Restaurant Carl Nielsen

Without a doubt the best restaurant experience we had in Copenhagen in May 2022. Amazing food, lovely charismatic owners and a great location in Nyhavn. We were lucky to experience the marathon while we ate! Highly recommend the deer sandwich, and if we didn't live in Australia we would be back in a heartbeat.

I have been many great smørrebrød restaurants in town such as Aamanns and Kronborg. Carl Nielsen is the only one who leaves an impression on my taste buds w.r.t. complexity favor and creative presentation. Every dish is delicious and beautiful -- full of surprise. The service is impeccable, warm and well-paced for a cold Sunday afternoon. Both the server and the owner explained the story behind each smørrebrød creation. You can tell that the team genuinely puts lots of care and efforts in honoring Mr. Nielsen. If you're a snap lover, you have to try their house aquavit - created by a 2-star Michelin chef. The food was amazing. Service, however, was slow and poor. We ordered 6 Smørrebrød. 3 were served first followed by the next 3. The time between each serving was almost an hour.

Nice experience, tasty food, waiter introduced us nicely to the fascinating world of both smørrebrød and Carl Nielsen. Overall, we were very satisfied and would reccomend.

Excellent service with great description of the dishes and an interesting history — the composer Carl Nielsen used to live upstairs. Had the 3 herrings (each a distinct flavour) and deer, would have tried more but that was a good amount for lunch. From the outside it looked like the basement and upstairs were two different restaurants and the side door led upstairs. Don’t be fooled. They are the same restaurant and the entrance is through the basement.

Visiting Copenhagen for the first time, we wanted to walk to Nyhavn and get a quick lunch before heading to the airport. Checking reviews we picked solely based on number and proximity, and I so glad we did. The food here is magical. Seriously. I had no idea herring could be so delicious. Truly…I have eat in five star restaurants around the world and this meal is of the best I have ever eaten. The chef is a friendly and engaged woman who experienced the hardship of opening her restaurant right as covid hit. She has managed through creating delightful meals…do visit, you won’t regret (and you will get the reward of supporting a passionate local chef and her family). Order the three herrings. You will not regret.

Excellent smørrebrød and nice service. All dishes were delicious and beautifully presented. The herring plate was definitely the favorite. The interior is nice and cozy and it was easy to make a reservation online. Great place for lunch, and the surrounding neighborhood is pleasant to walk around as an added bonus.

Lovely place to try the Danish smørrebrød. It was an interesting taste, not my favorite meal, but still a very enjoyable experience. The carling tartar was great and so was the elderflower drink and the crème brûlée.
