My first visit at Restaurant Prinsen was such a great experience! We had dinner with friends and really enjoyed the warm, classic atmosphere. The decor feels elegant and timeless, and the service was excellent – friendly and attentive. The menu offers traditional Swedish cuisine. It’s a bit on the expensive side, but absolutely worth it for the quality and experience. I especially loved my fresh salad with shrimp, pumpkin, and mustard dressing – so flavorful and well-balanced. We had several tasty drinks with the food, and ended the evening with a delicious pavlova. A perfect spot for a relaxed, upscale dinner in the heart of Stockholm. Can’t wait to go back! 🥰

We had a lovely dinner here. The service was very friendly, and the space has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The complimentary bread was delicious!! I ordered the Swedish meatballs and thought they were fantastic — I’d absolutely recommend trying them. I also had the beef ribeye (Biff Rydberg), which was just okay. It looked nicely cooked on the outside, but I didn’t realize it would be very rare in the center — something to keep in mind if that’s not your preference. Overall, I’d definitely recommend Prinsen if you’re looking for traditional Swedish cuisine in a nice ambience with high-quality food.

Google
Chill and relaxed vibe with a friendly service. We went for the outdoor seating with a nice view of the street. Sound levels where quite low and the street where calm at 9pm, easy to converse. The tables outside are fairly small so it’s difficult to sit next to each other if you are two large people. Svenska smaker for starter and the duck breast as the main course did not disappoint.

Dining at Prinsen for the second year in a row was just as memorable as the first. From the elegant interiors to the gracious staff, we felt genuinely welcomed — starting with champagne and continuing downstairs in our own private space. The food was beautifully prepared, full of flavour, and the evening as a whole felt effortless. A truly special night.

Very traditional classy decoration inside 🍞 bread - a bit hard 🥩 meatball - nice and juicy coming with well seasoning gravy that is not too salty. Mashed is soo cremy! 🐠 tuna is perfect cook with great pairing sauces

One of the best restaurants in Stockholm! The Best Swedish meat balls. And the service is always great! We’ve been here 5 times during our stay in Sweden. Love it!

Google
We had a great dinner at Prinsen during our first visit to Stockholm! Very busy on a Saturday night so recommend reserving in advance. The change over of tables was so quick and impressive! I tried herring for the first time and absolutely loved it! The starter - Sillbricka with five different kinds was a perfect way to try it. My husband’s Toast Skagen was great too. The Seafood Wallenbergare was new for me too and an unexpected texture but delicious and full of flavour. My husband enjoyed the meatballs. Nearly too full for dessert but wanted to try the Swedish cheesecake to round off the night of new foods! Different to cheesecake I’ve had in the past as it’s made with cottage cheese & almonds - really delicious with blackberries, toasted almonds and ice cream. Service of the food was a little slow but understandable on a busy night with the staff working very hard. The short break between courses was welcome and we really enjoyed the atmosphere and our dinner overall!

This was a delicious place to have dinner at. The staff was very attentive and friendly. The food combinations played and served were phenomenal. I was with a group of 7 for dinner and we all loved this place. The fish dishes with the sauces were very well done. The buttered toast with the shrimp was so good I could have ate that all night long. The sorbet was freshly made as well.

Yelp
Prinsen is a local Swedish restaurant in downtown Stockholm. It opens at 1pm. I got there at 1:05 and it was already 3/4 full. Nice friendly Swedish atmosphere with superb service. I had the crispy artichokes and the veal patty with lingonberries. Great food! I also had a delicious Swedish beer - amber colored and delicious. I'd definitely recommend Prinsen for a great local meal.

Yelp
Delicious, just the right amount of fancy, and affordable. Those Swedish meatballs were omg, to die for. On the salty side. The bread tower and butter were also amazing. Very nice staff.

Yelp
Was looking for the best Swedish Meatballs and Prinsen was suggested. Was. Not. Wrong. First tip, make a reservation. Even if any app you have says it's "not busy". It most certainly was busy. We were at least told there would be space in about an hour, so just walked around a while and came back. It was worth the hour wait. 3 out of 4 of us had the aforementioned Meatballs and we all were so satisfied. The other non-meatball lover had a mushroom dumpling, which was also pretty tasty. Our waiter was fantastic and absolutely delightful. They certainly don't rush you at all here. If I am ever in Stockholm again, I will come back to Prinsen on the double!

Yelp
I experienced maybe racism or microaggression while having dinner at the Prinsen on December 28, 2024. I am still confused about this experience. I am a brown woman and noted that I am a tourist and requested to order in English or be given a few minutes to use google translate to order. The waiter (an older male) gave me a very dirty look, did not take my order and complained about having to speak English. Thankfully, the people that I was dining with could speak Swedish and ordered for me for the rest of the evening. As we were finishing up the first course the same waiter came to me again and said something in Swedish and picked up my plate while I was eating before I could even say anything. He also referred to others I was dining with as monsieur/madame but did not even address me. This was very unexpected and unpleasant and made me wonder if I would get the same treatment if I was not a woman of color.

Yelp
My friend told me to go here if I wanted a traditional Swedish dinner in a nice environment. It ended up being exactly just that. I absolutely loved my meatballs, and really liked what my friend ordered as well (in my photos), as well as the wine pairings the servers recommended. I feel like it was a bit pricey in my opinion, but it's also Scandinavia so it's sort of expected. The servers themselves weren't the most friendly or outgoing, but they still took good care of us. I left the place still feeling like I wanted maybe one more small appetizer or something, since I was still slightly hungry, but I didn't end up doing it. There are many traditional Swedish offerings like this around Stockholm but this is certainly a solid place to try.

Yelp
A Stockholm institution. Very sophisticated clubby vibe with white-aproned waiters providing authentic and amazing Swedish Cuisine, No wonder it's been a success since 1897. Its worth it and never feels old or tired. definitely a fave for Stockholm
google avatar

Yelp
We tried swedish meatballs (not usually my thing but when in sweden!) and they were actually good! The bread & butter was amazing! Great wine list. Also love the outdoor ambiance.

Yelp
A friend recommended I go for the best wallenbergare in town... and I did. I ordered the fixed lunch as below, toast skagen which was excellent, wallenbergare and a chocolate truffle which I never received lol. Also had a thimble size glass of champagne for 180k. I would skip any wine or bubbly here and stick to beer. I want to give the place 5 stars but the missed truffle and the outrageous bubbly will only allow 4 stars, but I would definitely recommend the quality classic food here. Sat outside and the view was great.

Yelp
Prinsen was my favorite restaurant we tried in Stockholm for traditional Swedish food. The meatballs were very tender and flavorful, the beef was perfectly cooked and paired well with the onions and potatoes, and the scallops were light and the perfect starter. I appreciated the complimentary rolls. Service was great, and we dined outdoors with a great view. Prices were overall reasonable for a nice meal.

Tom G.

Yelp
The young big guy waiter is not nice. He seems a little bit racist. Letting customer waiting for 15 minutes without water after seated. I have seen bad reviews for him but still not feel good experiencing first hand.

Yelp
We gave this restaurant a try when we visited Stockholm. Food was good, a bit salty. Had to ask for my steak to be prepared without any salt and it tasted just right. Service was excellent. Overall, good food and I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Excellent meal at Prinsen for myself and my family of five. I had the Biff Rydberg as did my younger son. My wife had the Prinsen Grona, which we knew from an aunt's Swedish cooking at home in Minnesota. Sort of a potato dumpling with meat (or in this case mushrooms) inside. My older son had the salmon cake, and my daughter had Swedish meatballs. The biff rydberg was excellent, but be sure ask the waiter for instructions on how to mix the food and the sauce they provide. Coupled with a solid bottle of Sancerre. Very good customer service and an excellent dinner out.

Yelp
If you're reading this, chances are you're American. Go here. Get the Swedish meatballs. And realize that what you've been eating at IKEA is simply inferior. If the weather is good, sit outside, people watch.
google avatar

Ron L.

Yelp
Foreigners coming to Stockholm always gravitate to those things that they know about Sweden - the fish, meatballs, and Abba. I knew what I was getting in to, being this place was in the business district. I just wasn't expecting prices that would make the warrior on my American Express card break into a sweat on a cold wet winter evening. Good wine by the glass, the bread display is impressive, and the ambiance is quite rustic.

Yelp
The locals highly recommended this spot and it did not disappoint! Great service from the maitre d' to the wait staff. The food was exceptional and the food presentation was stunning!

Yelp
Great authentic Swedish restaurant. White tablecloth fine dining with steak, Swedish meatballs, fried potatoes, and more. Well prepared, unique, and flavorful food. Great outdoor seating, sidewalk cafe style, although we sat inside. Interior decor is a classic steakhouse wood paneling, lamps, and portraits all over the walls. Classic waiter style with good service, and a tiny bit upity up place. Extremely enjoyable and upscale area of Stockholm.

Yelp
Came here for a quick lunch yesterday; the idea was toast skagens, desert / cheese, glass of wine then off to finish the shopping. So nice. Haven't been here since late '90s...it hasn't really changed at all; used to be one of the favourite places...but of course it isn't cheap

Yelp
This place was recommended by the White Guide (Sweden's equivalent of Zagat) for their authentic Swedish food. Overall a great place to try some traditional Swedish food. Food: 4/5 STARTER: selection of herrings - if you like herring (like the Dutch), you will enjoy this. It came pickled and also with a salad. I personally do not like herring, but my Dutch counterpart found it to be very tasty. FYI - the starters are TINY MAIN: meatballs with lingon berries - this was very tasty and a significant upgrade from those IKEA meatballs. they were small and flavorful, the sauce was not overly salty and went very well with the meatballs. the mashed potatoes were perfectly smooth and creamy. DESSERT: creme brulee - this was a very good classically done creme brulee. nothing super special but done well Service: 2/5 The service in Sweden is terrible (and I've spent a fair amount of time in Europe already). The waitstaff is downright rude to you whenever you ask for anything or even order. On the contrast, the coat staff was very nice and even offered sight-seeing recommendations. Atmosphere: 5/5 You can feel the history in the building. It used to be a beer hall and it has a very rustic and cosy feeling to it. The clientele was dressed very nicely and it had a very nice buzz to it. Great place to take someone who needs to be impressed. Value: 3/5 It came out to about 300kr/person. The Main portions were quite big and filling. It isn't somewhere that I would go all the time but it is a great place to try good Swedish food.

Yelp
My wife and I shared two entrees. Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes, pickled cucumbers, and lingenberry sauce. The second dish was seared arctic char with mushroom topping and cauliflower puree. Both entrees were prepared perfectly and were very delectable. For the first time in Sweden we had meals that were not overly salted. This chef got it right. The food portions were reasonable as were the prices. The ambience is old world with warm colors, dark paneling, and leather seats and benches which is not surprising since the restaurant is about 125 years old. Although service was slow to start it improved over time. This is a Saturday night and the restaurant is completely booked. It is always advisable to make a reservation in advance. Considering how crowded it is tonight, the noise level is not bad which is probably due to the fact that no music is playing in the background. This place is a real winner and worthy of a return visit.

Yelp
We brought a toddler here for an early dinner to avoid the dinner rush on a Friday night. The restaurant was pretty empty at the time we came. From the start, we knew our waitress was not a fan of ours. Maybe it's cuz we were tourists? Maybe cuz we had a toddler? Whatever it was, the service was very tepid at best. I did very much enjoy my meatballs on the other hand. The food was delicious! I remember the bread and butter being very tasty as well. This place was recommended by our friends who live locally.

Yelp
One of the best experiences of our two week swing through Scandinavia. Our reservation was handled professionally, and we were well attended by a captain and our waiter, Tony. But for their efforts, I would not know to seek out Bjorn Borg underwear. We selected two bottles, a Gruner Veltliner and a Gigondas, and both hit the spot. I started with the Taste of Sweden appetizer. While delicious this may not be your best option if you've been enjoying hotel buffet breakfasts with similar fish offerings, The Vasterbottom cheese added something new for me, and the generous portion allowed tastes. Others in our group enjoyed the asparagus soup with quali egg. The loin of lamb was very tender, and even the fat was delicious. It was accompanied by a nice portion of potato gratin (which could have been crisper). The pan fried perch won good reviews, as did the meatballs. There was a vegetarian dish for the non-meater in our group, and I believe she enjoyed it. Go. Dress for dinner.Ask for Tony.

Yelp
Prinsen is my favorite spot for a business lunch in Stockholm: outstanding service, very good food, and a great atmosphere. I wandered into Prinsen having never heard of it and quickly knew I had found my kind of restaurant. The decoration is classic without being dated, the formal waiters are pleasantly familiar once you've established your relationship. Starters: veal carpaccio is very well prepared, shrimp spread and scallops are typically excellent Swedish seafood Entrees: the perfect arctic char - good portion size with lots of vegetables; meatballs here are a classic for a reason Dessert: Crème brulle is crisp and done just right, a feat during the lunchtime rush Drinks: All of them? The old fashioned and negroni here are great and worth the price Favorite indoor seating is the wallpapered booth on the back wall.

Yelp
A memorable dinner : everything was delicious and nicely served. I had the shrimp toast, the meatballs and the raspberry pavlova. I are every last morsel or all 3 plates. The ambiance is friendly and cozy. All staff are very well dressed and excellent service m. Highly recommend it

Yelp
Desperate for lunch at 3pm on a Sunday, our choices were limited, more so by the desire to keep to a Swedish theme. We debated about trying our luck here and went in with a sinking feeling. The tablecloths and faded waitstaff with faded white jackets further compounded our sense of foreboding. However, when it came, the food was much better than anticipated. My calves liver with bacon and mashed potatoes was one of the best I've eaten, and our grilled octopus starter was fantastic. However, it was overpriced and the menu was so much less imaginative than other places. Price aside, this would have been four stars in a city with fewer choices.
google avatar

Yelp
Stuck in time back in the 50s with basic 'husmanskost' food for outrageous prices. Guests likely a combination of business diners expensing their meals and clueless tourists. At least it is quite lively and the location cannot get much more central than this.
google avatar

Cameron M.

Yelp
A very enjoyable restaurant in Stockholm. We were specifically sent to try the Köttbullar (meatballs) so we didn't venture into the other delicious sounding menu options, but after this experience we certainly will return. The waitstaff was very welcoming to us and so friendly. I noticed that half of the diners were dressed up and the other half very casual, so come as you are. The stacked bread was quirky but good. The meatballs were really as good as people had suggested. Perfect portion, flavorful gravy, and wonderfully seasoned meatballs. Yum!

Yelp
Traditional Swedish food, mainly a lunch place. Filled with lawyers and finance people at lunch time. Pretty ok!

Yelp
So. 12 hours aboard the Dreamliner is quite nice except Norwegian Air charges you for a every little thing and $4 for a cup of Lipton is a blasphemy. Upon arrival, I walked and walked and walked until I stumbled upon this great Swedish-French restaurant with fantastic old-school (attentive) waiters and delicious hearty food. Traditional shrimp toast was divine; I'm never ever having that horrendous Ikea version again... Main course consisted of three simple European staples: juicy beef, onions and fried potatoes (pictured). I managed to devour an extremely tasty desert (rhubarb + mascarpone n sorbet) and barely had any strength left to walk back to the hotel. Oh, don't stuff yourself on bread. Fantastic meal in a fantastic city.

Yelp
Just had a very good lunch in Prinsen. I wanted a Swedish lunch, so my two Swedish guests suggested WALLENBERGARE ORIGINAL, it was very good, very moist veal, lovely flavor. My companions ordered the grilled Char and the pan fried Seabass. They both seemed very happy with their lunches. Nice coffee rounded off a fine lunch. Excellent service. Nice old fashioned interior, comfortable, also a good outside area for alfresco eating.
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
Delightful dining. The menu had lots of great choices - I had the rib eye with a very tasty creamy mustard mousse and diced roasted potatoes - excellent. And John had no complaints about the lamb. There's a perfect mix of casual and elegant, and fun window shopping in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Prinsen restaurant is centrally located, a couple of blocks from the main train station, in posh Ostermalm district (e.g. one block from a Louis Vuitton store). It has a nice traditional upscale bistro/brasserie decor, with old polished dark wood and white cloth (no red-and-white plastic checker here!). Nice relaxed quiet atmosphere indoor (at least on a Sunday evening). Service was truly excellent. They went out of their way to accommodate all our requests. Wine and bread were good (not excellent). We had the equivalent of the "shrimp cocktail" appetizer, which includes a small mountain of tiny shrimps that you have to un-shell yourself, with a really nice saffron aioli dip, and (overly) buttery toasts. Overall, very good if you don't mind the required handwork. And generous portion: this is great to share. Then we had the "seafood burger", which was more of a light breaded fish cake. As long as you don't care that it's not a burger, this was actually a nice dish. It was supposed to be served with spinach but they brought boiled potatoes instead (don't know why), which were good. We also tried a side of French fries, and they were truly excellent. Overall, a solid address. I would happily go back. It wasn't cheap, but what is in Stockholm?

Yelp
Beautiful old-timey restaurant with a classic Swedish menu. Perfect for a casual or formal business lunch. Downstairs bar works well as a after-work drinks spot.

Yelp
The best Swedish quisine in town. Over 100 years old experience and very profesional staff who knows what they are talking about. It is like coming to a family dinner as you being greeted by the gentleman at the entrance who is extremely sympathetic. No dish becomes a disappointment here. If you have a guest in Stockholm or wash your palate which a matching wine, this is your address.

Yelp
Wonderful ambiance, service , and food! The cod here was fantastic , so was the wine, and last but not lease, the dessert was decadent .

Yelp
POSH OESTERMALM People watching cafe, with sidewalk seating off Stureplan exit from Oestermalm subway. Great 4-star restaurant combines aesthetic physical site, high value. Add great wines and Swedish menu.

Yelp
The perfect Swedish cuisine! Very tasty. Swedish meatballs were our favorite. Excellent service. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Unfriendly staff and bland, overpriced food. My friend and I were looking forward to dining at this restaurant because of the great reviews from our hotel concierge and other Yelp reviews. We were unimpressed with the quality of the food and the staff was not very warm or welcoming. I will not recommend this place to friends or family who are visiting Stockholm.

Yelp
Prinsen is an institution, the place you have to visit sometime in your life, very proffesional staff and great atmosphere

Ambita C.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere. Warm friendly and welcoming. Casual yet oozing old world charm. Efficient staff. Fabulous food. I had the bleak roe on toast for a starter and a main of Beef served with caramelised onions, a mustard mousse fried potatoes and an egg yolk. You toss the yolk into the Hot potatoes and let them cook. Voila! The best beef dish EVER! Dessert was a classic Creme Brûlée. Overall, a fantastic meal. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I've made a reservation online for a table for four. The next day I visit the restaurant to look inside the restaurant. I saw they have tables in the cellar. I told them that I made a reservation and that I didn't want to have a table in the cellar. That wasn't a problem they ensured me. Last Saturday we went to the restaurant. At the door no one ask to take your jackets. After asking they do in an unfriendly manner. When entering we were not greeted or welcomed at all. A very unfriendly waiter with a gray beard directed us directly to the cellar. After informing him that I especially requested a table NOT in the cellar. He treated me very arrogant- I could take it or leave it. No excuses or any alternative was offered. Even my wife my treated in a manner that was not only impolite but also in a rude way of communicating. This was a very bad experience for the four of us. We all have been dining in hundreds of restaurant around the globe. Sure, not all where perfect, but Prinsen is one of the worse expenses we ever had. I would like to nominate this gray bearded waiter for the 2018 award for being the most arrogant and rude one ever encountered in Sweden.

Yelp
Went here for kräftskiva two summers ago and it was a great time. I love a place where the waiter will tell you, "wine? no you must have beer and schnapps."

JJ M.

Yelp
Food: fresh and flavorful. Staff: fussy and arrogant. On a very warm evening, and even though we had a reservation, our group of 8 was seated way back in the interior of the restaurant. No A/C. We asked to be moved outside because of the heat. The reply we got from the waiter was, "It's hot everywhere." Not too helpful. Finally we moved outside where the light breeze made for a very comfortable environment. But, we are obviously not locals and we were treated as such, with contempt. This is supposedly a high class place. We've been to some very great restaurants and this place is not even in the universe of great restaurants. It's too bad the service was not as good as the food. But the snippy, snooty staff overshadowed what pleasure we got from the fresh, well-prepared food. Unless you're one of the well-known local business folk, AVOID.

Yelp
VEGETARIANS AND PEOPLE WITH FOOD ALLERGIES BEWARE!! I was here for my younger sisters birthday, it was her day so she wanted to come here. Everyone else ordered off the set menu but when I asked for a vegetarian option and tried to tell the waitress about my food allergies, I got told off, she was very rude and told me the chef hates people like me, hates vegetarians, people with dietary restrictions and doesn't let people special order, no matter the reason, she said she would ask, but whatever he came up with would be what I got. When I tried to object (on account of food intolerance) she said he would yell at her if I didn't take what he had offered. I got some food (pasta) and at the time I was just discovering how allergic I was and just wasn't confident or knowledgeable enough to refuse food I am allergic or intolerant to so I ate it anyway, making me quite sick for some time afterwards. The food was not only an unpleasant experience from a personal health angle, but it was so overpoweringly salty, there was no way it could have been an accident, it was as if the chef was punishing me with an entire package of salt for not living my life according to his standard. I was scared to complain after being yelled at and feeling very unwelcome so I simply didn't finish and have told everyone I know what a horrible place this is and if this is how they treat guests (remember, it's not as if I walked in alone demanding they make me something special, I was in a larger company, with a table booking and everyone else had something off the set menu), then no one should dine here, no matter what they are able to eat, with or without allergies, vegetarians or meat eaters alike. I walk past here all the time and it is a constant reminder of how badly I was treated on what was supposed to be a nice night out with my family. Being told that someone hates you for something out of your control is a horrible experience and it still makes me feel sad and vulnerable every time I walk by.

Mary G.

Yelp
Fun place, nice atmosphere. Great Swedish food. The meatballs and veal dish were great. The waiter was very helpful. Had a great time.

Sam S.

Yelp
Really good food and wine. We both had the meatballs which were fantastic. The wine selection was large but fairly expensive. Overall this place was more lively and buzzing than i expected and not stuffy. I would certainly return.

Eric L.

Yelp
One of the really good restaurants in Stockholm. We had the beef and it literally melted in our mouth. The creme brulee was one of the best I ever had.
