Where to Eat in Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve

"Yes, it’s another BYOB bistro, but Bagatelle does a solid job with French classics like onion soup, foie gras, blood sausage, and tartare — salmon, tuna, or filet mignon. Come Sunday, it’s also a bustling brunch destination, conveniently located steps away from Marché Maisonneuve." - Valerie Silva, Eater Staff

The Best Montreal BYOB Restaurants - Eater Montreal

"Hochelaga seems to have become a newer hub for French-focused BYOB restaurants in this city, and Bagatelle is one of the best bets — and also the most affordable (hello, $29 steak-frites)." - Holly Tousignant, Eater Staff

Really nice spot with a great vibe. The outdoor patio is super nice. I wish the food was better. The salad was limp with a few days old leaves. Tuna tartar was bland and chewy. The crème brûlée was cold under the half crust. Albeit it’s a nice vibe and decently priced.

Went for a brunch and ordered eggs benedict with maple-braised ham and asparagus (le jambon braisé à l'érable et asperges). The meal comes with nicely spicy fried potatoes (air fryer or oven baked?) and green salad with 5 blueberries. Tasteful and nice presented on the plate, however, there were only 2 half asparagus served and yolk could have been softer for a poached egg. We made or own mimosas (it's BYO) and at the end, we ordered a latte (next time I would rather go with filtered coffee). All in all, 4 out of 5.

Google
We had a beautiful experience. The food was delicious and the service was attentive too. It is a small restaurant so a reservation is a must. I liked the tasting menu with 5 services at about 85$/ person (minimum for 2 because there's a platter to share). It was worth the price and so delicious. Better come hungry. The only thing that was flawed was their mango cheesecake. It was overcooked therefore dry and not creamy and tasted strangely more like pear than mango. Otherwise I recommend this place!

Google
food was very meh, very small portions, would not recommend the chocolate cake (it’s very dry), the service was nice and the atmosphere was nice on the outside balcony

Google
The food was super tasty. Their hot chocolate was delicious, the latte was a bit strong for my taste but it was not bad. A bit pricey for 2 eggs and bacon but worth it. Thanks a lot guys - We will be back

Google
This little hole-in-the-wall bistro was magnificent. We did not know they needed a reservation ahead of time but they seated us at the bar. The service is was extraordinary and the food was magnificent. Everyone there was so polite and nice. I'm in town for a week and I plan on returning to this beautiful little hot spot. If you're ever lucky enough to be in Montreal this is one place that you should visit. If you miss it it will simply be your fault. Update: Went back for a second night in a row an they did not disappoint. The only one who will be disappointed is you if you do not get...and fast.

Google
This restaurant has the wining formula. Very good food, attentive service and nice atmosphere. We had dinner on the patio last Friday. Started with the lobster ravioli and then tataki duo and flank steak. Every was delicious and you get to bring your own wine. We will be back for sure.

Google
First time their I just loved it the food tasted as good as any wonderful restaurant in France. Staff is really friendly very professional you can bring your own beer and wine which is a plus fresh hot bread with butter was great the salad with peach was really wonderful. I had veal in a peppercorn sauce that I loved, french fries were crispy you can't go wrong here and the price was very very reasonable I will be going back and recommending this restaurant to other people

Yelp
4.5 stars. A lovely place with solid food and great vibe. Like others, I found this place after a long morning at the Biodome. The staff was super cordial and made us feel welcome, despite our inability to speak French. It was blistering hot that day, so we ate inside and started with salads, which were simple, fresh and delicious. My kids went with the grilled cheese, but my son went with the grilled cheese with duck , which he thoroughly enjoyed. Also, the fries/frites were on point. We ended with a simple chocolate cake that was somehow both moist yet crumbly. Super happy with my experience and would go again, I was in the area. Price point is a bit high, but a solid dining experience in all aspects.

Yelp
Went there for brunch. I don't really know if they're well known for their brunch menu, but... The food was OK. The eggs were a little too lemony, although the salmon underneath the eggs, were really good and a nice touch. The service was really good, everyone was super nice there. The ambiance is very much history. I mean, you're in the area of Hochelaga lol Would I go back not necessarily, not for brunch at least. But maybe for lunch or dinner? Who knows‍

Yelp
The food quality was not as expected. The burger meet had absolutely no flavour. The special was duck filled ravioli and the sauce was like a packaged gravy with mushy pasta. Not understanding the great review maybe because there isn't much food around

Yelp
loved it here. great place to sit outside and eat on a sunny sunday morning. awesome staff, tracey was my waitress. hope to be back someday.

Yelp
We stopped for lunch here on our way to the Biodome. So glad we did. The food and service was great. We are outdoors in the courtyard. Unfortunately we did not know it was a BYOB. Otherwise it would have been perfect.

Yelp
We found this amazing hidden gem on vacation as we drove out of Montreal headed to Quebec City. Everything was excellent! Special hits - the warm fig and goat cheese appetizer and the scallop and shrimp risotto. I wish I could give this place 6 stars.

Yelp
Wonderful lattes, crepes were extremely feeling, good portions, lovely atmosphere, and excellent service!

Yelp
We rolled up on our Bixi bikes (there's a Bixi station immediately next door) and were asked if we had a reservation. We did not, but the outdoor tables are not reserved, and we got a lovely table for two in front of the restaurant, which is exactly what we wanted! The service was excellent, and the food was superb. Can recommend.

Yelp
A nice little restaurant, yet quality is good. I don't read nor speak French, the server explained the menu to me patiently. I ordered a Steak Frite... Add C$5 it comes with an appetiser, a dessert and coffee. The steak is so well prepared, very juicy, it tops with some sour onion, making more layers of favour .. The appetiser is a spring roll type thing, I don't know how to say the name in French... There is duck confit inside, with a little sour and spicy sauce, taste is special E chocolate cake I got for dessert is SO good... I don't like thing too sweet but this cake is perfect on the spot.

Yelp
What a fabulous little bistro! The food is absolutely delicious--classic French cuisine with complex, subtle flavours in the sauces. The patio is very cosy and protected us from the rain. Dave was a superb waiter and we really enjoyed our meal here last week.

Yelp

Yelp
My sister, boyfriend and I went here for breakfast on a Sunday in the early afternoon. It's one of the very few if not the only restaurant around this area, so you can imagine how busy it was! We waited for 20 minutes to sit, but we were not disappointed with the breakfast. The prices are decent, the food was hot and semi-quick, and the servers were all pretty friendly. The lack of seating is kind of unimaginable for how busy it is.

Yelp
After walking around we saw a packed Bagatella and got a table immediately. They are not an English friendly restaurant. On several occasions we were ignored. If you want to have people that come after you receive food and finish before you get yours, you are in the right place. I have never wanted 1 hour 30 minutes for HALF decent food. My eggs Benedict was clearly overcooked and cold! It's great when your waiter never returns to your table and you have to ask both a host and another waiter for your food. It's funny how their 10 minutes turns to 25.

Yelp
Great service and excellent food. Tasting menu is delicious and very filling! It's a bit sad but understandable that they don't offer tasting options for 1 person. A special thank you Dave and Lara for your kindness and professionalism. My friend from Toronto (a big foodie) fell in love with Bagatelle and so I did, too:) oh yes and ambiance, everything was great. I look forward for coming back for dinner or brunch again, keep up the good work!

Yelp
Great spot to for brunch on a Sunny Sunday afternoon. The menu has a good variety of choices. The food was deliciously prepared and well worth the money. The decor has a charm providing an elegant, but conversational atmosphere. BYOB and the service was excellent. Food amazing and affordable. Will definitely be back when I'm back in town.

Yelp
What a nice surprise! I wasn't expecting much of this place since most of the reviews and pictures were for the brunch. Hubby took me here just because we have been so busy and needed a brake from everything lol! From the food to the service, all was very good. Our food was cooked to perfection and our plates were at the right temperature to keep the food on point. Our waiter was super sweet and professional. It gets loud quite fast as the place fills itself out. This is a solid BYOB at at reasonable price tag. For us, it came to about 135$ taxes and tips combined. I would definitely come back to enjoy another meal on their terrace during this summer.
google avatar

Yelp
*This review is for the brunch menu* I really like this place for a nice boozy weekend brunch . They have a nice terrasse in the summer. You can bring your own wine and buy orange juice to make mimosas. The baguette option instead of the usual square bread is great, especially if you get an Old Cheddar cheese extra to eat it with. Their crepes are also reaaally good. Try it out, you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Best place we ate hands down while in Montreal. Went here after the biodome. A very charming restaurant/cafe with lovely and friendly waitstaff. Prices were also excellent. We all had sandwiches which came with choice of 2 sides - carrot soup (husband chose this and it was delicious), a lovely green salad with a great balsamic vinaigrette, and/or fries. I chose salad and fries (fries were great, but wish I had gotten the soup after tasting my husband's). Children had roast beef with caramelized onions (must have added a splash of red wine to the onions --- so good, was thrilled my son didn't eat all so I could have his leftovers for dinner!). I had veggie sandwich and husband had chicken pesto. They also had entrees and for $5.5 CD it added an appetizer, coffee, and dessert. If only it weren't so far from our hotel I'd go back again before we headed back home.

Yelp
Possibly the best fries I've eaten in my life. Food came quick but tasted delicious. Waitress was patient and translated everything for us. It was busy when we got there, but understandably as the food was so good.
google avatar

Fouad B.

Yelp
I appreciated their service, however we were seated inside and it was too hot, not enough aeration. Also, food came late and it wasn't tasty, nor generous. I ordered eggs and sausage, nothing exceptional!

Sorcire P.

Yelp
Found this gem while walking from our apartment in Sherbrooke. There is outside seating and the drinks, (coffee and tea) come with the breakfast. I had the grilled cheese with bacon amd brie. Flavorful and filling! The rush comes about 1000, so I recommend getting there around 0900.

Yelp
Went here with a large group for our Christmas party. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. I started with a risotto with foie gras and it was one of the best I've had. Main course was a filet mignon. It was perfectly cooked and both tasty and tender. My dessert was a cheese cake and it was excellent. I plan to go back for the foie gras!

Yelp
This place is a breakfast & lunch establishment in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve area, situated next to the Marché. It's an alright place and the food is nice, and I was honestly debating between 3 or 4 stars, but it's expensive for what you get and their coffee is pretty "watery", so 3 seemed more fair. Also, the service is pretty average, a vague smile here & there but no coffee refills whatsoever, and with the lightness I could've used at least one more. Not amazing but not horrible either, A-OK sums it up well.

Yelp
I ate lunch on a weekday at Bagatelle with some collegues. All of us loved our food. It was really good. I had a goat cheese salad with honey. Perfect! On the lunch menu, we have an option were we can add an appeteizer and a desert for 4$. The selection is excellent! This place is a Bring Your Own Wine. I will be comming here for dinner for sure!

Yelp
Food was very good and fulfilling for it's price. I took sandwich with chicken pesto and basil during diner which came with fries and salad and it is worth it. Price was $15 which is not bad. If you take hors d'oeuvre ($5-$6) it comes with coffee, soup or salad and desert. My friend took that and she was too full to even eat the desert. Also, the coffee is refillable. Customer service is good. Their place is a little small although it was crowded when I went.

Yelp
I didn't want regular tourist food. I wanted a local spot for breakfast - and we got something local here. It's a really small place that serve some kicka** French food. My girl and I took a bike and rode east of Montreal for 30 min. before this place caught my eyes (there were a ton of SB looking place). I ordered Le Brunch - consisted of eggs (sunny side up - good way to soak up the baguette), crepe w/ Canadian maple syrup, sausage, bacon, ham, fruits, and (my favorite) home fries that packed plenty of flavor. The croissant was crispy and light - just the way it was suppose to be made. *waitress was awesome and helpful - my cup was filled up 3-4 times * if your French suck - it's cool, cause they will speak to you in anglais *laid back atmosphere *was that guy wearing an Expos cap? * cafe au lait is in a huge cup

Yelp
This place is a gem. The plate was plentiful. I ordered two eggs, bacon and sausage and it came with a toasted baguette, fruit (Orange, watermelon, pineapple, melon) and coffee. Our server was very nice and kept our coffee cups filled. It only cost $12. The coffee was a great roast. Service was speedy and with a smile. Highly recommend.

Yelp
INCREDIBLE place with AMAZING food. One of the best brunches I've had by far. Good portions and worth the price!! Get in here before 1 and you'll basically have no wait, even on a Sunday!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place after visiting the botanical gardens. Lovely outdoor seating, terrific brunch. Friendly service.

Yelp
Great breakfast place! Their salmon eggs Benedict and and breakfast classics are very good. Won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Found the restaurant via Yelp when looking for place to eat before visiting Biodome. No English menu for Brunch but waiter was helpful and explained the dishes for us. We got brunch one and also an egg and spinach dish, came with delicious bagget and fresh fruit, all very tasty. Enjoyed authentic French experience.
google avatar

Yelp
We came for a brunch on Sunday, and we stood at the door for 10 minutes without anybody even greeting us. Service is slow, I almost starved waiting for our food. After ordering, we waited for more than 30 minutes. No fresh juices. Place is noisy.
google avatar

Yelp

William B.

Yelp
Lovely food and environment. The service was too slow. Not family friendly: I came with my 20-month baby, they put us near the kitchen.

Dania H.

Yelp
I had supper here last weekend. Exceptional food, excellent service and bring your own wine. I can't say enough about the great food. It's true it's small a place, but good things come in small packages :) Highly recommended if you're looking for gourmet food at a reasonable price and you can bring your own wine to make this a great meal.

Yelp
Good brunch spot.Tasty and quality ingredients make this place a good spot for brunch. Affordable, too. Service gets pretty slow on weekends, though, but the good food is worth the wait. My experience with the waiting staff has been positive so far.

Yelp
while in Montreal we were looking for a restaurant to eat dinner and came across this charming place and had superb service and a delicious menu in this cute gem.

Yelp
No wait for my family of 5 Sunday at 9:30. Best croissant, bacon, eggs & cheese ever! Excellent food overall and great atmosphere.
