is regularly seen on site visiting with guests. The wine list, cocktails, and digestifs will whet your appetite. The daily specials will tempt your adventurous side. And the standard French fare will satisfy your need for proper French comfort food. If you stop in on Wednesdays (check their calendar), you can play a round of Petanque if you are the competitive sporting type. Whatever the season, give Rendezvous a try. Bon Appétit!

We showed up for our reservation and they didn't have a record of it, yet they apologized greatly. We sat outside, enjoyed a drink and then after a bit of a wait, we were seated. The staff was attentive and we had wonderful service. We both enjoyed the mussels and pomme frites. They were flavorful, hot and delicious. The pomme frites were too. Even though we were full, we split the chocolate mousse. It was amazing. Despite the rocky start, we had a beautiful evening and will definitely be back.

Google
Clearly the best food and great value in the area! Food was delicious and reasonably priced. Very nice decor and atmosphere inside.

So exciting to get to enjoy our favorite French food from downtown Asheville just outside of town in a lovely setting with ample parking! The French onion soup is divine. The small side room was loud, but service was good as always.

Google
10/10 in all categories. The food was absolutely excellent. The drink special was off the charts. The creme brûlée? Recipe from 1691, we haven’t tried it yet but if it’s anything like the food prior it’s going to be the best we ever had. Do yourself a favor and savor a truly excellent culinary experience here at Rendezvous.

Google
Amazing experience for a larger group reservation, from start to finish! Darrell was wonderful to work with in planning a birthday celebration and was so kind to take time in making this a special occasion for us all. Excellent service, food, ambiance and overall experience - like always. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
I had dinner at Rendezvous last night and it was a wonderful experience - a real treat. I'm from Canada and have lived in France, and I found the menu reflected French cuisine well. Our meals were delicious and beautifully presented. Serving sizes were ample without being "too much", do not worry that you will get tiny servings here. Though know that in French dining it is more about flavors and the experience, than a plate overflowing with more mediocre food than you need. I will absolutely go back and enthusiastically recommend this french restaurant to anyone who asks.

Google
Very cozy restaurant with sectioned off seating that makes you feel very comfortable. The food was incredible, service was on point and it easily one of the best meals I’ve had in the last year. You won’t regret coming here!

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! The staff are professionals, food and beverages are excellent, and treat you like family! Our food was taking longer than it was supposed to and we appreciated that the staff was honest with us. Then they go above and treated us to dessert saying that they truly care about their customers!!

Yelp
Second visit was just as good as the first. This was a Wednesday night for all-you-can-eat mussels in four broths. I was full after the first large bowl and, fortunately, you can order half bowls in the same or different flavors. I found that I only need one full order and can return any night of the week. Service was awesome and the dining room quiet and romantic. The outdoor patio was also busy.

Yelp
Another year another visit to my favorite French Restaurant. Once again the service and food were fantastique. Weather was nice and we sat outside with our dog and enjoyed watching the games of pétanque being played.

Yelp
There were 7 in our party tonight, and everyone agreed our meals & service were outstanding! Two of us ordered escargot, and it was so good. Served topped with puff pastry instead of in shell, picture attached. Delicious. My steak au poivre' was amazing! Picture shown. My daughter had the fresh trout almondine and said it was best she ever had. We had more than one server throughout the evening, and all were very professional, pleasant and efficient. Excellent service. I highly recommend Rendezvous.

Yelp
Not only the food is great but excellent service. I love the different areas where you can seat The ambience is wonderful. The food is amazing

Yelp
Cordon Bleu was absolutely delicious. Appetizer with beets and apple salad is a must try. Service was excellent and very knowledgeable. Restaurant felt comfortable and inviting.

Yelp
Our friends have been dying for us to try Rendezvous, so when we visited Asheville, we made sure to meet there for dinner. Rendezvous, known for its French comfort food, is owned by Michel Baudouin who grew up near Lyon, France. It is interesting because this location used to be a church and they have Pétanque courts. I had never heard of Petanque but when we visited, they had a large group of people playing. I read up on the game later and learned that it is similar to bocce ball, but in Petanque, you toss the ball rather than bowl it. Our friends said the owner of the restaurant will give lessons on how to play if you are interested. I would love to take a lesson someday. They have inside and outside dining. If you sit outside, you can watch people play Petanque. In the fall and winter, plastic is put up, and they have heaters, so on a cold evening, you can still dine outside. They also have a take-out option. For an appetizer, our friends suggested the French Fries, so we shared a basket. They were sprinkled with Herbes de Provence and served with red pepper aioli. They were incredible!! In fact, I could have sat down and eaten the whole basket!! For my entree, I ordered the Poulet Cordon Bleu Bouchon which is a breaded chicken breast rolled around prosciutto and Gruyere cheese. It was served with Pommes Frites and sauteed fresh veggies. It was absolutely delicious!! The desserts looked amazing, but we were all so full that we decided to pass.

Yelp
The food is great! Cute interior, very nice and attentive staff. Loved the meal from salad to entree to dessert and the house rosé is very good! Definitely recommend! One of Asheville's hidden gems!

Yelp
Delicious food, wonderful service (even got to meet the owner), and so many seating options! My husband had the steak special- it was so tasty and a perfect sized portion- wonderful asparagus, mushrooms, mashed potatoes with an incredible sauce! I had the quiche - it was delightful with a tasty salad and the fries - wow! After dinner we headed outside for a wonderful game of Pétanque! We probably botched the rules but it was sure fun! The whole evening was spectacular! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Terrific meal and the ambiance was amazing! Our server was great and the service was excellent! Will definitely be back!

Maureen G.

Yelp
Yes, yes, yes!! Oui oui!!! The food! The service! The ambiance! The French music! I felt like I was in France!! The wine was exceptionally delicious as well, and a good selection! Out back they were playing a French version of bocce ball; how cool is that!!! Inside was the very picture of a bed-and-breakfast in Bordeaux France.

Yelp
It is very rare to have food of such flavor and harmony. This dinner was so reminiscent of meals I've enjoyed in France, in Leon, in Aix en Provence... The chef and owner is Lyonnais, well trained and knows exactly what he's doing. The staff is also very much with their attention to detail, but also make the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable. My friend took me here, unexpected by me, and I was very, very pleasantly surprised. The sauces were wonderful. The crème brûlée was classic. Every bite was as good as the first. and that's the test. I don't want to tell you too much about it because I don't want this place to get too crowded! Ha! To find such a gem at the base of a little side, road was totally unexpected. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays they have never ending moules . There's also a pétanque court in the yard. It's a definite place to go back to for fun and delicious food.

Yelp
Great food and wine, the duck was excellent, wait staff was friendly and prompt. Reasonable prices.

Yelp
I love French food, and especially French country food, so maybe my expectations of this place were set too high. Don't get me wrong, it was quite good, with a warm and cozy French country atmosphere (maybe just a little too dark though). The service was excellent. The food was good, but not 5 star great. We had the duck breast and the mushroom tartine. The duck breast was cooked well -- nice and crispy outside, but still moist and tender inside. The mushroom tartine was a good vegetarian option, with a nice sauce and flavor, but not something I'd go out of my way to recommend or order again. The french fries -- which are supposed to be the best in Asheville, along with those of their sister restaurant, Bouchon, downtown -- also didn't quite live up to expectations. I've known two French restaurants that define truly marvelous french fries, and compared to those two, these were a let down. A good recommendation if you want French country food in the Asheville area (East Asheville in this case), but not a destination restaurant at the 5 star level.

Yelp
Delicious French cuisine tucked in Haw Creek. Patio is lovely and even has 4 x bocce ball courts.

Yelp
Came here for the thanksgiving prefixed dinner. $65 per person for 3 courses. Food was delicious, especially the Beef Tournedos and La Banane Bourée (like a hot banana spring roll with a light caramel drizzle). The chocolate pie was a little bit too sweet for my taste. My main complaint about the place was that the food was already pre-prepared so by the time the food was served, some of it was cold which put a damper on the experience. Also the waitress was pretty rapid fire about serving the courses immediately one after another. Was done with the meal in a little over an hour but would have liked to have more time between courses to digest.

Clay M.

Yelp
My family and I ate here the night before Thanksgiving while spending a few days in Asheville. Everything was excellent. Our waiter, a young man whose name I sadly cannot remember, was delightful. He was friendly, answered questions, and made suggestions. The service was impeccable. The food was excellent across the board. My wife, who lived in France, found the food authentic and tasty. My daughters, two of whom can be picky eaters, found plenty to eat and enjoyed their meals. There was a great selection of entrees from which to choose. Highly recommended.

Yelp
One of the best meals we've had in a long time! Steak au Poivre and chicken cordon blu had incredible flavor, steak so so tender. Can't remember the last time vegetables tasted so good! With the mussels they didn't bring bread which I thought was odd. We asked for bread but it wasn't too fresh or tasty for sourdough. Also the service got pretty slow towards the end of the meal because they got busy. Ambiance beautiful, will definitely go back

Yelp
Great food and even better desserts! Ample amount of seating and outdoor space. Service was great. This would be a fun place to come after dark on a warm night.

Yelp
The best steak ever and serve with a fabulous assortment of fresh grilled vegetables! Best value in Ashville for a top rate quantity food.!
google avatar

Joe E.

Yelp
All you can eat mussels are my fave and my wife loves the salmon! Outdoor seating is a plus!
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing meal! We were a party of four, ordering several different selections, starting with escargot. It was perfectly prepared and delicious! We also had steak poivre, salmon, and chicken cordon bleu, along with pomme frites, served with French mayonaise, yummy! We finished our meal with creme brulee. Everything was delicious, service was great. There were no complaints from any of us. We will certainly return!

Wendy S.

Yelp
Didn't have a reservation but arrived before the dinner rush. This place was recommended to us by some locals. Our waitress explained some menu items & took time to talk to us. Food was good & save room for dessert. Nice place to try something different.
google avatar

Britt J. R.

Yelp
Thanksgiving dinner was a prefix menu which had several choices for each course. It was excellent. The food was consistently good in the service was also good. Can't wait to go back to try the regular menu. The cocktails are also fabulous. Dessert topped everything off.

Yelp
Came here a few weeks ago and couldn't shake the experience. My husband and I came for our anniversary Darrell was our server, she had no clue what she was doing. Our food was cold, but it took so long for our server to come back to the table we decided not to complain. We will not be coming back.

Pierre H.

Yelp
We have dined several Thursday evenings when steak tartar was on the menu. On our most recent visit Feb. 29, the tartar was brown rather than fresh red in color, indicating that it had not been freshly made. It was far too spicy, which drowned out the flavor of the beef. It was especially disappointing because, on previous occasions, we have very much enjoyed this dish. (The fries, however, were delicious, and the best in Asheville.)
google avatar

Bryan K.

Yelp
Quaint little French place in Haw Creek. Sat at the bar and Tabitha (who bartends every night they are open) is very friendly and attentive despite being slammed the night I was there. The French Cab was fruit forward and lovely. Get the steak and frites.
google avatar

Carlos N.

Yelp
Extremely American - nothing French about the food here. Very salty - inedible. Overpriced.
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
Rendezvous is now a "go to" spot for us to enjoy. The dishes are prepared thoughtfully and beautifully. The mussels are a must have and then we decide from there but have never had something that we didn't love. The wine and drink menu is interesting. The ambiance is pleasant, friendly, and laid back. Our service has always been exceptional. I really can't express enough how much we have enjoyed dining here since we discovered it!

Charles I.

Yelp
Great service and food, with outdoor and indoor tables. A nice country French feel to the place. It seems like a mainly locals crowd.
google avatar

Jackie D.

Yelp
Amazing service. Beautiful restaurant in E. Asheville. Great food perfect for a celebration dinner.
google avatar

Jen D.

Yelp
Hubby and I had never been before but our Bocce League was meeting there to play a tournament (they have several Pétanque courts). All of the food looked amazing and the creme brûlée was fantastic, crunchy, carmelized sugar top was perfect. A friend had the beet salad, lobster ravioli, and pomme frites. The ravioli was in enough sauce to dip the fries - would have been great served with bread. They had several outdoor tables and we didn't venture inside so not sure about spacing and seating. They do require a mask to go inside.

Malinda G.

Yelp
There was a mixup with our reservation and my nephew added a chair to the table, which was completely out of the way. They were not accommodating to us at all and in fact pretty pissy about it. It seemed really unnecessary to be so abrasive.

Kym M.

Yelp
My husband and I have fallen in love with the vegetables at this restaurant. We can feast on the garden veggies and be fulfilled. We tried their special that had a black eyed pea vegetable with cornbread and the horrible Amberjack fish that seemed spoiled as the flavor was not good. I could not get over the veggie and cornbread side as we wanted to return the following day just for the side dishes. I gave them a 5 despite the awful fish because the sides were perfect. The service the second visit seemed to be off put by my distaste for the fish and wine as if she was offended. When we got there we told her it was my birthday but she never offered a dessert menu or anything. All in all, this review is based on two visits versus one wherein the first visit and the consistent amazing veggies outweighed any bad. Steamed Mussels Steak Au Poivre
google avatar

Kelsey J.

Yelp
Had heard great things about Rendezvous and finally got to go! Everything from the food to the service was amazing. We were seated in the bar area which didn't bother us-still had a nice ambiance but the main dining room looked beautiful! My parents are wonderful home cooks so it's hard to please them but they both agreed this was the best meal they have had out in a long time. Can't wait to go back!

K H.

Yelp
Rude and inconsiderate. It was not full and we were told our reservation had been entered for 3 instead of 6 and there was no room for us. There was plenty of room, even for one added chair at the end of the table. We had brought my 85 YO mother for dinner as my father's funeral is tomorrow. Not the evening we hoped for. I will never be back.
google avatar

Nora F.

Yelp
Authentic as it comes!! You can't go wrong with the poulet roti or the steak frites- or the lobster ravioli, or the mussels, or the.. heck everything is delish. Having grown up in the same small French village that the owner did, this restaurant fulfills my french cravings. While we usually show up a little late for our reservation, the hostess can be a little much. Please don't scold us when entering your business!
google avatar

Xue W.

Yelp
Came here for date night with my wife. First let me start with staff. The hostess was super friendly and accommodated us with the perfect table for the night. We ordered their mussel frites (steamed mussels ) Parisienne style to start, skipped on the frites (fries). It was good but not great. Something was missing in the taste with the sauce and if I rated based on that starter dish I'd probably give it a three, as it was a little bland. I had the steak frites and my wife had the chicken cordon bleu. Both of these dishes were 5 out of 5. Their steam veggies were delicious, the steak was perfectly cooked how I asked, pomme frites were just right and perfectly crispy, and chicken was moist and Very tasty. To drink we had their version of a Moscow mule which was very good as long as you like sweet drinks. She had their rose which was excellent. Moved on the a glass of Sauvignon blanc and a Bordeaux, both which I would order again. Ambiance we cozy and perfect for a cold night. They also had the added touch of a live piano player which made this a successful date night overall. Would definitely recommend and come here again. Almost forgot to add, waiter was excellent too. Friendly , quick , and easily available for anything we needed.

Janet Z.

Yelp
Sister restaurant to Bouchon. Located short way from downtown, in Haw Creek area, it has abundant parking, wonderful service, and best of all -- takes reservations (unlike Bouchon). The atmosphere is quiet and intimate with a similar menu (if not the same) to Bouchon. The chef is wonderful. The music on weekends is wonderful. The decor is wonderful. What's not to like? It's perfect. Our new favorite place. Try it.

Alice M.

Yelp
So glad we have two authentic French restaurants in Asheville. Inside we enjoy the booths that are partitioned and almost like private dining. In spring/summer/fall, we enjoy dining outdoors on heated patio--almost like being in France with pétanque and Thursday night French music. Don't miss special winter menus right now!
google avatar

Kathleen D.

Yelp
We went for the Valentines Day special. The food was amazing, as always. Our server, Asia, was attentive but not intrusive. This is hands-down, our favorite place to go!
google avatar

Bill K.

Yelp
Dined here on Friday, 7/8/22, for the second time. My wife ordered duck, and while the meat was good, the rest of her dinner was substandard. A pile of tasteless steamed vegetables and roasted potatoes. Presentation to pile all the food together on the plate. Apparently a popular style, but very unappetizing. I ordered salmon. The fish was overdone and it was accompanied by a similar pile of steamed vegetables. I asked our server to replace the roasted potatoes with French fries. Of course I got the roasted potatoes too which our server seemed to be amused by. Altogether an underwhelming dinner.

Yelp
One night in Asheville and decided on a local recommendation to try the yet un-reviewed sister property. Unfortunately it's not ready for prime time yet. We have not dined at the main location but were told that the menu was identical and since reviews are so strong at the main Bouchon restaurant we decided to try. Called and found a 8:30 PM spot on Friday. It is located at an "old church" we were told. Lol. Yes it's a former church but it's not old and basically a late model home that used to be a small church. Inside were boring white walls and new furniture. If you visit you will feel uninspired and meh with the decor. It may be due to it only being open a week so hopefully they will invest some time later to adding to the current bland interior. Of course the main attraction is the food. On that front, our choices were also bland and forgettable. French bread is expected to be very good. Ours was chewy and had no crust. The salad was ok but again nothing memorable. My French onion soup had very little flavor, was a little cool, and not enough cheese. Not the worst but certainly simply mediocre. We chose the steak and frites since we were waiting for the amazing pommes frites and brought our own red wine bottle to pair. I had the au poivre version and my wife had the regular version without sauce. You can see from pictures both had bland and water-logged mixed vegetables. Our steaks had little flavor but were cooked perfectly. The biggest fail were the pommes frites. They came with a strange mayo-based dipping sauce which was not mayonnaise and as such, did not add to the herb-heavy flavor of the seasoning. They tasted nothing like traditional fries and I'm not sure what all the hype is unless the main restaurant's version are much better. We tried two desserts which were probably the highlight of the evening. Cheesecake and the chocolate crepes. They tasted wonderful and seemed home made. Overall it may be growing pains or it may be the new chef however the five star reviews of the original location are far away from what we experienced from it's sister restaurant Rendezvous. A few other tidbits. Service was good. Not great but solid. There seems to be plenty of parking although we took an Uber. Our final take is that they have to develop a personality and some ambience and hopefully improve the quality of the food. Being this is the first review of the restaurant and it has only been open for a week I don't think it's fair to criticize them too much however, there's lots of areas to improve.

Susan W.

Yelp
Disappointing!! We decided to try Thursday night because we love Bouchon Steak tartar was vile, soupy vinegar soaked slop. Followed by"Chopped" sweetbeads covered with undressed salad. Sad to say,we wont return

Lynette F.

Yelp
Great service and delicious food! Easy parking in the lot. Outdoor dining is available as well.

Yelp
Excellent Dining experience all around - soooo happy they opened another "Bouchon" outside of downtown. Parking, parking, parking - no more driving around downtown looking for a space - love it!! They also take reservations, so if your thinking ahead, not need to wait in line for a table. New renovations look great - the dining area is cozy with plenty of room for a private conversation. Menu is identical to Bouchon - and its terrific, top to bottom. Our server, Tara, was great, very attentive without the "hover" you sometimes get with new waitstaff . Her Mussels were excellent and my Steak Au Poivre was prepared with perfection. House wine list is an excellent value, they also have other upscale options available. Locals rejoice!!! Great alternative to downtown - we will be back - many, many times!!!

Gale F.

Yelp
It was lovely. We both got the steak au poivre and it was delish. Our waitress was delightful and right on time. The pommes frites could have been hotter, but overall a wonderful culinary experience and we'll be back.

Yelp
Went with family of four to celebrate a birthday. Genuine French cuisine: we rated all four selections 8 or 9 on 10. Service was excellent even on a busy Saturday night. COVID-era booths add to intimate atmosphere and provided welcome sound proofing. Prices reasonable by AVL standards. This was our second visit and we'll be back for more!
