"Renner’s is a neighborhood institution dating back to 1939, offering a robust menu of burgers, sandwiches, and hot dogs alongside ice cold beers and Spanish coffees. Best of all, furry friends of the canine variety are more than welcome — the no-frills watering hole proudly serves a “pup grub” menu with dog-friendly dishes like the Pit Bowl, a medley of chicken, beef, and hot dog, and the Turner and Hooch, which consists of a milk bone biscuit for your dog and a well shot for you." - Janey Wong

The fries were super soggy, there was no crunch at all. The tater tots were crispy but unseasoned and the burgers were super soggy as well and made my stomach hurt. The waitress Lindsay was super nice though.

Google
Very good food at reasonable prices. I enjoyed the soup of the day. Friendly staff. Great outdoor area. Order inside at bar before sitting outside. Entrance to place is a bit of a challenge, steep slope.

David Howe

Google
super down to earth, small but quaint little dive bar that's approaching their 100 year anniversary.

jim siemens

Google
Hipster bar posing as a dive bar. No cheap beer on tap, only microbrews. Food was very small portions and not particularly good for a dive bar. Service was very slow, took nearly half an hour to get simple food once ordered.

Google
Have not been here after the remodel. Great food. There is an off menu. On the off menu, which has a double hamburger with 2 grilled cheese sandwiches as buns. Huge beast. The waitresses said it's their most popular to go item. Today I had a salad,,,,,and onion rings.

Google
waited at the bar to order for a long time then the person working said "BOOMERS ONLY". we left because we were not born in the correct time period. Nice atmosphere.

Google
Not sure about these other reviews. Just happened upon this place. Really good prices, and the bartender Karissa was very welcoming. Wish I lived closer!

Google
Fly menu is such an amazing deal. $6 for solid chicken sandwiches links, fish or burger options. Why are you reading this and not going there now?

Chris W.

Yelp
Short and sweet - this place has really tasty, good quality food, at an unbelievably reasonable price. Friendly service and a laid back atmosphere make this a must-do. I can't wait to come back and try one of their much ballyhooed burgers.

Paul B.

Yelp
I have been going into renners for years. I was pleased so see that they made it through covid. I want in for a rare weekday lunch and when I entered the were a full size sheepdog sitting at the bar. Not on the floor at the owners feet but on a barstool. Mind you not someone's pocket dog in a bag but a 50 pound sheep dog. ON A BARSTOOL! I understand that people have gone overboard with the "support" animals. But this is not acceptable for the bartender to allow. This should not be okay in a restaurant. Apparently heath codes are not a concern for the staff.

Fiona K.

Yelp
Great cozy bar in Multnomah Village! The inside was so much cuter than expected for a "dive", and our drinks were nice and strong. What bumped this up to 5 stars - their $5 fly menu burger. Exactly what I want when I'm tipsy and just want a cheap, greasy snack. Definitely planning on being back!

Jeanne F.

Yelp
The gentleman in a baseball cap manning the bar on Saturday, 8/19 when I stepped in around 11:15a to order three drinks and four burgers was likely the most rude, (probably) racist and anti-family server I I have come across. It was a busy time at the bar for sure, and we had put our orders in and waited for about 45 minutes before inquiring around canceling the food order as we closed our tab. His response when I'd politely & apologetically let him know that we had to close out due to our babies' nap schedule: 'that's why we don't allow babies in the bar. Adults have a schedule too and need to nap' and snickered at me and my black girlfriend. I replied that it was my first time at the establishment and he made it abundantly clear we and our families were not welcome at the bar, tipped well on our drinks, and lefty. Needless to say, we don't be coming back.

Kiley S.

Yelp
Unpretentious and cool local spot, friendly staff, and some incredible, greasy, filling bites. The Fly Menu rules, and for $5 a pop on each item--you just can't beat it

Yolanda R.

Yelp
Great bar restaurant with a lively clientele and a friendly bartender, too!! Had the fish and chips with shoestring fries, three pieces of fish and a very tasty coleslaw. My daughter had a pull pork sandwich that she enjoyed, too. Will definitely be back and interested in their Wednesday bingo, too.

Liz P.

Yelp
Came out to get a fly swine = burger + pulled pork. It was not on the menu. The menu says "ask about missing items". I ask the bartender "do you no longer have the pulled pork burger" she says "yes it's under Sammies." I try to explain I don't want a sandwich, I want a burger with pulled pork on top. She argues that it's the same thing. So I order a pulled pork Sammie. It is just pulled pork on a ciabatta with coleslaw..... not what I asked for. To clarify... a pulled pork burger.... is a plain burger with a bun and pulled pork on top! So we had one drink each, a burger and sandwich... $53 with tip $63.... For dive bar food.... I remember having food and a few drinks for $30 with tip not too long ago! I get inflation, but at least improve your offerings if you are going to charge more. Get more creative with the recipes.

Jeffrey D.

Yelp
I love this neighborhood dive-y bar. The low ceilings and small footprint lend itself to a speakeasy feel that's very welcoming.

Eric B.

Yelp
I took my Son here for Lunch last Friday. We ordered inside and sat in one of the outdoor areas, with water all around, and direct table service with a smile. My choice was a Bacon Bleu burger with fries a red ale. David chose a pulled pork sandwich and a mixed drink. Both sandwiches were really good and apparently too much food for the Kid, as he took a to-go box home. The whole Multnomah Village looks different under COVID with all the extra outdoor dining areas. So maybe I wouldn't have given Renner's any attention in the "old days". What I discovered this time is that the inside of the Renner's has a great neighborhood pub/dive bar (with food) feel that my Milwaukee born mother instilled a great love. I'm not sure that this kind of place is up Gayle's alley, but I'm sure I'll be back with or without her. And if she calls looking for me, I'm sure the Renner's barkeep will tell her that I'm not there. :)

Tripp W.

Yelp
This is the quintessential dive bar in all the best ways! It's dark...comfy...great staff, and the food is really good! Stopped in Sunday for a burger and I had one of the tastiest mushroom swiss burgers I've ever had! The beef was super juicy and flavorful, the bun actually holds everything together, and the house-cut fries were just about perfect. My friend had a Coney Island dog and tots and he loved it. Also the (cheap) bloody marys are some of my faves in PDX. So glad Renner's rose from the ashes and is once again welcoming folks back!

Jason V.

Yelp
My wife and I grabbed a drink here while waiting for our table at Casa Vacca across the street, as we were both charmed by its cozy aesthetic, both inside and out. It's a dive, but a home-y one, with a seemingly fun crowd, decent prices, and friendly bartenders. We weren't here long enough to give an in-depth assessment, but we enjoyed our time here, and will likely stop in again, on our next visit to the Multnomah Village area!

Cindy V.

Yelp
Wait service poor and horrible communication led to the wrong order of food below standard. Price paid for food inconsistent with posted menu. We won't be back. Didn't meet dive bar standards.

Aaron L.

Yelp
Great service. Good drinks. I enjoy coming here minus the growling pit bull at the bar. Every time. I brought my girlfriend in here the other day and had to leave after she was growled at. We are a huge fan of dogs (have two) but won't be back.

Alison C.

Yelp
Renner's has so much character and has remained a favorite bar of mine from my 20's, 30's, and gulp now 40's. Order the chips and (homemade) salsa.

Laure D A.

Yelp
We started out going to Fat City. The lines were very long and menu was high. So we ended up across the street at Renners Grill. Great service. The coffee is worth the wait . The breakfast menu was killer. The food was even better!!! I had the French Toastanado. It was amazing. Mu friend had the Chichen fryed Pork. It also was amazing. The price was even better. Great atmosphere.

Sylvan S.

Yelp
Pleasant time Nice vibe. Tasty beers. Nice selection of other libations. Food is fresh, crispy and wonderful. Ordered the jalapeño burger and it was terrific. Really like the bar design. Two nice bar stations. Combine that with neighborhood / historic groove makes it a winner for all times.

Darren K.

Yelp
Lol, I asked for the club to be cut in 1/4's This actually made me laugh. I am going to try and eat it but sheesh.

Heather P.

Yelp
This is BALLS to the WALL! They had a complimentary sanitizing station, outdoor seating. Fruity Friday fruit special. Veggie Burgers. Amazing tots. Ask for Leslie's margarita special, made with fresh squeezed limes. I love this Art Deco dive bar with personality, local history, local owners, and all of the rights (LBGT/Fem/POC) you can imagine. A gem of SW Portland, only minutes from Downtown. Plenty of neighborhood parking. Key words: Shops, late night, art, local, burgers, veggie burger, wings, hot dogs, dive.

ROB R.

Yelp
Came in on a Thursday afternoon, 2-ish, maybe half dozen peeps, not busy for sure, took 5+ minutes just to get a menu - ordered drinks (3), hot dogs (3), 25 minutes later, food showed up. Waitress forgot our potato salad, finally came half way thru eating. Really? No apology, just a surly glare. What happened to this place? Wanted a bratwurst but took it off the menu - just a plain dog that tasted like rubber. Never again.....

Lisa L.

Yelp
We arrived, ordered our drinks and food (burgers). The drinks came but after an hour of drinking and listening to unpleasant hard rock, still no food! The place wasn't busy and people weren't eating. We ended up paying our bill and leaving. We won't be back. Too bad..

Stephanie S.

Yelp
After living so close in Multnomah Village, I finally decided to check out Renner's and I was pleasantly surprised with my meal! We ordered a Po Boy Sandwich and a Bacon Bleu Burger with an egg! At first I was skeptical about ordering a Po Boy with it being late at night and I'm always concerned about the freshness of seafood, but I loved the deep fried oysters in this sandwich! (UPDATE: I did get food poisoning after ordering this. I would ask about the freshness of this before ordering ) The bread it was on was good but I wish there was more sauce since it was a bit dry, and the sauce was really tasty! The burger was also a bit overdone but the other ingredients really brought all the flavors together. Also just a side note, the server at the time was not properly wearing her facemask (not over her nose) which is always concerning whenever going out anywhere, especially during these times. Just something I would strongly recommend enforcing among your staff!

Cindy I.

Yelp
End up getting food here by accident as everything was too busy so searched what else was near by. Picked up food so can't comment on the location. We got burgers and as they list Ore-Ida tater tots. Well we were surprised and pleased that the burgers were very good, juicy and flavorful, and nice crispy tots. So happy they saved our night!. We would recommend trying their burgers

Joanna S.

Yelp
Bar tender was mad cool. Gave us extra beer and made fun of my friend hahahaha she deserved it

Matt B.

Yelp
Probably the best Spanish coffee I've ever had, it was on point. Danny was absolutely awsm and the food was outstanding A++++. Copious amounts of compliments to chef Gage! Renners is where its @!!!

Hailey R.

Yelp
5 star dive bar indeed. Renners has been through the mill these past few years. A fire shot them down for over a year, and as soon as they reopened, COVID hit. Then as soon as restaurants were allowed to reopen, BAM, quarantine again. I am not saying these safety measures are not imperative to defeating the virus... But we all need to make sure this doesn't defeat our local stronghold establishments as well. Renners Grill serves the most delicious place of chicken and waffles, and my boyfriend is partial to the scramble/hash for breakfast. The burgers are ridiculously good! If you are like me and are addicted to pickles, I always ask for extra pickles and they may come out and prank you by bringing you a whole cup full of pickles haha. The staff is caring and loving to those who return that respect. If you come in a couple times then you are accepted as a regular and now this is your home. It is a mark of how beloved this establishment is by the neighborhood that they all pitched in and volunteered time to help clean up after the fire. Renners is an institution in SW Portland. Delicious food, and during normal times cheap good drinks and fun atmosphere. 5 STAR all the way. Support local!

Sidney M.

Yelp
Foods great and the bar tenders rule! All of the burger are deeelish! The hot dogs too and they're dog friendly. Got a whole dog menu!

Chad T.

Yelp
Good food. Very slow! Poor bartender was all alone and working his butt off. Tough job market.

Jonathon H.

Yelp
I went here for quick food only. No time to drink. And I sat outside. The food was dive bar heaven in the best way. Imagine dive bar food at dive bar prices made by a cook who cares and buys quality ingredients. I had the fly fish and the fly link. Both were excellent and actually phenomenal for the price. Now I need to go back, actually go inside, and buy some drinks. My new spot on the rotation for quality cheap lunch...

Dustin M.

Yelp
Love this place, real local dive bar gem with great food. Love the staff and the vibe!

Aknole M.

Yelp
It smelled where we were sitting like the mats needed cleaned, gal was friendly so was the owner- but we were one and done.

Les B.

Yelp
The boys went here after a day at the driving range and we got a picnic table outside. We had a great time. The food was good, the beer was cold, and the waitress was phenomenal. The food service timing was a little awkward and they were out of wings, but we can't complain too much. This area seems good for bar hopping. This spot should definitely be on your list if you're out and about.

Adrienne C.

Yelp
Renner's is OPEN!!!! Best burgers and fries ever!!! Support an important old spot in Multnomah Village at the stop sign!! We miss happy hour here but come pick up dinner and support them!!

Anthony R.

Yelp
Been coming here for a while now, can't get enough of the burgers! Always fully satisfied at this place, and great customer service!

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
I've been to Renner's twice and really enjoyed the meal I had there. I'm also grateful they serve coffee as I quit drinking last January so I didn't know if they'd have many non alcoholic beverages available, but lo and behold they had brewed some coffee and kept refilling my cup. I love the ambiance of this place, and the staff are friendly. I had a bowl of the best clam chowder I've had here in Portland ( no seriously, it's delicious) and also got some fish tacos that were good. I look forward to going back!

Lisa H.

Yelp
Food made here - not frozen pre-fab, preservative laden grossness. I appreciate it! Thank you, Renner's, for taking customer service, food and drink seriously. I've been here many times at various times of day. Morning breakfast is killer on the weekend when I don't feel up to cooking and their portions are huge! You may want to share a meal. I've also met friends to catch a Blazer game and have a burger. My most recent late lunch was a peanut butter bacon burger with jalapeño cole slaw. I love their cold slaw! I skip cole slaw at other places because it's limp cabbage slime... Ugh. Here it's crisp, slightly spicy and fresh. Yum! Peanut butter bacon burger is everything you think it is. HH great drinks for your $. Servers are always kind and I enjoy going back each time.

Linus S.

Yelp
As great as ever. Where good friends meet. And make bank at keno. I recommend the Coors light, mountains are always blue

Amelia K.

Yelp
Staff was awesome and I had the best Spanish coffee everrrr!! Food was amazing and the whole vibe is perfect for a mellow Saturday morning. Great little hidden gem. Super happy I found this place! Highly recommend!

Randal F.

Yelp
As a lifetime local I've been in Renners several times over 4.5 decades. It's always been a dive, greasy food and dirty conditions in most of those visits. Their fire was caused by greasy filth in the kitchen. Newest owners have cleaned it up some, but they still have greasy food and inconsistent service. I know people who like their food, etc., but I'll never understand why. I assume their cook staff changes a lot as their food is REALLY bad at times. In a city that has so many great restaurants, the people who rate Renners food with 5 stars are definitely out of the loop, too lazy to go somewhere else, or just too buzzed to be a good judge. I used to agree to meet friends there, but no more. Almost any place is better... bottom of the barrel IMO, as usual.

Joel D.

Yelp
Quaint little neighborhood dive bar. The place looks well worn, but loved by the regulars. Stopped in for breakfast at 7:30 AM, there were about a dozen or so other patrons scattered around. Most were drinking and seemed to know everyone else. So a friendly place to meet and plan your day or your mischief. I had their Easy Caprese breakfast, while the presentation wouldn't pass muster on any of the shows and there were some minor flaws - it was quite good and flavorsome. The base was a slightly sweet biscuit topped with large whole basil leaves, sliced tomatoes slices of fresh mozzarella cheese and a sunny side up egg (the edges were a bit to crisp) and all of this was drizzled with a nice balsamic vinegar. Although the coffee was plentiful, it was a bit on the clear side. The service was great, friendly and helpful!

Tracy W.

Yelp
We are in the time of "get it and go" so we called ahead +1 (503) 246-9097 and ordered. 15 minutes later we had a House Burger with tots and a Mushroom Swiss Burger with fries. The burgers were huge, fresh medium-cooked burgers with fresh condiments. Good sized portions of the sides completed the meal. In a word, delicious!

Katrina R.

Yelp
Great food, strong drinks, and friendly service! What more could.you ask for in a neighborhood bar?

Marley A.

Yelp
The food was mostly terrible and the bloody mary mediocre. The service was slightly better than the food and drink. I keep going back a few times a year because I miss the Renners of my youth.

Ruth F.

Yelp
Wanted to support a small local company so we ordered burgers from Renner's Grill. I'm sorry to say they were nothing special. My burger was under done it had white cheese instead of American cheese and was not very flavorful. With the french fries did not look like they were and cut as stated. Positive point we requested no onions on one and they got that right and there's dipping sauce they said was OMG amazing. I would order a bottle of the dipping sauce alone.

Peter T.

Yelp
I am cluttered with cliches today. Adrift with adages. Swimming with saws. Proffering proverbs. Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs! (Yes, that makes no sense, I know). Renner's Grill, in the Multnomah Village neighborhood of Portland, is a place "where everybody knows your name," and "chief cook and bottle washer" Marshall, proprietor, makes sure of that, introducing himself, his posse of co-workers, to you, and in turn, you to all his regular old-timers. What makes a place like Renners feel like "home?" When you know it's a place of refuge, where you can relax, enjoy friendly banter, the beverage of your choice and here's the important part - you get to do this among people you will quickly come to regard as "family"no matter who you are, where you come from, your lifestyle choice, your size, your shape, your skin color, religion, political beliefs, or any other category that makes you feel either invisible at one place, or makes you wish you were sometimes; at Renner's, you're just "one of the gang", and you're welcome. Renner's has recently opened for the lunch rush, and has daily food (and beverage) specials, inexpensive, "mean cuisine on the scene", quality food. Altho Mrs. BDB and I have popped in before, I waddled in yesterday because Marshall put up a new sign outside that he is now serving genuine Vienna Beef "Chicago style" hot dogs. Do you know how rare that is in Portland? I know you do. Renner's got 'em, the dogs that made Chicago famous. Vienna Beef uses the finest cuts and secrets seasonings to make a plump, juicy, skinless dog, served on a poppy seed bun (do you know how hard THOSE are to find here?), and if you take it loaded up "Chicago style", you'll enjoy it with the customary toppings of mustard, chopped onion, the 'real deal' neon green relish, pickle spear, tomato wedges, and celery salt! Or any of a tumult of toppings, your choice. Me? I went for that bountiful beef biggie w/ only raw onion, and yellow mustard. I wanted to "relish" the purity of the beef dog, and the oh so deliciouso softness of the poppy seed bun on its own. Man, I'm drooling for one right now, what time do they open? I added a side of fries, only a buck, and got a pile o hot, salty crisp shoestrings, far beyond my expectation for bar fries. Amidst bar flies. (ok, groan). Renner's is at 7819 SW Capitol in Portland, open 7 days.

Danny M.

Yelp
This has been my local dive bar for the past 13 years. Great food and good service. It feels like home. Certainly a five-star-dive-bar.

Mikhail H.

Yelp
I try to be good and cook good food - well, food that is good for me and such. And then that day comes - or late night when you stare at your fridge. You star at all that good for you food and just no... Getting it out, putting it together and making something happen on the stove just a whole lot of nope. Or, you might need to eat your feelings. I won't judge you... This particular day I was just spent and needed to carb load since I effectively dug a trench in my backyard so I was pretty done with standing (or having feeling in one of my arms for that matter). Renners just recently got added to my Ubereats and I just wanted a pile of carbs that would carry me through. I also was all sorts of indecisive so I ordered a bunch and nibbled for two days which was perfect and so good! A burger (respectable just simple burger with the fixins). Their chicken strip basket - again, just simple fried food that was done well, not horribly expensive and good fries! Another confession - I went there because they have mini corn dogs because those little nuggets of fried meaty dough are the ultimate couch snack while you took through Netflix. So I was in a happy fat coma. One of the best things was that, yes, I was ordering a smorgasbord of tragedy BUT that does not mean I want to dive into grease. Their food was crisp and good. I have ordered from other places before and received a horrific to go container I could pour grease out of....ewww. This was not that! And, did I mention that my order was correct?!?

ChadLisa S.

Yelp
I am gonna have to give this place a second chance. We went there during a street fair. They had Karaoke outside which was cool, but the tracks, selection and sound system were really subpar. The some of the waitstaff were friendly but bewildered. Other guest bartending waitstaff that day were just really obnoxious. The one server told us that she was a ""celebrity guest bartender"" that night. I guess she felt so self important that it trumps my wedding ring and starts aggressively attempting to flirt with my husband. Not cool. Not nice. This is the mark of a troubled person of low character. Owners should take note of this behavior as this is a major turn off to quality patrons. Another weird thing is that we tried to order food about 10P. They did they stereotypical Portland thing and hinted but didn't outright explain that after a certain hour they can serve food and they have full menu but nobody really does. They said "We just have it listed because it is law that you have to serve food with adult beverages after a certain hour." But they took our order anyway?!?!? Huh!?!? But then they conveniently ran out of what we wanted to order and then totally lost our bill. How about telling the patron "the kitchen is closed," or "the cook is not here and I can't take your order?!?!?" I will prob drop by again and check this place out in a few years. Not anytime soon. Major fail. Sad. At least the drinks were cheap. If this place was cool as my other reviewing friends suggested, we might have become regular patrons.

Paul H.

Yelp
It's a Sunday morning at 9am and two of the customary brunch places in Multnomah Village have huge lines already, so I decided that I'd give Renners a try for breakfast. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming with vinyl booths, brick facad interior walls to give the space a warm feel. Becca at the coumter greeted me and told m to sit anywhere I would like....easy choice....they had English Preimere League soccer on the big screen TV. I choose a booth in easy viewing distance. Close enough to the counter hear that this place has local regulars who know and love it here. Becca seemed to know them all. Wasn't sure what to order another first, then I remembered what I'd come in here for. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with two eggs. Becca warned me it would be a big portion, and I could order a half if I wanted. Of course, I took the challenge of the whole order. The two biscuits were huge. The "redeye" gravy was delicious. So I missed out on being crammed into a counter and waiting an hour at the other places and had an enjoyable leisurely breakfast at Renners. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying out the rest of the breakfast items and this hidden gem in the village.

Gaby C.

Yelp
Local spot for a good quick bite to eat. These were the best burgers we could have asked for! Great service l!

Summer M.

Yelp
I'm glad Renner's is my sister's favorite neighborhood dive because she insisted on sharing the glory with us- now it's MY favorite dive in Multnomah Village, too. It's a dim and cozy dive bar with awesome bartenders, drinks strong enough to give my cheeks the insta-drunk flush, and some seriously amazing food! My Farmhouse Burger- with patty, ham, bacon, fried egg, gruyere cheese and fixins- was absolutely delicious and their in-house "fry sauce" was so good I put it on everything. Plus they took the Jello shot concept one step further and serve pudding shots- yes you read that right. Go to Renner's and get one right now! Other than the overhead music being a little too loud and a little too smooth jazz, Renner's was a complete 5 star experience. Sum's tips: make liberal use of their fry sauce if you order food, and be sure to Yelp check-in for a free Jello shot.
