Renkon-Ya

Amazing food and authentic experience. Tiny restaurant with the chef and a server. We sat on the floor and watched her cook! The food came out fresh from her gas stove top. Very dish was wonderful. Don’t miss the renkon, eggplant, and lightly fried tofu.

The restaurant serves traditional Japanese cuisine with a lot of vegan and vegetarian options, all marked with a symbol on the menu (available in English). The food is prepared almost in front of you with the kitchen in the middle of the (small) restaurant. Cozy atmosphere and quick service.

Food is good, server is kind. The atmosphere is great. But pricey, portion of food is pretty small. Wish to have set meal like 3 dishes with rice maybe? Without price, everything was good. :)

We had a great time at Renkonya. We randomly entered this place to have a snack and were extremely happy with our choice. The restaurant is authentic and offer different seating (at the bar, table or on the ground). We tried different snacks and everything was tasty. Price were decent. Good sake. Menu is in English and it’s pretty easy to order.

must visit in kyoto—best dinner we had here by far! impeccable food and atmosphere, no wait time, and clear vegan options. our favorites were the fried tofu, ginkgo nuts, and kelp onigiri but everything we tried was delicious

Calling all veggies/ vegans/ vegetable lovers in Kyoto, this izakaya had thr most delicious veggie food of our whole trip. We couldn't book a table online so tried walk in, but when we got there there were some reservations so might be worth visiting and asking. We got seated very quickly, it's a tiny place. We ordered the black beans (10/10l), Cucumber (the miso dip is incredible) aubergine, rice balls (seaweed and one meat for my meat eating husband) renkon (lotus root, so yummy) and the star of the show the deep fried tofu. This was the best tofu of my life, as a 10 year veggie. We ordered another round! So worth a visit!

Such a beautiful experience here last night. The food is clearly labelled as “vegetable only” “vegetable with butter” or “vegetable with egg” so it was really easily to get vegan options. The recommended sake was delicious and the food was great. We loved the chilled tofu. Owner and all staff were lovely and the Izakaya style was authentic.

True 5 star meal. The atmosphere is quiet, respectful, and traditional, but comfortable The service was quick and helpful, with our starter dishes coming within ten minutes of ordering. The food quality was very high and some of the best we had in Japan for vegetarian/vegan food. We ordered almost every vegetable on the menu. The diversity in textures, flavors, and experience was great. The food was also consistently delicious. Go here instead of any of the spots in Kyoto you've heard of!
