We chose to stay at Hoog Holten due to its proximity to the nearby Canadian War Cemetery - the largest in the Netherlands. The hotel, restaurant and surrounding property exude charm at every glance, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We booked a room with breakfast and dinner included - recommended as the property is outside the town and there are no dining options within walking distance. Our ground-floor room was large and comfortable with a small private patio, as well as bath robes and in-room coffee. That said, there are some weird omissions and quirks to what one would normally expect - no slippers, no water or wine glasses, no HVAC to control the heat and cooling, and a very annoying automatic switch that lights the bathroom like a movie set every time you open the door. The three-course, included dinner in the (Michelin Mentioned) restaurant was outstanding on both nights of our stay. The only negative was a lack of variety in the vegetables as we were served the same celeriac twice and nothing green either night. However, the ambiance and service in the dining room, at the bar, and from the front desk were friendly and efficient. The breakfast buffet was a bit of a disappointment due to a lack of fresh fruit beyond the usual cut up cantaloupe and pineapple, and no made-to-order options - just a steam tray of clumpy scrambled eggs. However, there was a full range of breads, cereals and cold cuts to get your day started. While there is room for improvement, Hoog Holten is an excellent option should you be seeking a getaway in the Dutch countryside.
