23 Places to Relive the Cold War

"There’s an amazing tunnel system snaking beneath the streets of Moscow, leading to a secret cold war fortress once code named “Bunker-42.” Designed and built after the first series of nuclear tests by the Soviet Union, these tests revealed that the optimum depth for the bunker’s silo must be no higher than 165 feet beneath ground in order to survive nuclear fallout intact. The task for the builders was enormous: construct a gigantic structure beneath the city streets without damaging Moscow’s existing infrastructure of streets and communication pathways. To do so would alert the public and innumerable unknown spies to the existence of the bunker, thereby rendering the entire (read: top-secret) thing useless.  Strategically located inside a hill in the Tagansky district due to its proximity to the Kremlin, allowing quick access to the bunker for Stalin and the premier tier of government officials within the USSR, Bunker-42 wasn’t completed until 1956 and was thankfully never put into use in its full capacity. Rather, it spent the subsequent three decades as an airstrike command base, communicating with aircraft transporting strategic bombers carrying nuclear weapons until the political climate began to shift in 1986. Today, the space exists as a historical monument that is equal parts museum to what life was like on the Soviet side of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War era and tour of the previously top-secret bunker itself, bringing visitors below ground to a time when the world lived on the constant brink of nuclear annihilation. A variety of tour packages are available at all hours of the day, catering to a range of ages, some of which focus more on the historical aspects of the space, while other take a nearly comic angle on the tangible threat of nuclear annihilation for all humankind." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This Cold War Bunker was absolutely amazing. If you like history, thats your place. This bunker system was to be used by Stalin and built in the early 1950s. There is a replica atomic bomb. The Bunker is 18 floors down and after finish tour back up 18 but is well worth the effort. After your tour, go to the restaurant. If you go the restaurant then they will let you take the elevator back up. Excellent visit, highly recommend.

Quite excited for this tour. However end up quite disappointed. They should know that mainly it is for tourist visit. They display some old items and play radio for us to have a feel of the old war days. But the atmosphere is not done proper plus everything is in russian which no one understands. Gotten us to walk into a tunnel and locked the door for us to experience darkness and emergency due to bombing. However, its in russian again. Everyone of us just stand there not knowing what is going on. When the lights on, everyone is like 'ok finally its over'. If can be translated into English, i believe that helps alot. Otherwise, the atmosphere need to be improved.

I accidentally found this while is was googling and was glad I did. They give you a tour with a knowledgeable guide. It’s a bunker... that’s so cool. I found it profoundly fascinating and would recommend. There are allot of stairs to the bottom but an elevator is available. They also have a restaurant but we didn’t go.

Lovely food, decor and even live music! Rounding off the Bunker 42 tour with a fun 'Politburo' style meal was the way to go. I enjoyed it a lot!

A really unique and highly recommended experience. The bunker built at the start of the cold war was an interesting place to visit, with a lot of in depth information provided in English by our guide. Our guide answered questions well and directed the tour without rushing through, great guy! The restaurant atmosphere was very cool and unique, food and drinks were a fair price for the situation and were tasty, also some high quality singing performed by a lady there during our meal. The bunker personnel treat this place seriously giving stern warnings in areas where photos were not allowed, they treat this place with respect and try to guide tourists to do the same. In short the visit was a unique and interesting experience that all different types of people will enjoy

We had a tasty lunch in the diningroom 60 meters below street level, whilst listening to the rumbling metro above us. A wonderfull experience. No English guides though, and you can only do the tour with a guide at your side.
