The Best Montreal BYOB Restaurants - Eater Montreal

"This Mexican-Salvadorean restaurant, replete with plastic covers for tablecloths and reception hall-style seating, has to be one of the most affordable options on this list, and is just as delicious. Pupusas and tall glasses of horchata are an obvious choice, but burrito and chimichanga platters also offer huge bang for your buck." - Holly Tousignant, Eater Staff

We walked pass and decided to try this restaurant. Great portion of food. Its my first time trying Mexican-Salvadoran dishes. Tastes are good for every dish, i just feel like its not that flavorful for me. Theres only one uncle took the order, prepared the food, friendly service. The atmosphere is old fashioned, not fancy but overall is ok for a quick stop.

Imagine going back to your hometown after a while and going to your grandparents. That is El Amigo in a nutshell Reservation by phone. On location, not a cat. Only us and the only staff/front of house/cook/etc. Menu: extensive. Atmosphere: drama in Spanish on the TV. Decor: inside your parents house. Not wheelchair accessible. Bring your own wine/beer. Food made on order. Came pretty quick. Good portions. Tasty. Had the restaurant for ourselves until 20:00 came. Then 11 + 2 came at once. Staff overwhelmed but did his job. Good prices. TL;DR: come with good company, good wine or beer, and patience and enjoy the pupusas.

This is my new favourite Mexican restaurant. The owner was so kind and funny and he made great recommendations, the service was incredible. I came with a big group and we were all so happy with our meals. The portions were generous and the prices are SO low. I’m so glad we found this place.

The food here brings back the memories of when i was an exchange student in the states! My host family cooked me mexican food almost everyday. When i had my first bite of the black bean, it really remind me of my host family. They cooked me the beat mexcian food that i have ever had in my life. The chef is the server too. He is really lovely and helpful.

Great food great price, homey vibe. Staffed by one man who cooks and takes orders. Don’t be mislead by the buisiness Information I came when google said it was busier than usual but I was the only one there.

Google
What a gem of a place! Lacking in atmosphere but the food more than compensates. Staffed by a single elderly man who both took & prepared our order. His service was pretty satisfactory, but his cooking was great! Menu had a nice variety of dishes spread between Salvadoran & Mexican cuisine. The prices blew me away with how good they were, I ended up ordering 2 pupusas as well as an entire platter. If it wasn't so out of the way for me, I'd come here on the regular & ensure he stays in business.

I came here at 1pm and was the only customer. The bread was prepared fresh but it is hard to believe that the dish itself was prepared this week! I chose to come because of the good reviews; however, the moment I entered I got doubtful. The environment does not seem clean. Maybe if the store gets cleaner and redecorated more people come and consequently the food would be served fresher.

Google
The chimichangas and right over there the steak ranchero:) AMAZING! If you’re looking for an authentic meal this BYOB is the one place I can easily say is like having a meal at their family table. And the black bean sauce!?!? The best I’ve ever had! The chef gave us a container to take home! Hugged the chef before leaving too:) I’ll be here again!

Yelp
We were looking for Mexican for lunch. Found them on Yelp. We were very disappointed. AC didn't work. It was very warm. They had no cold water to drink. No ice. Only bottled water was cold. The owner served us. He didn't seem too friendly. The one redeeming quality was the food. I had the mixed plate which was ok. My friend liked his tacos.

Yelp
Craved some authentic Mexican food and was not disappointed! There was only one man working and he graciously welcomed me and my friends. He cooked our food promptly and everything was delicious. It was my first time trying chimichangas and now I can tell everyone I'm a big fan of chimichangas. It's basically an extreme burrito. Deep fried tortilla with a protein of your choice, mixed with the perfect blend of spices, peppers and cheese... so good. Looking forward to trying the paella and flautas next time. Don't be fooled by the low key setup, the food and service are definitely worth the visit!

Yelp
The food was tasty. We got a variety of food for take-away, for a picnic. The sause and coleslaw was tasty. The Yuka chips were also a great balance with the salad. The salad was very basic. But the puposas where really good. The value was really good as well. I'm definitely going again in order to get food for a picnic or take-away.

Yelp
OMG, I love this place. I've been here over a dozen times and have never had a bad meal. The pupusas are the absolute best (range from $2.10 - $2.50 each). Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and they come piping hot. You can hear them slapping the dough in the kitchen when you order them - so you know they are made fresh to order. My favourite are the chicken and cheese ones. I have to admit that I usually just gorge on pupusas but I have ordered other things here as well: Chicken Tamales - $2.30: Good, but nothing remarkable (I'd rather have the pupusas). Campo Combination Plate (chicken taco, chicken enchilada, rice, beans and salad) - $12.50: Very tasty with lots of chicken. The salad is iceberg/romaine though, not real mixed greens. Calamari - $7.75: Tender calamari rings fried to perfection. Not rubbery or chewy at all. One of the best places for calamari. Seafood Paella - $18.25: Lots of seafood: calamari rings, shrimp, fish and mussels. Calamari rings were so tender, shrimp were large and tasty, fish tasted fresh and didn't smell fishy, mussels were a good size and delicious. The only slightly negative thing was that the rice was a little on the dry side, but it still tasted really good. This place is on a little side street in Little Italy and looks like nothing much from the outside. It's a mom and pop joint with tasty authentic food. Most of the customers are Spanish-speaking and many people come for takeout. Prices are good and portions are generous. Service is polite and competent. If you love pupusas and are in Montreal you have to check this place out!

Yelp
Had high expectations for this authentic Mexican/Salvadorian spot and was left disappointed. Service was slow, smell of cigarette from clients smoking outside (ventilation of the place needs an update). The food was mediocre at best, the sopa de tortilla was ok, pupusas not so much, the only thing I enjoyed was the tuja. Overall there are better places around

Yelp
Stopped for a quick lunch. Not too quick, but my combo platter with a chicken enchilada and a chicken taco was great!

Yelp
The service was very good by both the waiters and owner himself. The food was very delicious.. Very fresh and hot. Will come back again

Yelp
One of the best burrito plates I have ever eaten! The portions are enormous, the vegetables fresh and filling. The prices are reasonable for the portion size. I had to take my second burrito home for dinner.

Yelp
So let's get food quality out of the way ...it's pretty good. The place though is just gross. The utensils look old. I never ever noticed it elsewhere, but here it was really apparent. Then it gets worse. My friend asked for a Diet Pepsi and the waiter/cook returned with a can that white stick and fizzy gunk all around the rims. We checked underneath to see the expiration date and it was over 2 years past the date (October 17, 2016). He asked for a different can, but what he received was the same can but with the gunk wiped off. We know because we took a look again. I don't plan on ever coming back unless they get a serious makeover and an actual cleaning routine. It's a shame because the food is actually pretty good when taking price into consideration. Oh and avoid the washrooms too.

Yelp
Really good Mexican/Salvadorian food. Simple decor, with funny Spanish TV playing. HUGE portions, cheap prices, friendly staff. Pupusas are off the HOOK! I can also attest to the enchiladas, and burritos. Also, no fee for BYO wine. :) Docked it one star for a less-than-great vegetarian selection, and they use some kind of Chinese veggie mix (I had water chestnuts and baby corn in my enchilada -- not exactly traditional, though still tasty).

Yelp
The food here is authentic South American fare and everything we've had here was very good. The decor is frightful but don't go for the ambience, the food is the prize here. Easily the best south American food in Montréal, but only 4 stars because the carne asada has been tough.

Yelp
Fantastic little Salvadorean/Mexican joint in Little Italy. A hole-in-the-wall family establishment that is usually filled with large Latino groups and Mexican soap operas blaring from a large screen television. Portions are ridiculously large and cheap (the centro americano costs around $14 and is a steak that comes with rice, black beans, plantains, tortilla, etc, etc). It's bring your own wine and.or beer as well so you can't lose. The pupusas - El Salvadorean specialty, a savoury filled pancake - are also delicious.

Yelp
Pupusas! This place is great for groups, as there is usually lots of space! The pupusas are delicious and cheap cheap cheap. I believe the prices have gone up no more than 25 cents in the last ten years! This is the place to go to eat well for under $10. Get at least one pupusa with loroco spice. The enchiladas are good to start with. Hot sauce is hot so watch it. BYOB, boo yah.

Jay K.

Yelp
There are only a couple things here that seem to be worth trying. The yucca con chicharon although the pork is slightly on the dry side but I havent had this dish anywhere where the pork wasnt. The pupasas are very good too and so is the plantain. Those are the only 3 dishes that I ever get here and they do them better than the other Salvadorian restaurants Ive been to in the city. The other dishes dont seem as interesting and arent that cheap either. Dont be scared by the terrible decor and by the fact that its always empty. If you enjoy those classic Salvadorian dishes its worth a try.

Mattie T.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my experience at this restaurant ! The food is very fresh and comes in generous portions, the staff is friendly and really wants to make you satisfied. It was my first time trying Salvadorian food and certainly not the last time!!! Try it!!! :)

Yelp
I love this place. The bean pupusas are $2.10 and come with unlimited curtido and tomato sauce. Two are more than enough for me for dinner. The guacamole & chips are a bit pricier ($6) but are delicious and a good size to split between two people. While other pupserias in the area might have nicer decor, this place stands out for being the cheapest I've seen (without sacrificing quality) and for being BYOB. It's the best!

Yelp
I come from south America and have never tried food with that much condiment ever, probably I picked the wrong dish, but sauteed meat seemed a sound choice, wrong, it came with a disgusting sauce and the black beans were extremely salty. I had to leave my plate not even half way, though the corn cakes were acceptable. The flavor in the rest of the ingredients was nasty artificial.
