"El Salvadorean food is another cuisine that’ll fill up your hungry group on moving day. Pupusas — cornmeal flatbread stuffed with beans or chicharron and/or cheese — at El Chalateco are both delicious and affordable at $3/each (two or three should do the trick). Do yourself a favour and also order a plate of fried plantains with crema. Delivery with any of the three main apps." - Joel Balsam

"La Petite-Patrie is a hub for Montreal’s Latinx community and hosts many affordable, delicious Salvadoran restaurants. El Chalateco is one of the strongest, with pupusas stuffed with meat, cheese, and beans, fried yuca, and several other Central American specialties. Its no-frills dining room with Mayan murals has reopened, but takeaway and delivery (via Uber Eats and DoorDash) remain an option." - Eater Staff

I got some takeout and loved it! The decor in the restaurant was plain but the atmosphere was very lively. The service was very kind and quick. The pupusa itself was delicious, not too greasy and filled well. I asked for extra curtido and salsa and they gave me more than enough.

I’ve been wanting to try Salvadoran food for a while now and I can confidently say I’ve found what will be my spot from now on. The portions were very generous and all the food was delicious. I got the Pupusa with Chicharrón, maracuyá juice and the Tepeyac plate with chicken. It was very savoury and they bring you some sauces and coleslaw you can add, although I found those extra sauces to be a bit bland. The staff is also very friendly and the service was quick. All in all recommend and will be coming back.

Sooo delicious! I couldn't stop doing little happy dances in my seat throughout the meal!

A new food experience. The pancakes are soft and juicy, in which the filling is flavorful. The yuca cake tastes special and I can’t express its flavor actually, but I have to say I never taste such flavor before. It is a good meal that I only spent little but have tasted many kinds of flavor. One of the disadvantages is that the portion is not very large. However, 20 dollars are enough for a satisfying lunch.

Excellent place to try Salvadoran food in Montreal, there are choices for different dishes and pupusas have to be tried, decent prices, you have to verify the hours of operation, Sundays they open at 11 AM.

First time trying El Salvadorian food I love this cuisine! We had the pupusas, tamales and enchiladas. The enchiladas are very different from Mexican ones, but super tasty nonetheless. We had the horchata and tamarindo for drinks and they were refreshing! Love the value for money at this place and can’t wait to go back to try their tasting menu.

Excellent! We were really craving pupusas, as we hadn't been able to find a Salvadoran restaurant since we moved. I ordered the beef soup and pupusas rellenas, and everything was very tasty. The atmosphere is simple and relaxed, and the service was quick and efficient. We'll be back here as soon as we return to Montreal.
