Hjem

"'Hjem' means 'home' in both Scandinavian and Northumbrian dialects, uniting the birthplaces of owners Alex and Ally. The restaurant is located inside The Hadrian Hotel, with all guests arriving for an aperitif in a part of the building that feels more like the village local, before moving to the contrastingly pared-back dining room. In a nod to Chef Alex's Swedish heritage, the meal finishes with his version of 'fika' – as the table becomes covered in an assortment of sweet treats and snacks, it makes for a generous and fittingly memorable end to a superlative experience." - Michelin Inspector

A beautiful one in a lifetime dining experience. Everything was perfect! The waiter was extremely friendly and informative - we learnt so much from him. Had the taster menu paired with the non-alcohol drinks, which was magical. Very impressed with the non-alcoholic amaretto! The food was delightful - couldn't fault it at all. Hjem is also very accommodating to food preferences. It truly was a magical once in a lifetime experience - fine dining at its best.

Restaurant Hjem has always been a culinary Michelin star experience - this was our 3rd time visiting with friends and we’re def not regular fine dining people. If there’s one place we’d recommend a dining experience, it’ll be here. The whole meal is a journey, and for internationals like us, we thought when it came to good food, flavor and spice we knew it well - but this was an entire experience on its own. It’s a visual and tasting experience, as the dish is explained to you + the food enters your mouth, our perception on food changed and we were just glad to be there. Watching the team work really adds to the experience and is something we’ve only seen on tv. The customer service is top level. It’s a 15 course menu and yes, it’s enough to fill you up (even if you don’t fill yourself up with the generous alcohol pairing option). There’s free parking on site and they have lodging too. Highly recommended 💯

First visit to the restaurant and exceeded my expectations, superb food - in particular the sardine dish, the lobster and the horseradish ice cream. Very interesting wine pairings - equally inspired soft drink pairings, very informative but relaxed service. Highly recommend.

A bit of miscommunication on our part meant we arrived at Hjem on a day they were closed. Instead of turning us away, which would have been acceptable, Chef Marek and co-owner Ally - who happened to be there prepping for the next day’s service - very kindly took us in. They gave us a beautiful room for the night, opened a lovely bottle of wine, and even made us a full breakfast the next morning. It was generous, unexpected, and completely set us up for a day walking Hadrian’s Wall. The next evening, we returned for the 12-course tasting menu - and it was exceptional. Every dish was thoughtful, delicious and often beautifully curious. Hjem is Northumberland’s first Michelin-starred restaurant, but honestly, one star feels like an understatement. The experience, from the cooking to the service, was faultless. The whole team is warm, professional, and clearly passionate about what they do. There’s an attention to detail here that’s rare; everything just feels considered. One note: they’ll be closing the doors at their current location on December 31st. So if you’ve been meaning to visit, now’s the time. And if you miss it, keep an eye out for where this brilliant team turns up next. Wherever they go, they’ll be worth following

We went for a significant birthday and this was a really great place to go for a big celebration. It was a sixteen course tasting menu consisting largely of a series of really attractive and delicious snacks, several no more than a few mouthfuls. The wine pairings were excellent and worked really well with the food. We felt really looked after as they fed us course after course after course. The atmosphere was really relaxed, highly polished but not ostentatious. The staff were really friendly and were very knowledgeable of each course, how it was made, and could answer questions we had on how they were made so delicious! Having stayed the night, breakfast the following morning was amazing, a real smorgasbord. We would go back in a heartbeat!

Outstanding experience for a birthday treat. 15 course menu which was magnificent. The food is beautiful, fine dining quality, but it didn’t feel stuffy in the service/atmosphere. We stayed the night, room was fine (hotel going through gradual refurbishment), then breakfast was another treat with beautifully laid out food in the morning.
