The Best North African Restaurants in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"A good meal is in the cards at this Plateau resto, which has been uniting the flavours of Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco for 35 years. Chef Nouredine Kara personally selects the ingredients to be used each day, and the result shows in flavourful and fresh food on a couscous-centric menu with merguez, kafta, and other meats." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

At first, nobody came to welcome us at the door for a good 20-30 minutes. The owner was nice and took his time to explain the menu. We didn’t have the best experience with the royal coucous. The merguez and lamb wasn’t too flavourful. We recommend trying the soup and beef briks.

Tasty couscous and friendly service in a fine-dining like resto. The only thing I did’t like was the hot spice in the food, it was too much for me. If you’re the same don’t think of trying their harissa 🔥(friendly advice). Else I recommend this place, enjoy!

I am so glad we chose this restaurant for a relaxing family lunch. The owner Noureddine was kind and welcoming. We enjoyed a large, filling meal with cucumber & tomato salad, assorted olives, pastilla au poule, vegetable soup, lamb tagine, kofta meatballs, couscous, chicken over rice, and then topped it off with tea, coffee & dates. Wow! Each dish was better than the last. All the meat was tender, the vegetables were fresh & well-cooked, and everything was seasoned perfectly. The environment is warm and relaxed. I wish we lived in the area so we could come again and again.

Great discovery in plateau Montreal. I recommend the royal degustation menu . The owner is charming and the portions are huge. The flavors are out of this world. A great place for sharing with friends bring your own wine. A 5 stars!

Google
I haven’t tried a lot of Moroccan/Algerian restaurants in Montreal, but this one is really one of the places I will definitely come back to. The cook was so nice that he offered me a free salad to start my meal. I tried their veal Tajin and it melts in your mouth. It was so good. Atmosphere is warm and inviting with some Moroccan/Algerian songs playing in the background. The menu is in French only but it wasn’t that hard to order from

We were a group and had the Lamb Tagine and the Chicken Tagine. The food was plentiful and delicious. The staff were attentive but didn't hover and were all delightful. Will definitely go back!

Yelp

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. I left sated and happy. The service was excellent and attentive. We had two Tagines and were given plenty of extras by Chef Nouredine. The lamb was falling off the bone tender. I really enjoyed the sauce of the duck tagine. Come and split a Tagine between two people. Don't over eat the amazingly laminated, and flavorful bread before you get your main! Save room for dessert and tea. Thanks and I'll be back for more!!!

Yelp
Although Fall is upon us, or because evenings are getting colder, we were in the mood to eat at this restaurant, known as the perfect place for tajine. Tajine or couscous with some vegetables and of course harissa would warm up anyone! While my friend went for a veal couscous, I had the chicken and lemon tajine. The slow-cooked stew with chicken and vegetables was so savoury that I would have eaten another one. But as you can see in the enclosed picture, the dish was already very copious. In addition, the waiter was quick to offer us more vegetables and couscous. Unlike so many places, the service is one of the trademark of this small restaurant. Should you go there, please say hello on my behalf to the owner Mr. Noureddine.

Yelp
This place was amazing! In Montreal for a business trip, we decided to go with a recommendation from a coworker. Each of us ordered a meal however the plates are big enough to share!

One word... Amazing! The food is authentic home cooking. The Chef was very accommodating and recommended fantastic dishes.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to be staying around the corner from this little gem on an evening when all of the bistros in the area were packed. Charming ambience. The gentlemen waiting on us were gracious, helpful and unobtrusive. Everything we ate was delicious from the brik to the couscous dish with lamb, prunes and raisins. I'm pretty sure the baklava is the best I've ever eaten. Highly recommend for a quiet, delicious meal in a charming setting.

Yelp
I feel bad even telling you about this place. It's always that way with a place you don't want ruined by crowds. But they deserve the business. This is the fluffiest perfect couscous in Montreal. Meat falls off the bone, service is fast but not too fast and there are no loud anglo tourists here. At least not that I've run into. Not that I would mind that of course, my Torontonian friends. Just please watch the volume, it's rude. A menu that's simple and direct, and a cuisine that's rich. This is not the best Algerian / Moroccan food in the world, only the most reliably best that I've found in Montreal. It's like Etoile de Tunis (on Belanger) but more affordable and reliably good. The owner is a lovely chubby gay Algerian guy, the kind who gives extra merguez and extra dessert to his regulars. I have never had a disappointing item here. My recommendation is the couscous Royale - chicken, leg of lamb, merguez and the couscous and vegetables, for under $20 per. The resto is BYOW, and tucked on a residential corner, making it yet more perfect. The mint tea afterwards is not overly sweet, nor is the desert - the owner relies a bit more on texture than on honey to make his ma'amoul and baklava work. In terms of price, it's a step more expensive than 'Au coin bedouin' on Duluth & St Laurent, but imho it's very worth the extra $10. The decor is plain-cozy, with glass-topped tables, plain pictures and chairs, and pleasantly not-too-dim lighting I take business suppers here, and dates and friends. Au Tarot works for all of it. Reservations are necessary on a Thursday / weekend during the main grazing hours. They also deliver. Note there is a delivery outlet on Rosemont. Note that if you order the delivery it is excellent but the couscous will not be as perfect (and honestly how could it be?). I have never had a friend complain about this place. I am sorry for the unabashed rave - this is my top pick in town and my first review on Yelp.

Yelp
It was my first time trying out the moroccan food, and everything was delicious! Especially, Chicken Tagine were very soft and had a nice scent of lemon. With couscous, it was a perfect combo! But we ordered a bit too much and it was over priced. Make sure you only order 1 platter for 2.

Iggy P.

Yelp
Food was good but the owner ripped me off. My dinner for one person ended up being $95 !!!! It was not that good!

Charlotte G.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious, this is the first time I had Moroccan food in Montreal and it was truly amazing. We were three people and shared a chicken tajine (highly recommend!) and vegetable couscous. The plates are good for sharing, and we even ended up having too much. Owner was very sweet and lovely to talk to as well

Heather C.

Yelp
We had got dinner to go twice while staying in the neighborhood and loved it. The couscous aux legumes was a delicious vegetarian option. On top of that the owner threw in a spinach dish with sauce that I can only describe as magic. For our next order he packed us a box of things we ordered as well as things we did not - including a tureen of that magic sauce which we put on everything. He is so generous and friendly!

Yelp
In the center of quebecs food capital. I'm shocked it's still open after all there years. I went once because I lived 1 block away. I still live one block away. I never went back.

Yelp
We were looking for Moroccan food in Montreal and found this on Trip Advisor. The food was as good as my Mother in law used to cook. We started with the artichoke and hearts of palm salad which was so fresh and tasteful. Casserole d'escargot was prepared to perfection. Harira soup was so proficiently spiced with a great consistency. The tajine of chicken with lemon and olives was delicious. The couscous was so light and airy The couscous royal has packed with lamb chops, chicken, lamb shank, and merguez which was exceptional. To full to finish it all, but finished dinner with mint tea. This is definitely the best Moroccan food I have eaten since my mother in law passed.

Benoit M.

Yelp
Way too expansive! One of the worst couscous I ever had, tasteless. Ugly place. Take the +$10 for two, it's a better deal. The star goes for the music and staff!

Yelp
A bit expensive but the couscous was great and the owner threw in some freebies that were much appreciated

N L.

Yelp
They attempt to be refined but the vegetable couscous broth is a wreck. The briks are very good. The couscous grain is fine. It is very expensive. The service is very good.
