U Kalendu - Review - Vyšehrad - Prague - The Infatuation

"During the communist days, U Kalendu would open at six in the morning, when blue collar workers would have a morning pick-me-up in the form of a pint of beer. As one does. Or at least, as one did. The days of questionably pounding a few morning pints before operating heavy machinery are long gone and now this quasi-subterranean tavern, located on the banks of the Vltava River, is a spruced-up, smart place with new wooden floors, dark wood walls, and sturdy oak tables. The kitchen is inspired by British chef Fergus Henderson ofSt. Johnin London, an early advocate of snout-to-tail dining. Hence, the menu is a Mitteleuropa meat-a-palooza with roasted duck hearts and stomachs, grilled pig snout, sweatbreads, pan-roasted veal kidney, and grilled veal liver. It’s not all pork byproducts and baby cow guts, though. The beef tartare is one of the best versions in the city and the guinea fowl stuffed with roasted vegetables goes well with the unfiltered Pilsner Urquell on tap." - David Farley

Amazing place to have a dinner. We’ve made a reservation in advance, but needed to wait about 10 minutes before getting to the table, which though didn’t bother us. The place seems to be popular and there are definitely reasons for it. When we arrived many tables were taken and people seemed to quite enjoy. The food was great. As far as I get, they are trying to update their menu once a month. Anyways, it seems most of the dishes just repeat on regular basis. Nevertheless they are great. We’ve ordered 3 starters per two persons, two main courses and some potatoes. Starters have been served quite fast. But when it comes to main courses, we’ve been waiting for maybe half an hour. The place is quite pricy though. We’ve spend 2500 crowns for two for the dinner.

We ordered one menu as a special offer, where you can choose any appetizer, main course and there was one choice of desert. On top of that we had another main dish. I would say it was just enough quantity of food for two people. The dishes are seasonal, the menu was just for this month. The combination of the flavours in the dishes was very interesting and creative, perhaps for lovers of more fancy gastronomy. The quality of the food was great. The restaurant had also nice design, however, the tables were too close to each other, and we could hear everyone else talking. As for the service, the waiters were friendly. What struck me however was the way beer was served. They brought a glass filled half with foam. This is something that can not happen in a restaurant like this, neither the bar nor the waiter should have given a customer such beer.

This place is definitely worth visiting! Our lunch started with perfectly draught beer followed by great tartar steak served on toast bread topped with narrow bone. All main dishes were tasty as well, I especially enjoyed my slow braised veal with spruce sauce. Service and atmosphere good as well 👍

This place deserves a shout out! Came here for lunch and it’s packed, and for good reasons. The food is absolutely delightful, and I believe to be Czech food with a hint of modern flair. I love that their creativity is modest and works so well. The beef tartare and smoked eel are devine. Chicken kyviv is simple but well-executed. My favourite is the sweet dumplings and I wish I could have it another time. Also, the bread is great! Quality of the service matches the food. The only thing that I would have liked is for the food to come out sooner, because the 3 course meal took 2.5 hours.

We had a fantastic meal yesterday night. They have their own bakery next door and in fact their bread and focaccia is so good. The moment you step in you realise that this is a proper restaurant to cater for local people but also tourists like ourselves that were lucky enough to find it. We had duck hearts, beef tartare, rabbit leg and quail, finishing with a nice raspberry sorbet. We will definitely be back

I loved this place. They have very attentive and fast service. It's a little crowded and noisy but overall it has a good atmosphere. Great food for a very reasonable price together with a great pilsner... I absolutely loved their tartar and the other starter with straciatella cheese. Lamb belly was average, pork tongue was good. Desserts were very good. But tbh it's hard to drink beer after this much of food :) Update: Kiev chicken is amazing, it's my favourite dish in this place now

The food and service were excellent — especially the chicken schnitzel, which was outstanding. However, the restaurant isn’t very vegetarian or pescatarian friendly. The biggest downside was the terrible acoustics; it was so loud that we could hardly hear each other talk.
