Goxoki

"Goxoki means warm and cosy in Basque, which is perfectly suited to this restaurant in historic Bayonne, run by the Hourcastagnou family. An elegant, classical setting for food that shines the limelight on local seasonal produce and an attractive game menu. Connoisseurs will be delighted to know that the gravy boats remain on the table – as quintessentially French as La Marseillaise." - Michelin Inspector

Influenced by the reviews I read, I dined at the restaurant. On the positive side, it's centrally located, with a pleasant environment, most dishes were tasty and had large portions, and they had an extensive wine list. The menu is structured in a way that you can't help but order a three or four-course menu, otherwise, you pay for one dish almost as much as a menu. Both menus have starting prices and additional charges if you choose a particular dish. I find it excessive to charge €49 for a three-course menu and an additional €30 for one fillet dish. The restaurant is promoted by the owners as a tasting destination. There was no creativity in the dishes, many of which had the same ingredients, such as asparagus and foie gras. We paid €250 for two people, a tasting menu of €49, one of €89, additional charges for dishes we chose on the menu, and a wine for €45 (the cheapest on the list, €40). The menu was only in French (!), and the waiters didn't know enough English to help you. The service was good, but that's about it. I consider their dishes tasty without creativity and the menu overpriced. In San Sebastian, we had a much better meal for €150. I don't recommend it; I consider it overpriced.

We had a lovely evening at Goxoki, for the second time actually. The menus are well composed with flavors that go together really well, all dishes have a pretty presentation and we enjoyed the professional and unobtrusive service. No rush and a relaxing ambiance, even though we think the interior could have a redesign and make the restaurant even more successful. For two guests having a menu, some drinks and coffee the check was 160 euro. Great value for a great evening!

In a world where travel plans often go awry and schedules rarely align perfectly, discovering a place that meets you with understanding and exceeds expectations is a rare and precious gift. Our recent experience at Restaurant GOXOKI in Bayonne was precisely that – a gift wrapped in incredible hospitality and tied with the ribbon of exquisite French cuisine. What began as a potentially stressful evening due to a missed train and a subsequent reservation shuffle transformed into one of the most memorable dining experiences we've ever had, thanks entirely to the extraordinary grace and flexibility of the GOXOKI team. Having missed our original train to Bayonne, we found ourselves in a predicament, our eagerly anticipated dinner reservation hanging in the balance. A quick email to GOXOKI was met not with frustration, but with genuine understanding and a willingness to accommodate our now-hectic timeline. Their solution? To open their doors an hour before their stated opening time, allowing us to embark on the ambitious yet utterly enticing "Discovery Menu" and still make our later train departure. This act of pure hospitality, going above and beyond to ensure we didn't miss out on their culinary offerings, set the stage for an evening that transcended mere dining. From the very first plate to the last, each course of the Discovery Menu was a testament to the kitchen's skill and creativity. The journey began with a delicate and refreshing pairing of white asparagus and lobster, a perfect overture that was both visually appealing and a delightful awakening for the palate. As the courses unfolded, each dish presented a thoughtful combination of flavors and textures, showcasing the quality of the ingredients and the chef's artistry. A particular standout, and a dish that still lingers in my memory, was the foie gras. Often a rich and decadent offering, GOXOKI's rendition was a masterclass in balance. Delectably cooked to perfection, it possessed a melt-in-your-mouth quality that was both luxurious and surprisingly light, avoiding the often overwhelming richness that can accompany this dish. It was a true highlight, demonstrating a nuanced understanding of flavor profiles. The culinary voyage concluded on a high note with a strawberry dessert that was the epitome of lighthearted sweetness. It was a refreshing and elegant end to a substantial meal, leaving us with a feeling of pleasant satisfaction rather than heavy overindulgence. Beyond the exceptional food and the unparalleled service, the ambiance at GOXOKI added another layer to its charm. The carefully curated playlist of late 90's to mid 2000's music created a casual and comfortable backdrop, a subtle reminder that while the food is serious in its quality, the atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed. It's a detail that speaks to the personality of the restaurant and reinforces the feeling of being welcomed into a family's passion project. Speaking of family, it is evident that GOXOKI is a labor of love for those who run it. This small, family-run establishment imbues every aspect of the dining experience with warmth and genuine care. From the initial accommodating phone call to the impeccable service throughout the meal, you feel like a valued guest, not just a customer. In a world increasingly driven by efficiency and rigid schedules, GOXOKI stands out as a beacon of flexibility, hospitality, and culinary excellence. Our experience was not just about enjoying a magnificent meal; it was about encountering a level of service that is increasingly rare, a willingness to go the extra mile that transforms a simple dinner into an unforgettable event. If you find yourself in the charming town of Bayonne, making a reservation at Restaurant GOXOKI is not just recommended, it is essential. Prepare to be delighted, accommodated, and utterly charmed by this hidden gem.

I am a tourist from Japan and just arrived here yesterday. I love tasting seafood and vegetables. I wanted to try it here, but after reading this news, I really don’t want to be the target of bandits. Just two asparagus and a few flowers cost €62. What a surprise! I sympathize with this victim and call on other tourists to be vigilant to avoid being scammed.

Very good restaurant in Bayonne center. The main dishes are excellent, the starters/desserts are below par compared to similar restaurants in the region.

A superb dining experience - all of the dishes crafted with great skill and well presented. The staff was most welcoming and guided us to some wonderful wines to accompany the "menu gourmand". The dining room was elegant, chic, but relaxed at the same time. It's remarkable that the chef, pastry chef, sommelier, and wait staff / maitre de worked together so well - we could we why they are rightfully proud of the quality experience the family provides to the guests.

Yelp
Absolitly amazing gastronomic experience. This place is worth any Michelin experience in a very elegant yet informal setting. Impecable service, and wonderful wine selection suggested by experience sommelier.
