De Knip

"An idyllic spot on the Vliet canal with a superb view of the glistening water. The original, well-balanced dishes are equally easy on the eye, as well as being delicious and full of flavour." - Michelin Inspector

We were invited to a friend’s 60th birthday to this restaurant, which is in a white-wash themed rural setting on the Vliet canal in Voorschoten, just between Leiden, Wassenaar and Leidschendam. This quite a chique restaurant, has a cosy waterfront terrace and private parking. When parking, make sure that you strategically put it in such a way, that it cannot be blocked by other cars… I understood that this is a family business, with the owner as the Chef, the wife and children as hosts. Very friendly, efficient and professional staff. We had a 5 course set dinner; the starters and dessert were fantastic, tasted good and with beautiful presentation. The main course was, however (to me) quite disappointing, the meat was quite bland and dry, to my Asian taste. If you are looking for a romantic restaurant in a beautiful waterfront setting, than this is the place to be.

Restaurant De knip is always on our itinerary when we visit Holland. The staff is warm and welcoming. The food is exceptional, both in presentation and flavor. Recommend that you try the prix fix menu with wine pairings.

We honestly did not make it easy for the staff, by having a party with one vegetarian, one with allergies and one who does not eat fish. The staff really went all the way to cater to this. Thanks again for the great service! Delicious food, I recommend.

VERY DISAPPOINTED! De Knip is one of our favorite restaurants. Unfortunately, yesterday’s experience was just really really poor. I was just so disappointed. The location is fabulous, and the food was (as always) just excellent but the service from our waiter was some of the worst that I have ever seen and absolutely not what I have enjoyed in the past from De Knip. Throughout our meal he was simply rude and unpleasant. Constantly interrupted, messed up our order, was dismissive of our questions. Everything just seemed like it was too much trouble and that he couldn’t be bothered. His entire attitude was unbelievably unprofessional. He needs some significant coaching or to be removed as he absolutely does not reflect De Knip’s standards and is hurting your reputation.

Had an excellent meal yesterday evening, very friendly and welcoming staff, nice and quiet environment with great views over the water. The food from the 5 course menu with wine pairings was very enjoyable, the Rouleau van Noorse zalmfilet was superb. Hopefully we will be back soon.

Positively surprised by this charming restaurant on the water front. The atmosphere was relaxing, comfortable but classy. Food presentation was immaculate and the service was attentive and efficient. Recommended!

The food was just bad. I’ve been to many Michelins, and this restaurant didn’t come near to even my local pub. One of the waiters was so rude to me it spoiled my night. When he wasn’t blabbering about himself, his music talents and how many languages he spoke or whatever, he was insulting me. Just a downright awful experience.

Yelp
Pretentious, old-fashioned French cuisine. Restaurant is filled with old rich people with dated expectations and cringeworthy dialect. Decent staff and okay wines, however our waiter was too comical/cynical for my taste and was too much 'present' for my taste. The decor was super old fashioned. I felt we got seated in a fancy privatized nursery home. No dish really stuck with us - it wasn't bad but I've had more subtle, pure and way more daring combinations at restaurants who don't pretend to be something super super special. In fact, I would say that most of the food we ate is something we could make at home by choosing a good recipe and having patience to cook it. On the good side my party couldn't handle undercooked meat and took the effort to substitute with 'sukade', a tender piece of meat that doesn't require to be served medium rare to be enjoyed. Regardless - Incredibly overpriced for what you get. Not recommended!
